This week, Maggie is joined by someone we all know and love. He’s your favorite fake TV psychic, but this week he’s just himself. James Roday Rodriguez joins Maggie in the studio to talk about his me time, which involves lots of fantasy football, his three pups, vodka, and a specific type of puppetry that only James can describe.

A semi-formal review of pre Critical Role live action Ashley Johnson content
*this is not an exhaustive list, just the films/shows I've watched personally. yes i am biased. Blindspot is not included but I do have many positive feelings about seasons 1 and 2*
Crime Scene Investigation, season 7 episode 21 : Ending Happy (2007)
Tumblr media
Character - Dreama Little
Plot -
When a has-been boxer is killed, the team must establish which of several life-threatening acts actually ended his life.
Review -
As someone who hasn't seen any CSI prior to this, I thoroughly enjoyed it. This episode puts Ashley in the shoes of a sweet prostitute with a southern drawal and more smarts than one would expect.
The episode was engaging and made me feel very empathetic for Dreama. She certainly stood out from the main cast in just a few scenes.
Rating - 8/10
Spooked Episodes 1-4 (2014)
Tumblr media
Character - Morgan
Plot -
Five paranormal investigators help the citizens of their city with everything from ghost sightings to possession and aliens.
Review -
This was a decent, turn-off-your-brain spoof on paranormal investigation shows. I found the writing to be a little shotty at times and many things could have been fleshed out more. Despite this, it was an entertaining binge at only 4 20 minute episodes available for free.
I found Ashley's character one of the most entertaining of the group. Quickly, a love triangle forms around her and sets off a lot of drama within the team but the resolution was an oddly sweet one.
Rating - 6/10
Annie : A Royal Adventure (1995)
Tumblr media
Character - Annie Warbucks
Plot -
In this sequel to the 1982 film, Annie and her friends venture to England where hijinks ensue and the preteens must stop a plot to overthrow the monarchy.
Review -
This was a fever dream of a film, but in a fun way. I didn't expect much going into it, and I wasn't disappointed. It was very childish but not in an annoying way. There was a song, which I enjoyed.
Rating - 5/10
The Failures (2003)
Tumblr media
Character - Lily/Lilian
Plot -
When a misfit teenager meets a suicidal outcast, she comes up with a plan to help him kill himself. Too bad love gets in the way.
Review -
This was the best movie I've watched in a while. I was completely engaged. The writing was witty, nuanced, and every character was so well done. Neither cynicism or optimism was the right answer, life just is what it is.
Ashley gave a standout performance here. Lily is so well done. She's not good or wise, she's just a dumb 17 year old who thinks she knows everything. Her intentions and motivations are messy just like everyone else here. Nobody is fully bad or good. They're all just people.
Rating - 10/10
Growing Pains : The Movie (2000)
Tumblr media
Character - Chrissy Seaver
Plot -
Jason and Maggie Seaver move back to their hometown so Maggie can run for public office. Quickly, things spiral into a mess when the kids get involved.
Review -
This movie was... fine. It did what it was trying to do, I think. When viewed as a continuation of the original series, it falls a little flat. I found Carol's relationship drama to be really boring, and the writers seemed confused on who they wanted Chrissy to be. Overall, there was a lot going on in this that makes it the far weaker of the two.
Rating - 4/10
Growing Pains : Return Of The Seavers (2004)
Tumblr media
Character - Chrissy Seaver
Plot -
Jason and Maggie are finally ready to sell the house and see the world now that the kids have all moved out. As it turns out, this is not okay with the oldest Seavers, and shenanigans ensue.
Review -
This is the far better of the two Growing Pains movies. The plot is much more engaging and the characters feel more like themselves. Chrissy also gets a lot more of a plotline here as she deals with her awful love life. Overall, it's a better version of what happens to these characters 15 years later.
Rating - 6/10
Otis (2008)
Tumblr media
Character - Riley Lawson
Plot -
Teenage girl Riley is the newest victim of serial killer/degenerate loser Otis, who just wants to take a girl to "prom". When a misunderstanding between Riley and her family occurs, they devise a plan to murder her assaulter... and get the wrong guy.
