Our national team has been ranked No. 1 in the world since June 2017 and for all but 10 months since March 2008. The squad has never been ranked lower than No. 2. In the Round of 16, Sweden conquered a dynasty.

Close observers were not surprised. The team has been in mental decay since Carli Lloyd retired (2020) and corporate media anointed the purple-haired Rapinoe as the unquestioned face of American women’s soccer.

For the last three years, the 38-year-old winger has used the team’s spotlight to grow the Rapinoe brand. But those women earned their spots on the roster. Rapinoe was on the team and on the field because of social pressure and a never-ending marketing campaign. She hadn’t earned the right to fail. The opportunity was bestowed on her.

When asked for her greatest memory of her “legendary” career, she pointed to the lawsuit she and her teammates filed against the U.S. Soccer Federation over alleged pay inequality. Gender pay inequality is a myth and a lie, no different from other popular corporate media narratives like climate change and the alleged genocidal homicide of unarmed black men.

But the truth is irrelevant in the making of an Alphabet Mafia icon. Megan Rapinoe is the George Floyd of soccer. Racism and sexism are the only things that prevented them from being president and vice president of the United States.

Or maybe Rapinoe is just another narcissistic, greedy, entitled celebrity.

Could you imagine Joe Montana or Michael Jordan summarizing their careers by referencing a contract dispute?

Rapinoe is a fraud. She’s the Colin Kaepernick of soccer. Her attitude poisoned the women’s national soccer team. Let’s hope her side effects don’t linger.

Nobles of Ink are outsiders, native to the Shadow Plane.  While much of the Shadow Plane is full of dangerous undead, much more of it is a twisted mirror of the material plane, along with twisted mirrors of humanoid societies, cities, governments, and castles.

It bothers me, therefore, that there are so few humanoid-adjacent creatures native to the Shadow Plane.  Not every single settlement in the world can be run by a fetchling or vampire.

Nobles of Ink govern some of these settlements, as a rare species that established themselves as an elite class of rulers long ago.  They have no special abilities that allow them to keep their positions by force; instead, they seem to have an incredible innate adeptness at clever political maneuvering.  They ensure that those under their rule are happy and well-protected.

Nobles of Ink don’t procreate in a traditional way.  Instead, they carefully choose someone to appoint as their successor to govern their domain, and transform that person irreversibly into a Noble of Ink.  A Noble of Ink is considered either an augmented humanoid or augmented outsider, depending on what the base creature was.

The basic Noble of Ink is below, but it wouldn’t be uncommon to find one with class levels.

A noble of ink has Diplomacy, Knowledge (history), Knowledge (local), and Knowledge (nobility) as the four bonus class skills it gains from being an outsider.  Its base saving throws are +3 Fortitude, +0 Reflex, +3 Will.

Day 2 - Packed to the gills with PERFECT!

What a day we have had! If I were ranking today on a 10 point scale, I would give it a 25!! Groceries were delivered in the time slot given (shocking!) and everything else fell into place, as planned - a much better day than yesterday.

Today was Sagan's oral report on James Smithson and we all learned so much. It was a firm A+++++

After a round of appreciative applause, we began preparations for our "lunch on the run" with sandwiches from Panera ( our next door neighbor.) Then we headed by Metro to Planet Word. Temps were in the low 70s with an intermittent spitting of rain but although we had our umbrellas, we didn't need them.

Planet Word is a GREAT museum celebrating... wait for it... WORDS: the history of language, the joy of reading and the power of writing. The exhibits are very well done and highly engaging - even the elevator is fun.

The word wall is informative, interactive and brilliantly done.

After a short time exploring the general exhibits we headed into Lexicon Lane. Lexicon Lane is a combination escape room and puzzle hunt, designed to resemble an old village with the choice of 26 unique puzzle “cases” for visitors to solve. We picked our "case" and had 1.5 hours to solve the clues and save the world from disaster.

It was a blast to watch these minds in action.

Clues were everywhere, hidden in plain sight.

Needless to say, the world is in great hands!! They did indeed save the world but it took most of our time.

(True confession - LaVerne and I tried a different box last year and our time expired and we did NOT save the world nor get to ring the bell.)

I have worried and fretted and made a plan to try an beat the 90+ degree heat during our trip, but I failed to make a plan for visiting a place where the air conditioning was set to winter! I asked to have the temperature changed - and the "host" who was wearing a heavy sweatshirt, relayed my request but nothing changed. We were uncomfortably cold - but they solved it anyway. BRRRRRRRR.

We did NOT see even 1/2 of al this place had to offer, partly because once we entered an exhibit no one wanted to leave. The reading table was an amazing experience. Pick a book, open it and suddenly your book was surrounded by "extras." It was brilliant - but who wanted to leave this place?

This room, lined with books and a mirrored ceiling giving the illusion that book cases continued to the sky, also housed magic mirrors. Open the drawer, read the line and the mirror revealed the scene from the line you just read.

I LOVED that many of these books the kids had read AND way too many of these amazing booked have been banned - somewhere - but not in some back woods fascist country - but right here in the USA. The banned books were identified as such. This blatant stupidity irritates me to no end. How can we better understand you and the life you live that is different from my life if we can't walk a mile in your shoes? Sigh... I'm so proud of these kids who recognize exactly that!

We could have spent a couple more hours there - but we had a schedule to maintain so we headed out for a picnic in Franklin Park. Again we had light sprinkles but we found a table with an umbrella in this beautiful urban park and ate our lunch while we discussed Planet Word. The kids were just glowing from the experience and my heart was full.

