Extension

We have officially extended the event to run until August 3rd at 12:00 PM Mountain Time to compensate for unexpected site downtime during the start. Enjoy it!

Point Correction

The point totals at the end of the fight will not be accurate and will be hidden from view shortly. Site moderators will take a currently undisclosed period of time to go through misrated attack reports and correct them. The newspost which announces the winner will be published shortly after this time. Please be patient, this correction period may take up to a week or more!

confession, i'm spending a few hours each night refreshing the AF homepage finding attacks that i can report as a misrated attack, but ONLY ones where the user's self-rating is obviously too low 😭 i've seen way too many attacks where people rate like. a fullbody with clean lineart and rendering as 'halfbody', 'minimal shading' and 'rough sketch' like PLEASE give yourself more credit im on my knees

Want to know why I never trust the "protect the children!" crowd?

Almost always the people doing really harmful shit, or even very potentially harmful shit, to children are in that crowd.

They're often the type that circulate actual CSA materials as a bizarre gotcha to people they are bullying and calling pedos (as an example, remember the campaign against ao3 staff a while back were policy and abuse volunteers were getting sent this shit).

They are also frequently the ones to include graphic violence and implied or actual graphic sexual abuse in fics deliberately mislabled as General Audiences and tagged in a way that makes the fic seem like harmless fluff. All because they want to harass a group of people and don't care if children and teens stumble upon it. Technically children shouldn't be on ao3 (at least not as registered users since the ToS require you to be at least 13), and generally I say that it's up to children who do go to ao3 to be careful of what they read and mind the tags and ratings. But how can they do that if you deliberately mistag and misrate your fic.

In short, "protect the children" is more often than not a dog whistle. It can be one for the "we must control our children and everything they learn" crowd (frequently but not always evangelicals here in the US) or it can be one for the "I need a weapon to dehumanize, attack and traumatize those I dislike and this serves as both a weapon and a cover for my harassment and abuse of others. After all, I can just say I'm doing this horrible things to protect innocents even though I'm actually deliberately harming or setting up potential harm to children through my actions." Often it's a mix of the two camps. Ultimately, they don't actually care about children, it's just a nice smokescreen.

Again this au is very lighthearted and fun but it will have some very serious moments involving the Blorbos tm as well as discussions of trauma from both ends and I really don’t wanna… gloss it over- or make it feel like it’s just “oh yeah this happened”. If that makes sense??? Bc Cala has went through a lot of shit too and just- yeah—

At least Pop'n got an update tonight, couple hours too late. It's a port of a song from the PC game, Lively, called Stylus. I can talk a lot about Stylus. It's a banger and I suggest you all search Stylus KAC on YouTube. Also look at the EX chart in Pop'n while you're at it and tremble in fear.

Better than trembling in rage at the lack of communication. There's good music to go with it. Though I'm pretty sure the EX is misrated and that it should be a 47

Is there a Chart out there we can give to new fic writers on what constitutes for different ratings on A03?

Lately I scroll through AO3, and see Teen rated fics that have the tags saying different forms of intercourse happen in the fic. That's not Teen. That's Mature or Explicit. If the word implied was part of the tag, then it might be teen, depending on how much is implied and how much is said. Tag and rate fics appropriately! Some readers aren't in a safe place or want to read fics with those things. Tagging correctly is wonderful, but misrating a fic is not good. Writer might be a teen, but that doesn't mean what they wrote is appropriate for all teens. Some don't even put it in the tags! Which is worse! I'm reading a fic that's rated T because I liked the sound of the summary, and suddenly, we have a sex scene! Not what I was looking for or expecting for this fic! If I wanted that, I would go to a fic rated Mature, Explicit, or not rated with those tags! Tagging and rating fics appropriately help people find the types of stories they're looking for at the time!

