Hello! I am so happy to find someone who writes for the naturals!
Michael Townsend x Redding!Reader
Dean would not be happy. Like at all.
There would definitely be a, keep the door open rule.
And he would make it his personal mission to make sure you two aren't left alone for long.
He strikes me as an overprotective big bro
(also established reader plz)

you and dean were close, probably closer than most siblings would admit they were to their brother or sister. being only a year younger than him made it easier to connect and relate to each other.
because of the trauma brought on during childhood because of your serial killer father, you and dean were closer than ever. dean also became a lot more protective over you as the years passed by.
dean had always been your protector since childhood — beating up anyone who bullied you, scaring off mean girls, bandaging up any cuts and bruises, etc.
when the two of you started becoming more aware of your father’s horrendous acts, dean did his best to keep you out of it. he was the first to step for any torturous task your father asked of you, and was always quick to step in front of you in the presence of your dad.
after the whole investigation and arrest of your father, you’d met agent briggs & sterling, who at the time were married. there he sat the two of you down to explain the two of you had a special trait that labeled you under the category ‘natural.’ dean’s gift being profiling while yours revolved around being a forensic analyst.
it was difficult to comprehend, specially at a young age, but the both of you mutually agreed the best option was to go with agent briggs to join the beginning of the naturals program.
you were brought to some sort of safe house, where you were ought to live for who knew however long. there you met an older man, whose name was judd hawkins. you found out he was the one going to watch over you and manage house tasks.
after awhile, you were introduced to someone new, also natural. her name – lia zhang.
she was a natural lie detector and at deception. you were a little wary of her at first, but then the three of you became close.
however, she had always trusted dean more and was more best friends with him than you.
a part of you felt left out, but you didn’t speak up in fear of being dramatic. it was enough lia was your friend you told yourself.
not too long after another girl joined the small group, sloane tavish who was a natural statistician.
she was quite weird and awkward, spewing the most random facts when she saw an opportunity, but you got along with her great. however, she was almost occupied in the basement doing experiments to be a friend to you in the traditional sense.
you’d still hoped for a best friend of your own. and your wish got granted and brought to in the form of michael townsend, an emotion reader.
though at first, he was like lia when he arrived, closed off and not very open to friendships. but eventually you all warmed up to each other.
now that there was the presence of another male in the house, there was tension between the two. dean warned you to be weary around michael because he didnt trust him fully yet.
however, michael saw to this and took the opportunity to come around you whenever he pleased. and dean would retaliate by telling michael to stay away, but this only encouraged him.
you found him quite annoying at first, reading and calling out your emotions bluntly as casually as he says your name. but after awhile the two of you became very good friends.
dean was more lenient as he got to know michael, but the two never became much of friends - more on a frenemies level.
you and michael connected over books, music, and learned more about each other. his mask started collapsing and you were able to open up the persona he tried so hard to hide.
when him and lia started getting involved, you did your best not to care. you told yourself michael could be with who he wants, and him opening up to you didn't mean he liked you romantically.
once cassie joined you guys, you and her became quick friends. you knew what it felt like to be left out, so you wanted to include her as much as you could.
she helped you in realizing your feelings for michael. you hadn't ever let the thought cross your mind before, but after you confinded in cassie on your insecurity about lia and michael - it became clear.
so you chicken out and spent time with michael less. it was lucky for you that being best friends with him meant you knew a few tricks to cover up your true emotions. but michael could tell something was off once you slowly distanced yourself.
though your brother didn't mention it, you knew he was cheering on lia and michael if it meant you and michael disconnected. but he became occupied with cassie to get a chance to profile your reasoning for the distance.
it came to a head when he cornered you one night, demanding an explanation. caught off guard, you let a crack of your true emotions reveal, and it was enough for michael to quickly pick up what it meant.
you were utterly embarrassed and ready to face rejection, but he surprised you and instead kissed you.
he admitted he had a fancy for you, as he put it. and the two of you began your relationship.
you wanted to hide it for a bit because you knew dean would not approve whatsoever. but living with naturals meant there it was close to impossible to keep any secrets. lia was quick to catch on, and didn't waste a second in spreading it to the others.
the first thing dean did was punch michael in the face. it happened so abruptly, you both were in the living room then dean strided in angrily and just sucked punched your boyfriend.
you immediately shouted at you brother for his overreaction, but dean kept throwing threats at michael to stay away from you . michael clutched his face, but wasn't faced - he was actually amused and just gave your brother a taunting smirk.
you had to physically hold dean with all your might to prevent him from throwing another punch.
dean's protectiveness only got worse from there.
he watched the the two of you like a hawk. if he saw you close to one another, he would stand or sit between you both to divide you.
if you and michael went somewhere together, trust he was following closely behind.
for instance, michael took you out to the movies for a date - going as far to rent the entire theater for you both.
you leaned your head on michael at some point during the film, and that's when dean appeared from the seats behind you, and pushed your head off.
you were startled so bad, the popcorn in your lap went flying.
dean consistently tried to tell you that michael was going to break your heart, he isn't the type to be serious, and that his past relationship with lia was proof of that.
it was so much worse when he caught the two of you kissing or making out.
he screamed to scare you two parts, physically separated the two of you, and he sometimes even tackled michael.
you were completely embarrassed of your brother's actions, part of you feared it would actually scare your boyfriend away, but michael didn't care for dean's interference, he continued to be with you when and where ever he pleased.
once cassie and dean got together, things cooled down a bit. she managed to get him to see a bit of reasoning.
but dean still had a set of rules he expected you to follow.
number one on the list was - if you and michael are alone in a room together, the door had to be open. especially if it was his room you were in.
there was an incident that brought it on.
you and michael frequently went up to his room for privacy to hang out. usually, you took naps, watched movies, researched a case, etc., although the both of you always just end up kissing on his bed. at this point, dean still could not believe the two of you were together.
well, one afternoon the two of you were looking through interviews for a new case. then michael claimed he was desperately bored and needed to be entertained. you rolled your eyes at his antics and continued reading the transcripts.
but then he slyly began kissing your neck, slowly pulling you away from the case and into the comfort of his bed.
next thing you knew, you were under him, making out devoutly on his bed. no surprise that michael got what he wanted.
his hands made it way under your shirt when dean came barging in, having an inquiry on the case you were supposed to be looking at.
once he saw the position you two were in, he flipped out. yelling at michael to get off of you and threatening to kill him. you immediately sat up, composing yourself and tried to calm your brother down. michael was of no help, he just rolled his eyes at his outrage and said, "if your this angry at kissing, at hate to see your reaction to our other activities."
you threw a pillow at him, "not helping!"
everyone else ran into the room because of the loud commotion, much to your humiliation, thinking a something horrible had occurred.
lia was holding back a hard laugh, cassie tried to reel dean in, sloane threw in some statistics on sister and brother's best friend relations, judd had to break up michael and dean's fight, and agents briggs and sterling just stayed at their door annoyed by the whole event.
you wanted to forget that whole event entirely, the thought enough makes you wanna cringe in shame.
ever since then, dean has made it his sole purpose to ensure the door is always open; he even walks by the room every few hours, which he swears is just a coincidence.
the only common subject that brings michael and dean together is you. it seems to be the only thing they agree on when it pertains to your well-being.
they are quick to object to anything that would put you in danger.
lia had convinced you and cassie to go along with her to a college party, she claimed it would help you guys find more evidence for a lead on the case. she gave you guys some interesting clothing to fit the role.
you three got in smoothly and split up to talk to possible suspects or witnesses. you talked to were able to talk with a few people, feigning curiosity. lia had been right, there was connections to the case at the party.
you were talking with a guy who was as interesting as a brick, but he was unknowingly drunkenly babbling about possible useful information, so you acted interested, nodding along to his obnoxious story.
but then he started getting handsy, trying to get you into his room, and you declined very clearly multiple times, but dude couldn't take the message.
when you tried to walk away he grabbed your wrist harshly, calling you malicious names for leading him on. you were on the verge of calling for lia or cassie, when the drunk man was forcefully pulled away from you.
you were then pushed behind someone protectively, and you recognized his back appearance; it was dean.
turning toward direction of where the drunk guy was pulled into, and there was your boyfriend, angrily holding the guy by the collar.
"don't touch my girlfriend."
"girlfriend? dude, hate to break it to you, but she was all over me. practically whoring herself out since she's arrived."
michael wasted no time in throwing a fist to the guy's face for his remark.
dean also look agitated at the guy's degradtion of you, and for the first time, looked satisfied at michael's actions. eventually, dean had to pull michael away from seriously injuring the guy, and drawing even more attention.
cassie and lia made their way to you, surprised by the arrival of the guys, who looked pretty peeved at the fact you all three snuck out.
wasting no time, you all were driven back home by michael; quietly making your way into the house to avoid alerting sterling and judd.
lia and cassie were smart to quickly to make their way to their rooms, but you weren't so lucky; dean held your arm to stop you from escaping.
you were used to dean's reprimands, and even the occasional chide from michael when you did something dangerously, but you knew you were in for it if both of them were ready to scold you.
dean started it - rhetorically, asking what were you thinking, then went into his 'protective brother' rant you were too use to. then michael jumped in, saying you going along with a lia plan was never the best idea and that you should've at least told him to go along with you.
they even took turns having a go at how stupid the entire plan was. you never wanted them to go back to fighting more than now.
why couldn't they have bonded over sports or games like normal people.
you tried to defend your side, saying you did find helpful information, but it fell deaf to their ears.
you were watched like a hawk for week after that. dean even threatened to put a ankle monitor on you. michael was even amused at his threat. the jerks.
dean and michael's small alliance quickly ended the moment michael made a indecent comment about you at dinner.
in time, dean did start getting along with michael. he still liked to act protective, but you knew in his heart he trusted michael and knew he was a good man for you.
but to this day, dean continues to glare at any pda you and michael share.
god, you'd hate to see the day michael asks dean for his blessing.