After lunch we Uber-ed to Georgetown and the Washington Harbor to have a short cruise on the Potomac River. We really enjoyed our driver as he talked about all the things he notices that give him info that we may not even notice. For example in the city, if there are street lights, the speed limit is 25 mph: No street lights, 35 mph. He had lots of information and was very entertaining. He, a 20 year cabdriver from NYC, was proud to tell us that his kids had come to DC to attend college and after graduation had opted to stay . 10 years ago he and had wife had moved here too

The rain was gone and we enjoyed the cruise in sunshine and gentle breezes. It was great to see so many of the places we will be visiting from a different perspective. Below is Katelyn and the Kennedy Center where we will stand on the balcony overlooking the Potomac River, Thursday night.

The Kennedy Center is right next door to Watergate - FYI - so we were able to talk about that too and how the law SHOULD apply to everyone, even the rich, famous and powerful. EVERYONE!!

The photo below is THE water gate that gave the building its name - FYI. A water gate is a man-made waterway that prevents flooding an/or regulates the depth of another man-made water way, in this case the C&O canal. The Chesapeake & Ohio  Canal stretches 184.5 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland, MD. 

The heat inched up and the sun grew hotter and we opted for a break after the cruise so we Uber-ed back to our condo. Next up was a trip to the Smithsonian American Arts Museum and dinner in China Town. We all enjoyed our little rest and with the museum being open until 7:00 PM we had plenty of time. We did some prep for tomorrow and the kids wrote a postcard about their adventures. At 4:45 we headed out again by Metro.

The kids could get ANYWHERE in the city by Metro. We are giving them the destination and then they plot the course. We popped up right beside our destination and headed to the Presidential Gallery. We had a grand time, talking about what we knew about this guy and that guy. Which guy we wouldn't recognized and some of the great things different guys had accomplished. You see I'm using the word "GUY" because everyone of the US Presidents has been/still is male. I certainly HOPE that Katelyn and Sagan will live to see a female in that role. I hope I can too - but tick, tick, tick for me.

I was very proud of our kids as they pointed out protraits of Marian Anderson, John Lewis, the Tuskegee Airmen and many other African Americans who have made the country great.

We closed the place down and then headed to China Town where the kids got a look at the seamy side of life. In China Town we walked by MANY groups of people using drugs. Marijuana, crack and I'm not sure what else - but they were all stoned, dirty and simply propped up against a wall. It wasn't a great scene, but it gave me a good opportunity to talk about it. Katelyn was appalled by the fact that there were two policemen standing just a few feet away - but they were. Anyway educational opportunities abound and while this was not listed as an objective for this trip - here it was.

We continued on to this little hole-in-the wall place and had some of the best food ever!! Well - Daphne didn't really love her food - but 3 out 4 thought it was fabulous food.

On the way home we had a hilarious thing happen when while heading to the Metro - Sagan said, "Why are the back of my pants wet?" Then we saw the water pouring out of his bag - POURING! We stopped and he opened his bag, took out the almost empty water bottle and handed me his umbrella that was FULL of water. It holds a LOT of water!!! Then he poured his bag out - which caused all of us to start laughing and laughing and laughing. He is pouring the water out of his bag - I'm standing with a dripping umbrella and we are falling apart. We just couldn't stop laughing which has its own issues. Anyway - we gave the kids the key to the room and when we got to the street - they raced ahead. We were all still laughing like hyenas.

After we got settled, with the wettest umbrella in the world set up to dry and the bag turned inside, we settled in to watch Part 1 of Apollo 13. It is a great movie but very worrisome...

Will they survive? We will find out on Monday..

OBEDIENCE

The force of the slap caused Zuko’s head to jerk to the side. He tasted blood, but resisted the urge to check…and to hit back.

“Do you know what your problem is, Sergeant?” The riot division chief yelled in his face. “You lack obedience!”

He slapped Zuko again, knocking his head the other direction.

“I am here to fix that. For the next six weeks, you are my slave! You will do what I say, when I say, and in the manner I describe! Failure to comply will be punished! Do you understand? Respond!”

“Yes, chief!” Zuko said.

“Good! Now, prove it! Twenty laps! If you feel tired, no you don’t! If you slow down or veer off course, that’ll be a hundred push-ups and another lap! Go!”

“Yes, chief!”

Zuko ran his first lap around the division training ground, a basement facility in the Big Dog equipped with obstacle courses, mock city streets, shooting ranges, and more. Other enforcers were hard at work, but a few paused to watch him run. He was acutely aware that, at 16, he was the youngest person present, and, as an eXec, the highest-ranked.

He didn’t react in time to the stray boot, and tripped, falling off the course.

“One hundred pushups, Sergeant!” the division chief yelled from his vantage in the center.

“He tripped me!” Zuko said, pointing in accusation at the enforcer.

“Did I ask you for your opinion? No!” The division chief smirked at him with sadistic pleasure. “Disobedience will be punished! Let him have it, boys!”

Zuko realized his fatal mistake as six enforcers fell on him, fists swinging and boots kicking. If it weren’t for his armor, he would’ve broken three bones. As it was, he’d be lucky to get away with bruising and a cracked rib.

“Enough!”

The enforcers fell back. The division chief walked up to where Zuko lay on the ground groaning.

“Do you see how they obey?” he said. “They are a fit, well-oiled machine. You are a mouthy pup, unfit to work in this company. One hundred push-ups, one more lap. Go!”

