Podcast Recommendations:

I just spent nearly 2 hours writing these for a work Teams thread #justpandemicthings. So uh, here you go. If you’re following this blog (why tho?) you might like my vibe, so you might like some of these! Finding categories is hard, so I've mostly lumped podcasts together in small groups by loose connections, or vibes. This is also how I sort my bookshelf after admitting defeat on having a perfectly coherent system. Past me would have been horrified, but I think that's what growth looks like. Some descriptions are all mine, some are copied from the creators. Feel free to read into which ones I copied and which I wrote myself as much as you want.

Fiction:

36 Questions A 3 part musical podcast about a couple on the brink of divorce. The title references the "36 Questions to Fall in Love" (/build intimacy) that can be found here: https://bigthink.com/ideafeed/how-to-fall-in-love-36-questions-and-deep-eye-contact

Alice Isn't Dead Audio diaries of a long road trucker searching for her wife who she thought had died, but Alice Isn't Dead. Really cool sound design and writing from the team behind Welcome to Nightvale. Slight absurdist/ more than slight horror vibes. There's 3 seasons in total that tell a meandering overall story roadtrip. Best listened to while parked in an empty carpark on the edge of town with rain running down the windshield and creating flickering shadows from the streetlights. It took me a few attempts to listen right through the first episode, but I eventually fell in love with the sound/feel/vibe of the podcast. The Magnus Archives A horror fiction podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organisation dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Each episode is presented in the form of a witness statement being read by the newly appointed Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute - London. Over time the stand-alone statements start to form connections, and then an overarching plot. I don't normally enjoy horror, The Magnus Archives is absolutely the exception. Really well told stories with incredible soundscaping. Maybe don't listen right before bed...

Kiwi Podcasts about Sexuality and Gender:

Micro Wave Feminism Micro Wave Feminism is a place for open, inclusive, loving and vulnerable feminist chats. It's all about talking to real people about real sh*t and experiences of femininity and masculinity in this crazy (beautiful) world we live in. Really interesting discussions on feminism through the personal experiences of kiwis. Sporadic episodes as a non-professional labour of love, but boy does it have cozy vibes.

BANG! RNZ's BANG! explores sex, sexuality and relationships over a lifetime, from parents attempting "the talk" with their children, through the fraught teen years, modern dating, long-term relationships, contraception and conception, right up to intimacy in retirement homes. So many people talking about their experiences with all aspects of sex, sexuality, relationships and gender. Let's Get Sexual Let’s Get Sexual is a podcast dedicated to exploring sexuality. It is part of the growing global movement to normalize conversations around sexuality, to embrace its complexity, and highlight how we all have our own sexual journeys. Similar vibes to BANG! But with a more personal approach and more time with each guest. Really interesting conversations with people from all walks of life.

Kiwi Current and Not So Current Events:

Gone by Lunchtime The Spinoff's politics podcast. A good balance of views from the 3 hosts, and the only politics podcast that has made me laugh out loud multiple times.

The Citizen's Handbook Robbie Niccol (White Man Behind a Desk/that guy that I went to school with) partners with RNZ for a video series all about the history of Aotearoa, and the things all citizens need to know about where we are now. There's also a podcast that goes with it, that's a game show? Really the video series is the more important part... But the podcast is a great listen.

Isolation:

The Habitat The true story of six volunteers picked to live on a fake planet. You know those stories that occasionally pop up about people living in isolation with each other to see what happens so we know about the problems and can prepare for space travel? Well this 7 episode podcast follows a group of 6 imitation NASA astronauts stuck with only each other for a year. Something I'm sure the rest of us will never have to experience right?

Our Plague Year Essays and listener messages about Our Plague 'Year'. Some really talented writers pouring emotions out. This was one of my favourite podcasts last year, though some of the episodes hit a little hard. My personal favourite episode (so far) is Trust Ends at the Windshield, featuring Hank Green, Meg Bashwiner, and Erin McKeown. Which talks about the the-show-must-go-on mentality, includes this gem: "We are killing people because we are bored. We are killing people because we are entrenched in a toxic, capitalist society that values money over life.", and was one of the triggers for me writing a 12 minute, spoken word, poetry adjacent, thing, last year.

Doing Stuff:

Cortex CGP Grey (educational youtuber) and Myke Hurley (host of about 50 podcasts) talk about productivity, and how they run their businesses, and education, and the Apple ecosystem, and a whole bunch of other things. Long episodes, and occasionally dated by reference to current events. Definitely not a super condensed productivity podcast, more of a personality / sitting in on a conversation vibe.

Start With This Art is hard, starting is hard, if you want to start somewhere you should start with this. The co-creators of Welcome to Nightvale talk about making things/the artistic process. Every episode ends with 2 assignments, one thing to consume, and one to create.