Micheal Townsend x reader. Maybe just headcannons or small imagine (your choice) about their relationship how reader would comfort Micheal. Just feel like Micheal deserves someone to comfort and reassure him ya know. And thx, you write for theese characters that don’t have many people to write for them. ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for requesting a naturals fic! Sorry it took so long I had a relapse.
Michael Townsend x Reader
Michael had issues. After everything with his dad, he was still in a bad place mentally. Any small argument turned into a screaming match within mere seconds. And he wouldn't talk after it. He shut down.
That was what led to this.
You couldn't even remember why you were both arguing, it had been something stupid like he was jealous. Dean had went into your room to borrow a pen. Michael had thought the worst and what started as a small argument had escalated.
"SO FUCKING HIT ME," Michael finally screamed. You saw all sorts of emotions flood through him as he stormed out. You remained speechless.
Soon enough, your body went into fight or flight. You ran after him. He had slammed the door to his room and was sulking inside.
"Baby? I'm sorry I should not have-"you were cut off by Michael shoving the door open before pulling you inside. He scooped you up in a hug and you felt hot tears on your shoulder.
"It's okay, I'm sorry," you whisper and Michael shakes from the unresolved emotions flooding out of him.
"No, it's not your fault," he says and sits back. His eyes are already red and slightly puffy. Your heart aches for him.
You scoop him back into your arms and hold him. He sobs into your shoulder but you don't stop. He needs comfort, he deserves comfort.

August 2018
Summary: My Senior Year. Man was I a mess. I was doing my stage management internship while writing my twenty four page research paper. Which, I had no plan for at all that year. So, I decided last minute to just do it on my favorite fairytale and just run with it. My professor had me rewrite the first half of my paper at least ten times that semester before I even got it right. And, by that point I was stressing on whether or not I was going to even be able to finish my paper.