Zuko knocked out the hundred push-ups without pause, and finished his second lap before another enforcer tried to trip him up. He was wise to it, however, and dodged, so they changed tack.

He rounded a corner and enforcers with riot shields sprang on him. He was boxed in and carried off the track. As before, the division chief ordered them to beat him to the point of unconsciousness. Another hundred push-ups. Another lap. By the end, Zuko was exhausted, sore, and probably missing a tooth.

“Congratulations, pup!” the division chief yelled. “You just got awarded night watch duty! Go directly to the watch office and report in!”

“Yes, chief!” he gasped, and stumbled to the watch office. The lieutenant in charge gave him a uniform violation, but he could sit and rest.

Six weeks , he thought. Just six more weeks .

If he survived, he’d make the riot division chief pay.

The camera crew was asked to leave the room, closing the door behind them. Recordings were off-limits, phones and laptops put away.

Gustavsson leaned forward and put his hands on the table; his voice became clearer, his expression open and honest.

The conversation that occurred over the next hour was as difficult as it was overdue: while we may want the Matildas to be world-beaters, the reality is that right now, they simply are not.

And if you look at their own history, they never really have been.

What we forget, though, is it has always been poor – especially at major tournaments.

Between 2011 and 2020, Australia played a total of 123 games under the tenure of five different head coaches. 42 of those matches or (34 per cent) came against opponents who were ranked inside the top 10 at the time. Just over half of those (22) were friendlies, while the other half (20) were tournament games.

Digging even further down, results against top-five-ranked nations are even more glaring. Of the 21 games played against the world's best five teams across this decade, Australia won just twice (Japan in 2016 and the USA in 2017).

However, this 2016/17 period was anomalous for the Matildas. Their peak was inversely mirrored by the troughs of the teams they defeated, primarily in friendlies and against nations in various stages of rebuild.

Australia recorded seven of their 16 top-10 wins in this period, against teams like Brazil, Japan, and the USA – all of whom were dipping in form as they transitioned from one generation of players to the next, seen at that pivotal Tournament of Nations competition in 2017.

It was unfortunate timing that Australia began to pay attention to the Matildas at this exact moment, when the team was on top of the world, reaching their highest ever ranking of fourth soon afterwards.

This is the hidden weight that Gustavsson, his players and the entire national team staff are having to carry: the burden of the expectations we — including in the media — have been piling upon them for the past decade.

Heightened by the self-consciousness of hosting a World Cup, the meteoric rise of some of its star players like Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter, and the realisation that the rest of the world is getting better faster than we are, the past year — culminating in this Asian Cup exit — has delivered a reckoning that has been long overdue.

Sometimes – the 2010 Asian Cup final win, the defeat of Brazil at the 2015 World Cup, the first victory over the USA in 2017 – those two parallel identities align, particularly when they feed into Australia's "never say die" spirit.

But most of the time, they haven't, despite how badly we might want them to.

This is Gustavsson's other balancing act. He is not just managing a group of players, or a team of coaches, or the sometimes-contradictory FA demands of short-term results with long-term rebuilds.

He is also finding a way to balance the reality of the Matildas with our idea of them; to navigate the volcanic emotions we have projected, consciously or otherwise, onto this team; to try and plot the course from where they are to where we want them to be.

Maybe that's why this Asian Cup defeat – where the distance between those two things seems wider than ever – feels different, and why Gustavsson is the one being blamed.

It is easy to point the finger at a single person, particularly one who has signed up for moments like this. But it is increasingly difficult to justify when you see that all Gustavsson has done is show us what was already there.

While it's tempting to write emotionally about what's happened, to lament and to scold and to bay for blood, it is precisely these things – the feelings, the stories, the hypotheticals, the imagined possibilities – that have led us here: to this chasm between expectation and reality.

It's one that is bending the players to breaking point and one which is turning the community away from instead of toward them.

Because while the Matildas may be statistically average, they are not ordinary. The stories we have been telling about them are not unfounded or useless; they are still filled with spirit and talent and potential.

The Matildas' performances may not have matched the idea we have of them yet, but that doesn't mean they never will.

You've only ever heard whispers of a young site director, a prodigy. She rose through the ranks faster than almost everyone in the history of the Foundation, and the way her thoughts swirl around in your head is like a tornado, raging faster, destroying cities in its wake. She's asleep now, that's what the on site doctors are saying. No one knew [DATA EXPUNGED] effects were that bad, that strong, that dangerous. You stood beside her when it first began to swirl, and watched as it pulled her into its vortex. When she was spit back out, she was asleep. And now, you hear her thoughts, or rather, the echoes of things that happened. Flashes dance in your skull as you wait for her to wake up. She's scared, deep down inside, she's so, so scared. But it didn't start out that way. When she was younger, she was happy, unaware of shadow organizations and the societies that really made the world go round. It's hard to be good for your age, she's reacting almost violently to that thought. 16 and she was far above others. Site director of 18, the one who's always running. You can see in your mind's eye how she was brought to the position, and how some part of her is still worried she won't live up to something as prestigious. It's a glorified storage unit, really, but the benefits she's been given are scary. They're intimidating. She's only 23. You can hear her laughing, feel tears run down your own cheeks, and the chill of her realizing she's more vulnerable than she's ever been. You can see that she's a charismatic, bright young woman when she's not held to expectations she never asked for. You can see she love her work for the Pony Express. She's passionate, and talented, but she doubts herself. Her eyes are yours as she shows you how she looked into the mirror and scrutinized herself. You sigh and close her out from your own head, and hope she wakes up soon. You want to tell her just how important she is to you, and what whatever expectations were set before her have well been exceeded.