Review -
The first half of this movie was tolerable, almost enjoyable. After Riley's escape, the entire thing goes downhill. Don't let the box art fool you, this is the worst movie I have seen in a *long* time.
The only redeeming quality was Ashley's acting. She was wonderful as always and was the only character I felt any positive emotions towards.
Rating - 3/10

is denis really a horrible husband to maggie?
Haha, that depends who you ask. Personally, there are three main issues I take with him:
• The wandering eye: After her death, a source revealed that she had harboured suspicions of him cheating on her in 2002 but immediately dismissed it as being a result of dementia... I can’t know for sure whether there is any truth to this so I won’t present it as factual, but there were also two seperate confirmed instances in the 1980s where he groped a woman in full view of Margaret and other witnesses. And that time he read playboy magazines on her tour bus during a campaign trip, but I digress.
• The mood swings: Notably the infamous incident of him drunkenly slamming a table over her strategic decision of not firing Nigel Lawson. She herself has also alluded to his impulsive fits and impatience, and the way she tells it makes it seems like they’re frequent occurences. I know it's not *that* deep but it is a red flag to me, and probably something that made him unpleasant to be around longterm. I feel like with all the responsibilities she had, she didn't need the added task of managing her grown husband's outbursts.
• The early 2000s treatment: I don't think this is widely-known by the public but he treated her pretty carelessly during his later life and particularly in 2000-2003. There's an article detailing how he would yell at her for forgetting things (like that time she forgot to boil his eggs and he went ballistic) which seems beyond cruel considering she was dealing with an actual illness. He also refused to accompany her to her increasingly regular hospital appointments and was generally very frugal when it came to her health (eg: her teeth surgery). I'll link the article here:
http://surl.li/shycz
To his credit, she's talked a lot about his constant presence bringing a sense of stability and permanence to her tumultuous political life. And he apparently could calm her down and distract her whenever she was stressed out, so there’s that! There are generally plenty of positive stories, I just think it's also interesting to see other perspectives.
For what it’s worth, I do believe that she felt very happy with him and wasn’t introspective enough to analyse whether or not that happiness was entirely healthy.

Books I’ve Read in August
A mixed bag this month
Cosmoknights by Hannah Templer | 4/5
“Chin up, brave girl.”
An enjoyable and quick read that got me out of a reading slump 🤞 I loved the premise of the book, and the artwork is genuinely so beautiful!! The novel feels like a mix of sci-fi and sports fiction (two genres I absolutely love), and overall had so much fun with this book!
Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser & Robyn Smith | 2.5/5
“Oh, whatever. This is the remix!”
The illustrations were wonderful, and I liked the way that hair was used as symbolism throughout the story (although I was disappointed as it didn’t occur as frequently as the title led me to believe). I liked the idea of having a collection of shorter slice-of-life stories with an overarching plot, though I feel that this book didn’t achieve it to its fullest potential; many parts felt unresolved and inconsistent, contributing to a lack of overall cohesiveness. I also didn’t like the way that their depiction of depression and medication was handled (and also left unresolved).
Squad by Maggie Tokuda-Hall & Lisa Sterle | 2/5
How close anger and hunger are, really. Like different songs in the same key. They can be hard to differentiate.
A fast paced read that tries to mix dark academia vibes in literature with the werewolf genre. The artwork is excellent, and I loved the character designs and the use of color. Though the premise is awesome, the execution of it is subpar at best. It felt cliche and surface level, and overall lacked substance. That, along with the frequent micro-aggressions, tainted my perception of the novel.
How to Bite Your Neighbour and Win a Wager by D. N. Bryn | 3/5
“I want you to bite me.”
This is a different take on the vampire genre than I was expecting; loved the worldbuilding (low key really dense for the length of the novel!!) and the way that vampirism is more of a medical condition rather than a supernatural one. But while the worldbuilding was strong, the chemistry between the two leads unfortunately was not. I feel like this would’ve been a much better read had the characters been given more time to learn to love and forgive each other.
The Only One Left by Riley Sager | 2/5
The thing I remember most--the thing I still have nightmares about--is when it was all but over.
