It makes me so happy to see how passionate you are about paleo!! That kind of dedication is so lovely to engage with
Oh I'm glad! I worry I'm rambling aimlessly so knowing that at least some people are enjoying it is nice to hear c:
For some paleo related fun, here's a huge Eurasian Pleistocene Big Cat sketchdump from 2023 when I was brainstorming for White Cat, Gold Plains

I still like a lot of these, though I was obviously trying to lean more into realism than I do in Kindred Also they're not Fleet Fangs, they're a different species within the same genera, Homotherium latidens and Panthera (leo) spelaea
Past me was some kind of madlad trying to put spots on things, no wonder the comic died after 10 pages c':

Voltron characters as algebraic expressions/distributions:
PIDGE: the binomial distribution
Tumblr media
Binomial distributions display probabilities for a set number of binary trials (only two choices) within an experiment. I feel like this represents her because of her experimental nature as well as the two choices she was faced with in s1: saving the universe or leaving to save matt and her dad.
LANCE: sine function
Tumblr media
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE WAVES!! Bro is smooth and bro swings both ways. Also, a sine wave is a periodic function, meaning it repeats the same pattern again and again. This can represent how while Lance is moving forward, he feels like is isn't growing or isn't more, but is rather stuck, bouncing between highs and lows.
KEITH: cosecant function
Tumblr media
cosecant functions are the reciprocals of sin function (csc=1/sin), so this shows how Keith "reflects" or mirrors Lance. Additionally, the periods of csc functions start at positive or negative infinity and then stray towards the origin, but never quite reach it. This represents how Keith is so far away, and how everytime he comes back he leaves again, and how "home" always feels out of reach for him (csc function approaches horizontal asymptote but never truly gets there)
ALLURA: exponential function
Tumblr media
The exponential function starts at an infintessimally small value that is nearly zero, and then rises drastically. The "flatter" values of the graph represent her comatose, and the sudden increase of values reflect her increased power, fight, and drive. It continues to increase forever, which I think can represent her death in canon. She transcends a barrier that the others cannot reach.
CORAN: uniform distribution
Tumblr media
MY BOY Coran is the most unwavering support ever. The key aspect of a uniform distribution is that it is always the same value wherever it exists. It doesn't change or shift, just like how Coran has always, ALWAYS been able to constantly be there for the team and the universe.
HUNK: step function
Tumblr media
While canon does him dirty, Hunk rises in both confidence and skill throughout the show. He's very methodic and is also a backbone to the team, which is why I gave him a function that's broken so evenly and is still rising. He is the type of character who climbs up. Also, I first used step functions in an engineering class!
SHIRO: hyperbolic function
Tumblr media
OMG YALL ALR KNOW!! Not all hyperbolic functions map this way fyi, but THESE particular ones are sooooo Shiro. There is two parts of the graph, one positive and one negative. They never touch but they mirror each other identically and they're mapped by the same function. This represents Kuron and Shiro. They're both made from the same DNA, appear identical, but they have different minds and goals (the same way both parts of this function approach different values as x approaches infinity!)