Building Positive Culture:

Dare To Lead Brené Brown talking with other people about Leadership. Really interesting and inspiring conversations. Top recommendation is the episode with Simon Sinek.

A Bit of Optimism Simon Sinek talking with other people about working together to make a better world. Really interesting and inspiring conversations. Top recommendation is the episode with Brené Brown.

TED Worklife Organizational psychologist Adam Grant takes you inside the minds of some of the world’s most unusual professionals to explore the science of making work not suck. From learning how to love criticism to harnessing the power of frustration, one thing’s for sure: You’ll never see your job the same way again. Pretty new on my feed, but every episode I've listened to so far has been an absolute hit!

Interesting Stories/People:

TED Radio Hour TED talks, collated into similar subjects with extra stuff pulled out interview style. Good to search through the archives to find areas you're interested in, or just pick a random episode and dive in!

99% Invisible - 10,000 Years [person from work who I’m too lazy to edit out a reference to] has already recommended the podcast, but I want to throw in my favourite episode. It's about the challenge of trying to mark nuclear waste sites in a way that will last 10,000 years (for reference 10,000 years ago stone tools were a pretty neat invention) and is absolutely fascinating. https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/ten-thousand-years/

With her cousin Louis's help, she was actually able to tame a baby raccoon and named him Meeko after the raccoon in Pochahantas to help her and also trained him to help her nick a few things from her cousins sometimes

Loves classic fantasy lit, especially Narnia. Tried to charm a wardrobe to take her to Narnia, and let's just say that it didn't turn out very well and that it was really hard to reverse

Shaves her head in fourth year, because she was tired of all the work it took to take care of her hair

Penelope "Penny" Elodie Weasley-Wood

Named after Penelope Clearwater, who was her father's best friend and who died in the Battle of Hogwarts

She was adopted from Ukraine and loves everything about the country. The language, the music, the art, the people...

Went on to be a dragon tamer at a Ukranian dragon reserve, which she applied to as soon as she turned 17, and when she got an offer, she took her N.E.W.T.s in her 6th year so that she could take the job immediately

At the dragon reserve, she met Norma Hawryluk, who she fell in love with and a baby Ironbelly whom she named Vera and raised. No one but she had Norma could touch Vera though, because of the dragons' extreme rage issues

Constantly stole her sibling's and cousin's clothing

Gets stuck in her head sometimes

Romulus "Rome" Wolff Jordan

They move to a farm where Genny gets her own horses!!!

Elias "Simon" Jacques Weasley

Has fibromyalgia, which makes it difficult for him to stay in Hogwarts. With the chronic joint pain, fatigue, dizziness, and difficulty with memory, it was easier for him to get privately tutored by his dad, who was the Ancient Runes professor

Severe anxiety and depression, which was most likely caused by his fibromyalgia, but there's no telling

Vegetarian for personal reasons, and had James teach him how to make vegetarian burgers and other vegetarian meals

Loves water-based magic and might have gone into the exchange program for underwater schools in the Bermudas or Oceania, but he didn't want to risk his condition

Can beat anyone at any board game. No one knows how he does it. Ron played wizard chess with him for eight hours once, but eventually gave up on ever beating him

Is the publisher of a Hogwarts exclusive magazine. Uses his older sister’s computers to work on it. Works on his novel in his spare time. Occasionally holds poetry slams by the Great Lake. Just loves writing in general

Matilda "Tilly" Honey Granger-Weasley

Has a photographic/eidetic memory

Got expelled from Hogwarts in her sixth year for using an unforgivable curse on another student who was bullying/harassing Elias, but doesn't regret it all.

Finishes up her studies at a small non-boarding wizarding school in Romania, where she lives with her Uncle Charlie and his queerplatonic partner, Barnaby, and their cat, Wick

With the help of Barnaby, dyes her hair platinum white (think Zoe Kravitz when she had white hair)

Moves to America almost as soon as she graduates

Travels the world to write about different wizarding communities for the Quibbler and for her sister's museum

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced

The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.

Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.

I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!

One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."

I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU.  I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games.  I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas.  (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it.  As in, our twelfth-grade US History class, I shit you not, covered Gone With the Wind.)  There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.

these first time survival show fans up in arms about shanbin actually using his rightful benefit of being able to push out whoever he wants for any position he wants are soft and would not survive a harsh winter. like be serious did they think that mr. forever p01 who’s been scratching and clawing and working for YEARS to make his way into the (deserved) spotlight for years is going to sit back and take subvocal 6? shanbin is really gracious and kind to the others AND he’s got a spine of steel and won’t hesitate to take the parts that he wants. both can be true! also this year there is a bigger benefit for the top spot than ever before like in previous seasons you just got to be the nominal center but this time you get a solo song. and that boy wants it. why should he ease up on the gas now when he’s so close to the finish? no ofc he should go in for the kill. shanbin i LOVE u.

