Day #5: Hung Up, Madonna (2005)

I was 11 or 12 when I first heard this song, via one of those knock off mix CDs my parents used to buy all the time. It’s funny too because since the quality of those kinds of CDs isn’t assured (because, you know, it’s pirated), the song abruptly stops after Madonna’s line of “Tick tick tock, it’s a quarter to two.” I wouldn’t listen to the full song for another 5 or 6 years, but back then I loved the song. I wasn’t physically active – something that followed me well into adulthood – but I could feel my heart thump every time I listen to the song. The song’s energy demands that you move, even if it’s just in your head.

Many, many years later, I’d discover Madonna’s discography, her movies, her interviews, her cringe but self-assured command of her online presence. I’d drag people online shading her, or those (usually on the younger side) erasing her from music history and her contributions in LGBTQ+ activism and in opening the doors for female pop stars to break from the industry’s sexism and misogyny.

So pls tell me whats the point of that imagery? I see no point. I thought of a scientific plot hole in Star Wars.  We would assume midichlorians are basically mitochondria.  In our cells, we have 2 types of DNA, the DNA in the nucleus of the cell and Mitochondrial DNA.  The mDNA comes completely from your mother.  So Anakin wouldn't pass down his mDNA to his kids.

Thoughts On... The Game Maker

We’re making a tradition out of reviewing each year’s new Carol Reed game. Let’s take a look at the eighteenth title in the series: The Game Maker.

There’s something comforting about returning to the beautiful-but-surprisingly dark world of Carol Reed, British-Swedish detective and star of indie developer MDNA Games. The last two years have followed Carol essentially struggling against COVID-19 restrictions in order to do her job. Now restrictions have eased enough that she can take a vacation -- but the case she’s taken in order to fund it proves to be complicated.

Another short recap, because the Carol Reed series is still a relatively under-the-radar indie series: Carol is a British detective living in the Swedish town of Norrköping, who makes her living solving relatively low-stakes, domestic mysteries. Each game is created with pictures of real locations around Sweden, which can make for visuals that are both arrestingly beautiful and oddly terrifying.

In her most recent case, Carol is asked by Dalton Jonson to find his wife Daria, who has been missing for several days. While there doesn’t initially seem to be a reason for Daria’s disappearance, Carol finds among her things a CD with a crudely made video game on it. The game seems to be accusing Daria of some unspecified crime. So Carol needs to find the game’s mysterious creator, as it’s her only lead to discover what happened to the missing woman.

It quickly becomes clear that there’s more going on than Daria’s vanishing. The clues in the game quickly lead Carol to a series of murders that seem unconnected at first blush, and the stones she kicks over reveals increasingly uncomfortable secrets about the game maker, Daria, and the people surrounding them both.

The Vanishing of Daria

First thing I think I should do is give a trigger warning for anyone planning to play this game: It contains depictions of racism, Nazi imagery, hate crimes, and (spoiler alert) references to (mercifully undepicted) rape and suicide. The Carol Reed games have never shied away from uncomfortable subject matter, but it’s still worth listing it out so everyone knows what they’re getting.

This is not necessarily one of Carol’s most fascinating mysteries upfront. It takes a little bit of time for the hook to sink in. On the surface, it appears to be your standard missing persons case -- even Carol treats it a bit lightly at first, getting involved only to fund her upcoming vacation. But then she finds the game and realizes that Daria’s vanishing is a lot more sinister than it appears.

The games themselves are sinister enough, with the creator taunting the player with the truth of their crimes. As the case progresses, Carol connects the mysterious game maker with three unsolved murders, an older and more horrifying killing, and finally to a group of local fanatics with neo-Nazi inclinations. Even she becomes somewhat disturbed the deeper she delves.

I don’t want to necessarily get into spoiler territory, but this case has some satisfying twists and turns. I much prefer this mystery to our last one, because at least there are stakes here. It feels less like Carol is chasing a ghost story and more like she’s opened the door to a closet with some particularly nasty skeletons, and I quite enjoyed seeing the culprit get their comeuppance.

A Tour of Norrköping

Strangely, for Carol’s first post-quarantine adventure, she seems to spend a lot of time in her own apartment. She plays most of the mysterious games on her own home computer -- which, by the way, looks even nicer than the gaming PC I played this title on. I’m not annoyed by that in the slightest. But seriously, Carol’s home is as lovely as ever, and after so many years returning to it is like being wrapped in a warm, familiar blanket.

