Lisanna's "Death" (apology)
I'm currently re-reading one of my multi-chapter stories, Demons, and came across this heartbreaking scene.
I remember how much it hurt me to write this, and it hurt me even more now that I re-read it.
I am sorry, dear readers. I am sorry Mirajane, for putting you through this torment.
And I am sorry Lisanna and the other person involved in this scene
WARNING: HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD (if you haven't read the story and plan on doing so)
"Lisanna!" Mirajane ran to her sister's side; hoping, praying. Wanting so desperately to believe that she hadn't lost her, even though those lifeless blue eyes were staring at her.
Along the way, the take-over mage ended up tripping and falling once again to her knees; exhaustion taking over her. Never before had she felt so drained and she was confused. After all, she had released incredible amounts of magic before, but it never affected her so much.
"What's going on?" Mira whispered while glancing at the strange black marking on her arms. It must be related to how she felt, but what were they?
A bright light caught her attention and her eyes widened once she noticed Lisanna's body was encircled by it.
"No! Don't take her away from me!" Memories of a similar light that took her away years before crossed the she-devil's mind and she quickly got back on her feet and resumed running towards her sister.
"Lisanna!" Just as Mirajane reached her, the light grew so intense that she was forced to cover her eyes.
Upon opening them once again, a confusing sight left a million questions running through her mind. "What? How?" She took the dead body onto her arms, staring at it in disbelief. In that one moment she'd closed her eyes, everything had changed.
Lisanna's familiar blue eyes had suddenly turned to brown, her skin had gotten darker and the Strauss trademark white hair turned to brown. It was no longer her sister there, although it was someone she considered to be a sister.
Once the shock worn off, Mirajane was filled with a mixture of relief and sadness. Lisanna wasn't dead, she hadn't lost her. But someone else had died, an innocent. And she hated the fact that all her mind could think was "At least it's not Lisanna. At least I haven't lost her again".
"No. No!" Tears began streaming down her face as she was hit with a wave of pain and sorrow. Shaky hands ran through the brunette curls while she tried to comprehend what was happening.
"Cana! Please, wake up." Mira pleaded while sobbing desperately onto her friend's body. Only a few minutes ago she'd been heartbroken; thinking her sister had been taken away once again. But somehow, Lisanna had been saved from this horrible fate.
Instead, Cana had been the one to die. The cheerful, teasing, loyal brunette who always made them laugh; who always stood up for her friends; who'd always protected them. She'd saved Lisanna; had risked her own life by taking the latter's place.
"Thank you. I'll never forget what you did." Mirajane gave the brunette a small smile before collapsing on the floor, Cana's body falling beside her.

Mira vs Erza; Freed vs Rufus
Send me a Fairy Tail 1v1 you would want to see. I probably won't write it but I might tell you who would win.
Mira vs. Erza
My heart says Mira but my canon-stickler brain says Erza. Mashima's casting them as rough equals and rivals early on seemed fun and well-balanced, with Erza's armor versatility balanced by Mirajane's overwhelming strength. But then Mashima started giving Erza armors for every fucking occasion and making them more and more broken.
That said, Mirajane also got a lot of boosts from the Tartaros arc, so between Seilah and Alegria, I'm still going to go with her.
Freed vs. Rufus
Freed is an interesting person to take on Rufus given that he doesn't have to shout the effects of his Dark Ecriture, and that he does a lot better in close combat than Rufus does. The question is if Freed can actually hit Rufus, given Rufus' habit of using Memory Make illusions to leave decoys.
Of course, if you give Freed time to prepare enchantments, things go south for poor Rufus pretty quickly as even Memory Make isn't gonna get him out of that one. We'll disallow it just to be safe. There's also spells Rufus couldn't conceivably copy, such as Freed's Darkness and Absolute Shadow morphs, which Rufus trying to copy would only land him in trouble with as he has no knowledge of or experience of how to use them effectively.
I'm gonna go with Freed.

What's your favourite mirajane moment ?
I was tempted to just say All of them!!!! and call it a day, but I wanted to actual 89think about this and form a legitimate answer so uhhhh…. Here we go I guess? You probably wanted like a paragraph and a gif but I’m just Like This and I love her so… yeah. Sorry anon.
I couldn’t choose just one, I’m sorry. But I did get a top three, and I figured that that was sufficient. I hope that’s okay! I promise I thought super hard about this.
