Boomkat Product Review: Cambridge-based box buster Nochexxx resurfaces with another crafty salvo of wronged up electronics for Chloe Frieda’s Alien Jams label.

From his early forages on RAMP and Werk Discs to his wildly-underrated 2015 album for Type, we’ve always had a soft spot for Dave Henson’s NOCHEXXX output. He’s back at his best, instigating sonic warfare on this new Planet Bangs LP for Chloe Frieda’s ever-impressive Alien Jams platform. Commencing in quite stark fashion with the first of two homages to South London borough Lewisham, Henson pulls you on a slow trudge through the murky trenches amidst a barrage of percussive fire, before landing on a typically NOCHEXXXian groove with the low-slung, gristly throb of Vision Feet.

Metawitch is NOCHEXXX at his confounding best, distracting you with some field-recorded clops in the Cambridge countryside before launching off down a wormhole of acid-drenched free party madness. Stick Shift further outlines the post-apocalyptic vista that shapes Planet Bangs, conjuring up a scratchy, unsettling seven minutes of loop techno that would have put the jitters on Regis. Lewisham doesn’t sound any less desolate on Pt II, a messy, weightless assemblage of low frequency sub blasts, freeform percussive slices and modulated delirium. The sprint for the finishing line is soundtracked by the dank Drexciyan thrust of Overhound.

The scene where Kristoff rips Anna’s dress off and forcefully throws it off stage, while telling her how stupid she is, was very triggering for me, especially after seeing it twice.* When I was young, I stupidly got into a car with two young men. One of them tried to rape me in the back seat. After several minutes, I was able to physically fight him off, but only because he was very drunk. The other man sat and watched. After I fought (and I do mean FOUGHT) the attempted rapist off, his brother took pity on me and dropped me at a pay phone. It never occurred to me to contact the police, because I knew that I had asked for this to happen to me by getting into the car in the first place, even though all I had been offered was a ride home. Notice I still think of myself as stupid for being trusting, rather than blaming them for being the violent criminal and his co-conspirator that they were. More than 30 years of the women’s movement later, this is what society still teaches women. This is what Frozen the Musical teaches women. The episode begins with an overhead shot of a man on the phone and a car parked on a road through an open grassy area that stretches to the horizon. We hear crickets, but their rhythm is off. The colors and light are oversaturated despite the cloudy sky. The sounds, colors and focus are all off, blurring in and out, too bright or loud when they should be dull, sharply focused areas next to blurry areas.