The Five Gifts of Hathor
Gorgon Island, February 1952
Gorgon Island is like a perpetual spring garden. The lower parts of the island are dry grass and brush with palms, dragon blood trees, and acacia. Further up the mountain ridges on the windward side are the laurel forests, and above them the pines and sycamores. It’s never too hot or too cold, and the sunsets are so lovely.
Like this evening, with the sky all violets and dusky blues and gold. The sun melting into the Atlantic. This is the time of nightjars, nightingales, and bats. It’s a magical time. Especially when Edith joins Emily on the porch working on some knitting.
“Got Bree down for the night,” Edith says.
“That’s good,” Emily says. The baby’s been sleeping better recently, which bismillah will help them sleep. It helps keep those black dog feelings away from Emily. She’s a far better mother than she gives herself credit for, yet still she runs herself ragged. The healing factor helps a lot, physically, but she needs all the rest she can get. Michael even promised no missions for her until she’s ready and wants to go. They have all the time in the world now.
“How’s the jumper coming along? She asks.
Emily holds up her work. It’s a dark blue guernsey jumper meant for Pat, his thirty-ninth is coming up in March. “Seems to be going decently. Just have to be sure the knitting’s tight. Can’t imagine he’ll wear it as his Sunday best.”
“Dear Pat’s too practical for such things,” Edith says, wrapping an arm around Emily’s shoulders.
They sit quietly for a while, enjoying each other’s company. She presses her face close to Emily’s hair, catching the lingering scent of her perfume - iris as delicate as gossamer serenely ornamenting her skin.
Look at you Edie, being such a maudlin poet.
“I just remembered something,” Emily says, leaning back on Edith’s shoulder.
“Hmmm.”
“Been ten years since we met.” “Really? That long?’ she muses.
“Yes,” Emily laughs. “Funny how all that time went.”
It feels like yesterday as the cliché goes. At the same time it’s ancient history.
“I still can’t believe how nervous I was around you when we first met.”
Cairo, Egypt, February, 1942
So this is Cairo?
Emily comes into the city at the head of a sandstorm and quartered in a FANY barracks close to SOE headquarters - the worst kept secret in the city. Her bunkmates are nice enough, a few are SOE like her, and the work’s not too bad. It’s translating and paraphrasing intercepted messages. It’s easy enough, but it keeps her thinking.
It’s simple, analytical work that requires her full attention so there’s no room to think about such things as home, France, and especially Lyon. It was simple. For a few hours a day, Emily can ignore the feeling of being set adrift. Listless. Directionless. No one knows what to do with her.
Emily Gower, the heroine who discovered the vibranium smuggling ring. Mentioned in dispatches. She’s also damaged goods. Her cell’s blown up, there’s a body in Lyon, and she’s the lone survivor. What do you do with a girl like her?
Send her far from home to cool her heels and keep her out of trouble. Rotten city to do that, there’s nothing but trouble from the men. With the Axis so near, life becomes desperate.
“I can’t possibly go along, Vera, I’d be the odd girl out. Two couples and the spinster, I’d be a complete bore.”
They’re all in a common room. Emily’s curled up in an armchair with a book by Sylvia Townsend Warner. She tries focusing on it to keep herself from eavesdropping and failing miserably. At least the cover acts as a good screen.
Edith Harker is a FANY driver and heart achingly beautiful. She’s tall with auburn hair and lovely blue eyes. She sort of looks like Ingrid Bergman. Emily sometimes casts her as a heroine from a novel - Helen Graham is where her mind goes most of the time. Harker’s talking with another FANY driver and she’s always friendly enough with people, but there’s a certain solitude about her. Not aloofness. There’s a sadness about her. A desire for connection, but possibly the fear of it, as well.
“Oh come now, I’m sure Bertie could drum up some young man for you.”
“No, no. Don’t go to all that trouble for me. You and Ruby go and have fun. I’ll be fine.”
“Alright,” Vera concedes. “Just don’t keep yourself cooped up, dear.”
Harker politely waves Vera off and collapses into the armchair next to Emily. She sprawls in the chair, legs extended out, taking up as much room as possible. There’s something of a pout as she lets a bored expression pass over her face and stares into middle distance. She’s alone in her own world. All Emily could do was wonder what it was like.
Then Harker sighs and looks over at her and her mouth goes dry.
"Good book?" She asks.
Suddenly, Emily feels her cheeks flush and her hair stand on end. They’ve exchanged polite words before. The requisite “hellos” and “pardon mes’ of life. This was the first time Edith Harker actually asked her something. And all Emily can do is nod.
Harker tilts her head and reads out the title, “Lolly Willowes. Good pick.”
“You’ve read it?” she asks, surprised.
“Of course,” Harker replies.
It’s a bit of an odd book to read, not that Emily didn’t mind more popular fair like Nancy Mitford or Emily Fox-Seton. And she loves Christie and du Maurier. Reading a Sylvia Townsend Warner is like Virginia Woolf in her opinion. It’s good stuff, but people think you’re putting on airs, especially where she’s from. And Bethan Gower’s daughters were always putting on airs according to some.
“I like the idea of running away to become a witch and fall in love with the devil,” Harker adds with a wicked grin. “Seems like the only way a woman can be alone if she’s a wicked witch.”
“Make herself as unappealing to men as possible?,” Emily adds, much to her surprise. It came out so naturally.
“That and to get away from her family. Especially if she wants any independence.”
“Have you read Rebecca? The du Maurier book?” Emily blurts out the question.
Harker raises a brow, “Yes,” she answers. “I liked it well enough. Though the second Mrs. de Winter could have grown a spine sooner.”
“Yes…” Emily says. “So anyway I heard that one of the cinema’s playing the film. It’s Hitchcock directing. And it’s got Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier.”
“Oh, yes! Didn’t he also do Jamaica Inn?”
Emily nods, “Though honestly, the book’s far better. Though I’m biased, I really like the book.”
“Same here,” Harker says. “But I do like Joan Fontaine. And Vera’s right, I should get out more.” She looks over at Emily, an eyebrow arched in curiosity. “Care for the cinema?”
Emily’s taken aback. She’s still astonished that someone like Edith Harker would take any interest in her. It’s thrilling nonetheless and she’s been so lonely. So she swallows back her fear and nods, “That’ sounds like fun.”
Gorgon Island
Emily and Edith make tea for themselves, enjoying themselves with music and a lot of laughs. They reminisce about the past and talk about all the things Sabrina’s gotten up to. She’s babbling, and crawling, and finds everything fascinating. Hair-raisingly so at times.
“So when was it when you realized…” Emily asks. Maybe a little deliberately coy.
“Realize what?” Edith replies, hiding a smile behind her tea cup.
Emily shrugs with a smile, “You know…” She gestures to indicate their connection. “Was it right away?”
Edith lowers her cup and stares up to a corner of the ceiling. “It did take a bit. Sort of two stages.”
Emily gives a quizzical tilt to her head that gets Edith laughing, “You’ll have to forgive me love, I’m still a recovering Catholic. Had to get over the guilt and all that.”
“I mean, I’m a recovering Calvinist. You’re in good company.”
“Well then,” Edith says, clapping her hands together in mock prayer, turning her blue eyes to the heavens. “Forgive me father for I have sinned.” She turns her gaze to Emily. “I have committed the sin of Lust, for Emily Gower looks ravishing in a red bathing suit.”
Cairo, Egypt, March, 1942
The barracks have gathered around the swimming pool, some as sunbathers, others as swimmers. It’s one of the few days that is not dominated by sand storms.
Edith sits on a deck chair, reading Jean Rhys and once in a while glancing up at the pool. For the most part, she minds her own business, content under a shady palm with an engaging book.
By chance she needs a sip of her lemonade. And by chance she sees Emily Gower emerge from the pool.
It’s a simple, halter neck bathing suit in poppy red. Modest by many standards. But Emily Gower looks like a nymph of Artemis. A Spartan warrior girl. She’s short and boyish, yet her body is sinewy. Edith’s gaze drinks her in, her imagination wanders to shaded groves and moonlit hunts. She sees Emily stalking through the woods with silent ease, bow and arrow in hand. Poised to strike.
Emily gets over to her deck chair, toweling herself off. She takes off her swimming cap, unpinning her hair and letting it loose. It falls heavily on her shoulders in waves of rich reddish gold, catching the light of the afternoon sun as she runs her fingers through it.
She turns her head and Edith ducks behind her book. It’s rude to stare and she knows her face flushed a vivid red. Since she was a school girl, Edith has known that she’s fancied members of her own sex just as much as she loved men. Sometimes more so. She had been raised to view such feelings as unnatural. As sinful. Something to confess to Father Brady and pray on the rosary about. Hope that God will take away such feelings.
But what if she didn’t want these feelings to go away? If she no longer cared what her father’s wrathful God thought was right and wrong, then what’s holding her back?
“You make me sound like Betty Grable,” Emily says incredulously. Truth be told, she’s always thought herself rather plain. No matter what people told her, there was always that nagging doubt.
Edith looks at her a bit cockeyed, “Well honestly, you’re not like one of those Hollywood types. But you are striking. Got a way about you that’s rather bewitching.”
Emily leans over the table and kisses Edith.
Luxor, Egypt, April, 1942
Edith has to duck to enter the tomb. Emily doubts the Ancient Egyptians ever planned for a five foot ten English woman entering the resting place of Nefertari.
Emily would normally make a crack about it, but she’s too transfixed by the ceiling alone. It’s painted a deep blue with golden stars. Her eyes wander to the wall paintings of the dead queen journeying to the afterlife. She’d only seen hieroglyphics as the plain carvings on exposed temples. She never imagined what they’d look like painted.
“Marvelous, isn’t it,” Edith says in a hushed voice.
It seems wrong to speak any louder. It feels more sacred than any church she’s been in.
Quietly, they go around the tomb. Edith studied this stuff at Oxford, and she gives a running commentary on the images and even reads some of the carvings.
They frequently brush up against each other. Stand close. Whisper to each other.
“And this is Hathor blessing Nefertari,” Edith says when they get to a painting on a pillar, “Hathor’s the one with the cow horns and sun disk.”
She nods. It looks like the queen and the goddess are holding hands. The blessing, Hathor placing the ankh on Nefertari's lips, is rather intimate. There’s something gentle about the Ancient Egyptian afterlife. More comforting than the Calvinistic dogma of her youth.
Election never sat well with her.
She feels Edith’s hand brush against hers. Emily is still astonished that someone like Edith would give her the time of day. Let alone invite her down to Luxor with her.
“Em, dear,” Edith says, gently touching her hand without taking it. “You can tell me off if I’m wrong, but I really like you. A lot.”
The room smells of dust, kerosene lamps, and the jasmine oil Edith daubs behind her ears. The caress of Edith’s fingers on her palm sends Emily’s heart racing and raising the heat in her cheeks.
“I like you, too,” she replies, not knowing what else to say. She was more than happy to have Edith as a friend.
“I know…” she stops and sucks in a breath. Emily looks up at her and is surprised by the worried look on her (in Emily’s opinion) angelic face. “It’s just I want to know… “
“Look now,” Emily says, taking Edith’s hand and turns so they’re facing each other. She takes the other hand, stares up at her and says, “I think I don’t just like you, Edith. I think I love you. And I know for damn sure I’ve been wanting to kiss you since I met you.”
“Thank God!” Edith says. She bends down and Emily stands on her toes and before the image of Hathor and Nefertari, they share their first real kiss.
Gorgon Island
They get ready for bed. Wash faces, brush teeth, the usual routine. Emily goes to check on Sabrina. The baby’s peacefully asleep in her cot. Her hair is dark brown, soft, and downy. Her little hands balled up into fists. Emily wonders what Sabrina dreams of; the sort of adventures she goes on. Hopefully it’s nothing harrowing. She had a rough entry into the world and Emily owes her daughter a happy future.
Edith comes up from behind, wrapping her arms about Emily’s waist.
“She’s such a sweet little thing,” Edith says. She adores Sabrina and that has been such a comfort to Emily. She’s been so happy these past few months she sometimes worries that she’ll wake one day and find it’s all been a dream.
“Em, don’t worry,” Edith whispers in her ear. “Bree will be here in the morning.”
“I know,” Emily sighs. She runs a finger over a soft cheek. She knows exactly what she would do if something happened. “Doesn’t mean I don’t think about it.”
Edith turns Emily around in her arms, cupping her face. “Emily, you are a wonderful mother. And no harm will ever come to Sabrina while she’s here.” Edith kissed her forehead.
“We’re safer now,” Emily breathes out, leaning on Edith. “You make me feel safe.”
Yugoslavia, January, 1945
Emily is awoken by the sun. The room is so bright. Her vision unfocused. Head swimming and body aching. She’s so disoriented. She doesn’t know where she is. She can barely move.
She needs to get up.
She needs to leave.
Where am I? Why can’t I move my arm?
“Em! Emily, wake up. I’m here.”
There’s a hand on her cheek. Her vision focuses. Hovering above her is Edith. Her auburn is disheveled, falling into her face. Her blue eyes are wide with fear and happiness. Her face is both tired and elated.
“You’re alright. You’re safe, love,” Edith says, tears welling at the corners of her eyes.
Emily tries to speak, but it feels like there’s cotton in her mouth. Edith takes the que and pours her a cup of water. She’s so weak she needs help sitting up. She needs help to drink.
When she’s gathered more of herself, Emily looks down at her arm, bound closely to her body in a sling. She can feel bandages around her shoulder and chest. It dawns on her what happened.
He finally got her.
He won.
Her mind reels. She feels sick. She feels helpless, violated. Dirty.
The tears come and she shatters once more. Everything’s gone to pieces. Emily’s fallen to pieces.
“Emily,” Edith says, holding her hand. “Emily, look at me.”
She takes several shuddering breaths before looking up at Edith. She’s crying, too.
“Nothing’s going to be the same. But you are here. You are safe. And you’re alive. That’s all that matters right now. We’ll be alright.”
Together they weep and mourn what’s happened. Desperately, Emily grasps that lifeline. Desperately, she clings to Edith.
Gorgon Island
“I should have listened to you,” Emily whispers in the dark. She’s far more restless now - used to fall asleep quickly and then slept like a stone for the rest of the night - and Edith seems a little restless, too.
“‘Bout what?” she murmurs back.
“That we’d be alright. Took me too long to realize that.”
They turn to face each other in bed. It’s dark and quiet. Outside is just the wind rustling grass and leaves.
Edith wraps her arms around Emily’s shoulders and they lay together, head to toe.
“If there’s one thing I know is that you’d always come back.” Edith says. “You just needed to figure that out on your own.”
“Even if it took me a hundred years?”
“I’d wait for you forever.”
They kiss and hold onto one another. They were together now, and nothing would change that.
Holland Park, London, United Kingdom, November 1950
The trip back to London was abysmal. Nothing but dark, overcast skies and heavy rain from Paris to Calais. The Channel was rough and the train to London was surprisingly crowded. Edith did bring some treasure back from this excursion. More books for the Service’s occult library. And it was surprisingly sunny when she got back to London.
But first, Edith checks in with Maddie and Robby.
She opens the door and is greeted first by the bloodhound, Jasper, with a loving amount of baying and slobber. He’s followed by the twins - Robin and Pippa - excited shouts of “Missy!” (they had trouble with “Miss Edith”) as they ran from the parlour.
“Hello my darlings!” Edith calls as she’s met with the cacophony of excited children and dog. She is swept into the parlour by the twins, wanting to show her something as little children are want to do.
And her heart stops.
Sitting on one of Maddie’s expensive settees is a ghost Edith clung to. One who’s haunting she never wanted to leave. For nearly five years, all she had wished and prayed for above all else, was for Emily to come back.
And here Emily sat, her hazel eyes wide, her hair ablaze in the late afternoon sun. Angel isn’t the right word, but this feels like a miracle.
Edith crosses the room and Emily rises and before either of them can speak they fall into a fierce hug. It’s been so long. There were times when Edith wanted to give up. There were times when she wanted to lose hope.
“I’m sorry,” Emily whispers into Edith’s shoulder between sobs. “I’m so sorry.”
“You’re here, love. That’s all that matters.”
Gorgon Island, 14 February 1952
Watching from the porch, Emily observes Edith holding Sabrina, showing their daughter all the flowers and insects in the garden.
On a notepad, Emily writes a list.
Five things I am thankful for
That Edith and I met
That we found love
Sabrina
We have a home
Edith never gave up