All moments are taken from the manga, although I will be adding images from the anime. I did not take omakes or filler anime arcs into consideration here, or any of the spin-offs.
Right… Here are some honorary mentions that I wish I could have added:
Mirajane vs Seilah (Poison? A dessert for a demon like me), Mirajane pretending to be Lucy to save her from Phantom, the final scene of Mirajane vs Jenny that wasn’t fanservice and she knocks Jenny the fuck out (I accepted your request, now I need you to accept my power), Mirajane running to Erza on the battlefield even though she knows full well that she cannot protect herself from Phantom Lord, the song she sings for team Natsu’s return from the Tower of Heaven (prime Erzajane content that I STAN), and how she transforms into a snake / members of the guild during the Fantasia arc because she wants to be seen as more than just ‘sexy’.
Now then! Buckle up because I imagine this is gonna be a long ride.
Three: Mirajane vs Azuma
This was so close to being my number two but I’ll explain why it isn’t when I get to what is in the second place.
So naturally any battle with Mira in is of interest to me, but this one had the added bonus of being her AND Lisanna; the first time Lisanna has seen her sister fight since she “died”.
Tumblr media
In many ways, this is the first time that we see Mirajane fight ‘seriously’, (in the battle of fairy tail she still sees Freed as a family member, a comrade; Azuma is nothing to her), and she shows her S-Class powers. It’s a great battle!
But she doesn’t win, and that says so much more about her character than if she had.
Tumblr media
Let’s really dissect this line folks okay. So firstly and most importantly: she’s protecting Lisanna here. The Lisanna that she saw die in front of her a few years earlier. Mirajane swore to protect her, and now she’s got to admit to herself that she can’t doesn’t have it in her to do so. This is not something we see Fairy Tail wizards do often, and even what Gildarts was trying to teach Natsu: admitting defeat does not make you less of a wizard.
This is made even better for me because the person that does defeat Azuma is Erza and I’m Erzajane trash but that’s not especially relevant here.
tl;dr: I love this fight because Mirajane is admitting her flaws even if they play into her greatest fears of losing a family member, or not being strong enough to protect who she loves. It’s a good character building session for her and the fight is generally very good.
Two: Mirajane vs Kamika
Okay so this one was almost swapped with the scene that I just mentioned, but I’m gonna explain why I’ve decided to do it the way that I have.
This fight, in so many ways, is the greatest reveal of Mirajane’s character that we receive in the series. Am I gonna explain why? You bet!
Mostly, it comes down to this single line:
Tumblr media
Please do not for a second forget that Mirajane is an S-Class wizard who gained that title when she was 15 / 16! Mashima said that in a one-on-one fight between Mirajane and Erza, he would expect Mirajane to be the winner, but the thing is she wouldn’t unleash that power on a girlfriend friend. If a member of the guild is present, especially one of her siblings, she does not use even half of her ability.
And I seriously love this fight! Yes, there is so much wasted potential in that Mashima only uses one Satan Soul, but I’ll take any Mirajane that I can get. She spends so much time being the bartender, the cook, the model, people forget to take her seriously for her power, and how much control she has over it. Like there are literal demons living inside of her and she!! Looks like this!!
Tumblr media
Kamika even says that she is gonna expel the demons and the darkness from Mirajane, and she laughs at that.
Tumblr media
Mirajane knows that her magic is evil, that she is essentially a demon, and she uses that strength for good. It must be so exhausting for her, but she does it because she knows how it feels to be seen as a villain (during her childhood), and she doesn’t wanna be that person anymore. Also, knowing that she has so much more potential is as satisfying to me as it is frustrating. I would love to see more of her Satan Souls but I don’t expect Mashima to think that much about anything in this manga so it’s like, whatever you know?
tl;dr: Mirajane is so much more powerful than we can even comprehend and she deserves endless credit and respect for that.
One: Mirajane vs Freed
Okay, so this one is obvious and I know that, but I love it for so many reasons and it was honestly what made me fall in love with her character, so it had to be number one.
This image gives me chills
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see it in her eyes, she’s reliving her trauma, the death of her sister, and Freed knows that Lisanna is dead and died in front of Mirajane. Yet still he threatens the life of Elfman, Mirajane’s only living blood relative. This scene, for me, is like a switch flipped. We see for the first time that Mirajane can go from the sweet barmaid who cries when people criticise her drawings to a literal feral demon with enough magic to shake Magnolia.