Dr. Sora

Static. You've been hearing static for the past hour or so. When [DATA EXPUNGED] was brought out for regular testing and Dr. Sora came into contact with it, you had no idea it would pull them in so drastically. They're not conscious right now, and the site doctors aren't sure when they'll wake up. You're begging Sora to stop sending static at you. You know it's them sending it, who else could it be? The images that crackle around your head like electricity sending fires roaring to the sky crawl down your back all over your body. You're practically begging them to stop, to let those thoughts go, or to let you in. With the last realization comes a part of Dr. Sora you've never seen before. You're seeing their memories from the eye level of a child, and goodness are they on edge. They're never at ease, and you can feel and see this as they grow older and older. You see them fall in love. You see them hiding their love, but due to its strength, the radiance and the happiness they felt towards each other, it's light slipped through the cracks. You can hear the mocking, the jeers, and feel every ounce of pain Sora protected Avasha from. You watch them fall apart, not because they wanted to, but because of the society they lived in. Your breathing times in with Sora's overwhelming static as they get angrier and angrier, and like a burst of energy, all that rage and pure hatred for beings that barely deserve to be called human, it explodes. Chaos envelops their form, lightning, blue smoke, and it levels a section of the forest. You feel the high fading, but their anger continues to crackle. It's not the first time they level forests, and it won't be the last time. Sora has grown to love more than what's good for them. They care oh so deeply. When you reopen your eyes, Dr. Sora is looking back at you. A lifetime of memories have just exploded in your skull. Dr. Sora apologizes, and you ask what for.

Agent Icarus

Working with an agent like Icarus has always been something special, and they've always been good to you. So, when she reached out to touch [DATA EXPUNGED] while under it's influence, you panicked. And now, they're asleep. Icarus looks peaceful for someone who has what sounds like a literal battle inside of her head. You can hear and see things that are beyond your comprehension as you rest near their side, hands folded on your lap in the chair as they continue to project their thoughts to you. They're memories of a place Icarus doesn't seem to know at all. Her wings are folded around her body like a protective blanket, shielding them from the world. They didn't belong to her originally, she wasn't made with them. This isn't the first time that Icarus has messed with a skip that proved to change their life. 2200, being the one that gifted them these gorgeous wings. But, the memories associated with becoming an angel aren't easy. And you don't think Icarus consciously knows that - in fact, you're certain her subconscious is letting you in because someone other than Icarus needs to know. You can't actually perceive heaven, and you're not sure that's because you aren't dead or because it's too divine. There's a war, and Lucifer is by Icarus' side. The clashing of blades, ichor falling from the heavens to the earth like drops of rain blessing the soil in gold, feathers pulled and called angel kisses on the faces of humans they flutter down to. Divine voices are laden with pain. You can feel Icarus' heart stop when the Ophanim stare down at her with their many eyes, fires burning brighter than the sun, singeing their wings, burning them. You hear the screams of Lucifer, his light dimming as he watches her. You can see a light that rivals the north star falling to the earth, watch as it binds to a blade soaked in that same ichor. And you watch as Icarus first lays her hands on it. A sigh escapes your lips. You ask her to give you a break. She gifts you the songs of the seraphim.

Dr. Tjme

You were shadowing her, learning how to deal with a particularly difficult SCP when they touched her. It was a quick forearm grab, and Tjme was asleep. You held your breath as you pushed it off of her, before allowing security to do what they had to do. You're standing on the dock leading to the ocean right now. They tried moving Tjme to the med bay, but her tail manifested and kept slamming into the people trying to help her. They put her back in the water and she calmed down. A memory eater, that's what you learned what that thing was. After you touched it, you gained a portion of it's powers, and now, you can hear and see her memories. The moon is high in the sky in a deep southern Chinese fishing village. A merwoman rises from the sea, exhaustion in her eyes as she holds a wriggling baby. She must not have used her legs for a while as she stumbles. She looks panicked, scared. Her legs are covered in open wounds. She leaves her baby in one of the stalls, prays to a goddess you don't know the name of, before slinking back to the water. She stays until the first morning light comes. You watch the baby get passed to police before eventually landing in the hands of Americans. You can feel the joy she has discovering her tail at 13. And shortly after, how she heads to the sea for the first time since her birth. The ocean, it doesn't love her, not at first. The ancient mer see a child raised on land and turn away. A home she's never known refuses to welcome her. You feel her pain. You feel her anger. You can see the summers she suppressed her nature in response, and how it took almost dying for the ocean to accept her. When you reopen your eyes, you see the eyes of mer out in the distance. You scooch a little closer to Tjme from where you sit on the dock, and they dip below the waves. You hear kulnings in the distance, the chirps of belugas. They view you as a threat, but you smile regardless, listening as their songs grow to warnings and threats. You reach out to touch her. There are now shark fins circling the dock. You do not move any closer.