The Pathfinder Crew

@anxiouspineapples has officially ruined me in the best way. I’m rereading the PJO and HoO series, and I’m currently waist deep in Mass Effect: Andromeda and loving every minute of it. So many emotions and feelings are being brought up by both series. Here’s hoping to add my little two cents to the ME:A AU for PJO that Meg is crafting with @suchastart. They’re both amazing, check out their blogs if you get a chance! :D Anyway, here’s a short little story, the rest under the cut! Enjoy!

Percy was honestly a little surprised by how easily his crew had fallen into place. He had never expected to end up becoming pathfinder, but life didn't seem to care what he planned. It seemed even escaping the milky way galaxy wasn't enough for trouble to stop finding him. Setting down his cup of coffee, he looked out the large window, watching stars float by. It was hard to think it had been over 600 years since he had last been on earth. It felt like just months. But, his old home was gone.

Now here he was. Stuck on a new ship, with a title he never asked for, and a crew he never expected. Thousands of people looked to him to lead them. Him. The boy that got kicked out of six schools in six years. Now he was responsible about calling the shots that could make or break the very chance of survival in this new harsh galaxy.

Now normally Percy could brush off most things, keep going with a witty joke and a smile. But, to say he was scared as hell would be the understatement of the century. He was in way over his head. Dropping his head to the table, he let out a long drawn out sigh. He was screwed, but he couldn't back down. Too many people were relying on him, he had SAM, and he had already established a settlement. Backing out now would only sow chaos and cause the already dangerous situation to deteriorate even more. Whether he wanted to or not, he was stuck with the job.

Gently he drummed his fingers on the cold metal table, his head still pressed against it. At least... at least he knew he wasn't alone. He had a hell of a crew, that was for sure.

Piper was their resident negotiator. That Asari had a way with words, and had even earned her the nickname “charm speaker.” She could convince anyone to do anything with enough time. Now, often times Percy had to take the lead and act up as Pathfinder, ensuring first contact went smoothly. But when it came down to negotiations, Piper took the lead. She could keep tensions low, smooth out situations, or just find them the supplies they happened to need, for a reasonable price. She also had a habit of convincing others to do her work around the ship for her, without them ever knowing. Especially poor Jason.

Not that Percy thought Jason minded. The Turian was close to Piper. Perhaps even romantically, but Percy was never the best at that kind of stuff. He just knew they worked well together, and when in doubt they were safe to pair up on missions. Jason was perhaps one of the most reliable crew members he had. Level headed, determined, and honest to a fault, Percy had mad respect for him. Unfortunately, he also had a habit of butting heads with him. Both of them were a little... strong willed, and when they disagreed, or they got competitive, it usually took Piper and Annabeth to calm them down before it escalated. Don't get him wrong, Percy trusted Jason with his life and saw him as a brother, but man, that Turian could get under his skin. But he wouldn't have it any other way.

Frank was their resident Krogan. With a surprisingly calm temperament for a Krogan, Frank more than made up for it in raw combat ability. Even where Percy surpassed Frank with his SAM-enhanced body, Frank just seemed to be a bundle of potential, always moving forward. Percy also valued him as a friend as well. The usually level headed Krogan could be counted on for advice, tactical or personal. Percy knew he could send him on any job and Frank would get it done efficiently, without a word of complaint. At least, aside from the few times he had seen Frank get mad. When Frank got mad, it was borderline terrifying. Krogans were scary enough when upset, but Frank just seemed to be out to prove a point. Nothing stood in his way when he found his temper lit. But those moments were few and far between, Hazel usually intervening before it could reach that far.

Hazel was their Angaran Envoy. Having been sent with them when they first made contact, Hazel and Frank had quickly fallen in line together. Percy wasn't quite sure what it was between those two, but they clicked. Perhaps in a different way than Piper and Jason did, but clicked never the less. It just seemed natural for them to be together. Like they had been waiting their whole lives to meet, and it was almost to be expected. Hazel was powerful with her own electromagnetic charges her race naturally had. Perhaps one of the most adept that Percy had met in their brief time together. She was also one of the most level headed on the crew. Perhaps due to being older than many of them, though still young by Angaran standards, she mothered them a bit. Many of the up-keeping duties were handled by her, with Frank assisting. Percy couldn't quite put it into words why, but with her around the place felt more like a home than a military vessel in the stars.

Perhaps on the opposite end of the spectrum was Leo. Another human like himself, Leo was their mechanic. Handy-man. Demolitions expert. Basically anything that could involve fire, usually would, and Leo would be at it front and center. Percy was amazed Leo hadn't been burned with the amount of fires that started around him, he would swear up and down that he was immune to it. His personality was just as bright, always cracking a joke, and easing the tensions that came with their tense mission. Even with his chaotic plans, Leo always managed to pull through for them in the end. That didn't even touch on the constant upgrades he made to their equipment, making their life easier and easier. At least until one goes a little haywire and they end up with a coffee stain on the ceiling that they just can't find a way to remove. He was also the reason the message board no longer allowed images after he started a meme war that ended up taking too much of their focus. Despite all the chaoticness, Percy trusted Leo with his life. He was like an annoying little brother to him, one that Percy wouldn't trade for the universe.

