"perfect blue" (1998)
on rewatch, this was both better and worse than i remembered.
- no one does a transition/jump cut/juxtaposition, at least not in anime, like satoshi kon esp. in the opening minutes of this film, which transposes scenes from cham!'s last concert as a trio with mima's ordinary life post-idol. the juxtapositions are unexpected and not obvious, the beginning of the movie's long disorientation. and of course the unforgettable dream/delusion hybrids as mima begins to experience her life as an unending series of second and third takes. that the movie makes no attempt to validate your theories as to which scenes are dream, montage, and/or reality (at least, reality for the world of the characters) is what makes this film obviously pre-mcu. these days i'm sure there are 4 hour long youtube essays trying to tell you the "true" "perfect blue" timeline -- if they exist, don't watch them.
- a musing on the nature of animation/anime films: animation has improved (obviously) since 1997, but even with rotoscoping, digital technology, and animators who have spent all of their adolescent and adult life producing painstakingly detailed and well-articulated 30-second shorts on twitter tagged with "indie anime", it's still difficult (if not impossible) for animated faces to duplicate the microexpressions of a human face on screen. (if it were possible, chainsaw man (2022) would have done it.) you can fake it for a few seconds, with widening of eyes or a twitch of the mouth, and there are moments in "perfect blue" where we linger on a character's expression. but for the most part, the work of microexpressions is done through some small physical detail: the overpowering overhead lights of a set, rumi's cigarette ash falling, the lines on a tv screen as a tape is rewound, the particular way morning light might fall on your bed at certain times of the day.
i think a lot about how anime fakes us out and makes us want to say the word "cinematography" when there is no such thing. there is no camera in an anime film. no shot can ever be an accident; it is always fully formed by human hands (even more true of a film made in the 90s). in the first ten minutes of the film, you see mima walk to the outside corridors of her apartment building, open her door, clean out her refrigerator, run a bath, then flop on her bed. the "camera" wanders in 3-second still shots around her room, establishing shot after establishing shot. there is so much stuff, and it is all hand-drawn: perfume bottles, stuffed animals, lotions, stacks of cds, dried flower bouquets, rows of spices on the range, the rust stains from the stopper chain of her sink. i'm not saying a film director wouldn't have done the same, but these shots feel exceptionally "anime," of trying to work around the limitations of the animated cel. when you cannot ever capture motion by accident, when every gesture "on camera" requires what to a non-artist would be a herculean act of labor, when two characters cannot surprise you into having chemistry with their body language or energy, then everything becomes a matter of framing.
the benefit of animation, though, is that you can easily traverse between illusion and reality. because the camera is not real, because you already are suspending your disbelief, no extra work is required for you to see illusion!mima as a real person. these days i complain frequently about live action adaptations of manga/anime that don't add to the story with its medium. though i've never read the novel on which it is based, "perfect blue" feels like one of those perfect moments when anime is in fact the best medium for adaptation. in anime, everything that is real is already unreal; so, too, is "perfect blue."
- in the early 2000s, if you liked "perfect blue," people would probably recommend "serial experiments lain" (which is actually what i watched pretty much right after "perfect blue," and i was too young for them both), "ergo proxy," or even the other satoshi kon films. but in 2024 i would say, you should watch "odd taxi." it has everything: the mindfuckery, the b-list pop idols, the murder, the musings on life and the cruelties of internet life, the fantastic soundtrack. "odd taxi" is coen brothers to "perfect blue"'s david lynch. did lynch watch "perfect blue" before making "mulholland drive"? the question now haunts me.

We finally have our teaser for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM!
I think it looks pretty cool. The backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous, and it's nice to see a big 2D animated film getting a wide release. J.R.R. Tolkein's Middle-Earth is actually no stranger to animation, as it has seen animated adaptations going back to the 1970s... You also had the still-pictures short put together by animation legend Gene Deitch in the 1960s that was never meant for release to the public, more to establish a trademark. Described as an "ashcan copy", this was when producer William Snyder's Czechoslavakia-based Rembrandt Films - where Deitch worked, and made all of his TOM & JERRY cartoons circa 1961-62 - briefly had the rights to turn the books into a feature, but it didn't materialize.
Rankin-Bass - in working with Japanese-based animation studio Topcraft - finished the first screen adaptation in 1977 with an animated TV movie called THE HOBBIT, and a year later, Ralph Bakshi rolled out his rotoscoped adaptation titled THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bakshi's RINGS didn't lead to a sequel despite being a part one and also being a box office success, while Rankin-Bass HOBBIT got a follow-up in the form of THE RETURN OF THE KING in 1980.