QUOTE OF THE WEEK 14/11/22 - MICHAEL ROSEN (AND 'THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK' AND 'THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE - AGED 13 AND 3/4')
‘Since you took us into that attic space

no room under the eaves has been the same.
Wherever we go – our homes or others’ -
whenever we dip and duck under beams

you are in the shadows, writing pages
laughing, crying, eating, daring to love
imagining a better world than yours.
How you wrote leads us to think we know you.
You compressed so much life into that loft
which we pore over and love you for it
yet the real world – not the one you imagined –

didn’t allow you to live and write any more.

Each time we read, we struggle to enjoy

your love of life while knowing how it ended.’ (Rosen in Shaffi, 2022).

Its somewhat ironic that a movie about time travel can’t be reviewed properly until your future self rewatches the movie. It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. This movie makes the chronology of Inception look as simplistic as tic-tac-toe. Ergo, it’s hard for me to give an accurate rating, without having seen it twice, as I’m still trying to figure out whether everything does indeed make sense. If it does, this movie is easily a 9 or 10. If it doesn’t, it’s a 6. It’s further not helped by the fact that the dialogue in the first 15 minutes of the movie is painfully hard to understand / hear. Either they were behind masks; they were practically mumbling; the sound effects were too loud; or all of the above. The exposition scenes are also waayyy too brief for something this complex — a problem also shared with Interstellar actually. (Interstellar had this minimalist exposition problem explaining Blight, where if you weren’t careful, you’d miss this one sentence / scene in the entire movie explaining that Blight was a viral bacteria: “Earth’s atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, we don’t even breathe nitrogen. Blight does, and as it thrives, our air gets less and less oxygen”). I guess it’s a Nolan quirk. Hopefully, a revision of the film audio sorts the sound mixing out. I do like the soundtrack, but it’s too loud initially. I liked all the actors. You think John Washington can’t act at first, but he can, and he grows on you as the film progresses. And Pattinson is his usual charming self. Elizabeth is a surprise treat. And so on. Its worth a watch either way. See it with subtitles if you can. And definitely don’t expect to fully understand whats going on the first time around. Its one hell of a complicated film. It will be very hard for an average viewer to gather all the information provided by this movie at the first watch. But the more you watch it, more hidden elements will come to light. And when you are able to put these hidden elements together. You will realize that this movie is just a “masterpiece” which takes the legacy of Christopher Nolan Forward If I talk about acting, Then I have to say that Robert Pattinson has really proved himself as a very good actor in these recent years. And I am sure his acting skills will increase with time. His performance is charming and very smooth. Whenever he is on the camera, he steals the focus John David Washington is also fantastic in this movie. His performance is electrifying, I hope to see more from him in the future. Other characters such as Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth, Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy have also done quite well. And I dont think there is a need to talk about Michael Caine Talking about Music, its awesome. I dont think you will miss Hans Zimmer’s score. Ludwig has done a sufficient job. There is no lack of good score in the movie Gotta love the editing and post production which has been put into this movie. I think its fair to say this Nolan film has focused more in its post production. The main problem in the movie is the sound mixing. Plot is already complex and some dialogues are very soft due to the high music score. It makes it harder to realize what is going on in the movie. Other Nolan movies had loud BGM too. But Audio and dialogues weren’t a problem My humble request to everyone is to please let the movie sink in your thoughts. Let your mind grasp all the elements of this movie. I am sure more people will find it better. Even those who think they got the plot. I can bet they are wrong. ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. The movie that’s set to reboot the multiplexes post-Covid. It’s a manic, extremely loud, extremely baffling sci-fi cum spy rollercoaster that will please a lot of Nolan fan-boys but which left me with very mixed views. John David Washington (Denzel’s lad) plays “The Protagonist” — a crack-CIA field operative who is an unstoppable one-man army in the style of Hobbs or Shaw. Recruited into an even more shadowy organisation, he’s on the trail of an international arms dealer, Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh in full villain mode). Sator is bullying his estranged wife Kat (Elizabeth Debicki) over custody of their son (and the film unusually has a BBFC warning about “Domestic Abuse”). Our hero jets the world to try to prevent a very particular kind of Armageddon while also keeping the vulnerable and attractive Kat alive. This is cinema at its biggest and boldest. Nolan has taken a cinema ‘splurge’ gun, filled it with money, set it on rapid fire, removed the safety and let rip at the screen. Given that Nolan is famous for doing all of his ‘effects’ for real and ‘in camera’, some of what you see performed is almost unbelievable. You thought crashing a train through rush-hour traffic in “Inception” was crazy? You ain’t seen nothing yet with the airport scene! And for lovers of Chinooks (I must admit I am one and rush out of the house to see one if I hear it coming!) there is positively Chinook-p*rn on offer in the film’s ridiculously huge finale. The ‘inversion’ aspects of the story also lends itself to some fight scenes — one in particular in an airport ‘freeport’ — which are both bizarre to watch and, I imagine, technically extremely challenging to pull off. In this regard John David Washington is an acrobatic and talented stunt performer in his own right, and must have trained for months for this role. Nolan’s crew also certainly racked up their air miles pre-lockdown, since the locations range far and wide across the world. The locations encompassed Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and United States. Hoyte Van Hoytema’s cinematography is lush in introducing these, especially the beautiful Italian coast scenes. Although I did miss the David Arnold strings that would typically introduce these in a Bond movie: it felt like that was missing. The ‘timey-wimey’ aspects of the plot are also intriguing and very cleverly done. There are numerous points at which you think “Oh, that’s a sloppy continuity error” or “Shame the production design team missed that cracked wing mirror”. Then later in the movie, you get at least a dozen “Aha!” moments. Some of them (no spoilers) are jaw-droppingly spectacular. Perhaps the best twist is hidden in the final line of the movie. I only processed it on the way home. And so to the first of my significant gripes with ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án. The sound mix in the movie is all over the place. I’d go stronger than that… it’s truly awful (expletive deleted)! Nolan often implements Shakespeare’s trick of having characters in the play provide exposition of the plot to aid comprehension. But unfortunately, all of this exposition dialogue was largely incomprehensible. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2021 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  ánis’! (LOL); the dialogue is poorly mixed with the thumping music by Ludwig Göransson (Wot? No Hans Zimmer?); a large proportion of the dialogue was through masks of varying description (#covid-appropriate). Aaron Taylor-Johnson was particularly unintelligible to my ears. Overall, watching this with subtitles at a special showing might be advisable! OK, so I only have a PhD in Physics… but at times I was completely lost as to the intricacies of the plot. It made “Inception” look like “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. There was an obvious ‘McGuffin’ in “Inception” — — (“These ‘dream levels’… how exactly are they architected??”…. “Don’t worry… they’ll never notice”. And we didn’t!) In “~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. So much of this is casually waved away as “future stuff… you’re not qualified” that it feels vaguely condescending to the audience. At one point Sator says to Kat “You don’t know what’s going on, do you?” and she shakes her head blankly. We’re right with you there luv! There are also gaps in the storyline that jar. The word “~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. For me, it has none of the emotional heart of the Cobb’s marriage problems from “Inception” or the father/daughter separation of “Interstellar”. In fact, you barely care for anyone in the movie, perhaps with the exception of Kat. It’s a talented cast. As mentioned above, John David Washington is muscular and athletic in the role. It’s a big load for the actor to carry in such a tent-pole movie, given his only significant starring role before was in the excellent BlacKkKlansman. But he carries it off well. A worthy successor to Gerard Butler and Jason Statham for action roles in the next 10 years. This is also a great performance by Robert Pattinson, in his most high-profile film in a long time, playing the vaguely alcoholic and Carré-esque support guy. Pattinson’s Potter co-star Clemence Poésy also pops up — rather more un-glam that usual — as the scientist plot-expositor early in the movie. Nolan’s regular Michael Caine also pops up. although the 87-year old legend is starting to show his age: His speech was obviously affected at the time of filming (though nice try Mr Nolan in trying to disguise that with a mouth full of food!). But in my book, any amount of Caine in a movie is a plus. He also gets to deliver the best killer line in the film about snobbery! However, it’s Kenneth Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki that really stand out. They were both fabulous, especially when they were bouncing off each other in their marital battle royale. So, given this was my most anticipated movie of the year, it’s a bit of a curate’s egg for me. A mixture of being awe-struck at times and slightly disappointed at others. It’s a movie which needs a second watch, so I’m heading back today to give my ear drums another bashing! And this is one where I reserve the right to revisit my rating after that second watch… it’s not likely to go down… but it might go up. (For the full graphical review, check out One Mann’s Movies on t’interweb and Facebook. Thanks.) As this will be non-spoiler, I can’t say too much about the story. However, what I can is this: ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. Acting is beyond phenomenal, and I’d be genuinely surprised if neither Robert Pattinson nor John David Washington doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for best actor. It’s also hard not to mention how good Elizabeth Debicki and Aaron Johnson both are. All around, great acting, and the dialogue amps up the quality of the movie. The idea of this movie is damn fascinating, and while there are films that explore time-travelling, there’s never been anything quite like this. It has such a beautiful charm and for the most part, explains everything thoroughly. It feels so much more complex than any form of time-travelling we’ve seen, and no less could’ve been expected from Nolan. Oh my lord, the score for this film fits so perfectly. Every scene that’s meant to feel intense was amped by a hundred because of how good the score was. Let me just say though, none of them will be found iconic, but they fit the story and scenes so well. In the end, I walked out, feeling very satisfied. Nevertheless, I do have issues with the film that I cannot really express without spoiling bits of the story. There are definitely little inconsistencies that I found myself uncovering as the story progressed. However, I only had one issue that I found impacted my enjoyment. That issue was understanding some of the dialogue. No, not in the sense that the movie is too complicated, but more that it was hard to make out was being said at times. It felt like the movie required subtitles, but that probably was because, at a time in the film, there was far too much exposition. Nevertheless, I loved this film, I’ll be watching it at least two more times, and I think most of you in this group will enjoy it. I definitely suggest watching it in theatres if possible, just so you can get that excitement. (4/5) & (8.5/10) for those that care about number scores. At first, I want to ask Christopher Nolan one question, HOW THE HELL YOU DID THIS? Seriously I want to have an answer, How did he write such as this masterpiece! How did he get this complicated, fabulous and creative idea? What is going on in his mind? The story is written and directed perfectly, the narration style was absolutely unique. I have no idea how can anyone direct such as this story, that was a huge challenge, and as usual Nolan gave us a masterpiece that we’ll put beside (Memento), (Inception) and (Interstellar) The movie is so fast-paced in a good way, there was no boring moment. The chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattinson was great and funny and both of their performance was really good. Elizabeth Debicki performance was the best in the movie because she had the chance to show her acting abilities and she cached up that chance and showed us an A level acting. The music wasn’t unique and distinct as the music of Interstellar for example and I think this movie needed the touch of Hans Zimmer, I’m not saying that Ludwig Göransson failed but Hans Zimmer in another level. If there was something I’d say that I didn’t like it in the movie would it be that Nolan discarded any set up or characters backgrounds except Elizabeth Debicki dramatic story but it wasn’t that bad for me, I didn’t care about that, the exciting story didn’t give me the chance to focus on it. But the actual problem was the third act, it was really complicated and I got lost and I convinced myself to discard the questions that were in my head and enjoy the well-made action sequences and Elizabeth Debicki performance. I think this kind of movie that gets better with a second and third watch. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). ~After nearly three hours, I came away from ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. Was there time travel involved? Hmm, there was definitely something about time inversion. I mean, does Nolan even understand what he wrote? Look, I give credit to the director because he’s one of the few directors left who knows how to create a compelling and intelligent blockbuster. ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án is full of Nolan trademarks — the gratuitous Michael Caine cameo, a loud, really loud score, complete with stunning cinematography and slickly inventive action set-pieces. This time around however, Nolan has finally managed to ‘out-Nolan’ himself: the palindromic plot, whilst creatively ambitious, is simply far too complicated for its own good. ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án is overlong, overstuffed, pretentious and too exhausting to comprehend in its entirety — it makes Inception and Interstellar look like Peppa Pig by comparison. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. For those who want a puzzle, ~F9: The Fast Saga  [ Halálos iramban 9 ] 2021  án at least provides a unique cinematic experience. But to actually enjoy solving it Nolan wants you to work very very hard

Things that I find both beautiful and sad:
Not that I imagine fictional characters in my everyday life. How I imagine fictional characters in my everyday life. I don’t imagine swordfights or high adventure, I imagine Dean Winchester telling me I can make it through the day, I imagine Jim Kirk putting a blanket over my shoulders and bringing me coffee when I’m up late writing a paper that I procrastinated too long on. Like yeah adventure is nice, but what about normal fucking human interactions? What about watching classic movies with Bucky Barnes? Or trading quippy advice with Michael Townsend? What if when my asthma acts up, Dr. McCoy griped at me, or Castiel frowned, while fixing it instead of me just having to settle down for the day? What if when I feel like a failure, Sherlock Holmes or Spock calmly stated my worth and past accomplishments like a fact because that’s the only way they know how? What if Steve Rodgers or John Watson told me they were proud of me at the end of a hard day?
I feel like this is why I can’t seem to pick up new books like I used to. I used to look for the excitement, the adventure, the huge tomes that would drop me into a completely different world where I could loose myself in the magic and the idea that I at nine, or twelve, or fifteen, could save the world. Now I just want someone else to save the world and to get to make them food and pet their hair while they reconcile that. But adventure sells and I don’t really have the emotional space to meet new characters. I want for my old friends to never have left.

seb townsend?
i am going to assume you meant either seb or mike and this was a mistake, or possibly you do not know blaseball and have successfully reverse-engineered these two names from my posts without realizing that it is two characters. but i am stalling homework so you will get both characters. tossing under a cut just bc it’s long as hell
sebastian telephone
favorite thing about them
he’s a NICE BOY... he’s very excited and cool and happy to be here and he’s just like. the kind of person you enjoy spending time around
least favorite thing about them
fucked up that he died twice. that shouldn’t happen
favorite moment
i actually do not know enough about steaks lore/etc to have one although i will say the moment in hall stars where he got incinerated again was one of the most devastating things i have ever experienced
brOTP
jess obviously and i especially think we as a fandom need to zoom in more on the fact that the seb telephone from season 4 on is from another dimension because can you imagine being jess telephone and spending your whole life with your brother weaker than you and relying on you and then one day he’s replaced by someone who’s almost exactly the same but not quite. i think that would be horrible. also it’s fucked up that he was never on the team at the same time as allison because i feel like they could be a really good “someone will die” “of fun!” pair
OTP
townseb because it’s the world’s saddest concept. you know what the timeline is like? sebastian gets reality-swapped in the season 4 elections. that means they get two seasons where they can spend time together, and then mike is in the shadows and seb gets incinerated about three months later. and then mike is out of the shadows during hall stars, and then seb gets incinerated again instead of getting released. it’s all about the timing and the almost-maybe-what-if of it all it’s about the stars never quite aligning but they keep trying anyways
nOTP
i don’t really have one? i mean i’m no expert but i have seen seb/conner haley and i would love for someone to like. explain that to me. because based on my knowledge level (ie wiki pages) i don’t get it
random headcanon
he’s actually a really good cook? like not a Professional Chef but makes a mean carbonara, that kind of a thing.
unpopular opinion
i see him listed as one of the “Main Characters Of Blaseball” a whole bunch and it’s like. he’s not. it’s nice that you think he is but i disagree with you. (i mean also i think part of the fun of blaseball is there are no Main Characters other than, like, jaylen and jess and maybe landry, but i digress)
song i associate with them
i truly don’t know but cola made a townseb playlist and i have been thinking about parallel universe by clara benin for a week now so i’m going with that
favorite picture of them
i don’t know about “favorite” but this made me cry for like five minutes the other day so it’s top of mind

