Strap in boys, this is a long one.

So I was looking back through the pages of the manga and I noticed something very interesting about Hyuse. It's a really subtle thing but it's been blowing my mind all the way to Saturn and back.

I had to split this post up because of the Tumblr picture limit so if you want the full version you can find it here.

When we first meet Hyuse, he's in the Aftokrator Away Ship, dressed in Aftokrator's military uniform, surrounded by fellow soldiers. And he looks like this:

Look at his hair. It's neat and tidy, slicked back to be smooth and out of the way. It's very round and flat and well-behaved, almost like it's been polished.

Soon after this, Hyuse is instructed to go out and fight Tamakoma-1. So he does. He goes with Viza and he fights Tamakoma-1.

But Tamakoma-1 isn't easy to beat. In fact, they're quite hard to beat, and Hyuse is encountering some difficulties. Their techniques and weapons are new, unusual and unknown to him - he's being exposed to how Meeden works for the first time. And his hair... scruffs just a little bit.

Just a little bit messier, not a lot to really matter. Could be just the effect of an intense fight.

Then he meets Jin.

And then he fights Jin. And after fighting Jin and learning that his fellow Aftokratans have left, he looks like this:

Those back spikes weren't like that before, were they? No, after having fought with Jin and being told he's been abandoned by his comrades, Hyuse's hair is definitely scruffier. (Also, doesn't that crack look weirdly like he's... crying? Food for thought.)

So Aftokrator loses and Hyuse is taken prisoner, and when we next see him, it's here:

Posture slouched, hands in his pockets, hood over his head. A very clear anti-social stance. He doesn't want to be here, he doesn't want to talk to these people, he's pretty much doing this against his will. So he's reluctant, and he's hiding.

This is a common thing with Hyuse. It's how Ashihara communicates the distance between Hyuse and other characters to the audience; if he doesn't want to be there, he puts the hood up and he hides. And it's kinda interesting that the behaviour that is associated with Hyuse hiding is also the behaviour where he covers his hair.

His hair, which went from almost-uniform neatness in Aftokrator's ship to a ruffled mess after being on Meeden.

Do you see where this is heading? Let me keep going.

After the Aftokrator invasion, Hyuse spends some time among Tamakoma Branch as per Border's way of keeping him prisoner. He barely talks to any of the people there, but that doesn't mean he doesn't interact with them. He's still in the same space as them, sharing the same environment, so he continues to gain exposure to Meeden and its people, and he bonds particularly with Yōtarō.

Following this, the next major event in the story is the Galopoula invasion. Towards the end Hyuse meets with one of the Galopoula soldiers (Reghindetz) and demands to be taken with them so he can return to Aftokrator.

Hyuse fakes stabbing Yōtarō in order to convince Reghindetz of taking him with them, but Reghindetz flips out a completely grills him.

Chapter 135 is the first ever chapter to be titled with Hyuse's name; it's incredibly important to his character, and this panel is the centre of it. It takes up half the page it's on. Ashihara wanted to make it very clear to the audience that this moment for Hyuse is absolutely critical - and it is, because this is a major turning point in Hyuse's character growth. He's just had the blatant truth of what it means to be left behind by Aftokrator thrown right in his face.

And you wanna know what Ashihara chose to highlight in such an incredibly crucial moment for Hyuse's character?

His fucking hair.

His messy, fluffy, scruffy hair that looks absolutely nothing like it did when he first arrived in the Aftokrator ship. His hair, which has gone from neat and orderly and controlled to wild and free just from being on Meeden.

But the absolute wildest part? Hyuse looks like a teenager now. The more his hair fluffs up and gets scruffy, the more Hyuse looks like a normal everyday teenager who just grew up on Meeden/Earth. It's insane. It's surreal. It's absolutely off-the-walls batshit bonkers and Ashihara is a bloody genius.

It doesn't stop there either, because the very next thing that happens is the first time the audience gets to see Hyuse put on Lambyris. And lo and behold...

Hyuse, using Lambyris and wearing Aftokrator's military uniform, has scruffy hair.

Ashihara could've just made it so that Lambyris automatically gives Hyuse neatened hair, and excused the previous scruffiness with "he was in a fight". But he didn't. Instead he chose to show us Hyuse putting on Lambyris while looking like a normal teenager, and have his trion body load in with god damn scruffy hair.

What happens afterwards? Well...

Hyuse hides again.

