In ‘God Fearing Child’ Hercules and Hera worked together to get Cronus’ bones to kill Zeus. This was Zeus’ response to the characters individually for it:
Zeus to Hera: “You’ve disappointed me.”
Zeus to Hercules: “You’ve never disappointed me. Especially today.”
The understanding that a man can be autonomous and can still be deserving of respect but a woman cannot…
It’s a double-standard because they worked together in going against Zeus and yet Zeus still respects his own son but not his own fucking wife who defied his orders too. I see how it is. This is why ‘Hercules’ the show is not ‘Xena’ the show because there’s none of that bullshit.
It’s blatant sexism and misogyny the text doesn’t want to acknowledge outright. I knew something about this episode threw me off. Even though it’s the exact same Universe, it’s not the same show because those kind of moments belong in Hercules’ world. Not Xena’s world.
You could say it works because Zeus is technically the “villain” of the episode and a villain would be like this. But I am reminded of that line from Ares in ‘Ties That Bind’: “sometimes the best man for the job is a woman”. And he was the “villain” in that episode. Or one of them.
And even his lines in this episode didn’t feel right at all.
It says that the writer for the episode is Chris Manheim.
But I don’t buy it because this episode isn’t my beloved XENA. Besides from that… There are several recastings which are really horrible choices. I just don’t feel good about this episode at all. It doesn’t feel authentic to me.
The only thing that’s worth my attention about it is this:

THEY LIVE (1988)

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick a**. And I’m all out of bubblegum.” A classic movie with choice phrases and stellar acting. Incredibly iconic.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tumblr media
John Nada blows into town looking for work like most people in his day and age. He is able to find a labor job at a worksite and a new friend, Frank, who helps him find a camp where he can sleep and get food. All seems fine except the mysterious TV messages that come through talking about some hidden controlling force that We The People don’t know about. John finds a mysterious lab in the back of a church and they are manufacturing… Sunglasses? Before John can figure out what in the heck this means there is a violent police raid where they come in and wreck everything. John is lucky to get out alive and even luckier to know where a stash of sunglasses are which he takes (not knowing at the time they are sunglasses) but when he finally puts them on everything changes.
Tumblr media
The world, through the lenses of the sunglasses, is black and white, all advertisements scream “OBEY” and “STAY ASLEEP.” When he removes the glasses everything looks normal, in color and with all the regular words, but as soon as the glasses are back on it is creepy black and white world. While walking around in this new world John discovers that some people aren’t people at all but hideous alien creatures disguised as humans! He even looks right at one for a really long period of time and it barely gets suspicious even though they all have watches on and as soon as they get suspicious they can call each other and say “hey, we have one that can see.” and then they all converge on the guy that can see which is what happens to John after he sees another one of those ugly Aliens at the grocery store. Alien policemen attack him so he attacks them right back. He takes their guns and heads to the bank.
Tumblr media
John lights up the bank and kills as many aliens as he can but one teleports before his very eyes! Narrowly escaping, John makes his way into the parking garage where he kidnaps Holly, another human. Holly is very scared of this crazy man with a gun but is listening to him because he is a crazy man with a gun! She is instructed to take him to her home and she complies. While there she pulls a trick and smashes a wine bottle on his head and throws him out a glass window. Again, John narrowly escapes, this time making his way back to Frank this time who wants nothing to do with John's Murdering Ass. “I’m giving you a choice, either put on these glasses or start eating that trash can.” They beat the ever-loving shit out of each other. Frank finally puts on the glasses and is stunned by the alien life. “Brother, life’s a bitch… and she’s back in heat.”
Tumblr media
Now that Frank is on board there are two people in this wacky fight! But that isn’t enough to take down the aliens who control the police! Good thing they meet up with another human who has the sunglasses! There is to be a secret meeting for the resistance, tonight! The boys go and Holly is there, she apologizes for nearly killing John but he had a gun to her, she doesn’t need to apologies for shit anything! During the meeting they all get contacts that work like the sunglasses (cool!). Oh no! The alien police force raid the meeting! Guess who narrowly escapes? John AND Frank! They are able to use the alien teleport to go to the alien headquarters! From there they find the alien signal that makes all people see the aliens as humans and they try to shut it off. Betrayal! Holly is working for the aliens and shoots Frank, then goes for John! But John will die for the cause, giving a middle finger to the aliens as he goes down, taking the signal with him. The world is removed from its mass hypnosis and are disgusted by the alien presence among them. The day is saved thanks to John and Frank (respectively).
