In an unexpected announcement today, Google Domains is “winding down following a transition period,” with Squarespace taking over the business and assets.
Google cited “efforts to sharpen our focus” in selling the Google Domains registrar business, which launched in 2014 as a big proponent of HTTPS and top-level domains (TLDs) as of late. The service exited beta in 2022.

There was some teething errors with logging into the websites for the first two sessions but clearing our computer cache and history seemed to do the trick.

In other news, don't use Tumblr for professional shit. It was only a matter of time before Tumblr tried to get on the "price everyone small out of business" model of dying social media. They think they're a social media company. If you have work important enough for www.myimportantshit.com, make sure you host that shit somewhere stable that is specifically designed for web hosting. Even ripoff artists like Wix and Squarespace are better at this point. I'm sure part of the reason this is going down is that Google Domains sold out to Squarespace, indicating the domain servicing market is dying off. If they want to force everyone back to fuckin' GoDaddy and their shit standards, that's fine. Or, hell, basically any web host who will also manage your domain if you choose, as well as let you transfer in or out of their service with one. As much as I'd love to link a few solid options for people to migrate again, I'm not going to. There is not one service on the Internet that's perfect for every single use, and I don't want my notifs flooded with "but it's not free," "but you have to be able to code," "but they stick their branding on your free site," "but their CEO is a dick," "but they're dead, and no one uses them," or "but it's too hard to figure out." I've been playing this game for 25 fuckin' years at this point. I'm tired, and mostly I'm tired of seeing promising sites and services tank all of their work and their users' experiences chasing an IPO, market share, or advertiser revenue. You'll notice the terms "enshittification," "federation," "federated networks," and "end-to-end" come up frequently in these, so it's also worth searching them and reading from others (Cory also frequently links to others who discuss the topics). This is a lot of reading and work, and at the end of the day, that's what it's going to take to break out of the bullshit cycle of being boned over by social media and web services. It's probably not going to be "going back to Web 1.0" or whatever shit scare tactics are going to be thrown out next because 1) there's no need, and 2) very few people know how to use legacy technologies. Hell, sites like Neocities and Dreamwidth see flat or declining traffic on any given day because even HTML is beyond most web users, and it was once a staple of being able to navigate having your own website, blog, or forum (which often included the added layer of BBCode). Want to make a website to share your fan art? Guess who's learning HTML and CSS! Want to post on that forum and not be a block of black text on a white background? Guess who's learning BBCode! We created technologies to make interacting online easier and more efficient, but in the process, we've created a world where people want to be able to point and click (or touch/talk) for everything. Apple saw this coming! That's why they popularized the icon-based UI (GUI) for home and business use in Lisa and Mac (which became MacOS), why Microsoft copied the idea for Windows, and why everyone else was onboard as their userbase grew, with even Unix/Linux users developing GUIs in some instances. The Apple Vision Pro's debut, even if the launch price point and custom-fit requirements mean slow growth for the specific product, indicates where Apple sees UIs going in the future. The technology is fantastic, but, like previous technologies have panned out to be, it's an obvious double-edged sword. Users could find themselves as easily trapped by a company - especially one with a history of proprietary software and non-compatibility - as they could find themselves freed by it. Tons of potential exists here - but only if users as a whole commit themselves to rejecting manipulation and control by corporations and put in the hard work for a truly open, end-to-end experience online.

Joomla to Squarespace Website Migration
Overview: I am trying to migrate a site from Joomla to SquareSpace. The domain registration and website hosting is on GoDaddy via Linux OS. I want to keep the domain registration with GoDaddy but migrate the hosting over to SquareSpace. The new website will have all new subdomains, and so I want to make sure all the old subdomains are redirected to the applicable new subdomains.
For example, moving www.example.com/help to www.example.com/faqs. I know to do this I would need to edit the .htaccess file in GoDaddy’s file manager, however I’m worried that once I migrate the website hosting over to SquareSpace, I won’t have access to the file manager in GoDaddy anymore. This is the only way I can edit the .htaccess file as I do not have access to the Joomla software that the website was created with (it was created by a web developer who I no longer have contact with). Can anyone shed some light on how to best go about this?
Second problem: Also, there are duplicate URLs in the current site that are being indexed by Google and which need to be deleted — any ideas on how to do this? Should I be deleting these duplicate pages or redirecting them?

500px Relaunches Portfolios, Its Template-Based Website Builder
500px has announced Portfolios, which it describes as a simple, modern, and efficient way to build a website in a matter of minutes and included with the website’s Pro Membership plan.
The offering here looks similar to popular photography portfolio hosting options from companies like Smugmug, PhotoShelter, Zenfolio, or even Squarespace. What makes it more like the first three than perhaps the last is that it is a pared-down, tailored builder specifically designed with photographers in mind.
500px Portfolio advertises “photography first templates,” which basically means that its templates are designed to highlight imagery first and foremost. From what was visible on the company’s website, there are three templates to choose from right now: Moodie, Newton, and Adams.
Moodie is a grid-style format that will allow for an overview of your work that is easily visible on one page. Newton is a horizontal layout that displays large cover photos that might be a good fit for fashion or portrait photographers. Finally, Adams is a full-screen-focused layout that is designed to “immerse” viewers in the subject matter.