Pushing the mug away from him, he stared at the logo on an owl printed onto the gray mug. His thoughts turned towards his last crew member. Annabeth. It was her mug after all, she had taken his a while ago so he had returned the favor and was using hers.

Annabeth was... perhaps what kept him going, if he was honest with himself. He had known her since his time at the academy. Originally they were always bickering, but slowly they had grown closer. Percy couldn't really pinpoint when they had started getting attached at the hip, but it must have happened at some point considering they were recently made “official”, as Piper put it. They realized they had too much at stake, too much could happen, to let time pass them by. Percy had worked up the courage to ask her out, and a month later he couldn't be happier.

Annabeth was the person he relied on most in the crew. Her brain was as good as SAM's in his opinion. She could form a battle plan in a heartbeat, and could read people like a book. Aside from the fact she could hold her own in a fight just fine, she could give Percy the advice he needed, or give the team a plan to ensure their victory. He couldn't even count the number of victories against the Kett Annabeth had given them with her strategies.

Originally it had been just suppressed comments about his waking order, or research goals. When someone asked him plans about settlements, it was impossible for Percy not to notice how much advice she wanted to give, yet tried to hold back on out of respect for his new title. Percy approached her one night, asking her if she would like to take charge of planning out settlements. He could still see the number of architecture and urban development books he knew lined her room. Annabeth had agreed all too eagerly, only pausing to ask if he was sure.

Now Percy kept her at his side on all his missions, not wanting to be separated from her, and trusting her judgment completely. He knew if he was going to make it through this mission with his head on his shoulders, it would be because of her. Then again, it wasn't like he could convince her to stay behind even if he wanted her too. They had been separated while exploring an ice planet. A large Kett attack party had ambushed them, and Annabeth had been knocked out cold. Desperate to save his partner, he had managed to blow up one of their cargo ships, and run off on his own to lure their attention. He knew they were after the pathfinder more than his crew and his plan had worked.

Perhaps a little too well.

Percy had found himself stranded near a dying heat lamp, the cold slowly freezing his body. He had been just about to pass out when a familiar voice reached his comms, and he saw a suit running towards in the distance. When he had woken up, it had been a few days later in the infirmary, to an upset looking Annabeth and a relieved looking Piper. It had taken him a while to hear the story of Annabeth's conquest for him once she had woken up and realized he had been missing for three days before they found him.

Shaking his head from the thoughts he let out another sigh. Maybe Annabeth should be pathfinder after all. Surely the universe would be better in her brilliant hands.

At the sounds of his door opening, he tensed. His back muscles shifted, as if to lift him up, but his will power failed him and he let his head remain on the cold metal. “Yes?” He asked, really not in the mood to talk to anyone but knew duty was probably calling, like always.

Whoever had entered made no noise, but he heard a soft sigh. A few footsteps. Then a plate being placed on the table next to his head. A familiar hand wound it's way through his hair, gently massaging his scalp as shivers shot down his spine.

“Hey.” Annabeth's voice was gentle, a far cry from it's usual teasing, playful tone.

“Hi.” He mumbled, rolling his head so he can look up at her.

Annabeth wore a soft, amused smile as she continued to play with his hair. “Are you okay?” She asked patiently.

Percy paused, looking her deep in her stormy gray eyes. “I am now.” He mumbled, a unable to suppress the small smile that crept on his face.

Annabeth just laughed. “Here, I brought you cookies, now talk.” She said, sliding the plate towards him.

Sitting up finally, Percy was surprised to see a plate of blue cookies, with blue frosting. He felt a warmth in his chest as he looked at them appreciatively, before looking back at Annabeth. Leaning forward, he quickly gave her a chaste kiss before grabbing a cookie and digging in. “How did you know?” He asked between bites.

Annabeth just shrugged. “Cause I know you. I had a feeling you could use these today.” It was true, Annabeth wasn't quite sure how she knew. Just after all the time she had spent with her seaweed brain, she had a sixth sense for something being wrong with him. She was glad she had stocked up on supplies during their last trip to the Nexus. Being in a new galaxy meant getting a bit creative with recipes, but with enough research she had managed to find a reliable way to make cookies, and perhaps more importantly, blue food dye. “So what's wrong?” She asked again, gently pressing the issue.  

Percy sighed, finishing up his cookie. He looked at Annabeth, determined to brush the issue off. However, her concerned gaze pierced through his walls as his shoulders sagged.

“I just... do... do you think I'm okay being the pathfinder? I should just let you do it...”