But Peter Jackson really set a standard with his ambitious, visually resplendent adaptations. Not just for LORD OF THE RINGS adaptations, but also big-budget fantasy movies in general. Even his HOBBIT trilogy was thought to have fallen way short of that classic trilogy...
So where do you go from there? How does an animated version made nowadays do its own thing and sit nicely alongside the Jackson trilogy?
Warner Bros.' marketing seems to think that beginning the trailer with moments from the Jackson films is the way to go... And then wham-banging from those big budget productions into... An anime film that's noticeably a lot lower budget. I think that's not gonna go over great for a lot of audiences, who will be thinking after those first 30 or so seconds... "Wait, why is this a cartoon?"
And what's your explanation? "It was to keep the rights"?
I think it looks cool, then again I'm an animation fan. I gladly ate this up when they announced it a few years ago. I remember INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE getting that sort-of "wait, they're doing a cartoon now?" reaction before it came out. We already had the three big-screen live-action iterations of the character (Sam Raimi trilogy with Tobey Maguire, the 2nd Sony series with Andrew Garfield, and the MCU movies with Tom Holland), and we had VENOM just a few months earlier which was possibly setting up another distinct universe... So this was yet another Spider-Man movie, another universe, and it was animated...
SPIDER-VERSE opened okay in December 2018. $35m wasn't bad, per se, but not exactly great. That was lower than what, say, fellow Sony Animation movie HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA opened up with six years earlier. It wasn't anywhere near a more recent Pixar original like COCO ($50m)... But then something happened. Those who saw the movie raved about it. I know I sure I did, I caught it opening day. And the movie went to make over 5x its opening weekend gross and more than covered its $90m budget. $380m+ worldwide was pretty successful, though it was far below what the live-actions all took in. Even the more mixed Garfield movies, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 made over $700m worldwide back in 2014...
Cut to ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, which took in over $380m DOMESTICALLY last year, and $690m worldwide. INTO got by on being great and audiences discovering it... Maybe a similar leggy performance awaits WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM, if it's pretty good. It does face some screen battling with MUFASA and SONIC 3, along with... Coincidentally, Spider-Man villain movie KRAVEN THE HUNTER.
I'm very curious to see how it does, honestly. Do I think the future of wide-release 2D movies rests on its back? Absolutely not. An anime adaptation of a well-worn property that's really just a rights-grab is not some great decider, and shouldn't be seen as one IMO. If it does well, I think it'll just be viewed as a sort of one-time thing. Not absolute proof to executives that full-on 2D animation units MUST be invested in. If the occasional 2D SPONGEBOB movie or whatever can't, this certainly won't. It would have to take multiple 2D movies making FROZEN numbers back-to-back... Yeeeeah... I think a lot of 2D purists don't realize that are so many editorial, financial, and technical factors at play that keeps the wider American feature animation industry dead-set on just using CGI. Not cheaper, but easier in some regards, and it's also their way of not dealing with certain aspects of 2D production that they didn't have much control over.
Anyways, I hope this movie does well, and it's neat to see animation filmmakers playing in this particular sandbox. Showing that anyone can take a crack at the property once again. After all, director Kenji Kamiyama - in addition to having a history dating back to the '80s - did direct a STAR WARS: VISIONS short and BLADE RUNNER: BLACK LOTUS.
In general, I like this sort-of current wave of big screen animated feature adaptations of properties largely synonymous with live-action movies. Spider-Man, Ninja Turtles, Transformers, ya know. Movies that are more than just "Oh, and the cartoon." SPIDER-VERSE and MUTANT MAYHEM did such cool things with the medium and the properties they were adapting, and TRANSFORMERS ONE looks to do the same.
(Yes, I know, there was a CG TMNT movie in 2007. It made its money back, I know. It kinda just came and went, though, in the public conscious. Whereas MUTANT MAYHEM was acclaimed and it has a sequel coming. And I'm also aware of the 1986 TRANSFORMERS movie. It's why I said "largely synonymous with"...)
I wonder if more happen. I'd imagine it'd be for another franchise, though, not an animated take on a standalone live-action classic. Like, don't expect a really sick animated FRENCH CONNECTION film or something like that. Surprised Disney doesn't get the jump on an animated STAR WARS movie that's NOT a pilot for a TV series (yes, I also know the 2008 CLONE WARS movie exists). Warner Bros. was silly to not make that animated BATMAN BEYOND movie pitched a little while back. Maybe a horror mainstay could be next? Wasn't there an animated NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in the works at one point? More animated horror would be neat, honestly.