All the templates are included, and swapping among them can be done at any time. Additionally, all the templates are mobile-optimized and are compatible in either dark or light modes.
500px supports a set of analytics and tracking tools for websites built with Portfolio and, gratefully, custom domains are also supported. 500px also says images are “copyright protected” to prevent right-click actions, but a quick test of the “inspect” tool in Google Chrome on one of the example templates showed that the original files can still be acquired for those who are dead-set on grabbing images from a Portfolio site.
The company says that its website builder is different from other options due to its simplicity, ease of maintenance, lack of an “intimidating maze” of configuration options, and that they are designed specifically for photographers. And while this appears to be the case, also note that simplicity can have the tendency to remove customizability that helps a website stand out. 500px also doesn’t note how its sites handle SEO or blogs, so it’s worth investigating before dropping money on a subscription.

Luckily, that is an option: anyone can test out a Portfolio website and see what it would look like before purchasing a 500px Pro membership and migrating your site. Since Portfolio is included with the $10-per-month Pro membership ($6 for the first year for new members), the asking price for this service is actually quite competitive when compared to the field. Though it is significantly pared down and simplified and there are a limited number of template offerings at launch, it’s a solid benefit to the Pro membership.
If the concept of “Portfolio” sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the latest iteration of the product that 500px has been developing since as early as 2013. Looking at what was originally announced, while Portfolio isn’t new, it certainly has changed since its inception.
One thing that has certainly changed is the price: in 2013, a Pro Membership could be had for $25 a year.

Ever had an enquiry blow up on you after your response?
I live around 14 miles away from the nearest city here in the UK. Based in a large town I dominate Google with the search phrase "SEO [town name]" and recently I've been working on my Google rankings for "SEO Consultant [city]"
On Monday I joined a [city] Facebook group as a friend forwarded me a post from a company asking for SEO company recommendations. As a result, the creator of the group sent me a FB message asking about SEO costs for her website.
This was Sunday, normally I don't reply out of office hours but I was lazing on the sofa with my iPad and thought "Well, she's in charge of the group, this would be a good networking opportunity if nothing else" so I replied asking what search terms she wanted to be Google page 1 for, she replied "Business Mentor [city] and Executive Coaching [city]" she seemed eager to learn more about my costs and services and had other questions too.
I took a look at her page and it was a free website (Weebly) with car crash multicoloured fonts and random capitalisation, altogether looked like an 8 year old tried to have a bash at writing content for the website.
Her home page had the main Headline "EMPOWERING you to Succeed in all that you Desire!"* cliche in pink font, complete with explamation mark (point for US). I have fudged this phrase for anonymity
I asked her to email me at [domain name] so I could reply in more detail. On my browser toolbar I have several shortcuts to help with the repeated questions I get asked about clients wanting to learn exactly what SEO is.
Anyhoo, she replied 'OK' and Monday rolls around, no email. I messaged her back on FB and informed her I was out of office on Tuesday on a client visit [neighbouring town 15 miles away] so I'd be out of office - if she wanted my soonest reply to email me otherwise there would be a delay in my response.
She did email me, a short message, I replied that the Headline should change from "EMPOWERING you to Succeed in all that you Desire!" to "Business Mentor and Executive Coaching [city]" for Google to read (Otherwise Google is ranking her for the empowering bunkum) also to consider migrating platform as opposed to a free website she had built herself.
Tuesday morning 5am usual wake up time (I blame the menopause) , I check my emails and there's a looong email from her slating my attitude.
She was very annoyed I insisted on her emailing me as opposed to communicating via messanger
It was wrong of me to use the word 'cliche' to describe her headline
I will lose customers with my attitude of telling her pink font was maybe not the best choice for her business (Executive Coaching) and I should change the way I tell people that advising that exclamation marks were wrong. After all, it's a personal decision.
She was proud of hr website she had built herself, I am telling her to change everything that she's worked so hard to achieve (achieve what exactly? Not ranking in Google and needing SEO advice and services?)
Once I had finished laughing and 2 cups of tea later I composed a reply effectively saying that if she was resistant to change for her business voice when targeting CEO's and Executives, refused to even consider investing in a professional platform like Squarespace or Wordpress, and told her straight, I never conduct serious business over Messanger .. I have shortcuts saved, also several case studies/helpful blogs on my site to link to for learning about the SEO industry.
It's best we don't persue this relationship any further.
