You know? People say a lot "I was born the wrong generation" for a lot of things, and there's one thing in particular I think about that makes me think the jobs we have today are just unfulfilling.
As hard as work was back in the 40-50-60s (my grand parent's years) I feel like most of it would be more fulfilling than most jobs these days.
They HAD to cut down wood because people NEEDED it for housing, people had farms because people NEEDED those farms to survive, villages were starting to be built so EVERYONE in the village had an important purpose because it was such small communities, everything everyone did affected everything around them, and if you did something good it would show, it would be appreciated, you know that by having your farm selling the food in the nearby village it would feed the village, people who built houses in that village could see people living in them and being able to make their own positive impact on their community
Today? Sure, working at a coffee shop is cool and all, but it doesn't feed a village, even less a city. We are more and more disconnected from the impact our work does, what's fulfilling about stacking store shelves so that entitled customers don't get mad? What's fulfilling about being a secretary doing basically minimum wage for a company that makes billions every year?
"We need to appreciate the little things" That's true, and also the whole "If I'm able to make just one person smile, I'll be happy" Of course, I am not denying that and especially for how much I actually enjoy customer service and talking with people and providing them with a good experience.
However, today? We see how the world is getting worse and worse from big companies, the actions/ lack of actions from the government. And us? We can't do a single thing on our own. We are powerless, we can try to make our OWN situation better, and I encourage anyone to go on strike to get better working condition, always, but we can't exactly strike in a meaningful matter to be able to get billionaires to agree to stop fucking up the planet so much.
We still need to eat, we still need jobs and we have people we need to provide to, we are powerless towards the environment and so many other things.
With the education we have that makes basically slave workers ready to be exploited, and some places (I won't name the country) but they keep dumbing down education and banning books, basing the studies on religion rather than facts which all leads to people not being smart enough to vote for the people that wants to actually help.
On top of that, even those who have a decent education have less and less opportunities to go to higher studies with the current salaries and prices around.
Imagine if everyone had access to the opportunity to learn new skills, get more education, be able to do the work they want instead of a minimum wage job that doesn't pay the bills, the world would be such a better place, there would be more people on the front discovering new things, achieving new inventions and breakthroughs, you know; a fulfilling job.
All and all, I got a bit sidetracked but now with all of us doing exploited jobs that really aren't fulfilling, no wonder most of us are depressed or using drugs or alcohol to cope, life is getting worse and we are powerless

Tinubu sets a new minimum pay of N70,000
A new minimum salary of N70,000 has been authorised by President Bola Tinubu for Nigerian workers, with a three-year review of the national minimum wage law to follow. The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, made this declaration on Thursday, July 18, in the Presidential Villa. During a continuing meeting with organised trade union officials, the decision was disclosed. Comrade Festus…

if your reaction to Musk pushing for more H1B visas is "wow the hitler salute guy accidentally did something good, this will be good for immigrants who get these visas" and not "hm, the richest guy on earth wants to expand a program that lets companies like his (and also literally his company in particular) hire immigrants in a way that gives the companies all the leverage and effectively stops those workers from exercising any of their labor rights (or even just switching to a better job) under threat of deportation, and he's also part of a White House that has been super vocally anti-immigration. perhaps there is some ulterior motive to this announcement and his proposed changes to the program that will result in these H1B immigrants getting taken advantage of" then you need to, idk, read the news more? stop taking fascists at face value? think about why fascists would support immigration specifically in the labor sector while physically blocking it everywhere else?
my issue with Musk proposing an expansion of the H1B program has not, and has never been, "competition" from immigrants. this job market is already horrendous, H1Bs are a drop in the bucket in that regard and anyone seriously mad that an immigrant "stole their job" is either racist or falling for racist propaganda. my issue is the opposite: if i and an H1B holder both get hired for the exact same job, they will be making a fraction of my salary (because of their immigrant status) with none of the protections against labor violations or even the ability to just walk away and work somewhere else (again, because of their immigrant status). they're doing the same work as me (better, actually, to qualify for a green card) and yet they're getting paid less and treated worse because they're an immigrant.
and in theory you can counter this with "okay but it's worth it for them to put up with that because after a few years they'll be a citizen and able to make the big bucks with labor protections too", but here's the thing: a fascist White House talking out one side of their mouth about issuing more H1Bs and making them cheaper, while simultaneously ranting about "closing the border" and sending Fox News teams out on ICE raids the day after inauguration, is not a White House that has any intention of letting these visa holders become citizens. big companies are overwhelmingly going to use these new H1Bs as a way to hire people, string them along for a while while underpaying and overworking them, and then find some reason to not give them a green card at the end of the process. formerly the incentive for companies not to do that was all the overhead fees associated with the H1B itself, but oh look, Musk wants to reduce those too.
like, yeah, i get it, the process of becoming a US citizen is a nightmare designed to be hostile and let in as few people as possible. the solution to that is absolutely not to let ELON FUCKING MUSK, the RICHEST MAN ON EARTH, rework + expand H1Bs. do you really trust him to handle that in a way that results in anyone but him and his friends winning. do you expect the average H1B holder experience to end in citizenship under Trump's administration. do you really.

Members of congress and the president should earn minimum wage. Federal minimum wage, $7.25 per hour. 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, that comes out to $15,080 before taxes. If we're SUPER generous and say that they're on the clock 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (ignoring recesses and holidays) that's $63,510 annually, which works out to over $30 per hour for a regular employee, and about a third of what the rank and file members currently make (a quarter of what the Speaker and VP make)
Tumblr media
Oh, but "working" 168 hours a week means they earn 128 hours of overtime, which is paid time and a half, so that boosts them up to $87,464 per year, which is about half what they currently earn and over $20,000 more than the median household income, two fulltime non-minimum wage earners filing jointly.
$87.5k represents the absolute maximum, but how much work do they actually do?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's call it 150 days. If we're generous again and say they work 24 hours each day, that's 3,600 hours for a total of $26,100 per year (excluding ovettime). Regular full time is 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, that's 2,080 hours, so they'd still get 1,520 hours of overtime for a total of $31,610 assuming they are on the floor at all times and never eat or sleep when in session. There is no good reason they should be earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per year when their constiuents struggle to make ends meet. $31.6k is more than I made at my last job where I earned $15 per hour.

I’ve said it before but so much of the current salary structure and cba was designed like no one thought about how it would effect things after the first season and now we’re seeing them try to fix it which fine but like at least be transparent about it

I genuinely do not understand how anyone is affording kids these days. Like even just being able to buy or rent a house or apartment with enough space for children is prohibitively expensive, let alone paying for all the other costs. You have to be rich to even think about it.

Hate it when companies always say to not discuss salaries with coworkers.