His head dropped as he stared down at the table. “I know you wanted the job before I ended up with it...”

His fist clenched on the table. “There's so much at stake and I...” Percy paused as he felt a hand cover his, slowly smoothing out his fist and unclenching it. She took it in her own, entwining their fingers gently. “Look at me.” Her words were soft, but firm.

Glancing up, Percy saw her staring back at him with fierce eyes. They almost looked... angry. But he could tell concern was hidden in them as well.

“You can't say that Percy. Everyone is looking to you, because they trust you.”

“That's the problem! It's not me they should trust. Piper's the one who can keep the peace, Frank is the one smashing the machines. Jason could probably do the job better than I can, I just have it because I'm human. You're the smart one. I would be dead in a snow-pile without you. I shouldn't be leading you. I-”

He was cut off as he felt her hand cover his mouth, her gaze hardening. “Don't say that!” She snapped.

Annabeth felt a lump of frustration building up in her. How. How could he be saying all of that.

Annabeth was aware of the pressure that came with the title of Pathfinder. She was always afraid of the pressure getting to him, and was determined to do what she could to buffer it. She made an effort to filter many of the angry Nexus messages to the ship, and ran interference with the frustrated people of the Nexus who couldn't see that Percy was trying to carry the whole initiative on his shoulders. But the job was still his, and she would never get in the way of that. In fact there was no one, including herself, who she trusted more to fill the shoes of Pathfinder.

“Percy, you've done more for this universe than I could have imagined. You introduced a brand new race into the Nexus. You've settled planets, letting life begin on these otherwise lifeless rocks. You've pulled our crew together, and you lead us day in and day out.” She explained, feeling the words bubbling out of her. Annoyingly, she felt tears beginning to build up in the corner of her eyes despite herself. “You almost threw your life away to save mine on that God forsaken ice planet.” She managed to keep her voice steady, despite it's almost need to shake.

Annabeth's mind flashed back to that night she had woken up in the infirmary. She had remembered seeing the wave of attackers coming in, and she had ducked behind cover. What she had failed to notice in all the snow though, had been the grenade that had landed on the other side of the crates. When it blew it had sent them flying, clubbing her in the back of the head and knocking her out cold. When she had woken up she had found out she had also been shot during the scuffle, though the wound was minor. When she had looked for Percy, determined to make sure he wasn't guilt tripping himself over her injury, her heart had stopped when she had found out he wasn't there. He wasn't anywhere.

Piper had physically restrained her to keep her from running out into the snow in her casual clothes.

The second in command, Annabeth had brought the full force of the weight of the pathfinder's name in finding Percy. They had called in reinforcements for their search party, and Annabeth had went for two nights without sleeping as she scoured the snow for him.

When they had finally found him, half frozen to death, she hadn't left his side until he was up on his feet.

Shaking her head to clear her thoughts of that horrific day, she looked at Percy. “We choose to follow you Percy, because of who you are.” He might not see it himself, but she saw him for what he truly was.

Their pathfinder was their hero. Kind, and empathetic to a fault, he had a way of bringing everyone together. Piper may be more skilled in the actual art of negotiations and speaking, but Percy's air around him drew people towards him. His bravery and courage kept her heart fluttering whenever she saw him taking charge on a mission, his usual goofy demeanor being replaced by a serious, surprisingly mature, leadership. Whenever she formed a plan that made her pause, always being afraid of the risks and unwilling to endanger any of her friends as may be needed, Percy always immediately took the job and plunged forward without hesitation. He'd take on the dangerous job as if it was natural, seemingly glad to do so as his friends wouldn't be in danger. This spoke nothing of his actual strength. She knew SAM was helping him out in that regard, but his skill on the combat field let her devise more strategies with such a powerful tool in her arsenal.

She wasn't quite sure which smirk, goofy smile, or carefree laugh had won her heart over, but she knew it hadn't taken too long to warm her heart again.

Getting up, she moved over, sitting on his lap and draping her arms around his shoulders, lacing her hands behind his neck. “Percy. You're doing a wonderful job. You've guided us farther than I allowed myself to hope for. Besides, you're not alone. We're here for you. I'm here for you.”

Percy couldn't hope to fight the grin that crept all over his face. “I wouldn't have it any other way.”

He paused, his head drooping slightly. “Thank you. Seriously. I... I need you by my side, Wise Girl.”

Annabeth just leaned forward, nudging his head up with hers before she kissed him. After a moment she rested her forehead against his. “I need you too, Seaweed Brain. Never forget that.”

Shifting off his lap, Annabeth reached for a cookie and sat munched it happily, sitting next to him and staring out into space.