mike townsend
favorite thing about them
mike townsend is the kind of guy who will help you move into your new apartment. not because you’re, like, friends with him, but because you needed an extra pair of hands and he’s around. he’s genuinely just happy to be here. he’s just like... a fundamentally decent person.
least favorite thing about them
he’s such a fucking pushover. grow a spine michael
favorite moment
the first time he retreated into the shadows and absolutely nobody knew what to do or how to handle it. also this is less of a moment and more just a thing i enjoy but i think it’s SO funny that there’s lore about how he can strike out jessica telephone. like that’s the one thing he can do and that rules
brOTP
i know a lot of people go in for mike/jaylen as good friends and i think that’s very good, and i enjoy mike and lenny a lot. but i am here to make the case for allison abbott, who always kind of pushed him around (as a joke) and took him for granted (he’s a very nice guy) and then suddenly he was gone? and oh shit it feels kind of mean that they kept calling him a disappointment and a fuck-up and making jokes about how bad he was? and as soon as mike was out of the shadows she called him and was like. hey i was kind of a dick to you and i think it was in a bad way, can we try and be better friends now
OTP
once again i love townseb, and i think tillsend is pretty good, but i think like... okay. i was trying to explain to someone recently that part of the appeal of tillman/mike/declan is that they are all kind of dirtbags but they are different kind of dirtbags. but also i think mike/declan are very compatible dirtbags and it’s a truly underrated dynamic
nOTP
mmmmm not sure i think you could sell me on a lot of ships with mike in them. although i do think he’s gay as hell
random headcanon
only drinks coffee because everyone else does. if he’s left to his own devices this man has two modes and they’re water and red bull
unpopular opinion
i think he should be allowed to be mad at jaylen? like not necessarily Bitter Enemies or anything but i think there is a little bit of tension inherent to that relationship like. speaking personally if i gave up my life and existence for someone and then that person killed a bunch of people and scattered my friends across the country, i might have a hard time picking up a normal friendly relationship with them
song i associate with them
i mean all the garages songs. is that a copout
favorite picture of them
i am incredibly fond of this art of mike and jaylen