This got a bit away from me here, but seriously, is there a chart we can give to new fic writers so they have a better idea what they need to rate their story.

so i just read a story on ao3 but i didn't really check the tags, just the rating (G) and completion status (Complete) so I go to read it and...

it's literally porn? like when I checked the tags after they whipped a dick out it literally had "handjobs" "kink discovery" and "porn with feelings" tagged

so obviously i let the author know that they had misrated their work (obviously with compliments thrown in, it was well written)

they come back with a thank you and an "i was unsure how to rate it"

idk man, NOT G. G IS GENERAL AUDIENCES. E IS WHAT YOU RATE SEX STORIES BECAUSE THEY ARE FOR ADULT AUDIENCES.

so obviously i think they must be a new user that just doesn't know anything about the system so i start typing back a reply, something along the lines of "don't worry about it! in the future this is what i think of when rating" and i'm about to send it off when i check their profile just in case and...

?!?!?!?!?!?!

they had 17 fics already, and had been on the sight since 2018. how do you spend 5 years on that site and not "know" what to rate something with explicit actions in it? like i would have taken "oops! good catch! i rated it incorrectly!" as a perfectly fine (and true) answer but wdym "i didn't know what to tag it" PLEASE that's so confusing

anyway i got a good chuckle out of it and i hope that author continues to write, they had a solid style.

Worst Disney Remakes

I am not really excited for the remake of The Little Mermaid, I’ll take the upcoming Disney Junior TV show based on the 1989 movie. Anyways, here’s a list of terrible remakes to Disney movies.

1. Alice in Wonderland This movie kicked off the trend of making remakes to Disney movies common, and that’s not good. This movie should have been a live action/stop motion hybrid, because most of Tim Burton’s animated movies are stop motion. Face it, Tim Burton should do like Jack Skellington, and try to set things right. You know, have remakes to Disney movies very rare. That way, we’d focus more on live action Disney originals.

2. Beauty and the Beast It was coming in 2017, and everyone was very excited for it. I have read that according to Chris Plante, that if Disney keeps beating every other movie studio, eventually, they’ll buy one movie studio, and keep doing so by 2040, and they’ll become a single major studio. I tried to warn everyone not to watch this movie, but they wouldn’t listen and watched it anyway. Later on, I thought Disney wasn’t going to buy a major studio because it was 2017, but Disney was going to buy 20th Century Fox, and they completed it 2 years later. (They should have waited til 2025.)

3. Dumbo This is a live action remake nobody wanted because the original movie was just to cute for little kids. This remake has no stork, no crows, and no Timothy Q. Mouse. It had Danny Devito, the voice of the Lorax from the movie of the same name, Phil from Hercules, and Mr. Swackhammer from Space Jam, and Michael Keaton, the man who portrayed Beetlejuice and Batman. Take it from Dumbo and Alice, they both never saw Platinum DVD’s, and they had remakes directed by Tim Burton. I know it isn’t crazy, and I am not crazy, so there!

4. Aladdin Here is another terrible remake of a Disney Renaissance film, it’s pointless, Mena Massoud did a terrible job as the title hero, Will Smith has been playing as the Genie with no charisma, and there was no Prince Achmed. Here’s a fun tidbit, Alan Tudyk, the man who appeared in every Disney canon film since Wreck-It Ralph, voices Iago the parrot. There’s an annoying new character in that movie, and that is Dalia, and that isn’t good, plus Jasmine is worse that Theme Park Jasmine’s current design. (Disney should bring back original theme park Jasmine because she’s supposed to look like her in the 1992 movie.)

5. The Lion King This is an article on the highest grossing movie of all time, but it’s a bad one. It’s an argument between live action and animation, just like Bee Movie, and Lightyear, It has a bad direction on vocal performances, it made pointless changes to some elements, it’s out of place, and lacks the charm of the original. If there would be more Lion King movies, I’d swear there should be spinoffs made by Walt Disney Animation Studios, which should do better, because The Lion King is the Disney franchise that will never end, just like Toy Story. That’s enough, on to the next one. By the way, Donald Glover, the man who played Simba, used himself as a shield on Chloe Bailey’s sister Halle, the one who’s playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid remake.

