Striking the set

On the back of a drawing  of a man on a couch that I “painted”in 1986, I wrote the following;

Over “Striking the Set” November 19, 2086: a reaction to the first weekend Hand to Hand, The Aids Plague hits.

I later felt this was a picture of Daryl Speicher in his last days here. It was a good likeness painted before I met him. He, of course, was not a couch person. But he did die 2/3/1987.

He was my first match.

This is actually a painting of Glen Miller. His beauty so overwhelmed me. His tragic truth so shocked me, and later, his courage in death’s parlor so inspired me.

His mother called today “Glen passed away at 7 or so last night."

The angel of energy visits the couch. The final curtain descends. 

Of the four men on the couch that November day, Glenn is the first to go.

Al Adami died July 3, 1987

Joel,still alive and doing very well. Still with life energy.

I have had this painting which I entitled “striking the Set” hanging for over 30 years. I took it down today to relocate it, and realized that I had written notes about it on the back of the painting. 

Those notes are included above.

I lived in Sacramento, California from about may of 1986 to August 1987.

While there, I applied to work in an Aids support group called Hand to Hand. I had to be interviewed prior to acceptance. Al Adami interviewed me. I later learned that Al had Aids. I was shocked as the first person I knew who had it. During the training for Hand to Hand, a Doctor who ran the training named Elizabeth and Al did a dying scene for we 15 or so trainees. Elizabeth helped Al “die”.Powerful experience. As Hand to Hand volunteers, we would help people with Aids through their illness and death. 

I am including a photo of the “Striking the Set” painting and what I wrote on the back in the next blog post.

I had been in three plays in 1985-1986. When a play ends, the stage set is dismantled and taken away. This is called “striking the set”.I borrowed  the term for my painting, since Aids in 1986-1987 usually meant striking the set of a life.

Glen Miller’s tragic truth was that  at maybe age 30, he had Aids and was dying. John Hickman and Al Adami were also about my age then, early 30’s.

Glen Miller wanted to live to see his June birthday in 1987.

A group of we Hand to Hand volunteers went to his house. We brought champagne and cake. We sat around his bed once floor and laughed and talked. Glen drank some champagne, ate some cake and seemed to be happy.

As I was arriving at his house someone from in side was playing the song “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore” by the Highwaymen. When I hear that song now, I think of that haunting moment.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church A protected landmark, the construction of the The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church was started in 1785 according to the plans of Johann Michael Schajdlet in the Roccoco or Late Baroque (”Zopf”) style; which is rare in Hungary. Twenty years of construction yielded the East-facing church. János Adami, a stone carver from Eger who worked in Italy, worked on the construction site. After the Turkish rule, Greek settlers and merchants moved into Miskolc who wanted to have their own church, necessitating the construction of a new Orthodox Church. At that time, Miskolc was mainly inhabited by Catholics and Protestants and they already had their churches. Its furnishings are also in Zopf style. What makes the church so special is that it has the largest iconostasis in Central Europe; 16 meters high and showing 87 scenes from the life of Jesus. It also presents the eleven great feasts (more specifically, there are twelve great feasts in the Orthodox Church, but Easter is considered a feast of feasts, and so only eleven are designated as "great" feasts). The iconostasis itself was made in the wood carving workshop of Miklós Jankovits of Eger. The icons, with the exception of four, are the works of the Viennese painter Anton Kuchelmeister. The icon of the temple is a copy of the Ahtirka Mother of God, which was donated to the church by the Russian tsarina, Catherine II, during her visit to Miskolc.

Star Trek: Lower Decks' return to Deep Space Nine only brought back Quark and Kira (and Morn), but there's logic to why other Niners didn't show.

Only Colonel Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) and Quark (Armin Shimerman) (and Morn) appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks' return to Deep Space Nine, but there's logic to why the other Niners didn't show. In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 6, "Hear All, Trust Nothing," the USS Cerritos docked at DS9 so that Colonel Kira could work with Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) to open trade talks with the Karemma from the Gamma Quadrant. Meanwhile, the Lower Deckers got to experience DS9's Promenade, and they even rescued Quark when the secret of his business success was exposed and the Ferengi was arrested by the Karemma.

While Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans naturally hoped to see as many familiar faces as possible, it makes sense that Kira and Quark were the only DS9 actors to reprise their roles. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's series finale gave a built-in reason why the guest spots were limited: With the United Federation of Planets' victory in the Dominion War, most of DS9's eclectic cast of characters left the station. The most important departure was Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), who became one with the Prophets and ascended as a non-linear being. While Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), Lt. Ezri Dax (Nicole De Boer), and Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) remained on the station, 6 years have also passed since DS9's finale. They may have also moved on, but regardless, Star Trek: Lower Decks' story about Quark cheating the Karemma didn't require a doctor, a counselor, or a reporter. It would have been fun to at least see them appear in non-speaking roles at Quark's, but Lower Decks understandably opted to keep their crossover simple, and they never promised a full DS9 reunion.

It was great to see Colonel Kira still in charge of Deep Space Nine while Quark has become a successful intergalactic entrepreneur. DS9's other cast members are likely still where the series finale left them in their lives: Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) returned to Earth with his family to teach at Starfleet Academy. Worf (Michael Dorn) became the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon homeworld, but he returned to the USS Enterprise-E in Star Trek: Nemesis. Garak (Andrew Robinson) went home to help Cardassia rebuild after the war. Rom (Max Grodénchik) became the Ferengi Grand Nagus and his wife, Leeta (Chase Masterson), accompanied him to Ferenginar. Nog is likely still in Starfleet (although Aron Eisenberg sadly passed away in 2019) and Odo rejoined the Great Link (and Rene Auberjonois also died in 2019).

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 confirmed that Martok (J.G. Hertzler) is still the Klingon Chancellor but Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's villains mostly died, and they are unlikely to ever return. Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) is trapped forever in the Book of the Pah-Wraiths while Kai Winn Adami perished (Louise Fletcher recently passed away, sadly). Damar (Casey Biggs) died a heroic rebel leader on Cardassia, and every clone of Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs) is no more.