Hi, I just saw you posting about Sandman, and I have noone to talk to about it, so I might as well ask you: what do you think about the choice to make the Endless.... how can I say this... skin-coloured? I remember liking a lot how even though the comic was in colour, the Endless were always purely black and white, I thought it was a very cool way to make them subtly inhuman. What do you think? do you think it could have been done in a TV series? Do you think it would have been a good choice? Do you have theories about why they didn't?
Disclaimer: I haven't read the entire series. I wanted to, because the story and the characters and the universe are really good, but I have a weak stomach and the Corinthian was too much for me. So if it's a change that was made in the comics later, I'm sorry for the wrong opinion.
(Also disclaimer because the world is horrible and I don't want to be suspected of having secondary reasons: I have nothing against Death being Black, Black goths have proven that an all white-and-black aesthetic is not a priviledge of white folks. I just wished they were less flesh coloured.)
Ok, so I am also in the edge zone of "squeamish Sandman fan" so I feel you 100% on that lmao.
I've briefly had discussions with friends more well-read of the comics with regard to the Endless' appearances and the casting, etc., and from a lore standpoint I think it's important to note that the monochrome appearance we see of Death and Dream and the others is basically a visual placeholder -- canonically they look different to everyone who sees them, but this isn't feasible story-wise because it would be confusing for them to change appearance in practically every panel.
Now the VFX degree I haven't been using comes out to discuss the series. Obviously, I don't have insight into the creative processes and decisions being made to adapt the comics for TV, but here's my opinion as someone who understands how this kind of thing works.
Basically, having the Endless be 'human coloured' is going to come down to a time and money issue. No matter what route you take, whether its make-up or visual effects, it's going to be very expensive to paint your main actors black and white in every shot. Doing it practically will require teams of make-up artists and making an actor sit in a chair for hours a day when they could be filming, and that's probably the less expensive option.
Doing it digitally would require rotoscoping every shot featuring the Endless, a process that involves a VFX artist going frame by frame to mask areas they want to change. Done to a professional standard, rotoscoping can take hours just to get to a point where you can start thinking about colour grading. This would increase the series' VFX budget by many times, and that's without taking into account the other effects work that will be going into adapting Sandman.
If you saw the She-Hulk previews, this is why Jen (She-Hulk herself) doesn't really look all that great. Even on an MCU production budget, it's really hard to digitally change an actor's skintone and have them look good, especially when you're working on the incredibly tight deadlines of a TV show (and the budget is a lot lower than if they were making a film to start with). For Sandman, I'm sure the budget is already tighter than would be for an MCU show. Netflix have a lot of money to spend on their productions, but they're not Disney and they're going to have been really cautious with handing out money for this series. Any comics adaptation is expensive, and with Sandman being comparatively less well-known and aimed at adults, they're taking a huge gamble on trying to attract people to this series.
That's my long answer, but to summarise:
The monochrome appearance of the Endless in the comics is a visual stand-in for the fact that canonically everyone who meets them sees them differently.
To do this in the series would be really expensive and time consuming, especially if it was done digitally.
If they had gone with digitally altering the actors' appearances on a TV show's budget and deadlines, they'd probably have turned out looking something like She-Hulk.
Also, if time and money weren't a concern, they had made the Endless monochrome and they looked realistic, can you imagine the response from people on Twitter?
I think it's better overall if they're human coloured honestly.
#i hope i explained this well#rotoscoping and colour grading were my least favourite part of learning visual effects and i couldn't wrap my head around it very well#sandman#sandman netflix#talking/responding

So. Does the MCU, and Disney as a whole, severely overwork their CGI artists to the point of mass exhaustion in a situation that is absolutely unsustainable? Yes. No question about it.
Does that make the final CGI result bad though? People are always shit talking Marvel movies about how bad the CGI is, and in some cases that's true. In a lot of other cases, I gotta disagree. There is a lot of time and heart put into the movies still.