It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see ~Halálos iramban 9 more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. ~Halálos iramban 9 is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. And so to the first of my significant gripes with ~Halálos iramban 9. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2021 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘~Halálos iramban 9is’! And we didn’t!) In “~Halálos iramban 9” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. The word “~Halálos iramban 9”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of ~Halálos iramban 9 and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. However, what I can is this: ~Halálos iramban 9’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that ~Halálos iramban 9 invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with ~Halálos iramban 9. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). ~After nearly three hours, I came away from ~Halálos iramban 9 not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. Ibrahima & Abdoulaye Barry Written by Deborah BachAudio by Sara Lerner
How a new alphabet is helping an ancient people write its own future
When they were 10 and 14, brothers Abdoulaye and Ibrahima Barry set out to invent an alphabet for their native language, Fulfulde, which had been spoken by millions of people for centuries but never had its own writing system. While their friends were out playing in the neighborhood, Ibrahima, the older brother, and Abdoulaye would shut themselves in their room in the family’s house in Nzérékoré, Guinea, close their eyes and draw shapes on paper.
When one of them called stop they’d open their eyes, choose the shapes they liked and decide what sound of the language they matched best. Before long, they’d created a writing system that eventually became known as ADLaM.
The brothers couldn’t have known the challenges that lay ahead. They couldn’t have imagined the decades-long journey to bring their writing system into widespread use, one that would eventually lead them to Microsoft. They wouldn’t have dreamed that the script they invented would change lives and open the door to literacy for millions of people around the world.
They didn’t know any of that back in 1989. They were just two kids with a naïve sense of purpose.
“We just wanted people to be able to write correctly in their own language, but we didn’t know what that meant. We didn’t know how much work it would be,” said Abdoulaye Barry, now 39 and living in Portland, Oregon.
“If we knew everything we would have to go through, I don’t think we would have done it.”
ADLaM is an acronym that translates to 'the alphabet that will prevent a people from being lost.'
A new writing system takes shape
The Fulbhe, or Fulani, people were originally nomadic pastoralists who dispersed across West Africa, settling in countries stretching from Sudan to Senegal and along the coast of the Red Sea. More than 40 million people speak Fulfulde — some estimates put the number at between 50 and 60 million — in around 20 African countries. But the Fulbhe people never developed a script for their language, instead using Arabic and sometimes Latin characters to write in their native tongue, also known as Fulani, Pular and Fula. Many sounds in Fulfulde can’t be represented by either alphabet, so Fulfulde speakers improvised as they wrote, with varying results that often led to muddled communications.
The Barry brothers’ father, Isshaga Barry, who knew Arabic, would decipher letters for friends and family who brought them to the house. When he was busy or tired, young Abdoulaye and Ibrahima would help out.
“They were very hard to read, those letters,” Abdoulaye recalled. “People would use the most approximate Arabic sound to represent a sound that doesn’t exist in Arabic. You had to be somebody who knows how to read Arabic letters well and also knows the Fulfulde language to be able to decipher those letters.”
Abdoulaye asked his father why their people didn’t have their own writing system. Isshaga replied that the only alphabet they had was Arabic, and Abdoulaye promised to create one for Fulfulde.
“At a basic level, that’s how the whole idea of ADLaM started,” Abdoulaye said. “We saw that there was a need for something and we thought maybe we could fix it.”
The brothers developed an alphabet with 28 letters and 10 numerals written right to left, later adding six more letters for other African languages and borrowed words. They first taught it to their younger sister, then began teaching people at local markets, asking each student to teach at least three more people. They transcribed books and produced their own handwritten books and pamphlets in ADLaM, focusing on practical topics such as infant care and water filtration.
While attending university in Conakry, Guinea’s capital city, the brothers started a group called Winden Jangen — Fulfulde for “writing and reading” — and continued developing ADLaM. Abdoulaye left Guinea in 2003, moving to Portland with his wife and studying finance. Ibrahima stayed behind, completing a civil engineering degree, and continued working on ADLaM. He wrote more books and started a newspaper, translating news stories from the radio and television from French to Fulfulde. Isshaga, a shopkeeper, photocopied the newspapers and Ibrahima handed them out to Fulbhe people, who were so grateful they sometimes wept.
But not everyone was pleased by the brothers’ work. Some objected to their efforts to spread ADLaM, saying Fulbhe people should learn French, English or Arabic instead. In 2002, military officers raided a Winden Jangen meeting, arrested Ibrahima and imprisoned him for three months. He was not charged with anything or ever told why he was arrested, Abdoulaye said. Undeterred, Ibrahima moved to Portland in 2007 and continued writing books while studying civil engineering and mathematics.
ADLaM, meanwhile, was spreading beyond Guinea. A palm oil dealer, a woman the brothers’ mother knew, was teaching ADLaM to people in Senegal, Gambia and Sierra Leone. A man from Senegal told Ibrahima that after learning ADLaM, he felt so strongly about the need to share what he’d learned that he left his auto repair business behind and went to Nigeria and Ghana to teach others.
“He said, ‘This is changing people’s lives,’” said Ibrahima, now 43. “We realized this is something people want.”
ADLaM comes online
The brothers also understood that to fully tap ADLaM’s potential, they needed to get it onto computers. They made inquiries about getting ADLaM encoded in Unicode, the global computing industry standard for text, but got no response. After working and saving for close to a year, the brothers had enough money to hire a Seattle company to create a keyboard and font for ADLaM. Since their script wasn’t supported by Unicode, they layered it on top of the Arabic alphabet. But without the encoding, any text they typed just came through as random groupings of Arabic letters unless the recipients had the font installed on their computers.
Following that setback, Ibrahima made a fateful decision. Wanting to refine the letters the Seattle font designer developed, which he wasn’t happy with, he enrolled in a calligraphy class at Portland Community College. The instructor, Rebecca Wild, asked students at the start of each course why they were taking her class. Some needed an art credit; others wanted to decorate cakes or become tattoo artists. The explanation from the quiet African man with the French accent stunned Wild.
“It was mind-blowing when I heard the story of why he was doing this,” said Wild, who lives in Port Townsend, Washington. “It’s so remarkable. I think they deserve a Nobel Peace Prize for what they’re doing. What a difference they’ve made on this planet, and they’re these two humble brothers.”
Wild was struck by Ibrahima’s focus and assiduousness in class. “He was always a star student,” she said. “He had this skill set and unending patience. He worked and worked and worked in class on the assignments, but at the same time, he was taking all this stuff he was learning in class back to ADLaM.”
Wild helped Ibrahima get a scholarship to a calligraphy conference at Reed College in Portland, where he met Randall Hasson, a calligraphy artist and painter. Hasson was seated at a table one afternoon, giving a lettering demonstration with another instructor, and Ibrahima came over. A book about African alphabets rested on the table. Ibrahima picked it up, commented that the scripts in the book weren’t the only African alphabets and offhandedly mentioned that he and his brother had invented an alphabet.
Hasson, who has extensively researched ancient alphabets, assumed Ibrahima meant that he and his brother had somehow modified an alphabet.
“I said, ‘You mean you adapted an alphabet?’” Hasson recalled. “I had to ask him three times to be sure he had actually invented one.”
After hearing Ibrahima’s story, Hasson suggested teaming up for a talk on ADLaM at a calligraphy conference in Colorado the following year. The audience sat rapt as Hasson told Ibrahima’s story, giving him a standing ovation as he walked to the stage. During a break earlier in the day, Ibrahima asked Hasson to come and meet a few people. They were four Fulbhe men who had driven almost 1,800 miles from New York just to hear Ibrahima’s talk, hoping it would finally help get ADLaM the connections they sought.
Hasson was so moved after speaking with them that he walked away, sat down in an empty stairwell and cried.
“At that moment,” he said, “I began to understand how important this talk was to these people.”
Ibrahima made connections at the conference that got him introduced to Michael Everson, one of the editors of the Unicode Standard. It was the break the brothers needed. With help from Everson, Ibrahima and Abdoulaye put together a proposal for ADLaM to be added to Unicode.
Andrew Glass is a senior program manager at Microsoft who works on font and keyboard technology and provides expertise to the Unicode Technical Committee. The ADLaM proposal and the Barry brothers’ pending visit to the Unicode Consortium generated much interest and excitement among Glass and other committee members, most of whom have linguistics backgrounds. Glass’s graduate studies focused on writing systems that are around 2,000 years old, and like other linguists he uses a methodological, technical approach to analyze and understand writing systems.
But here were two brothers with no training in linguistics, who developed an alphabet through a natural, organic approach — and when they were children, no less. New writing systems aren’t created very often, and the chance to actually talk with the inventors of one was rare.
“You come across things in these old writing systems and you wonder why it’s the way it is, and there’s nobody to ask,” Glass said. “This was a unique opportunity to say, ‘Why is it like this? Did they think about doing things differently? Why are the letters ordered this way?’ and things like that.”
Microsoft worked with designers to develop a font for Windows and Office called Ebrima that supports ADLaM and several other African writing systems.