Doing the maths: Grian's failure at getting a mending book
lots of talk about maths and probabilities below the cut! but there's a graph and simple explanation at the end if you want to get the gist of it and are bad at maths.
(I am still young and learning maths, critique/advice always welcomed)
What are the odds of getting a mending book in Minecraft?
(I am assuming Grian has been doing all his fishing with Luck of the Sea 3)
The probability of a mending book is actually a bit annoying to estimate. The Minecraft Wiki lists fishing up an enchanted book as 1.9% chance. This is for ANY enchanted book. The Minecraft wiki talks about how the chance of an enchantment being selected is calculated. Mending has a weight of 2. Using the table, mending has a probability of 2/135.
However, Grian is looking for any book with mending, not just a pure mending book. Additional enchantments are calculated in a different way, involving RNG, which means it won't be as easy to model. Due to this reason, I'll just be using the odds for a pure mending book throughout.
TLDR: a mending book has a 0.028..% chance (2/135*0.019*100)
Grian's Data
According to this screenshot, Grian has used a fishing rod 5679 times. This number may not be fully accurate, as it includes the times he's fished other players, rather than just fished for items, but it is a good estimate.
To help visualise this data, with a median waiting time between catches of 17.5 seconds, Grian has spent over 20 hours fishing so far! He may have a problem.
Is this statistically significant?
Hypothesis testing (p-value approach):
H0: p = 19/67500 (the null hypothesis - he has no mending books because of chance)
H1: p < 19/67500 (the alternate hypothesis - he has no mending books due to different odds)
5679 trials, 0 mending books
X ~ B(5679, 19/67500) (binomial distribution, 5679 tries with a probability of a mending book being 19/67500, where X is the number of mending books)
p(X=0) (what is the probability the number of mending books being 0)
p = 0.2021473392
Now, the point at which data becomes significant is subjective. For instance, you *could* get a million heads in a row flipping a coin, it's not impossible, but at a certain point, you can begin to say "okay there's something not normal about this". For this approach, the closer the p-value is to 0, the more evidence there is against the null hypothesis . The p-value here is far above a significance level of 0.01, or 0.05, or 0.1. There isn't a clear line between significant/non-significant, but this is answer is quite a bit far from 0
With this, I cannot reject the null hypothesis.
Personal conclusion: this is not statistically significant, Grian is just unlucky.
Are other values statistically significant?
Gem's proposed 9000: results in a p-value of 0.079... more significant than Grian's number but I don't imagine Mojang would be too concerned. As said though, it's all subjective.
I am bad at maths, what does all this mean?
Here is a graph, showing what number of mending books you might have after 5679 tries. The height of the bar represents the probability of getting that amount. The numbers at the top are the (rounded) numbers I used in my calculation
Tumblr media
The pink column is 0 mending books - like what Grian has! As you can see, it is less likely than getting 1 or 2 books, but not too uncommon to happen.
End conclusion: Grian has bad luck. Like, not as hilariously bad as he thinks, but still bad. If he keeps going, chances are he will get a mending book, but I think he should probably stop fishing because at this point he has a problem.

my designs for the admin quintet :]
Tumblr media
design notes:
Shedletsky- I don't really have a design for him, and I am not drawin gthat fuckass shirt thing. Decided to make him around 5'5 ft tall.
Builderman- Heavily inspired by Sonya's design (on tiktok). He is so tired of everyone. I feel like people are forgetting that he's 4'9 ft tall canonically, he's short af man.
Dusekkar- Wise pumpkin deer boy :3 He is deer :3 Also made him 5'5 ft tall, just like Shedletsky.
Doombringer- Absolute fucking GIANT. Utter behemoth. Lowkey he reminds me of a puppy but idk. Wanted to give him some giant gloves and boots to match with his bucket-helmet cause I thought it looked nice. Also I gave him freckles for the sake of it. Also I made him around 7'8 ft tall.
Stickmasterluke/Luke- I wanted to give him, and I quote; "lumberboy swagger," I have no idea what it means but that's what he looks like. Gave him the same double-chest I give winged characters cause I really like that feature. Also though it's not shown, I decided to give him small faulty wings attached to his collarbone as a result of a wing mutation, so they're hidden under his shirt. I also made him around 6'5 ft tall.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
Forsakened Doombringer
I wanted to give him a sort of fallen angel sort of vibe but I probably failed at that. I also decided to give him wings to represent Luke, as I headcanon them to be really close friends. I gave him a dog muzzle attached to the bucket helmet as I largely see Doombringer as a sort of beastly man. Also furred cape for the sake of it.
Also the text next to him is an altered version of the secret message in Binomi by Maretu.

Jaune: What the fuck do you mean you ‘just guessed?!’
Dr Polendina: I guessed. *shrugs* I guessed that the synapses should be beta-binomial distributed and I turned her on and she worked. I had my baby girl.
Jaune: You accidentally made a person!
Dr Polendina: Sure High School Students accidentally make people all the time and you’re fine with that. I do it once in a laboratory and you’re horrified.
Jaune: What?! What the fuck are you talking about?!

IGNORE WHAT I SAID THAT WAS CRINGE OF ME TO SAY I SHOULDVE MINDED MY OWN BUSINESS BACK THEN FUCK
sorry for bothering ya 😭😭😭
sorry for bothering you but
"given that f(x) = x^2 - 5 and g(x) = 2x + 3, what is f(g(x)?" from this post
x^2 - 5 2x + 3 = (x^2 - 5) (2x + 3)
[ use the FOIL METHOD; First, Outer, Inner, Last. search that up if you want to idk ]
= (x^2 · 2x) + (x^2 · 3) + (5 · 2x) + (5 · 3) = 2x^3 + 3x^2 + 10x + 5 = 5x^5 + 25x [ = 30x^6 ]
what the fuck am I doing with my life,, solving a random math problem on tumblr for no reason from some obey me post
im absolutely sure that my solution and equation is utterly incorrect cuz I think so and im a terrible explainator (what isbthag that ia not a word) (and yes i did calculate this on a piece of scrap paper I found on my side tabel cuz I'm boredmele)
Dawg I'mma be real w you I don't understand how I like activated everybody's (in the om fandom) math tingle like 😭😭
so many reposts and/or comments have been ppl solving it and it's kinda funny ngl
I love you and everyone who wants to help me w math that ik how to do :D
OK BUT ANYWAYS
I learned how to solve it differently actually; so instead of using foil (LOVE FOIL FUCK THE BOX METHOD IT CAN KILL ITSELF) you quite literally plug in g(x) as x for f(x) cause it's like.... yk f(g(x)
So it's literally (2x + 3)^2
All you gotta do is plug in the value of g(x) as the x for f
Yeah :DD

