Michael Faraday & Parma Violets?

Any other 80s/90s kids on here learn at school that Michael Faraday (inventor) invented Parma Violets - the love them or hate them no in between sweets (candy)?

Because I swear I did - we went to some museum or show or presentation OUT somewhere as a school trip and it was all about Michael Faraday and mostly what you would expect BUT they also told us he invented Parma Violets for his wife.

I remember this vividly because I did think at the time that inventing a sweetie for your sweetheart was pretty top notch romance. (NGL, is still up there).

The other thing that makes me sure is they gave us all a packet to remember him by and most people in my class hated them but I did not so I ate a LOT of Parma violets that day and felt quite unwell.

Consequently whenever I eat a packet of Parma violets I do remember Michael Faraday but having mentioned to my husband who looked at me blankly and then consulted the internets I believe this may be false advertising and they are JUST SWEETS.

Michael Faraday, né le 22 septembre 1791 et mort le 25 août 1867 est un physicien et chimiste britannique, connu pour ses travaux fondamentaux dans le domaine de l'électromagnétisme, l'électrochimie, l'induction électromagnétique, le diamagnétisme et l'électrolyse de l'électromagnétisme, ouvrant la voie aux travaux théoriques de James Clerk Maxwell et à des inventions telles que le moteur électrique, la dynamo ou les alternateurs. Vers 1821, attiré par les expériences du physicien danois Oersted, Faraday vérifie, en inversant l'expérience, que le courant électrique a la propriété de changer la direction d'une aiguille magnétique. Il prouve alors que les aimants exercent une action mécanique sur les conducteurs traversés par le courant électrique. Pour parvenir à cette conclusion, Faraday place un aimant verticalement au-dessus d'un bain de mercure, de sorte qu'une de ses extrémités soit immergée dans le liquide. Il connecte ensuite un fil conducteur au mercure, fermant ainsi le circuit, et observe que le fil se déplace autour de son point de suspension, et décrit des cercles autour de l'aimant. La notion de champ (qui fait de l'espace vide des mathématiciens un milieu doué de propriétés physiques et qui réalise la synthèse entre les théories opposées issues des grandes controverses du XVIIe siècle) lui doit manifestement beaucoup. Il a été l'un des principaux fondateurs de l'électrochimie en tant que discipline scientifique. Faraday découvre, entre autres substances chimiques, le benzène et invente le système du nombre d'oxydation. Faraday définit la composition du clathrate de chlore qui avait été découvert par Humphry Davy en 1810.