But you know? That isn’t why this is my favourite Mirajane moment. The fight is excellent, and finally we understand that she’s an S-Class wizard and deserves that title; she’s an incredible wizard who everyone respects.
However this, this is the true gem of the scene for me:
Tumblr media
Yes, this is one of the most iconic lines from Mirajane, maybe even from Fairy Tail as a series, but the mistake many people make is thinking that she is predicting what will happen to Freed, and that just is not the case. Well, not entirely. The truth? Mirajane is referring to herself.
Think about it like this; she watched her sister die. Her sister who was like 14. And it was their brother who killed her. Mirajane was S-Class, she had the power to protect her family, and yet she was unable. That pain was so strong she literally repressed her magic for years, and Freed cracked that armour until it came flooding back, and she was overwhelmed with it. She literally almost kills Freed, but Lisanna’s smile and voice bring her back from that. Mirajane could have abandoned Elfman for what he did, and yet she would not force him to be alone; she’s too kind.
What I love about Mirajane is her layers. Her skin is made of beauty, her soul chaos, and yet her heart? That’s kind, more than anything else, and it’s her true power. She is able to sit across from the man who killed her sister, cook him dinner, smile and laugh along with him, because her heart is so big, her entire being forgiving and loving. It changes her personality from the angry teen we see as she joins the guild to a strong and sweet young woman, and this is why the fight during the battle of Fairy Tail will always be my favourite Mirajane moment.
tl;dr: This is the first time we see her S-Class power and understand how loving and kind Mirajane is. It opens us up to her trauma and her heart and it is one of the best fights in the series in my opinion.
I hope that somewhat answers your question anon, but the fact still stands that any moment with Mirajane in is one of my favourites. Thanks for the ask, sorry for the essay!

Warning: Rant
So... I was thinking about Fairy Tail, as I am wont to do, and something occurred to me. Before I get started, I would just like to clarify a few things. I love Fairy Tail (even if there’s a lot I don’t like). I love Jellal. I love Ultear. I love the Tartaros arc.
I am going to complain about all of those things. This will not be short. This will not lack profanity. Read at your own risk.
So one of the most controversial characters in Fairy Tail - aside from all the other ones - is Jellal Fernandes. Some people love him, some people hate him, some people are indifferent, etc. Sadly, most of the people who love him have a tendency to defend him blindly (yours truly included). So let’s talk about some problems people have with him.
The biggest is his recruitment of the Oración Seis - five individuals who were at one point enslaved to him, whom he beats the shit out of and recruits. A lot of people feel that he didn’t give them a choice. For a while, I scoffed at that, remembering that Jellal flat-out told them that he wasn’t taking them back to jail, and I never saw any implications that he was going to kill them should they refuse. But then I looked at things through their eyes, and realized that they probably didn’t feel the same way. They saw a guy who was powerful enough to have destroyed them by himself and who admitted to being sent by the person most likely to want them locked up again. In their eyes, they probably didn’t have as many options. The anime expanded the scene further, showing their decision to follow him and officially become “good”, but it didn’t happen in the manga, so it’s really up to the viewer whether to count it as canon (to the best of my knowledge, it isn’t official, but I don’t know what Mashima-sensei thinks about it).
Another problem people have with Jellal is everything being blamed on Ultear, which... honestly? Yeah, that bothers me too. Because it’s not about Jellal or Ultear - it’s about taking the blame from Zeref so that he can be a tragic villain (something that is very hard for me to accept at this point). First, we’re told that Jellal is being possessed by Zeref, who is - as far as we knew then - this mysterious evil wizard who was responsible for a lot of shit but was thankfully now dead. Okay, that works. But then it’s revealed to have been Ultear all along (in the manga, this is revealed almost immediately, complete with a bubble bath scene, but it takes longer in the anime). The problem here is that that makes no goddamn sense. It feels like an asspull, even in the manga, as if Mashima-sensei had finally developed Zeref enough to genuinely get attached to him as a character (which writers do), only to decide that Zeref should be sympathetic.
First off, since when can Ultear brainwash people? Her magics are Arc of Time and Ice-Make. She uses the brainwashing thing once, and never again after that, despite the fact that it would’ve been really fucking useful.
Second, if Jellal wasn’t being possessed, where the hell did he get all that magical power? It’s not implied that he’s always just had a bunch of magic - he doesn’t use it until after going off the deep end. If he was possessed by a super powerful evil wizard, then yeah, it makes sense that he’d have a lot of power, but Ultear wasn’t supplying him. So, where’d it come from? And regardless of who was controlling him, why the hell did they allow him to let Erza get away?