Speaking of the mysterious games, each of these presents a small minigame that Carol must solve in order to progress. The minigames aren’t difficult, by any means, but they will present a difficulty for the colorblind. Also, there’s a subplot where Carol actually visits the offices of MDNA Games and discusses the case, which is almost too meta and hurts my brain the more I think about it.

Carol doesn’t meet much in the way of suspects in this game, and I won’t spoil the identities of those she does meet, to preserve the mystery. But she does spend a bit of time with her friend Stina and her boyfriend Jonas. While she does get a bit frustrated doing errands, she’s much warmer to them than she has been in the previous games. Stina gives Carol a corkboard to use as a deductive tool that ends up serving no purpose -- but it’s the thought that counts.

Speaking of the environments, Carol spends a bit more time in urban environments than usual. Her usual environments are the beautiful countryside or abandoned urban areas. Here she walks around areas of her hometown that should be populated and yet are mysteriously empty. It’s almost more eerie than anything else in the game.

Should you buy this game?

If you’re looking for an intro to the Carol Reed series, this is definitely an easy “yes.” The Game Maker properly conveys both the series’s beauty and charms, as well as the tone of its mysteries and adventures. I also think anyone who is a fan of point-and-click adventure games, as usual, should give the Carol Reed series a try if they haven’t already.

The only person I would recommend not playing it is one who’s uncomfortable with the aforementioned distressing subject matter. I won’t lie -- the finale of this game, where you uncover what really happened to Daria and whose murder is the impetus behind all this, is one of the darkest and most unpleasant out of any game in the series. I don’t want anyone who’s expecting just a light, fluffy adventure to make it that far and then be hit with something they weren’t expecting. So let the buyer beware.

Another Take on Tax Reporting

Corporate taxes are an endlessly fascinating niche of financial analysis. Today we have a prime example of that phenomenon, courtesy of a research note shared with us from Morgan Stanley.

The note explores how a recent tax increase meant to cover the costs of corporate tax cuts from 2017 actually lowered tax rates for numerous technology and biotech companies. The note caught our eye because Morgan Stanley used Calcbench data to perform the analysis, and of course we’re shameless self-promoters around here — but also because this truly is a fascinating glimpse into the topsy-turvy world of corporate reporting.

So what happened? As described in the research note, starting this year companies are required to amortize R&D tax deductions over five years (15 years for foreign R&D), instead of those expenses being immediately deductible. Except, that move to raise taxes gives companies more incentive to use something known as the Foreign-Derived Intangible Income(FDII) deduction. That’s a deduction for domestic IP-based goods & services sold to foreign customers, designed as an incentive to keep new tech and intellectual property here in the United States rather than housed in low-tax jurisdictions overseas.

The FDII deduction lets FDII income be taxed at a 13 percent effective rate, rather than the statutory 21 percent rate. So essentially, the push to raise taxes by amortizing R&D is driving companies to use the FDII deduction — and its lower effective rate — more aggressively.

Which firms benefited from this convoluted tax incentive? Morgan Stanley compiled the following chart.

The biggest winners were technology companies; and indeed, almost all companies in the chart above are tech companies or others that run heavy on R&D and intellectual property. The only exceptions are Nike ($NKE) and McDonalds ($MCD).

At specific companies, these pressures lead to disclosures such as this filed by Moderna ($MDNA):

Effective January 1,2022, research and development expenses are required to be capitalized and amortized for U.S. tax purposes. Unless modified or repealed, and based on current assumptions, the mandatory capitalization increases our cash tax liabilities, but also increases our FDII deduction resulting in a decrease to our effective tax rate.