Ok [cracks knuckles] let’s do this. The beginning of the novel was my favorite, and the author did a wonderful job of setting the scene. However, the atmosphere was not maintained throughout the course of the story. My main issue with this book is its pacing, and the fact that most of the twists felt very randomly dropped in (especially near the end).
The Alchemy of Moonlight by David Ferraro | 1.5/5
“To live in sin in plain sight of everyone.”
This is a retelling of a gothic story, but it wasn’t a very good one. Both of the romances involving Emile felt very underdeveloped; whilst Bram was an incredible supporting character, Henri was very lacklustre. Henri is in a position of power over Emile, and reading about his manipulative actions and attempts at forcing a relationship painted him clearly as an antagonist rather than the leading love interest. Also, his poorly written redemption arc very much soured my impression of the novel. The premise is promising, but it’s execution was disappointing.
A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson | 4/5
Maybe it’s a matter of tenses. Of grammar. Our love existed, it does exist, it will exist. On the great continuum of time, perhaps it is the tenses that will cease to be. What does the scientist in you think of that?
This has no reason to be so sad 😭 Loved almost every minute of reading this book omg!! I really like the way that different characters represent the past, present, and future of this tiny town. I thought the characters were well fleshed out, and while the pacing was a tad slow, the story actually benefited a lot from that!! Would recommend :)

Joining her is a discombobulated and skeptical alternate, James T Kirk (Hel-lo again, Paul Wesley!), and much of the success of their mission lies in the secret horde of our new favorite Lanthanite. Check out what Wesley and Peck have to say about bringing these proto-versions of Kirk and Spock to Strange New Worlds! .@ethangpeck and @paulwesley share how they bring their own personal touch to two iconic #StarTrek characters pic.twitter.com/9m4zdsg9hy — CBS Studios (@CBSTVStudios) June 22, 2023 The Witcher (Netflix) The adventure continues as Geralt and Yennefer try to keep Ciri safe while honing her powers, as she may be the only hope of saving the Continent from their extra-dimensional enemies. Of course, it's not like they need to look in other dimensions for enemies. Surrounded by intrigue, pursued by multiple armies, and driven by the knowledge of imminent otherworldly peril, they must maneuver politics and dodge plots if they are going to survive. Of course, knowing Cavill is on his last arc as Geralt, there's some foreboding in the air. Season 3 Act 1 drops us into it with five episodes. Act 2 arrives July 27. Friday, June 30 Warrior (Max) Close to three years since Cinemax went out of business, leaving Warrior and other shows in limbo in terms of continuance, Max heard our prayers, and they answered. Warrior returns with the same great story, epic scraping scenes, sex, blood, and intense Western Spaghetti Music. If the trailer is any indication, we will have fun this season. We will be covering the season episodically, so check back here after watching. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89dEEKEzglw[/embed] The Crowded Room (Apple TV+) We have been limited to Danny's point of view for the past five episodes of The Crowded Room Season 1. Book Review #40 of 2023--
Tumblr media
Misfit by Elle Kennedy. Rating: 2.5 stars.
Read from April 9th to 11th.
I think it’s time to admit that Elle Kennedy isn’t the author for me. I have read four of her works now and not rated anything above 3 stars. I’m realizing that while I enjoy the premise of anything I come across from her, the execution is just not it. This one follows a high school senior named RJ who is thrust into a prep school when his mother suddenly marries her latest boyfriend. RJ has no issues switching school since every single high school he’s been to so far has expelled him. But bonding with his new step-brother and living with a bunch of snobby rich kids? That’s a whole new world for him to adjust to. But things start looking up when he bumps into the headmaster’s daughter, Sloane.
We get a little bit of forbidden romance since it’s the headmaster’s daughter and she’s off limits. We also get some rich people drama, but I would make the argument that it wasn’t depicted very well since a lot of the drama that unfolds could happen anywhere. I was waiting for a super out of touch rich kid to wander onto the page and it never really happened. We do get a kid named Laweson--though the book specifies several times, and with good reason, that he is 18--who lives in a perpetual high 24/7. And maybe the rich kids not acting like rich kids is something that bothers me because I read a good depiction of that with The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. And, the thing that probably made this the most annoying for me to read, is how much sex is on the forefront of everyone’s mind. I know I walked into this one knowing it’s a romance and knowing it’s Elle Kennedy so I should expect the sex scenes to come up. But the amount of sex in this book was so off putting to me. I couldn’t go more than one chapter before someone is viewing someone else with a super sexual lens or someone actually having sex. There’s also a big issue for me when it comes to that side character Lawson which was that he ends up having sex with two of his teachers, multiple times, during this book. I don’t like that premise in any work of fiction. It was really off putting.