It was during the Unicode process that ADLaM got its new name. The brothers originally called their alphabet Bindi Pular, meaning “Pular script,” but had always wanted a more meaningful name. Some people in Guinea who’d been teaching the script suggested ADLaM, an acronym using the first four letters of the script for a phrase that translates to “the alphabet that will prevent a people from being lost.” The Unicode Technical Committee approved ADLaM in 2014 and the alphabet was included in Unicode 9.0, released in June 2016. The brothers were elated.
“It was very exciting for us,” Abdoulaye said. “Once we got encoded, we thought, ‘This is it.’”
But they soon realized there were other, possibly even more challenging hurdles ahead. For ADLaM to be usable on computers, it had to be supported on desktop and mobile operating systems, and with fonts and keyboards. To make it broadly accessible, it also needed to be integrated on social networking sites.
The brothers’ script found a champion in Glass, who had developed Windows keyboards for several languages and worked on supporting various writing systems in Microsoft technology. Glass told others at Microsoft about ADLaM and helped connect the Barry brothers to the right people at the company. He developed keyboard layouts for ADLaM, initially as a project during Microsoft’s annual companywide employee hackathon.
Judy Safran-Aasen, a program manager for Microsoft’s Windows design group, also saw the importance of incorporating ADLaM into Microsoft products. Safran-Aasen wrote a business plan for adding ADLaM to Windows and pushed the work forward with various Microsoft teams.
“It was a shoestring collaboration of a few people who were really interested in seeing this happen,” she said. “It’s a powerful human interest story, and if you tell the story you can get people onboard.
“This is going to have an impact on literacy throughout that community and enable people to be part of the Windows ecosystem, where before that just wasn’t available to them,” Safran-Aasen said. “I’m really excited that we can make this happen.”
ADLaM creators Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry in Portland, Oregon.
Microsoft worked with two type designers in Maine, Mark Jamra and Neil Patel, to develop an ADLaM component for Windows and Office within Microsoft’s existing Ebrima font, which also supports other African writing systems. ADLaM support is included in the Windows 10 May 2019 update, allowing users to type and see ADLaM in Windows, including in Word and other Office apps.
Microsoft’s support for ADLaM, Abdoulaye said, “is going to be a huge jump for us.”
ADLaM is also supported by the Kigelia typeface system developed by Jamra and Patel, which includes eight African scripts and is being added to Office later this year. The designers wanted to create a type system for a region of the world lacking in typeface development, where they say existing fonts tend to be oversimplified and poorly researched. They consulted extensively with Ibrahima and Abdoulaye to refine ADLaM’s forms, painstakingly working to execute on the brothers’ vision within the boundaries of font technology.
“This was their life’s work that they started when they were kids,” Patel said. “To get it right is a big deal.”
And to many Africans, Jamra said, a script is more than just an alphabet. ”These writing systems are cultural icons,” he said. “It’s not like the Latin script. They really are symbols of ethnic identity for many of these communities.”
They’re also a means of preserving and advancing a culture. Without a writing system it’s difficult for people to record their history, to share perspective and knowledge across generations, even to engage in the basic communications that facilitate commerce and daily activities. There is greater interest in recent years in establishing writing systems for languages that didn’t have them, Glass said, to help ensure those languages remain relevant and don’t disappear. He pointed to the Osage script, created by an elder in 2006 to preserve and revitalize the language, as an example.
“There is a big push among language communities to develop writing systems,” Glass said. “And when they get them, they are such a powerful tool to put identity around that community, and also empower that community to learn and become educated.
“I think ADLaM has tremendous potential to change circumstances and improve people’s lives. That’s one of the things that’s really exciting about this.”
Keeping a culture alive
Ibrahima and Abdoulaye don’t know how many people around the world have learned ADLaM. It could be hundreds of thousands, maybe more. As many as 24 countries have been represented at ADLaM’s annual conference in Guinea, and there are ADLaM learning centers in Africa, Europe and the U.S. On a recent trip to Brussels, Ibrahima discovered that four learning centers had opened there and others have started in the Netherlands.
“I was really surprised. I couldn’t imagine that ADLaM has reached so many people outside of Africa,” he said.
Abdoulaye “Bobody” Barry (no relation to ADLaM’s creator) lives in Harlem, New York and is part of Winden Jangen, now a nonprofit organization based in New York City. He learned ADLaM a decade ago and has taught it to hundreds of people, first at mosques and then through messaging applications using an Android app. The script has enabled Fulbhe people, many of whom never learned to read and write in English or French, to connect around the world and has fostered a sense of sense of cultural pride, Barry said.
“This is part of our blood. It came from our culture,” he said. “This is not from the French people or the Arabic people. This is ours. This is our culture. That’s why people get so excited.”
Suwadu Jallow emigrated to the U.S. from Gambia in 2012 and took an ADLaM class the Barry brothers taught at Portland Community College. ADLaM is easy for Fulfulde speakers to learn, she said, and will help sustain the language, particularly among the African diaspora.
“Now I can teach this language to someone and have the sense of my tribe being here for years and years to come without the language dying off,” said Jallow, who lives in Seattle. “Having this writing system, you can teach kids how to speak (Fulfulde) just like you teach them to speak English. It will help preserve the language and let people be creative and innovative.”
Jallow is pursuing a master’s in accounting at the University of Washington and hopes to develop an inventory-tracking system in ADLaM after she graduates. She got the idea after helping out in her mother’s baby clothing shop in Gambia as a child and seeing that her mother, who understood little English and Arabic, could not properly record and track expenses. ADLaM, she said, can empower people like her mother who are fluent in Fulfulde and just need a way to write it.
“It’s going to increase literacy,” she said. “I believe knowledge is power, and if you’re able to read and write, that’s a very powerful tool to have. You can do a lot of things that you weren’t able to do.”
The Fulbhe people in Guinea historically produced a considerable volume of books and manuscripts, Abdoulaye Barry said, using Arabic to write in their language. Most households traditionally had a handwritten personal book detailing the family’s ancestry and the history of the Fulbhe people. But the books weren’t shared outside the home, and Fulbhe people largely stopped writing during French colonization, when the government mandated teaching in French and the use of Arabic was limited primarily to learning the Koran.
“Everything else was basically discounted and no longer had the value that it had before the French came,” Abdoulaye said.
Having ADLaM on phones and computers creates infinite possibilities — Fulbhe people around the world will be able to text each other, surf the internet, produce written materials in their own language. But even before ADLaM’s entry into the digital world, Fulfulde speakers in numerous countries have been using the script to write books. Ibrahima mentions a man in Guinea who never went to school and has written more than 30 books in ADLaM, and a high school girl, also in Guinea, who wrote a book about geography and another about how to succeed on exams. The president of Winden Jangen, Abdoulaye Barry (also no relation to Ibrahima’s brother), said many older Fulbhe people who weren’t formally educated are now writing about Fulbhe history and traditions.
“Now, everybody can read that and understand the culture,” he said. “The only way to keep a culture alive is if you read and write in your own language.”
‘The kids are the future’
Though ADLaM has spread over several continents, Ibrahima and Abdoulaye aren’t slowing down their work. Both spend much of their spare time promoting the script, traveling to conferences and continuing to write. Ibrahima, who sleeps a maximum of four hours a night, recently finished the first book of ADLaM grammar and hopes to build a learning academy in Guinea.
On a chilly recent day in Abdoulaye’s home in Portland, the brothers offer tea and patiently answer questions about ADLaM. They are unfailingly gracious, gamely agreeing to drive to a scenic spot on the Willamette River for photos after a long day of talking. They’re also quick to deflect praise for what they have accomplished. Ibrahima, who sometimes wakes up to hundreds of email and text messages from grateful ADLaM learners, said simply that he’s “very happy” with how the script has progressed. For his brother, the response to ADLaM can be overwhelming.
Having this writing system, you can teach kids how to speak Fulani just like you teach them to speak English. It will help preserve the language and let people be creative and innovative.
“It’s very emotional sometimes,” Abdoulaye said. “I feel like people are grateful beyond what we deserve.”
The brothers want ADLaM to be a tool for combating illiteracy, one as lasting and important to their people as the world’s most well-known alphabets are to cultures that use them. They have a particular goal of ADLaM being used to educate African women, who they said are more impacted by illiteracy than men and are typically the parent who teaches children to read.
“If we educate women we can help a lot of people in the community, because they are the foundation of our community,” Abdoulaye said. “I think ADLaM is the best way to educate people because they don’t need to learn a whole new language that’s only used at school. If we switched to this, it would make education a lot easier.”
That hasn’t happened yet, but ADLaM has fostered a grassroots learning movement fueled largely through social media. There are several ADLaM pages on Facebook, and groups with hundreds of members are learning together on messaging apps. Abdoulaye said he and Ibrahima used to hear mostly about adults learning ADLaM, but increasingly it’s now children. Those children will grow up with ADLaM, using the script Abdoulaye and Ibrahima invented all those years ago in their bedroom.
“That makes us believe ADLaM is going to live,” Abdoulaye said. “It’s now settled into the community because it’s in the kids, and the kids are the future.”