Third, how the hell is he still alive? In the manga, it was stated that he was atomized by the destruction of the Tower. Atomized. As in, reduced to atoms. But come Oración Seis arc, and he’s... totally fine. Well, he does have memory loss, leading to:
Four, what’s up with his brain? He can’t remember anything except Erza’s first name and, somehow, the location of Nirvana. Oh, and he remembers how to use his magic. Somehow. Putting aside that that’s not how memory loss works, that’s still a lot of disbelief we’ve gotta suspend. For that matter, how the hell did Brain find him? What, he was just in the right place at the right time? Really?
Five, wasn’t Brain the one who taught him magic? And wasn’t Brain also the one responsible for Ultear’s life being a dumpster fire? In that case, why the fuck would she work with him? For the sake of the Alliance, which was apparently a non-aggression pact (that is also bullshit, but it’s irrelevant for the moment)? Doubtful.
Lastly, why was Ultear even in the Tower at all? Did Hades send her? Why? Did he genuinely believe that a little girl would skip through a Tower of terrified slaves and people being tortured (you know, like she was), and not think to herself “gee, this is kinda messed up. Maybe I shouldn’t be working for this guy.”? Did he actually think that? And even if he did, wasn’t Hades supposed to be extremely smart? He shouldn’t have even taken the risk.
So yeah, there are a lot of plot holes. It’s a shounen, so that’s to be expected, but here’s what really gets me: All of this, everything you’ve read so far, could easily have been avoided. How, you ask? Well, this is where the Tartaros arc comes into the equation.
Jellal is insanely strong, can apparently survive getting atomized, doesn’t seem to fully understand other people’s point of view on things, and has a strange obsession with Zeref (who, by the way, has done nothing to any of the members of Crime Sorcìere. Nothing). Sound familiar?
Yeah, the Etherious demons. Literally all of the above problems can be solved by making Jellal a demon. You still feel like someone should’ve been controlling his actions during his streak of villainy? FINE. Seilah exists. Problem solved. If she can use Macro on herself, she can use it on other demons. Mirajane’s immunity can be explained due to the variety of her abilities. Easy.
So, how does this work? Let’s say that Jellal is the result of an attempt to create a humanoid demon that can act as a spy or something. Only he doesn’t understand why he should be looking down on humans. So Mard Geer decides to “help” him think that all humans are shit by sending him to the Tower and sealing his powers, hoping that he’ll develop some sort of deep-seated loathing of humanity. Only instead he makes friends and decides to try and liberate them. Obviously, since the Tower is under Grimoire Heart’s control, this isn’t good for the Alliance, so Seilah heads over to make sure Jellal is unsuccessful. She decides to allow Erza to get away in order to use her as a scapegoat and keep everyone in line.
Flash-forward to Jellal getting blown up in the Tower. He’s destroyed, and reforms in the Cube. Like Tempester, he doesn’t have his memories. Part of the Balam Alliance involves the three major guilds to try to do at least one Nice Bad Guy Thing™ per year, so Tartaros gets Crawford Seam to implant some knowledge about Nirvana into Jellal’s head and they hand him over to Brain (he can still be in a coma if you wanna see him in chains so badly). Jellal wakes up, has no idea what the hap is fuckening, and does what he does in canon (only without remembering Erza - he just figures that the people not trying to take over the world are probably the good guys). Anyway, he helps Natsu fight Zero, gets arrested, and leaves to be probably executed.
Only his memories start returning, and he realizes “oh shit, Tartaros is full of demons, I’m one of them, the humans are fucked”. So he basically decides to try and help the humans by providing them with what little he remembers. Ultear and Merudy break him out, and Crime Sorcìere becomes a kinda task force (as in, the Council is pretending to be actively hunting them, but isn’t because 1. they’re really good at taking out Dark Guilds, and 2. Jellal keeps sending them extremely helpful info).
Hell, this even fixes the beach scene. Jellal has the majority of his memories back, knows he’s a demon, and feels like he needs to tell Erza, because he’s not sure if he’s capable of loving her (literally). But he panics, says the “I have a fiancée” line, and doesn’t end up telling her. The scene where Ultear and Merudy tease him about his shitty lying is replaced with them scolding him and saying that of course he can love and Erza doesn’t care what he is.