Nurse Grace

Grace shouldn't have been under the influence of [DATA EXPUNGED] to begin with. She's only ever been on location a handful of times in her relatively new career in the foundation, and it's lucky number five that hurt her. She's resting now. Her husband Sal is asleep at her side, and you're allowed to stay due to the anomalous tie you have with her at the moment. You can hear her laughter, and you assume it's from when she first met Sal. She seems happy, in your mind's eye. The things she shows you are peaceful, sweet, a love story. It's classic. You can feel her heart race faster and faster as Sal leans in to kiss her. You can see the way that Sal looks at her with such deep love and admiration. If you've ever needed proof of soulmates, you strongly believe their love is the only proof you'd ever need to know it exists. And then, it shifts. You see the darker parts, the things that hurt, the things you know she's afraid of happening to Sal. The love she has for this man could rival the being that filled the seas and painted the stars. You see mentions of a cult, and then that whole arc come to fruition. You feel her anguish when Sal was executed, and her relief at him returning. You feel her rage shake the earth when the Foundation takes him into custody. You see Sal squeeze her hand when she negotiates she never leaves his side. You can hear him whisper how much he loves her. You don't like how the Foundation has tried to hard to keep them apart, and you're certain your anger and frustration is leaking into her memories. You can see every key moment in her life and how it's contributed to the woman she is today. Strong, confident, a protector of her husband. Someone who deserves the world and more. You feel like you should have protected her better, let you be the one lost in a dream. But, when you reopen your eyes, you can see her smile, almost as if she's telling you her protection spans to you as well.

do you still take asks? if so, could you explain tanjirou's hanafuda earings? i've seen some people online (like insta and other such places) claim that the design is one of a flower, but i always thought it was of a sun since it was supposed to be like a token for the sun god or something (disregarding possible [and hopefully unintentional] symbolisms coming from ww2)

whenever these people say these, they go back on to the earings being called hanafuda cards, and that hana means flower. i'm not that smart when it comes to japanese things or hanafuda cards specifically, so if you could, can you explain the hanafuda cards and the design on tanjirou's earings?

Hahaha.... my attempted answer to this met so many technical difficulties, this is my third version, I think, hahahaaaaaa. TwT We shall indeed endeavor to keep this related to the original Sengoku period design of the earrings and their relation to Hanafuda cards, though indeed this is a Heisei/Reiwa period production and it's unavoidable that the similarity would be read in a post-WW2 context. It's not that I don't have things I could say on that, but I prefer not to go in that direction either (and people who choose to use the alternate design have my support). Short answer, though: nope, not a flower design!

The sun symbolism and its representation of Japan supersedes Muzan’s birth by at least a few centuries, and in its earliest uses with a simple circle to represent it, it wasn’t even always defined by the color red. The bright color red has been, however, long since symbolic of the sun, so it’s unsurprising that at some point the two symbols came together. No one knows who to credit for its design as a symbol to represent the emperor, but it seems this started in the Sengoku period, same time Yoriichi and his mother Akeno were around in the 15th, 16th centuries or so (but hard to say). The imperial use is due to the Shinto mythology that the emperor is descended from the sun goddess, Amaterasu. (I’ve have heard some KnY theorists posit that certain characters represent different gods in the Shinto pantheon and that Yoriichi represents Amaterasu (who indeed has historical male representations), but I don’t buy into those theories.)

While’s it’s not to say Amaterasu couldn’t be beseeched for healing a deaf child, she doesn’t strike me as the first goddess you’d go to for help with that, so I had originally suspected Akeno might have been more of a practicing Buddhist seeking the help of Dainichi-nyorai (the Buddha that represents the sun, if we put it very simply), or that she might had been a follower of the Nichiren sect, which embraced syncretism with Shintoism and used the “Nichi” (sun) symbolism pretty heavy-handedly (that sect tended to encourage a devout following of women, too). That’s as far as I find relevant to read into this side of things, though, for a look at Akeno’s altar shows us a round mirror often used in Shinto worship (some scholars suspect the round shape represents the sun, too, but it’s not at all limited to being a sacred item to represent sun-related deities). However, religion is and always has been complicated, and Akeno may have been a follower of any pure or blended strain of Shintoism and/or Buddhism.

Tl;dr: Akeno has a profound faith in some kind of sun deity.

After all, Yoriichi says this very plainly on this page in Chapter 186, “My mother was a person of very deep faith.” In addition to her daily prayers for peace, she made the earrings for Yoriichi praying that the “god of sunlight” may shine on and warm his unhearing ears. We have no further definition of this “god of sunlight,” so it could be Amaterasu, Dainichi-nyorai, any possible unnamed sunlight god she might have had faith in (Gotouge tends to borrow heavily from a lot of different religious traditions without narrowing them too far into any particular sect or strain). We may not be meant to read this in such detailed historical context as Amaterasu because it is left so ambiguous, but the art representing the sun is pretty ubiquitous throughout Japanese culture by that period.

And would you look at that, little Michikatsu and Yoriichi were playing a card game! Hmm, I wonder what? While I cannot claim anything one way or another about how Gotouge and her editors saw it or what they may think of it being seen that way abroad, the rays inevitably make it seem similar to the 16-ray naval flag, and the earlier color illustrations did have red lines. However, at some point the design settled into using 11 thin black lines only, with an emphasis in Gotouge’s character design notes (from the first fanbook) on the pooling thickness at the ends of the lines. This feels to me a bit like inky brushstrokes, and there is also design emphasis on the thick lines at the tops and bottoms of the earrings. These details, as well as the notes (cropped out of the image below) about the movement and weight of the earrings around Tanjiro’s face make them seem to have the thickness of light cardboard, which altogether makes them very similar to Hanafuda cards. Most specifically, doesn’t it look like this card featuring pampas grass and the moon?

While Hanafuda does literally mean “flower cards” and there are designs grouped around certain themes (even if the theme itself isn’t a flower, the design will typically incorporate a plant), I feel fairly confident saying the design of Yoriichi’s earrings is not a flower, and indeed the sun.