Resting his head on her shoulder, Percy ate another cookie himself. He still had doubts about being pathfinder, but he trusted his crew. He knew that with all of them by his side, he would find a way to get it all done. He that with Annabeth at his side, he could make Andromeda his home. Looking over at her, seeing her lit up by the soft lights from space, he felt a warmth in his chest. That was wrong. He knew that with Annabeth at his side, he was home.

two of my favorites moments of this year, going to comic con and getting to meet Colin with my cousin @dashing-rapscallions (who is the greatest person) and meeting some of my favorite authors and then going to HVFF again, having David remember me, meeting some amazing people, getting to spend time with my mom AND BEING IN A OLICITY SANDWITCH.

I am so so glad to call you my friend and to have you by my side. 

@blyedeeks SOUL TWIN!!! can you believe that we only met 2 years ago? it feels like we’ve known each other our entire lives. Sometimes you meet someone who can understand you in ways that don’t seem real because they get you on such a deep level. I think I said something like that last year but it’s still so true. And you are the kindest more brilliant star in sky Cams. I truly don’t know where I’d be without you, definitely not as confident or as loud. I love you a lot and I am so blessed to have your kindness and positivity on my side.

Oh, and she is determined and dedicated and passionate and she just believes so strongly in the goodness of a single person, in her own value that I can’t help but believe in myself more because of her strength and courage and beauty.

The End of an Era

I will start off by saying this is going to be a very long blog post #sorrynotsorry. Today is the final day of #Sourcefed, #Sourcefednerd and various other shows on the channels. I am so sad to see it go. I subscribed within the first week and have been watching ever since. You go through fazes over the years and sourcefed was a pretty strong force in my life for many years. They made me laugh, they made me cry, and most important they gave me people to look up to and admire when i was younger. Being almost 25 now i’ve grown with a lot of the hosts over the years and i don’t regret a single moment of it.

Now to write about how each host changed my life and some of my favorite memories. To this day and continuing on i will watch and re-watch all of my favorite episodes forever. (That’s the great thing about the internet)

Joe Bereta: When you started (and kinda throughout) you were labeled the jock of the group because of how athletic you are (which is mind blowing) but you were always so much more then that to me at least. I originally saw you on Barets and Beretta and since then i was smitten. You are incredibly funny and charming, and oh so handsome *wink*. You have this amazing gift to make people laugh and a work ethic i hope to one day achieve. When you left originally i was very sad. I still to this day miss seeing your face on my computer screen filling my days with joy. Some of my favorite memories are your many stories on the horrific ways you should have died (The canada story is my favorite) and the amazing relationship you had with all the hosts (especially the holy trinity of you Elliott and Lee) I love the work you are doing now and I know so much greatness will come to you. 

Elliott Morgan: You have an amazing gift that no one else can match, your comitic timing is amazing, you are incredibly smart and witty and you are so damn perfect it makes my head hurt. I cried so hard during your last episode of comcom because i was so genuinely sad to see you go. However i still love your personal channel and I love the podcast with Lee (Oh and cant forget the excitement i had seeing you both on lipsync battles) I just wanted you to know how incredible you truly are. You may think that when you started everyone hated you but i loved you. (p.s. i’m single...your single. hit me up lol kidding) I am so excited to continue to watch your journey through life cause i know you are going to do such amazing and creative things. One of my all time favorite moments on sourcefed of you was the BooBee’s joke (don’t know why but it still makes me laugh) or your story with the detergent. both amazing and weird moments but perfect none the less.

Lee Newton: You are one of my biggest inspirations in life, you prove to the world that you are here to take change. There was not a lot of girls that looked like me when i was younger and then you came around and blew me away. Your beautiful you are so incredibly funny (and you influenced my jokes and proved that women can be just as funny or funnier then the men) When you left a small part of my heart went with you. But i know that it was the best move for you and now you can concour the world and take names while you do it. I just want to thank you so much for everything you have brought to my life and helping mold me into the person that i am today. I love you Lee. And good luck with the wedding (I loved the invitations). My favorite sourcefed moment with you would honestly be any truth or dare and i love your mad hatter and wrestler characters.

Steve Zaragoza: You are so wacky and crazy and just such a joy on the world. The knowledge and enthusiasm for all things nerd (especially the movies) is amazing. You bring just a joy and light to this world and i am really going to miss all of your dick and fart jokes. I know i will see you on other things but not seeing you in that building is going to be so hard. but i know that you are just going to take the world by storm weather the world wants it or not. My classic steve memory will always have to be “what is that a coffee machine” I know its not original but it is classic. Or of course Ben Franklin Time Traveler.

Trisha Hershburger: You are gorgeous and amazing and had a baby like 2 seconds ago and look like when you first started on sourcefed (which is incredible to me) You proved it was okay to be a nerd and a geek as a woman and i thank you for that. You brought a structure in the beginning which i think is super important especially at the beginning where you were all just trying to figure things out. I have loved seeing you thrive outside of sourcefed (as hard as it was to see you go) and see you meeting your dreams you always wanted to concur. Your little boy is amazingly cute (but who wouldn't have guessed that that was going to happen) and i’m just excited to see where life takes you. My favorite Trish moments were when you were on table talk and my favorite saying has to be the “no no” I use that on the daily and have for years now because of you.