There's two parts to this. Firstly, there's necessity. Iron Man cannot exist in real life. No human person could ever wear the Iron Man suit. They would get crushed by every single joint piece. Hulk cannot exist in real life. The MCU wanted the extreme proportions of the Hulk, which is an unattainable body to get. The issue with Lou Ferrigno is that when he was the Hulk, he was just a body builder in makeup. The MCU wanted something that could easily be considered a monster, which necessitated CGI. Then, you get onto the slippery slope. You have a scene of Hulk going through Manhattan streets, but the destruction caused needed all the filmed scenes to be redone with CGI. So, don't bother filming those scenes, just CGI them to save time and resources. Eventually, you find out that rotoscoping in the actors onto entirely digital sets looks better than putting CGI characters onto practical sets. So, most of the movie is now going to be CGI. (This is not a defense, I just want to point that out. There are ways to get a good blend, they're just expensive with both time and money)
The second part is the element of the artists themselves. Whenever I go into a project, I don't want the end result to be low effort, unless maybe it's something just to kill time. Even then, I usually go back later. Making something that isn't up to par with my skills is an itch that I can't deal with. So, even if I'm stressed and tired, if I set out to make something, I will make it to the best of my abilities. I know my skills, I know what I can get done in a certain time frame. And I imagine that these CGI artists are at least similar. That's what drives them to those levels of exhaustion. It's a passion for the project. If I had that level of stress on a project I didn't care about, I would just leave. I imagine that happened still. But that means that the people left behind are the ones dedicated to the craft, and who have set out to do their best work on a project they care about.
In summary, if you're criticizing the digital effects of movies, then please take a second to consider how good the effect itself is. Sometimes, the effect is in fact bad. Sometimes the artists can't get a great project done to top quality in the time allotted. But to just dismissively say that the MCU looks like trash in general is reductive. Yes, Disney sets up movies like a factory assembly line, and that does need to get fixed. Yes, there are many cracks in the effects in these movies. But does that devalue every single effect in every single movie? This is why I get mad whenever people talk about the effects in the MCU. It's only ever reductive. I haven't seen a positive comment made on the digital effects in a Marvel movie for a LONG time. The movies can look good! Great, even! Even the new ones!
#if you're going to talk shit about Marvel#and NOT back it up#Im just going to turn around and leave

COMMISSIONS CLOSED
Heya! I'm Andy, I'm 21, and if you want art or fic to your specifications whipped out lickety-split, I'm your man. If you're interested, DM me or email me at [email protected]
ART
Sketch - $10
Lined - $20
Simple color - $30
Shading - $40
Add 50% of the price for an additional character or backgrounds. For examples, check out the "my art" tag on my blog
I'll do NSFW, but not underage/incest/noncon, gore, mpreg, mecha, or furries. I reserve the right to refuse commissions at my discretion. (That being said, if you have a bit of extra cash and some tolerance for learning, I'm sure I could draw some robots or anthros for ya.)
Specialties: profile pictures, screencap redraws, tongue-in-cheek pinups of transgender Victorian gentlemen
FIC
Prices are simple. I charge $3/100 words, or $30 per 1k words, with an extra $10/hour for time spent on research and editing...which won't be much, because I've got the fastest fic fingers in the West. Unless you want me to write stuff for a fandom I'm not familiar with. That'll take a bit longer.
Want to see the notches on my belt? Check out my ao3. Over the last three years, I've amassed almost half a million words of fic that people like. It's pretty good, if I do say so myself.
Won't do: underage nsfw/incest/noncon, mpreg. I also won't do canons by indie creators; I'm more than happy to tango around The Mouse's copyright, but I'm not gonna mooch off Rusty Quill. I'll do fairly vanilla NSFW, I just don't have the skill to write anything wild.
Specialties: tender first kisses, crack that hits surprisingly hard, getting people invested in rarepairs
I've written for Ace Attorney, BNHA, Mob Psycho 100, Saiki K, Jujutsu Kaisen, the MCU, ATLA, Borderlands, and Detroit: Become Human, and I'm familiar with a lot more canons.
ANIMATICS
This one's for the big spenders. I've got a youtube here where I post animatics, and people seem to like them. So if you've got an audio begging for some characters and you like my style, I'll buckle in and make it happen.
Base price is $10 per frame plus $10 per hour. Frames may be more expensive the more polished you want them. This video ran about $600 for 1:30. (I did throw in some rotoscoped pole dancing at a premium price.)
I DON'T WANNA SPEND THAT MUCH
Understandable! Like my art, but don't want to break out your 20s? That's fine! Drop me some dollars at my Patreon or Ko-Fi. That way, when I evade taxes in the 2021 fiscal year, it'll be for the sheer love of the game rather than necessity.
For legal reasons, that was a joke.