Primarily because these earrings aren’t Hanafuda cards! Hanafuda technically didn’t exist until after Yoriichi’s time, and was adapted from a Portuguese card game. Said game was initially illegalized at the same time Christianity was illegalized, but the Edo public loved their card games, and reinvented it every time some previous version was outlawed for its use in gambling. Even today, there are many, many different versions or reiterations of Hanafuda under the same or different names. I have never played though, and will not attempt to explain it. ^0^;; (I have cousins who grew up playing the Hawaiian version, though.) It was finally legalized in the Meiji period, and the first fanbook even lists this as one of Zenitsu’s favorite games.

By the Taisho period anyone would had been familiar with it, leading Muzan to describe Tanjiro to Yahaba and Susamaru as “the demon hunter who wears earrings that look like Hanafuda cards.”

While my research didn’t take me this far, I’m willing to bet card games with similar illustrations existed far prior to Hanafuda, and whether or not Akeno would had been influenced by them is anyone’s guess. But as she made them as religious items, that still makes them not game cards. I do assume she used high quality washi paper though, the finest she could afford as the wife of a high-ranking samurai. Good washi is strong enough to last for centuries, and even used to be used for making clothing because it’s so durable. But it’s also lightweight, she wouldn’t want to weigh Yoriichi’s little ears with precious metals or anything like that, I believe!

This all being said, I have most certainly noticed a trend of actual Hanafuda cards being used in accessories, everything from earrings to necklaces to charms to hang on facemasks to manicures. The only time I’ve seen this sun design has been in clear reference to Kimetsu no Yaiba, though!

This went in a lot of different directions, Anon, but I hope that clears things up about the sun and Hanafuda connections more than it clouds everything in unnecessary details. XD

Geten knew she was rusty the minute she raised the lake of ice. In the same way muscles atrophied after unuse, her quirk felt, ironically, as if it were thawing after being frozen for a century. 

Her cryokinesis was sluggish, rigid. The ice body jerked forward and stalled as she attempted a simple levitation towards her. Finally, she returned the ice to the snaking gap in the ground where the water had been. 

She scowled. Despite doing simple manipulation exercises during her hospitalisation, using whatever ice cubes she had, it wasn’t enough — wouldn’t be enough to go up against the might of the entire army. 

As she allowed the bottom of the lake to melt back into water —  something she could still do just as well, to her relief, the thought struck her immobile for a few seconds. That is, after all, what I am seeking, yes? Freedom from this place and its people.

But I am still not strong enough. People as strong as Shingu Takame existed amongst the ranks of the advisors, and perhaps even the common soldiery. If she were to fight multiple of them concurrently, she could be…

Flashes of Mihara Takame’s corpse sent a shiver down her spine. 

“Killed.” She whispered. 

“Who?” Hawks’ voice gave her a reeling shock, creating a barrier of ice out of instinct. Upon registering it as his voice, she lowered it with a scowl. 

“Don’t do that,” She said. 

“My bad,” Hawks replied. “Who died?” 

“It’s nothing of importance.” 

“If you say so.” From his coat, he pulled out a half-eaten packet of chips. He offered one to her, who declined with a wrinkle in her expression and a shake of her head. 

“So, training for the Festival?” He observed. 

“Yes.” She still had to keep up appearances. “Why aren’t you asleep? It’s quite late.”

“Still have some errands to run. Just taking a break to catch up with you, if you don’t mind.”

“It doesn’t matter to me.” She sat on a constructed ice-bench, to which Hawks followed suit.

“Cool. Quick question, why do you always have your hood on?” He munched on more chips. 

“Not always.” She shot back. 

“Ah, you know what I mean.” Even though his tone sounded playful and curious, there was a sharpness in his words that pierced through all pretence.

“I do,” She conceded, “But I don’t want to share that with you. I hope you’re not offended.” 

Hawks waved his hand. “All good, I get it.” And he let the subject die. But the topic only grew like a fungus in her mind, until the question – innocent-sounding as it was, brought her back into her memories.

“Who am I? Apocrypha, a weapon for the Liberation Army.” That was what she said, and a statement she once lived by. 

“A sword has no need for a name any more than a stray dog does.” The words she had spoken with such conviction in front of Shigaraki – perhaps in hindsight, an act of bravado in the face of destruction incarnate…

She made herself shiver. Yet she lived by this doctrine imposed upon her, which she reinforced herself all those years. 

Till now. 

She reached up and pulled down her hood. Besides her, Hawks raised an eyebrow. 

“All right, I get it,” He chuckled. “Not all the time.” 

Geten returned a small smile. He wouldn’t understand. Her focus shifted to the pair of crimson wings on his back. 

“Where did you train?” Geten said aloud the question rising to her mouth. “Did you go to…” What was it called? “A school?”

“Not me. I was...special, you could say.” His tone took on some solemnity. 

“So you trained under a mentor, like myself?”

“You could say that.” Hawks said, after a pause. 

“He must have been good, for you to attain such a high hero ranking, in the public eye.” 

“Ha!” He burst out. “Almost too good...too good for me.”

Geten recognised that look. It was her own expression whenever she stared herself in the mirror as a young child, after she’d finished writing in her journal. Childish habits.

“It was difficult, was it not?” She felt a strange connection between her and him. It was sympathy, to an extent, but not the same way her spiteful past self viewed her inferior soldiers. She sympathised with Hawks, but she also understood his pains of training. Was there some word for it? She couldn’t grasp it.

“You got me. It was. Really was.” 

A silence. Geten was unsure what to say.