Meg Turney: You are such a firecracker that brought so much love and knowledge to sourcefed. You introduced me to tons of anime i may not have ever seen before and gave light to the amazing-ness of cosplay and knowing that its okay to be your weird self. After seeing you i dyed my hair red and wanted nothing more then to be like you. When you left it was a different feeling for me then the others leaving simply because i knew you were going to Rooster Teeth and i would get to see you again and somehow being even more awesome as if that was possiable. My favorite memory involves you and Joe at the very end of a table talk when you and Gav were still in the early days Joe informed you on how #turnfree was not your ship name but that is #Gaeg or #Gag however he wished to spell it im not sure, however it made me laugh so hard and now i cant refer to y’alls relationship as #turnfree. And even though you left Rooster Teeth as well (which i a whole other blog post) I still will continue to follow and love you and perv out on your modeling pictures.

Ross Everett: You got shit on so much when you worked for sourcefed but i think that was so unfair of people to do to you cause you are very funny and creative. You brought a very different energy to the group that i think was needed and you are amazing. My favorite memory is the joke of you dating trisha’s baby and it made me smile so hard in the last table talk to see you finally see her baby. I also loved your periscopes.

Sam Bashor: You are the cutest little dork in the entire world. I feel like i grew up with you being similar ages and i loved watching you grow from a young little boy in a bow tie being the sweetest little guy in the entire world to this man that is so incredible and funny. You made it okay to be so into nerdy things and for that i thank you. I cant wait to see where this world will take you cause i know you will only do amazing things with your gifts. My favorite memory has to be any time you are with Maude (duh) and of course Sam chats and Sam has a point on the podcast. (And the Smaude kiss.....DAYUM)

Will Haynes: Like Sam i watched you grow up from this awkward little boy to afraid to be himself and grow up into  someone who simply doesn’t give a fuck and has been truly incredible comedian. You finally found yourself which is amazing and i’m so happy to see this side of you. I have loved seeing your fazes and seeing the other more senior comedians helping morph you into the person you are today. I cant wait to see what you do next.

Matt Leiberman: You brought something very different to the group, you were not afraid to be yourself and unashamed of who you were. You were an amazing host and incredible cook (which i always made the mistake of watching when i was hungry) and you are just such a sweet man who wants the best for people. You and your girlfriend are the cutest and i’m excited to see what comes next in your life.

Maude Garrett: You brought a new light to the new gen of Sourcefed Nerd. You are unbelievably stunning and amazing and so apologetically nerdy. I was never really into DnD until i saw you as the mauderator and you showed me a great and fun way to enjoy DnD, I’ve missed seeing you regularly on the channel but i know that one day you will take over this world and we will see nothing but you. Steven Suptic: You are probably one of the weirdest people on this planet in the best way possible. We have very similar senses of humor and dont mind being the butt of the joke sometimes. You are one of the only people i think that would openly piss there own pants in a serious moment just for the giggle (i’m going to pretend it was on purpose in the last table talk) I loved you on Super Panic Frenzy with Reina and the podcast was the best. I know you will do great things with your channel and now you can do more stuff with the Mindcrackers on the plus side.

Whitney Moore: You are just the most beautiful little pixie i think i have ever seen. You are so goofy and funny and quickly became one of my new favorite hosts. You have a corky edge to you and yet somehow so very cool at the same time. I love your sense of humor and i just think you are incredible. I know that this will only be a stepping stone in your life and i’m interested to see what is next for you.

Bree Essrig: You I have been watching for the longest back in the old days of youtube seeing you with Shane Dawson and Steve Greene, you have always been able to put a smile on my face with the different characters you play. You are not afraid to be “one of the boys” for lack of a better phrase and you were someone i looked up too when i was a young teenager just trying to figure myself out. Then you moved to pop trigger which you were amazing on you had me in stitches anytime you were on, and then when you got hired to Sourcefed I was so giddy because I had followed you for so long and just watching you change and grow over these years has just been a blast. I can’t wait to see what weird shit you and Steve decide to make cause you are really the best comedic couple and i’m sure whatever you do it will be amazing.

Mike Falzone: You like Bree i have been watching for years I believe since around 2007 i believe which is crazy to think. Your stand up is amazing you have such a cool air to you (even when you are geeking so hard about Wrestling) and you are unbelievably talented. And on top of that being an incredible musician it is unfair how talented you are and you are just going to keep growing and growing and doing bigger and badder things all the time. My favorite memories is just seeing you riff off of Steve and Elliott the three of you is just comedy gold.