I still think the author does a good job with timelines, pacing, and setting. She’s always good in those areas. I also think she did a good job with the family drama and that mystery related to Sloane’s sister. It was probably the best part of the book. Though, this book did end on a cliffhanger which was annoying. I thought this was going to be a companion series and that the mystery presented was going to be wrapped up, but it wasn’t. I don’t know. It’s super hard to rate and review this one because it was a fast and easy read--I read half of it on the plane ride to NYC yesterday--but I didn’t really enjoy it. I think if you like Elle Kennedy more than I do and you don’t have the teacher/student relationship dislike that I do then you’ll probably really enjoy this one.

LAST SONG: I Love You, Honeybear by Father John Misty, thanks to the incredibly talented @clickbaitcowboy who linked it in THIS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS DEANCAS ARTWORK. i've pretty much had it on repeat since i rebooped it on my spn blog this morning x)
LAST MOVIE: Battinson The Batman for the 3rd time (so far lol): I went to the cinema twice to watch it then streamed it at home, yesterday.
CURRENTLY READING: Eh, just bits and bobs because I can't seem to concentrate on much at the moment... I'm spanking little one-shots from all my fandoms here and there; still on (another!) hiatus from reading Maggie Stiefvater's Mister Impossible (because I don't want to finish it lol); dipping in and out of The Autistic Trans Guide To Life by Yenn Purkis and Wenn Lawson; and I've always got a poetry book on the go—I've been re-reading Buddy Wakefield's Live For A Living, as recommended by the super lovely and super talented @sharkfish (check out their sublime writing HERE ON AO3—sooooo good!) a few years ago. Oh and I re-read A Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde on a whim the other day.

The local indoor pool it was.
While the guys were busy figuring out which one of them was more athletic, Terra and Dahlia took the time to catch up.
“I still can’t believe you two have really moved in together already,” Dahlia admitted. “It feels kind of surreal. Like, we’re all just thrown together in Boris’s house and now, the majority of the people who were there have totally paired up. You and Matt, Carly and Wade, Leo and Julius. You know, those two have moved in together too.”
“So they were crushing on one another, huh? I thought there was some chemistry there,” Terra smiled. “Not everyone has paired up with someone in Boris’s house, though. I saw a picture of Frankie with this girl... strangest thing, she looks really familiar. And then there was a picture of Lawson with this blue-haired fairy.”
“Oh, that’s Maggie!” Dahlia told her. “I don’t think they’re dating. She’s a close childhood friend or something - they’re practically like siblings. I’ve heard she’ll go to the Academy with you next year.”
“With me? Are you sure you won’t come back?”
“I don’t know. I like the idea of studying at the academy, but I’m scared after going to the Stoneshields the last time.”
“Understandable,” Terra knew what she went through. “You can’t live in hiding forever, though.”
“I know. I keep telling Chris that, but he’s, well, he’s Chris.”
“What’s up with the two of you, anyways?” Terra asked. She recalled them dancing at her brother’s wedding. Was there more?
“We tolerate each other. And we don’t punch each other out anymore,” Dahlia joked, referring to their first meeting. “I admit, he has some great survival skills, but he’s always looking out for a potential enemy. Even more than I do, which is really saying something.”
“Can’t blame him for that,” Terra told her. “He’s been through hell because of the coven.”
“I know. So has everyone who’s ever had to deal with them.” She leaned back. “I just wish we could finally breathe easy, you know.”
“Maybe it’ll happen?” she could hope. “By the way, we’ve planted some plasma fruit in our garden. I’m not promising anything, but if we manage to grow them, they’re all yours.”
“Seriously? That’s so wonderful of you!” Dahlia smiled. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank us just yet. Race you to the water?”