Anyway, Jellal’s struggle changes from him trying to forgive himself for crimes the series is intent on reminding us “weren’t his fault” (yet also fails to explain exactly why they weren’t his fault) to him trying to come to terms with his identity as a demon.
This also gives him a reason to go after Zeref. The Etherious, with the exception of Mard Geer, are hardwired to believe that they need to reunite with Zeref. Jellal wants to prove - to himself and everyone else - that he’s more than his origins and decides to kill Zeref (ironically becoming one of the only demons doing what he was supposed to be doing in the process), despite knowing that he will die if Zeref does.
Now, let’s get back to the Jellal vs. the Oración Seis fight. Jellal is a character who wants to be a good person, but shouldn’t he understand that the Seis might not see things the way he does? Well, no, actually. Most demons don’t seem to have any empathy at all - even Natsu has difficulty seeing things from other people’s point of view.
Speaking of Natsu, Jellal’s whole “kill Zeref” plan becomes a bit of a problem once he realizes that Natsu is also a demon, and will thus also die if Zeref does. Jellal has, over the course of the series, demonstrated little to no regard for his own well being, but it’s doubtful that he’d be okay with Natsu dying.
One other complaint people have is that Jellal is often thrown into the plot when there’s no reason for him to be there. But if he’s a demon, his presence can become foreshadowing for Natsu’s identity. Instead of having his character randomly show up to have a moment with Erza, the series could instead show what he was doing compared to what Natsu was doing, highlighting their similarities. And then, once Natsu learns the truth, Jellal can be the one who says “yeah, well, welcome to the club”, giving him an actual reason for showing up so much.
And that’s still not everything. This also provides a solution to the rest of the cast learning about the demons in the first place. In canon, Doranbolt finds out from Cobra - who, when you think about it, really shouldn’t have known about that. It’s highly unlikely that the Dark Guilds had meetings (again, the whole “it was a non-aggression pact” thing), and Brain was good enough at shielding his thoughts that Cobra didn’t know his “father’s” true opinion of him until Brain literally back-stabbed him.
Is that it? Nope. Jellal’s relationship with Merudy and Ultear becomes a lot more meaningful too. Instead of being “oh yeah, they’re friends now, yay”, it becomes Jellal accepting them in spite of the crimes they (willingly) committed, and them accepting him in spite of him being a demon. Hence why he knows that Fairy Tail won’t abandon Natsu - because true friends will be there for you, even if you are literally a monster.
On top of all that, there’s Jellal’s strength. Several people have said that he shouldn’t have been able to defeat the Seis, given that Midnight beat him so badly the first time they fought (to be fair, he’d just woken up from a coma and spent a lot of magic on a suicide attempt). But the Etherious are powered by negative emotions like anger and hate (hence why Natsu can solve most of his problems by getting pissed off at them), so Jellal could’ve just been powering up off how much he hates himself and/or Zeref.
To sum it all up, some of the biggest problems with Fairy Tail could’ve been resolved by making Jellal into a demon. And that says a lot about this series, to be perfectly fucking honest.

Conversation
What he says: Where are all the real matchups at?
What he means: Whenever new villains appear, unless they are extremely obviously counterparts to the heroes (Zancrow to Natsu, Orga to Laxus, Chelia to Wendy), there almost seems to be a guaranteed match-up based on how the villains' powers are similar to other powers (Ultear getting involved with DiMaria being an example, Mirajane vs. Seilah being another example) that don't actually happpen. Which makes it feel not only like missed opportunities, but outright neglect when a lot of these don't happen. One thing I think almost no one has noticed is that Jenny Realight (the Blue Pegasus model) could theoretically have used her Takeover power to become Wall Eehto, and become a major leg-up in the war. This is just the latest tragedy, considering Meredy was fully equipped to completely nullify Kyoka's powers (which are really just hers re-used) and actually justify Erza's win, instead of standing around screaming Jellal's name while he beat up the Oracion Seis. Similarly, Max Alors could have stepped up from side character status in the battle with Ajeel Ramal. If Bisca could become a player in taking down a major boss, why not him? Even God Serena could've been involved in a much more entertaining battle with the dragonslayers (of whom there are seven against his eight lacrima). This reaches at least as far back as Tenrou, where one would think Bixlow would be a major player against Kain, the Kin who possesses humans. Long story short, it's more Wasted Potential™.