Awesome shows that were cancelled in the first season
Tumblr media
Night Stalker
A dark supernatural mystery/crime drama that stars Stuart Townsend and Gabrielle Union.
First episode aired Sept 2005 on ABC and was cancelled after episode 6. And let me tell you, that sucked, cause episode 6 was Part 1 of a two part episode that ended on a huge cliffhanger. Luckily they released all of the recorded episodes on DVD so you didn’t have to be stuck with the cliffhanger but it still didn’t wrap up the loose ends.
“Investigative reporter Carl Kolchak, who's after his wife's killer, Carl's partners Perri Reed and Jain McManus and their boss Tony Vincenzo investigate strange crimes in L.A. that may or may not have dark supernatural elements to them.“
I adore both Stuart Townsend and Gabrielle Union and was so sad when this was cancelled. I definitely own the complete series on DVD, only so that I could watch the end and mourn for what could have been.
Tumblr media
Raines
Crime drama starring Jeff Goldblum.
First episode aired March 2007 on NBC, last episode April 2007. That’s right. A genius show with the amazing Jeff Goldblum only lasted a month with seven episodes.
“Michael Raines, an eccentric but brilliant cop, solves murders in a very unusual way - he turns the victims into his partners. These visions are figments of Raines' imagination, and he knows it, but when he can't make the dead disappear, he works with them to find the killer. Through his discussions, along with the evidence, Raines' image of the victim changes until he has a clear picture of what really happened. Only when the case is closed do the visions end. Other detectives question Raines' sanity, and occasionally so does he. However, as long as his unique methods are helping catch criminals, Raines imagines he'll be just fine.”
This show was so so good and Jeff Goldblum was absolutely perfect for the role of an eccentric detective who talks to imaginary dead people to help solve their own murders. Really wish this hadn’t been dropped.
Tumblr media
Forever
Another crime drama with a supernatural twist (can you tell I like those?), starring Ioan Gruffudd.
First episode aired Sept 2014 on ABC, ended May 2015 with an actual full, complete first season, but was not picked up to continue.
“A 200-year-old man works in the New York City Morgue trying to find a key to unlock the curse of his immortality.
Short and sweet summary. Guy has no idea why he’s immortal and helps the police solve crimes as the ME while trying to find another man who knows his secret and is just as immortal as he is. Great great show. Ioan Gruffudd is amazing and while it’s great that this show at least got a full first season I’m sad it never got renewed.
Tumblr media
Almost Human
Crime drama but this time with a sci-fi twist (see I can like different things) starring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy.
First episode aired Nov 2013 on Fox and ended March 2014. It was a mid-season type show so the full first season only had 13 episodes.
“In a not-so-distant future, a human cop and an android partner up to protect and serve.“
This is like if Connor and Hank from Detroit: Become Human had a TV Show. Detective that hates androids is forced to partner with one in order to solve crime and android ends up being a bit more human than normal. Another amazing show that I wish was still on.
Tumblr media
Common Law
Hmmm do I even have to say it with this one? *cough*crime show*cough*. But this one’s a comedy! Stars Warren Kole and Michael Ealy(again. god please get a show that sticks around cause you deserve good things).
The full 12 episode first season aired in 2012 on USA Network.
“Centers on cops Wes Mitchell and Travis Marks, who have a problem, each other. So their captain sends them to couples therapy.“
Enough said. This is just a good light comedy with detective partners who argue and I love it.
-----------------------
There are so many more that I wish had more episodes. Even some that were more than one season like Tru Calling and Dollhouse (unf Eliza Dushku. just. please). Firefly does it even need to be mentioned  and absolute campy ridiculousness like the New Normal. There was a show called The Days with Evan Peters that I watched in high school that was just a terrible angsty drama and I loved it but it was not a good show lol
I obviously have a thing for crime shows but what other one season shows are there that you miss? I’m taking recommendations for new things to watch that will hurt me.

I'm imagining Foodie!Cap in some kind of American version of Back In Time For Tea, just so he could start sentences with "Back in the Depression we..." a lot.
Well, in this he’s just a dude with a food truck but he is also definitely a history nerd so he would still say “Back in the Depression we” AS IF HE HAD BEEN THERE.

Such a beautiful girl! Most important question if Tumblr goes tits up: where can we find ongoing kitten updates???
Well, if Tumblr straight up vanishes, Dreamwidth or Pillowfort are probably where I would start posting a bunch of kitten pictures, if for no other reason than to balm wounded survivors. But until Fandom has really made the true leap elsewhere, as long as Tumblr is around, the kitten photos will still be plentiful here (as a friend of mine said yesterday, “If Tumblr goes away I will lose my subscription to cute goth fashion!”).
And if that is going to change, I will post about where I’m going and why, so everyone will know.

-Jamahal Hill's last official fight was at a catchweight of 220 lbs, he was training to make a drop to middleweight first via a 195 lb catchweight and then a fight at 185 lbs but both fights fell apart. He's 1-0 vs current members of the UFC roster, finishing Daquan Townsend in 2018.