Notice how he took the hood off when facing Reghindetz? He was confident then, self-assured. He had a plan and he was gonna act on it. Now, that's all been crushed. He's back to square one and worse, he's been confronted with the fact that he's been abandoned.

There's a distinct pattern to Hyuse's hiding. Whenever he's faced with something that shakes his world view and/or hurts his pride, he puts his hood up. He creates a second shield for himself and he uses it to cover up his key defining features. This isn't just anti-social behaviour, it's a defence mechanism.

The Aftokrator invasion? No hood, but the moment he's taken prisoner of war it's there. Aftokrator lost and then left Hyuse behind, and he's hiding how he's hurt by that. On top of that, he's being manhandled by Border.

Confronting Reghindetz? No hood, he didn't feel like he needed it. Post-Galopoula invasion? Hood up, head down, won't sit near anyone but Yōtarō. He's having to rearrange his whole perception of himself, Aftokrator and Meeden and it sucks.

And thirdly, confronting the Border Executives. In order for Hyuse to get back to Aftokrator, he needs to join Tamakoma-2 as their second ace, and help them get onto the Away Mission team. To do that, however, he needs approval from the heads of Border - which means he needs Osamu to plead his case.

Notice how, by having him sat down, Ashihara made Hyuse shorter than Yūma in this panel? How Hyuse, who's normally the tallest out of Tamakoma-2, is depicted as smaller than their smallest member? And even more than that, how Osamu is now the tallest?

Where Hyuse is normally the guide, the advisor, the more experienced one that the others turn to, in this situation he is the one reliant on them.

And look, he's regressed. He's gone back to that flat-eyed stare he had when we first saw him in the hoodie, sat in the back of the car.

He's been placed into a situation where he is basically powerless and completely dependent on others to survive, and in response all of his defence mechanisms have gone back up. He refuses to emote properly and only talks when he feels it's absolutely necessary, and the hood stays firmly on - hiding not only his hair but his horns as well, the key defining feature of his Neighbour heritage.

But Mikumo succeeds in getting Hyuse approved for Tamakoma-2. And Hyuse, incidentally, goes back to being depicted as the tallest of the four of them.

From this angle, it also appears that he's no longer slouching. His confidence is slowly coming back.

So at long last, in Chapter 150/151, Hyuse joins Border. He rocks up at the induction ceremony in a customised C-Rank uniform, hair fully exposed and scruffy as ever.

Nothing special, just something blue and hopefully soothing to look at. I hope your week is treating you well and that you have a chance to bask in the sunspots.

For those that have asked for materials used, I am so sorry I didn't include that so much before. I started this blog to track my progress, get better at posting things (without feeling like I wanted to vomit), and hopefully provide something to make people smile. It honestly didn't occur to me anyone would care. 😶I have NO idea if I can add that to older posts, but I'll check with my trusty tumblr experts (my kids).

Otherwise, I use mostly Winsor and Newton Pro Watercolors, with a couple of Daniel Smith colors thrown in due to price mostly (Sap greens, Phthalo Blue, and Sepia). I use Arches or Baohong(Meeden) Paper, and my brushes I use most are the Aqua Elite from Princeton (Mostly because I save my WN Series 7 brushes I got for my birthday for commissions), and also I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 000 round from Christy Rice's collection.

Gouache is also Winsor and Newton Pro and I use their Student brushes (the bright blue ones) - these are actually the BEST starter brushes I have encountered. I wish I had found these when I first started. otherwise I use my older SNAP brushes from Princeton, sine you need a bit hardier a brush to stand up to the gouache.

Also - a note to anyone starting out in watercolor - quality makes a HUGE difference. While I would say work with crayola if that's what you have, just get to know it's limitations compared to the continuum of paints and you'll be fine (I.e. a lot of student paint can't be mixed well to get other colors). Chances are, if you can't get it to do a thing, it's because of a material you are using. Good paper can handle a lot more water, scrubbing, layers, pigment. good brushes don't drop all their water at once, they hold better lines, and more pigment. -- All things others better than I have said before, but it's SO true it bears repeating.

Diana Rose Alejandre vanished under suspicious circumstances during the spring of 2020. The then-31-year-old woman was living in Winterhaven, California at the time of her disappearance. Diana last contacted her family members on April 29th, 2020. Various reports state that it is believed she disappeared a few days later, on May 4th. She has never been seen or heard from again. 