6. Lady and the Tramp This one is the first Disney remake to hit Disney+. It isn’t as good as the original, it’s unfair, and there is no original bad kitty song. The original is more faithful and true, while the remake isn’t as such. It isn’t meant to be the same. (What a shame)

7. Mulan This one is a remake to the 1998 movie, but it  isn’t very good. There are no ancestors, no Li Shang, no Cri Kee, not even Mushu.It’s pretty bad for the Uyghurs, because in the 1950′s, the Chinese invaded their land. Also, is was misrated PG-13, because it’s supposed to get the PG rating. According to The abridged history of Disney, 2015–2040 AD , there is a joke about this movie getting a sequel in the Stop what you're doing and listen to Blue Ivy's mega hit, "I Am Destiny's Child"  segment, but however, the joke is coming true! So, tell Niki Caro that we don’t want a sequel to this, because this was a box office bomb.

8. Pinocchio The recent remake I thought was going to turn out the best. I was wrong, it turned out the worst. The reason is it lacks the charm of the original, the CGI animals look creepy, the Blue Fairy was criticized for being blackwashed, and it was Robert Zemeckis’ abysmal directing. The previous offering, Mars Needs Moms bombed so badly, it killed the studio ImageMovers digital, resulting in the cancellation of the remake of the non Disney movie, Yellow Submarine. Now that movie was a failure, just tell Disney we don’t want any remakes to Lilo & Stitch, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, Oliver and Company, and Tarzan. Now that this is done, let’s get to the conclusion

9. The Little Mermaid The remake of the 1989 flick is terrible, not because of Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel, it’s because of Ariel’s sisters being a diversity, Scuttle being a female diving bird instead of a male seagull, the absence of Chef Louis, the miscasting of Prince Eric, and the abysmal directing by Rob Marshall. The pacing looks kind of bad, but the original wins. Just watch the original.

5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something? I don't like first person pov for fic, and i think it's because when i already have such a clear view of who the characters are in my head, having an intimate viewpoint like that makes it a lot more apparent when the writer and i have different characterizations, so i'm not likely to read a fic in first person pov. in this fandom specifically i have strong opinions about characterizations of luke (don't like when he's written as overly ditsy or like a baby who can't take care of himself) and if the rest of the fic is great and luke is a background character i can handle it, but otherwise i'll click out of fics like that. there's too much other fic in this fandom for me to read two-dimensional characters and unfortunately he's the one that i disagree with characterizations of the most. also, at this point i need the spaces between the paragraphs on ao3. i know that normal books are not published like that but for some reason on my computer it's a lot more overwhelming if the spacing between paragraphs is the same as the spacing between lines and i'll click out of a fic over that

9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community. ahhhh i was kind of hoping no one would ask this one just because i don't think i read the underrated/unknown fic writers! the vast majority of the fics i read are by people i follow on tumblr or other pretty well-known names (although i have been looking at the 5sos tag on ao3 a lot more recently!) but! here are a few newer fandom writers who i've read!

@babush-cat has such fun ideas and dynamics!

i'll be honest i haven't read anything by @bandsanitizer yet but i'm so enthusiastic about her fic exchange fic that on premise alone i'm saying she's underrated as a writer

14. Do you have a personal word minimum that you hold yourself too? Why or why not? I do! for ask box prompts it's 750, for ao3 fics it's 1k. i am not the kind of person who can tell a good story in less words than that. some people can (you're actually the person who comes to mind first) but i simply can't. it usually takes around 1k for me at the bare minimum, but if i'm writing an ask box prompt i won't push it just because for me prompts are less pressure and have lower standards

20. What’s your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process? probably moments when things come together! whether it's coming up with a really satisfying detail in an idea, finally writing a scene i've been looking forward to, or writing the last sentence of a wip and feeling good and final about it, i really like moments where it feels like i'm doing something right.

Oh no, is this supposed to be a double date? No, it’s not. Surely that would’ve been mentioned explicitly if it was, right? Calum’s not going into this expecting a double date, is he?

No, of course not. He’s massively overthinking this and he hasn’t even left the house yet.