Eventually, she said, “I went through something similar, though you must’ve realised that by now, given our last conversation.”

Hawks nodded. After another moment had passed, he said, “I had a friend who went through the same thing with me. He was a fun person. He made things easier.” 

“That’s good,” She said softly.

Hawks must’ve caught the look on her face which she tried to conceal. “Sorry, didn’t mean to make you feel bad.”

Geten waved it off. “He sounds like a nice person. What happened to him?” 

“We’ve went our separate ways. But I think you would’ve liked him.” 

“Perhaps I might meet him someday. Is he a hero?”

Hawks shrugged. That was all he did. 

“At any rate, all that training...Seems like it’s biting me in my ass now, what with the Festival and my assigned task,” He said. 

“Your...Oh.” She recalled it. 

Shigaraki had given the lieutenants and Hawks a more in-depth briefing just this morning, right after Geten left the hospital. There, he assigned groupings and explained his strategies to annex the cities they were to strike, taking out the heroes on guard there and keeping the populace under control. Suspiciously, he gave Dabi a job to be on the backline during the Festival, along with Apocrypha, which meant that Dabi’s other assignment was more secretive than she thought. 

As to what Hawk’s mission was, it was to keep up appearances. Shigaraki ordered Hawks to fight as a hero, against the invading Liberation soldiers. That way, his cover would be maintained, and he could continue infiltrating the Commission. 

“What about it?”

“To fight against people I would consider peers, and with the abilities that the Hero Commission know I have, they’ll expect me to round them up quickly, which means I’d be dooming them to prison. The total opposite to liberation.” Hawks sighed. “I feel horrible.” 

She responded, “They’ll understand. It’s for the greater good.” In other words, they would be so brainwashed they would accept come what may. But she didn’t say that. Judging from Hawks’ creased expression, he seemed troubled by his role in the Festival. 

“For Destro.” She said. 

Hawks looked at her. “For Destro,” He echoed. Standing up, he let his wings spread, pocketing the empty packet. 

“Thanks for keeping me company. I’ve gee to gee. Make sure you get some sleep, you did just recover fully.” He flashed a smile.

“Gee to gee?” 

“Got to go. It’s a shorter way to say it.” 

“But they have the same number of syllables. That’s illogical.” She argued.

Hawks chuckled again, not offering a reply to that, before ascending. 

“See you on Monday! Festival’s going to be great!” Hawks shouted, and then he sped off into the night sky. 

Geten resumed her training, feeling slightly better. At the same time, she tried to push away the thought that one day, when she had abandoned the Liberation Front, it could be Hawks that would be dragging her back into the clutches, and they would have to fight.

Hi, I don’t have much of an excuse. I said a few days and it ended up at least a week and then some. I could get into a rant on writer’s block but you’ve seen it all. Really sorry. Am hoping to make it up to you guys with the next chapter which should be an appropriate dose of Dabiten fluff and angst. Our usual orders as a fandom, I suppose. 

Shoutout to kannra21, kerasion, novella12nite and avirabbit (I know there are others but I just remember these few of you, sorry! ><) for still sticking with this story despite everything. 

Really hope you liked this chapter despite the lack of Dabiten, but I felt that some fleshing out of the Geten Hawks relationship was needed. Because it is somewhat important to Geten’s character. It’s not like something bad is gonna happen, right? ._.

Red Wraith

[Commissioned by @crazytrain48​. Unlike most Arduin monsters, where I have multiple versions and multiple editions to compare and contrast from, I only can find stats for the red wraith in The Compleat Arduin edition from the early 90s. If this is a genuine David Hargrave creation, it must have appeared in one of the Arduin adventures. In the source material, it can cast spells of up to the 20th Order, and spells go up to Order 25. So I figured 15th level spellcasting was a decent Pathfinder substitute. The original is unclear over whether it’s supposed to be incorporeal or not--it’s called a wraith and can go ethereal at will. I made mine incorporeal as default, and gave it the ability to take friends along with it.]

Red Wraith CR 16 NE Undead This rotting undead being appears as a translucent skeleton with red flames for eyes. Instead of arms, tentacles of liquid darkness lash from its shoulders.

When a powerful humanoid servitor of annihilation dies, they may be restored to unlife as a red wraith. Red wraiths can rise from the minions of many evil gods and powers, but all are united by their ultimate goal of destroying the cosmos and the divine order. Daemon or qlippoth cults, nihilistic religions such as Zyphus or Groetus, or mad scholars of the Dominion can all spawn a red wraith from their ranks. In fact, red wraiths often view each other as competition, splitting hairs over the exact natures of the apocalypses they desire and hunting each other down for destruction.

Red wraiths are sometimes referred to as “lash liches”, referring to their most prominent feature. These incorporeal tendrils can drain life and deliver potent touch spells, and a victim of a red wraith may rise as a wraith to serve it forever. If a red wraith is in a position of power, it will keep its dying foes alive for extended periods in order to drain their lives by hand and create more slaves. They are puissant spellcasters, able to switch at will between arcane and divine spells, but favoring those that bolster their armies and rain destruction on their foes.

Red wraiths are often surrounded by large armies of undead, and they can communicate with spies, saboteurs and other agents over long distances through telepathy. They typically keep multiple desecrated shrines within their lairs, to grant them and their undead the defensive benefits. A red wraith typically has multiple plots to hasten the end, and traffics with fiends, nightshades and other horrors to accomplish these goals. Good aligned weapons can injure a red wraith as if it were flesh and bone, and so red wraiths often seek to steal, destroy or curse artifacts of good.