Diana lived with her girlfriend, Danielle 'Danny' Meeden, at the time of her disappearance. She was reportedly last seen at their home, where she left behind several personal items, including her wallet and cell phone. Diana also has five children, and it is uncharacteristic for her to be out of touch with them and her other family members. 

In June of 2020, Diana's mother began contacting relatives to see if any of them had heard from Diana. It was then realized that nobody had heard from her since April 29th. On June 30th, Diana's aunt Jenny Espino filed a missing persons report with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.

A. After double checking the data, it is indeed Azuma-san

Q. Are Ninomiya-san and Kako-san able to understand each other based on the fact both like "talented people"?

A. Ninomiya seems to focus more on talent as "a piece that form the unit" while Kako-san seems to focus on talent that "shines as an individual", so maybe they don't have much to talk about

Q. Why are there so few Shooters?

A. I think it's because the top 3 Shooters, Ninomiya, Izumi and Kako-san, in many ways set an example that's hard to follow, and because the approach of "raising and adjusting the level of performance with tools(guns)" seems more possible.

Q. Who was the fastest member to be promoted to A rank after enlistment?

A. The conditions for being promoted to A rank have changed little by little as more members join, so it's hard to say, but I think Narasaka, Utagawa and Kikuchihara were the fastest.

Midorikawa, Yuzuru, Kuroe and others were also fast.

A. Yes, but most people wouldn't recognize him as Osamu.)

A. Raijinmaru looks like a strong being, so I'm sure she's fine.

Yotaro is "Be the wind. Luksury(luxury) & Eksekutive(executive)" I think.

Q. In chapter 118, who was number 338 that Toma shot during the stealth and target acquisition training?

A. I may have already answered this, but it was either Oki or Tonooka. Tonooka would have been ranked 3rd in that training, so if he managed to escape Toma, number 338 would have been Oki.

Q. I would like to know from where each member of Suzumari-1 was scouted from.

A. Kon-chan: Chiba prefecture

Taichi: Kouchi prefecture

A. I think it's cause of his cockiness and lack of modesty towards the other party.

He also calls Yuiga, Satori, Hanzaki and Midorikawa simply by their last name, and calls Koarai "Koala".

Surprisingly, he calls Minamisawa "Kai-kun"

Q. What are the names and ages of Inukai's 2 sisters?

A. The eldest daughter: kanade (奏), 23

The second daughter: Akari (明理) 21

Q. Other than Yuma, who else has been scouted by Kako-san?

A. She greedily recruited Konami, Kage, Kitora and others. Kazama-san and Kinuta-san have also been targets. No rules.

Q. When Yoneya introduced himself, he said "Yousuke is fine", but why don't Izumi and Osamu call him by his first name?

A. Osamu probably doesn't since he feels uncomfortable calling his seniors by their first names.

Izumi probably doesn't because he doesn't want to be called by his first name either.

Q. Why does Izumi-kun call Kunichika by her first name?

A. Maybe because he wants her to call him by his.

Q. Who is the worst at cleaning in Tachikawa squad? Was Torimaru bad at cleaning too back in the old Tachikawa squad?

A. Torimaru was the only one who had tidying up skills, it's been sad since he left.

Tachikawa is the least tidy of the bunch, Kunichika only tidies up game related stuff.

Q. Old man Viza and Captain Gatlin are still fighting on the front lines despite their advanced age. In the neighborhood, is it normal for people in their 30s or 40s or older to keep fighting as long as they continue to use their Trion gland?

A. Viza is a rather rare case, but it is common for people in their 30s and 40s to still be on the front line.

Q. When Gatlin, Rata and Wen So were disguised as Idras was it thanks to Servitora(Straw soldiers)? Is Servitora a different trigger as it seems to set up somewhere else?

A. It's a trigger called "Katoptron"[kanji: headdress] that reads the shape of nearby objects or people and transforms your and your allies' Trion body into that shape.

Q. What did Yuma think of his father's Side Effect?

A. Until he inherited it, he thought it "sounds convenient"

Q. If Yuma lies, does it make him sick cause of his Side Effect?

A. I don't think so, but when he looks in the mirror, maybe he'll see smoke coming out of his own mouth?

Q. Does Miwa-kun have any friends in Border outside Miwa squad? Does he talk to Nire-san and Miura-kun who are in his class?

A. He probably doesn't think they are close, but he does talk to Hikari and Muller at school.

At HQ he talks with Saeki, Satomi, Momozono, Ouji, Kashio and Kotaro quite often.