What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on? that it makes sense! i feel like the choices that characters make and the way that events unfold makes sense in my stories rather than coming from out of the blue or having a bunch of loose ends that don't do anything, and I like that

Rant about something writing related. oh hm. well. geez i'm struggling with a topic lol let's see. i think i am frustrated with the amount of words that some stories take! i'm very bad at judging how many words a fic will be but i think it's stupid that a lot of my ideas take over 20k of words in order for me to properly execute them! i don't have time to write that many words! i don't have the focus for it! some people don't have the focus to read it! i also hate when i'm writing something and i'm like "oh i'm going to do this in 6k it'll be fine" and it's at least 10k, or it's a 15k fic that i thought was going to be 10k, or (the worst offender) when it's a fic that should've been no more than 3k and is instead 6k!!!! the differences in words there may not seem like much to some people but with the rate that i write and the fact that i rarely can stick to one wip for more than a few days in a row means that every word over what i anticipate is a decent amount of time until the fic gets finished. if fics were the number of words i initially predicted they'd be i'd have 3 more fics published by now, and those are just the ones i'm thinking of off the top of my head. idk maybe i also want some ideas that take less words lol i would love to write more fics in the 4k-12k range because those wordcounts are the ones i typically enjoy reading most but i simply seem incapable of not adding other words and descriptions and building the relationship more which takes more scenes and. you get the idea. etc etc etc.

How do you handle it when someone has applied content filters to their attacks/characters incorrectly by mistake? Someone has attacked me (with some quite wonderful art) and I believe they might've done this but I don't want them to be banned or anything so I've been a little hesitant to do anything about it.

We usually respond to misrating reports by reminding the user of our system in private messages and correcting the rating. It is more of a correction than a stern warning! Please report misrated attacks using the report button.

AH! I'm new to artfight and i still feel guilty for the first attacks i've done. they weren't 'bad' to my standards. but i kind of had a brain fart and thought the whole "full body" stuff was talking about the REFERENCES of the characters the artist made. like if we had a reference of a fully body. so i kinda fudged it just a tiny bit! but not too much, cuz luckily i still did fully body either way..? but one of'em was a half body.. either way i didn't mess up too much, right..?

just read a post about how archive of our own is an archive for fanworks and the community around it is rather incidental - the main purpose of it is to store and organize fanworks for future fans, the tagging system is a cw thing of course but it's also a method of organization

and i just think it would be hilariously and delightfully Meta if somebody wrote an au where jon is just a completely fuckin beleaguered archivist volunteering for ao3 and having to organize the shoddily tagged or misrated fanfiction that ao3 occasionally gets

whether this includes the Fears (as tropes, fandom, discourse, etc) or the actual Plot of The Magnus Archives is up to the hypothetical writer

honestly as someone that browses SU AO3 a lot that isn't far off lol. there's some weird crap there, ngl. very glad tags can be blocked lol. there's some nice stuff if you look but I cant blame people for not wanting to dig. good things there's tumblr, where there's plenty of good fic authors, like you ♥

I do love AO3! And I honestly don’t begrudge anyone for writing whatever stuff they want. You know, they’re free to live their lives. No one’s getting hurt, etc, etc. I actually have a guilty pleasure of reading fics I hate, lol. I don’t comment on them or anything. I’m not an asshole. I just love giggling at some of the fucked up stuff people write.

It was more just like “ah, fuck. the fandom’s really dominated by stuff i really don’t like right now” and being pouty. i’d like to emphasize that no one should go around sending hate mail or trying to cancel anyone over whatever’s happening on AO3.

Though I will say I think AO3 is in desperate need of a permanent blacklist feature. I’d absolutely adore having my own little list tied to my account of things I just don’t wanna see no matter what fandom I’m in. But out of all the tagging systems I’ve experienced, I’d definitely give AO3 my #2 spot. Number one is tumblr with xkit, blessed be, lol.

And there’s definitely good fics on there! I don’t want to roast my fellow authors, lol. There’s plenty of good stuff - wholesome, angsty, whatever you like!

Honestly, for anyone searching - if you just cut out explicit and mature you’ll lose some edgier/angstier stories if those are your cup of tea, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything mislabeled or misrated, so you can browse SU with all the insane stuff hidden if you search by T and under.