It does not gain any other benefits of the sorcerer class, such as a bloodline. Touch of Evil (Ex) Good aligned spells and weapons deal full damage to a red wraith as if it were not incorporeal.

Bakugo Katsuki tended to let certain work-related things slide past him just to save himself the headache of dealing with them when he wasn’t actively on duty. Part of his work as a warlock was all about using smoke and mirrors to keep the populace at large from learning they shared the world with mythical beasts of all shapes and sizes. So if he was at a party with friends and, after a few shots, noticed the glimmer on Mina’s pixie wings fading a smidge? He kept it to himself. All the dumbass drunkards at the bar would either think she was just glowing with joy or that they were hallucinating.

The lumbering, black pelted werewolf poised on his apartment patio, though, was not one such thing.

This wolf was unfamiliar to him, he realized right away. He wasn’t Deku or Round cheeks, who dealt with the local pack quite often, but he was aware of the more notable members in their ranks. There were only two wolves – Yaoyorozu and Iida - in that pack with black pelts but they bore the tell-tale signs of their pureblood heritage; the diamond-shaped mark of different colored fur at the center of their chests. The wolf before him was sporting no pelt markings from what he could see, but he was willing to wager that the rest of their form was much the same.

A shifted, he thought in mild shock.

He groaned as the beast shifted, gently pawing at the glass door with one clawed hand. In their other arm they had two small pups curled tight and close to their form, two sets of large golden eyes glowing as they stared at Katsuki. In the low light, he couldn’t see them too well, and he didn’t want to push his luck turning on the patio lights. Knowing his luck, it’d be the one fucking time one of his annoying ass neighbors would come trotting out on to their patio and see a huge fucking beast man just standing there.

“God fucking damnit,” he groaned, stepping back towards his kitchen table and swiping the beast amulet from among the herbs he’d gathered earlier, as well as tucking a silver blade into his back pocket, just in case. He made a grand show of latching the amulet choker around his neck and threw the door open, then, once inside, he drew his curtains closed and turned on the living room lights. Just in moving past him, the scent of fire and blood filled his senses, making him wrinkle his nose. Damned mongrel better not get blood all over his carpet! With proper light to get a better look, he confirmed there were no pelt markings on the adult wolf though there did seem to be a small, slim scar over their right eye. Nothing about them seemed feral, though. Most shifted weren’t built for the change and lost themselves, though he supposed this one could be the rare instance of maintaining oneself after being bitten. There had certainly been stranger things in their neck of the woods, he thought dismissively, then glanced down at the two wide-eyed pups.

One pup was a dark red color while the other was a bright blonde, but it was the marks on their foreheads that gave him pause. Dead center on each was a white crescent moon mark, an indication of being kin to an Alpha wolf chosen by Lunestra the Benevolent themselves. His mind reeled through the information he’d been updated on to recall that half n’ half bastard had mentioned his sister and her mate having a healthy first litter of two boys.

His hand started to go for the silver dagger, mind piecing together that this shifted had probably kidnapped the pups from their mother, but the shifted held their free hand up in a placating manner. “I know this looks bad, but I swear, it’s not!” The shifted’s yips and whines translated in Katsuki’s mind to their human voice, giving him even greater pause.

His hand faltered in wrapping around the handle to the blade. Despite the fact it had been a good long while since he’d heard that voice last, he recognized it immediately. “Shitty hair?” he asked incredulously.

The wolf’s eyes lit up and his tail wagged a bit. “I’m glad you remember me, Kat- er, Bakugo,” he stammered out with a nervous laugh, slowly lowering his hand a bit.

“We dated for two fucking years, why the fuck wouldn’t I remember you, dumbass?” he snapped, anger starting to bite at his words. What the Hell was this about? This made literally no fucking sense! Kirishima Eijiro had been one hundred percent pure blood normal-ass human! No mythic blood anywhere in his veins, and Katsuki would know! He’d traced the family line back by at least three fucking centuries!

So how the Hell was he standing here, clearly a shifted that hadn’t gone completely feral, 16 months since their break up?

“Well, it’s been over a year since last we… Um, you know,” he rumbled meekly. He glanced back down at the two pups in his arm, whom had started to squirm and quietly yip. The pups were still too young to make proper words so the amulet did nothing to help with that. “O-Oh, um, the little guys… They’re probably kinda hungry.”

“Do I look like the kind of fucker who just keeps puppy formula laying around?” he quipped back.

Kirishima’s ears tipped downward a bit, his wagging tail ceasing. “They still need milk, but they can also have small bits of meat, if you have some,”

Katsuki groaned and dragged a hand across his face. “Fine. I’ll make the little shits some food. But you’re gonna explain what the fuck is going on in exchange!”

The other’s eyes lit up again and he nodded. “Thanks, Bakugo,” he said quietly. He let out a small huff as he moved towards the small kitchenette in his flat, peering briefly back as Kirishima settled on the carpet. He set the pups down and they hovered close by him. They weren’t scared of him which implied it wasn’t a kidnapping. An attack on the pack grounds, maybe? He’d have to give fucking Deku a call.

But that could come later. To see if he could pry any answers Shitty Hair didn’t want to give up from the damn nerd.

I put a lot of time and thought into this so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! There are spoilers in the playlist and track listing for Winter's Heart through A Memory of Light, since this is meant to mirror the narrative. It's organized mostly chronologically, though a few songs cover multiple books, or reference scenes placed slightly out of order, to better alternate points of view.