Ava Gordy: I may not have known you for as long as some of the other hosts however your impact was still just as grand. You seems like such a sweet and compassionate person who really cared for those around you and still did everything in just such a funny way. I will admit i haven't seen every video you have been in but now i have time to go back and look at all of them and i’m pumped because you are incredible and just deserve the best in life. And I loved you in the people be like episode about Netflix and Chill

Candace Carrizales: You also I have may not have known as long as the others but you can keep up with them just as well. Its hard being the youngest sometimes but you didn’t let it stop you.My favorite video has to be your two truths and a lie with Steve and i bought one of those ginger drinks after just cause i was curious and you were completely right. You are a delight and brought some more fun energy to the gang. I like your don’t give a fuck attitude and you are just gonna continue to grow and be amazing

And lastly

Dani Rosenberg: I couldn’t not mention to you in all of this you have been the rock in all of this and keeping people from destroying everything. Not only do you keep Phils shit together but then you deal with all the people at Sourcefed and Sourcefednerd which i am sure is almost an impossible task. You have been a strong force behind all of this and i don’t think you get the credit you deserve you are amazing and beautiful and one of the most bad ass people on this whole planet. thank you for being you. And may i just say whenever i saw you in a thumbnail for table talk i have never clicked harder and faster then in those moments. 

Final thoughts... One i’m sure the last 3ish hours i spent free handing this at work was well spent. I am going to miss these channels and people so very much and i cant tank each and every one of them enough. I love you all from the bottom of my heart and i hope to see you do the incredible things i know you are capable of. Good luck in future indevers and i will still go back every day and re watch the old videos cause they are still hilarious and can make me smile at the drop of a hat. thank you. also if my grammar sucked i apologize 2 hours of sleep and just writing as i went along.

A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L’Engle

Context: There were a lot of books I read well before I was able to understand them. I don’t think there’s any harm in reading ahead of our intellect, since it’s a way of pushing ourselves forward, but it undoubtedly affects impressions. While I don’t remember struggling with A Wrinkle In Time or A Wind In The Door in spite of their difficult concepts, for whatever reason, A Swiftly Tilting Planet went right over my head. Maybe it was all the time travel and the overlapping family lines, but I just didn’t get it the first time around. As I got older, I learned to love it as much as the other two, but it's earned a new place in my heart and in my life.

I don't often get political on this platform. I have other social media for that. My blog is a place for bright and lovely things, and politics are rarely bright or lovely. But on election night 2020, this was the book I turned to for comfort. It is, after all, about a boy and a unicorn who go back in time to stop a mad dictator from destroying the planet. The stakes weren't quite that high in America, but on a night when I was filled with fear and dread over the future of my country (and remembering the dread and sadness of our last presidential election), L'Engle brought me hope that people could choose kindness and goodness, that the smallest choices could have an impact if they were made out of love. I don't often make sweeping statements about books "everyone" needs a copy of, but The Time Quartet would be in that category. In one way or another, these books have always been there for me, as books always are in our darkest hours.

About: The world is on the brink of nuclear war, which could have a ripple effect on the entire universe. In order to prevent this, fifteen-year-old Charles Wallace is sent back in time with the unicorn, Gaudior, and his sister Meg kything from the present to try and alter the Might Have Beens that would lead to peace. He finds himself in a generations-old feud between two Welsh brothers, one who values peace and goodness and the other who seeks power at any price. Trigger warnings: character death, parent/sibling death, drowning, fires, severe injury, severe illness, abusive households, racism (some countered), ableism (countered), grief.

Thoughts: The plot of Planet is somewhat more sophisticated and the story more of a slow burn than the previous two books, and it’s harder to follow. It's taken age and multiple readings for me to track all the name repetitions and crossovers in the multiple timelines. (If I were a more enterprising spirit--or a better English student--I might make myself a family tree of the Maddox/Llawcae families, but I tend not to want to pause and work out details when I’m in a story that I’m reading for fun.) While making all the connections makes the organize-y part of my brain happy, it isn’t strictly necessary to understand the bigger messages of the novel. If Time examined things on a macroscopic level, spanning galaxies, and Door took a look at the microscopic level, Planet's dimension is time and how one small thing affects another over decades, centuries, or longer. They're a near-perfect complement to one another.

The story is grounded in the much-beloved Murray family, and through Charles's connection with Meg, the narrative returns to them time and time again like a touchstone. The other settings and characters shift frequently as he jumps among generations, which makes it difficult to get attached to some of them–-at least until I stopped seeing them as separate rather than a continuing pattern. This time around, I felt like I had a better sense of their individual stories: how Brandon's connection with Maddok makes them stronger, how Matthew's selflessness saves his family (and, further down the line, possibly the world), how Beezie's life was a tragic victory for darkness. It’s more subtle, but it continues themes of love and connectedness that I enjoyed from the first two books. In L'Engle’s world, every small action matters and there’s always a chance for redemption.