Work Description:
I'm offering a rotoscope! (and what is a rotoscope? From Wikipedia: Rotoscoping is an animation technique that animators use to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame, to produce realistic action.) You can check them here (some are nsfw!) >> http://latelierderiot.tumblr.com/rotoscopes -- I'm starting the bid with a >>10 frames rotoscope<< with an increment of 3 frames per 5$ (I won't do more than 50 frames)<br>? if the bids surpass the number of frames, I'll add flat colors. OR if you want colors, we can talk, and we can reach an agreement where I'll reduce the number of frames. -- it can be NSFW -- I can be picky, and not all gif/videos can be suitable, have more than 1 ready. The only thing I'm asking is to be a good quality gif/video, at least 550px wide, and with good light. If you have any doubt, please contact me. -- I prefer GIFs rather than videos (less work for me) -- Estimated time between 1-2 months, the longer it is, longer it will take. -- Stupid thing, but: if one of the characters you want is Bucky, unless the person in the gif/video has long hair, Bucky will have a bun.

MTH 2020 Pod Bid List
So what are pod bids? A pod bid is a group of people who want to combine efforts and bid as a collective for a specific auction! If you aren’t sure you can compete with other bidders on your own for an auction you’re interested in, they’re a great way to get involved without breaking the bank. Even chipping in $1 or $5 can make a difference; you never know if your $1 is the one to win the auction for the group! The more money, the better your chances—and the more money you raise for charity.
The only requirements for making a pod bid are the following:
Contact the creator first to see if they’re okay with your prompt idea before seeing if anyone is open to joining your pod bid.
One representative per group must be responsible for coordinating the bid and submitting all the donation receipts by our donation deadline: October 31 at 11:59 PM ET (what time is that for me?).
Here are the existing pod bids so far, in alphabetical order by creator. If you want to add your pod bid to the list, send us a DM or an ask on Tumblr, add it in the #pod-bids-chat channel on our Discord server (a great way to find more bidders to join your group), or email us at [email protected].

Creator: Mizzy
Auction: Fic
Pod bid: There's a serial killer on the loose, and Detectives/FBI agents (?) Steve Rogers and Tony Stark find themselves on the same case, chasing the same elusive individual. They're like oil and water, their methods and temperaments making for horrible first impressions and a tense work relationship. That is, until the killer sets his eyes on Tony. When the killer's terrifying letters transform from taunts to a deep, intimate obsession, Steve knows that time is running out to stop the psychopath from hurting the man he's fallen in love with and other innocent people. Brownie points if Tony is isolated and in serious danger at some point. More points if Mizzy goes into depth with the investigative part of the plot (think Zodiac). Long nights, coffee as sustenance, the works. Most likely will be set in the 1970s!

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Light My Darkest Hour
After watching that utter pig vomit from Zack Snyder, Army of the dead, i needed a palette cleanser. I thought about checking out Cruella but passed on that one. Not super interested in it. I looks dope, don’t misunderstand, but the more i saw of it, the more indifferent i became. Disney is bad at trailers and almost always gives too much away, unless it’s an MCU film. I needed something to shake the apathy Snyder put in me so i opted to watch one of my favorites; The Transformers the Movie. The animated one, not the Bayformers one. Why the f*ck would i do that? Sh*t’s like moving from eating puke to drinking diarrhea.
The Nostalgic
Of the top, Unicron is a boss. This was Orson Welles’ last performance and it's definitely a check cashing gig but, my goodness, does he bring the Chaos Bringer to life. He has some of he best lines in the film and delivers them with a quiet, insidious, authority
The animation in this thing is top quality. It’s absolutely stunning, lousy with all of the latest Eighties bells and whistles. Neon saturation, Tron-esque rotoscoping, and absolutely fluid motion work. This is top tier Eighties anime and you don’t see that often in US animation. And, yes, there’s a good chance this thing is legitimate anime. Way back when, the US often shipped their animation work overseas to cut costs. I think the animation houses they used were located in Korea and Japan so, technically, Transformers can be considered anime. Or, at least, parts of it.
I unironically love this schlocky ass soundtrack. A Weird Al song gets a whole ass scene. Like, Dare to be Stupid was written FOR this movie and i would be remiss if i didn’t mention that absolutely brilliant Stan Bush song, Dare. Also, there was this little ear-worm chosen as the title track, The Touch. It was also originally by performed by Stan bush but you might have seen Marky Mark belting out those dulcet power ballads.