This song came to me and challenged my thinking about settling for the familiar. Many times, while we were preparing, I was oscillating between being excited, looking forward to the opportunities and adventure, and then being nervous and just wanting to stick with my normal, comfortable, unchallenging life. You don’t even really have to realise for it to weigh on you. Packing up your life, saying goodbye to friends, trading the familiar and routine for a new routine and the unfamiliar. In fact, it’s probably one of the easiest move-to-a-new-country one could do. Now the jump from New Zealand to Australia is not that hard. I suppose it’s a reflection of where I was, mentally, emotionally, physically, that these lyrics stuck. I suppose I was just in the right frame of mind when this song came along, punched me in the mouth and got me to pay attention. Maybe I was not a fan of their earlier stuff, or songs shown to me before just didn’t click. They were yet another band that completely flew under my radar for whatever reason. I had heard about Architects before, and maybe even heard one or two of their songs, but never really gave them another thought. Seriously, I could spill a lot of digital ink about this album, going through each song with a fine-toothed comb. From their now fully released, and absolutely amazing, 9th album – For Those That Wish To Exist. To one song in particular – Animals – by the band Architects. This month’s music review is going to be more of a Sunday Fireside, but set to music. And I really can’t explain why, even though I am about to attempt just that. It seemed to encompass everything I was feeling and internalising. Something about this song embodied my thoughts at the time. It came to me via Apple Music’s Heaps Heavy playlist, and after the first listen I was hooked. Loretta Lynn – Happy BirthdayĪnother birthday song with a sting in the tale, on “Happy Birthday,” country legend Loretta Lynn wishes a happy birthday and also a fond farewell to an ex-beau.While we were deciding-slash-preparing for our move to Melbourne, I had a song that would always pop up. Sentimental, yet passionate song of celebration from the much-celebrated “American Pie” hit-maker. The bird and the bee employ slick electropop for this lovely, personal birthday song that crescendos with, “I will love you on your birthday/I will love you better than them.” Don McLean – Birthday Song Her best is the inspirational ode, “Never Grow Up.” the bird and the bee – Birthday Sample lyric: “Hope I didn’t spoil your birthday, I’m not acting like a lady/So I’ll close this note to you with good luck and wishes too.” Taylor Swift – Never Grow UpĪny great singer-songwriter has plenty to say about aging and birthdays. This tune is a melancholic break-up song, sung from the vantage point of someone writing a note to their former significant other. Holidays and special days are the hardest for the broken-hearted. The Tune Weavers – Happy, Happy Birthday Baby For someone trying to send a heartfelt birthday message, it works every time. Rascal Flatts’ “My Wish For You” can be used for just about any special occasion, given the general nature of its inspirational lyrics. Drake – Ratchet Happy Birthdayĭrake knew that opening a song with the line “It’s your f-in’ birthday/It’s a f-in’ celebration” was going to get a bit of attention. The Smiths – Unhappy BirthdayĪnother one from the dark side of the birthday moon, Morrissey comes to wish you many miserable returns on your special day. Strangely, only a bonus track from Madonna’s MDNA, yet this exuberant track is perfect for a birthday celebration of any age. Party planners were reputedly hired to help produce the video for this Top 40 hit from Katy Perry’s Prism album wherein viewers are treated to a number of creative birthday cakes throughout.

If your Johnny left with a Judy, you should feel free to cry. OK, “It’s My Party” does admittedly examine a more melancholic side of what should be a special day but hey, it’s still a great song and it is your party, after all. Neil Sedaka had his own rendition for 16th birthday celebrations called “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” but the most popular one of that era for this age group was “16 Candles,” a tune that later went on to become the title song of the 1984 John Hughes film. Sweet 16 is still an important milestone today, but it was an especially big deal in the 1950s and 60s.

It also featured in the quintessential birthday movie Sixteen Candles and was covered rather memorably by The Ting Tings on Yo Gabba Gabba. "Give Me All Your Luvin'" was released as a single from Madonna's 2012 album, MDNA. The single was released on February 3, 2012, and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song features guest vocals by rappers Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

I was 36 years old when "Give Me All Your Luvin'" was released as a single. At the time, I found the song to be rather catchy musically, but the raps personally didn't do much for me. Over the years, I've come to find that while I find the music to the catchy, the overall song just isn't quite as strong as it could be. It's not a bad song, but it doesn't rank among Madonna's classics.

The music video is... something else.  It features Madonna lip-syncing the song in various locations, flanked by cheerleaders (Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. are themselves, while the other cheerleaders wear masks that obscure what they look like). As Madonna wanders through the town, she is flanked by football players that act like bodyguards. At the end of the video, Madonna is performing at a club, accompanied by Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. Yes, the video is as strange as it sounds like from this description. To me, that wasn't one of Madonna's stronger music videos.