This was originally going to be a more structured post, but my plan was stifling my motivation to write so I fear I’ll have to improvise. /silly
I have been growing less and less attached to how I used to describe my identity. More specifically, it no longer feels right to call myself “Falco tinnunculus, an Eurasian Kestrel”, or “Negaprion acutidens, a Sicklefin Lemon Shark” etc. This isn’t to say that I no longer feel like a kestrel, or a shark, or any other identity I still have listed in my intro. I just don’t feel as though going into that level of detail, down to the binomial, reflects me very well.
I have stated before that I do not consider myself biologically nonhuman, only physically, because what is fact about my body to me is not evidenced through scientific means. I think this extends to my nonhumanity as a whole — I am what I am, but there will be those who disagree, and they can justify themselves using scientific definitions. (For example, I am not a bird through in accordance to the biological species concept, because I cannot mate with theriform birds to produce fertile offspring. For various reasons.)
No, my experience of being me stems from other things. I am me for my morphology. I am me for my behaviour. I am me because of my feelings and my self-perception. I am me for many reasons unrelated to how species are typically defined.
This is where my species anarchism comes in (thank you, @aldmeric, for introducing this term to me). Although the idea of a “species” has its uses in many fields of study, it is still a flawed concept, and there are many organisms that do not perfectly align with how species are determined. I don’t believe taxonomy should be strictly applied to identity. How can the wonderful, amorphous mess of feelings and beliefs be categorised through such rigidity? Personally, it doesn’t not feel authentic to tie precise species to my experiences.
I still find some merit in citing certain species as a general idea of what it means to be me — there are behaviours and ranges that I feel most aligned to, and these narrow down the kinds of organisms I share traits with. I like being able to convey this. But reframing my nonhumanity as something that can be broader than a specific population/s of theriform animals that can reproduce with one another has allowed me to feel more true to myself. I enjoy being able to call myself a raptor or a tubenose, crocodile or shark while not limiting myself with something that doesn’t exactly apply anyways.

#2826 - Hydrurga leptonyx - Leopard Seal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Specifically Autahi the Leopard Seal, named after the star that appears in the pre-dawn sky during the Māori New Year. Her remains were found on a beach near Dunedin, and following a blessing by representatives from Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka Ki Puketeraki she was collected by the Department of Conservation for study and preservation.
Unfortunately it doesn't appear her death was an easy one - when she died, she had a spine from a Chimerid fish stuck through her face between cheek and gum, was suffering from an infection in her teeth and gums, and some of her large canine teeth were cracked or missing. Pneumonia, probaby exacerbated by her injuries and starvation, finished her off.
So also had a number of scars, and signs of fractures on the bones beneath - poor girl had certainly been in the wars.
But the taxidermy and skeletal articulation are lovely work - the bones were a 930 hour job by sculptor Julie Streat.
youtube
The binomial means  "thin-clawed water worker".
Leopard seals are the second-largest seal in Antarctic waters, and one of the top predators in the region. Mothers with young pups and the occasional vagrant come further north, and may be found on Australian, South American, South African and New Zealand beachs. They can reach 3.5m in length, and up to 600kg in weight.
They're most notorious for eating penguins, but the diet includes squid, birds, fish, other seals, and krill they catch with molars that lock together into a sieve like that used by crabeater seals. Attacks on humans are rare but not unheard-of. And tragically, in 2003 British biologist Kirsty Brown of the British Antarctic Survey was killed by a leopard seal while conducting research snorkeling in Antarctica. On the other hand, Nat.Geo. photographer Paul Nicklen captured pictures of a leopard seal bringing him live, injured, and then dead penguins, possibly in an attempt to teach him how to hunt.
Otago Museum, Dunedin, Aotearoa New Zealand.