I adore this cast. It is one of the best ever to be put to to film, even if the film that gathered that ensemble, is kind of whack. You’ve got your two staples; Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, as Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively. You have THE Chris Latta, dropping one of his last, and best performances, as the cinematic trope, himself, Starscream. Scatman Crothers dropping another fantastic performance as Jazz, even if he had next to no face time. Most of the first season Transformers appear in one form or another and that means their respective voice actors do as well but the newbies really shine here.
I mentioned the master, Orson Welles at the top of this, but this thing is riddled with star power. I mean, they got Leonard Nimoy to voice Galvatron! Spock, himself! That wouldn’t stick going forward, none of these voices would stick into season three of the series, but they re worth mentioning. Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod and then later, the matrix divined Rodimus Prime, and Susan Blu voicing Arcee for the very first time. Arcee is my second favorite Transformer after Starscream so this is a big deal for me.
Listen, the plot to this flick is paper thin but i love it so much! Giant, ancient, planet sized, Transformers that’s basically the Cybertronian devil, straight up coming for Cybertron, itself, and the only way to stop it is to have a chosen one unlock the power of a divine mcguffin? i love this ridiculously epic nonsense! The Transformers is a glorified commercial for toys but this movie decided to lean hard into the “fate of the universe” spiel. The balls, son!
The writing in this movie is o goddamn over-the-top. Some of the sh*t that comes out of Galvatron and Unicron's mouth is the most quotable, most ridiculous sh*t i have ever heard put to script. “For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet, Cybertron. But now, you shall witness its... DISMEMBERMENT!” What even is that line and the way Welles delivers it? F*cking chef kiss!
The Verdict
Objectively, The Transformers the Movie is not a good film. Of course it’s not. It’s terrible paced, weirdly melodramatic while simultaneously being about as deep as a puddle. There are animation errors galore, the human characters are insufferable, and the overall product is mad juvenile. As an adult, you’ll probably hate this film. But i didn’t see it when i was an adult. I saw it when i was a wee lil’ Smokey, lost in the throes of his burgeoning Transformers lust. I f*cking love Transformers, man. Its one of the three major pillars of my life as a kid; Transformers, Godzilla and Spider-Man. Of course i love this movie! Of course i can’t be objective. I know how bad this flick is but the nostalgia and the cheese and the camp and that ridiculous Eighties vibe, won’t let me hate it as much as i try. I can’t recommend you watching it if you don’t have that same love of the franchise like i do but, if you do and have never seen The Transformers the Movie, definitely check it out. It’s peak Generation One f*ckery and i absolutely adore every second of it!

Film Journal: 4.1.17 - 5.14.17
20TH CENTURY WOMEN (Mike Mills, 2016): 8.3
Warm and compassionate without being treacly or even shooting everything in rose-tint. Only suffers so slightly by being extremely episodic, but the characters are so well-realized that it’s enjoyable just being around them, finding out who they are, what they believe, and the struggles they’re going through. This a treat of a film.
THE NEON DEMON (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2016): 2.2
Guys, I'm not sure, what is this movie trying to say?
WAKING LIFE (Richard Linklater, 2011): 7.8
While it’s little more than a series of monologues about various philosophical and pseudo-philosophical thoughts with a rotoscoping overlay, once I got into the flow of this, the movie was over before I knew it. It’s much like any Linklater film. If you’re going to approach this with any level of distancing irony, this is not for you. But come in with a curious mind and there’s a lot to chew on. Life-changing? Probably not. But it’s nice to slow down and just wonder every now and then.
FREE FIRE (Ben Wheatley, 2017): 7.3
Everyone in this movie is having a lot of fun and that does a whole lot in letting me have a lot of fun. It knows what it is and it hits its spots constantly. Kinda bold to see gun violence used as slapstick these days, but I’m for it.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 (James Gunn, 2017): 6.9
Most of the pleasures herein come from visual inventiveness and less on the charm and personality that was so surprising the first time around amidst the perception of MCU films becoming increasingly cookie-cutter, but the charm sorta dissipates here as its more of the same. Some storylines work better than others, the irreverent humor still lands most of the time, and the ultimate conflict is kind of a dud (but that’s to be expected). It’s still a good amount of fun at the theater, and any time I can see Michael Rooker is a good time.
THE HANDMAIDEN (Park Chan-wook, 2016): 7.4
Rides it’s lurid, campy material all the way to the top, balancing delightful black humor and a true commitment to this most soap opera-y of stories. And yes, it’s gorgeous. This is camp that has found a way to be arch and hilarious while still not winking the entire time. It’s quite a ride.