Q. At the end of vol 20 you mentioned Arashiyama "forces Jin to go on dog walks with him", you mean by going over to Tamakoma and picking him up?

A. Yes, if Jin doesn't show up at the meeting place he does that, but most of the time, Jin does show up by himself.

3. What was their first impression of each other?

I think Azuma could tell from the start that Ranbanein was a formidable foe, but had to revise his initial assessment a little because he'd taken Ranbanein for more of a "shoot first ask questions later" type, but was surprised by how much thought Ranbanein had put into his attack. By the end of the fight I think he'd have a certain respect for him as an opponent, though he was so focused on protecting and guiding the other B-ranks through that battle that I think Ranbanein lingered in his mind less than the other way around.

Ranbanein didn't initially realize that the unseen Meeden commander whose tactics caused so much trouble for him was the same person as the sniper who was there when he first warped over. He would've been very curious, though, intrigued by the commander who'd had such loyal soldiers and had directed them so effectively. I don't think he particularly looked at Azuma when they first met face to face, but I like to think he put the pieces together later and realized Azuma must have been the Meeden commander, looking at footage of the battle... and that's when he finds himself captivated by Azuma's appearance, too. :3

24. How do their personalities affect their relationship? Do their characteristics compliment each other, or clash often?

I think their personalities balance each other out really well. Ranbanein's a lot more extraverted and high-energy than Azuma, but they're both really warm and genuine people who care about others and I think they'd have similar priorities in life. They're both people who take joy in the simple things, I think? Good food, physical activity, spending time with loved ones. I think they'd like learning about each other's cultures and hobbies. Ranbanein in particular seems like he'd really take to Azuma's love of the outdoors, I could see the two of them taking long camping/fishing trips together and really enjoying themselves.

Plus, Azuma in my headcanons is someone with a rather fraught relationship history, slow to open up or reveal much of his inner life. I think being with someone as honest and straightforward as Ranbanein would be good for him - he'd never have to question how much Ranbanein cares for him, because Ranbanein would be cheerfully telling him (and everyone else he knows) all the time.

26. What sacrifices do they make for the other?

I think the specifics would depend on the AU/scenario for them, but in any case there's no way they would be able to make it work without significant sacrifice, coming from different worlds. At best, one of them would have to leave behind their home and family for their partner, even if only temporarily. It's hard to imagine Azuma ever willingly leaving Border, but parting from Aftokrator and his brother would be really hard for Ranbanein too. I see them as kind of the inverse of Haiizu in that regard - Hyrein and Azuma have deep roots and responsibilities tying them to their respective homelands, but Izumi and Ranbanein could choose to leave to be with their lover in Aftokrator/Earth, even though both of them would still be leaving a lot behind.

40. Do they have any regrets in their relationship?

Again depends on the AU, since I can see a number of potential outcomes for them... I think in any scenario that started with Azuma being captured by Afto, even if it ended well for them, Ranbanein would regret taking him in the first place - even if what he did was perfectly acceptable by Afto standards, he sees firsthand how much pain it causes Azuma, and knowing he's the one responsible for that pain would leave him with a lot of guilt.

World trigger xover idea

I would like to see a crossover between my hero academia and world trigger.

Tamakoma 1 plus Jin I think would work best narratively

They are a bit older than class 1-A so they would be able to act as mentors

Jin’s side affect would definitely be treated like a quirk

Konami I can see as being a healthy rival to Bakugo considering her interactions with Yuma

Reiji would a good influence on Izuku and would probably have similar interactions with him as he did Chika (think round 2 or 3 ranks wars discussion at the restaurant about Reiji’s father)

Kyosuke would be good at bringing the class’s overall fighting ability up

2) Trion and quirks

When intially appearing tamakoma 1 would appear to either have slightly varying quirks, multiple quirks, or be viewed as having lots of support gear.

The police would most likely mistake them for vigilantes or a small hero agency with students doing a work study

3) Motivations and upsets

Jin is known for pulling strings to get the best possible future. While on its own this is not a bad thing it could cause the heroes to mistrust him.

Tamakoma 1 would probably want to return to Meeden as soon as possible

4) fun things

If they show up At overhaul’s base they could probably help Eri escape without anyone dying

Sir Nighteye’s quirk might have a weird reaction to Jin because Jin can also see the future

Kyosuke would probably give detective Naomasa a headache

He would also get some amusement out of Aizawa’s ruses
