Mood swings are part of human life. But there are things we can control:
1. Mental Exercise:
Taking a few minutes to be aware of your breath can help you be mindful and reduce stress. I sometimes stand up, look around, and do some slow, deep breathing.
2. Physical Exercise:
A brisk walk, some stretching, or a few reps of an exercise (push-ups, plank, jumping jacks) can release endorphins, making you feel better instantly.
I start almost every morning with 20-30 minutes of yoga. Working on your mind or body first is a great way to feel productive.
3. Eat Right:
A balanced diet isn't just good for the body; it's fuel for the mind. Being present and mindful when choosing and consuming food is a great way to start.
I look at the ingredients and when in doubt, simple, whole foods will not disappoint.
4. Social Support:
A chat with a good friend or mentor can often provide a new perspective that brightens your mood.
When I am in need, I think of positive people, I call them, and I ask them to cheer me up!
5. Routine:
Having a daily schedule can provide a sense of predictability and control, thus reducing mood instability. Creating some structure around priorities can reduce unnecessary stress.
