Mistyping on MBTI
Introduction
The purpose of this post is to understand what are mistyping and how they happen. I’ll explain some of the patterns ive noticed when it comes to some of the mistypings as well as some of examples ive I personally disagree with. Please dont take any of this as a personal insult if any of these examples I give are things you've done in the past or the typings I disagree with are your own.
Case #1Misunderstanding Functions
-What I refer to by the misunderstanding of functions I mean it's the general purpose of the function and how does this function work and perceive reality. I understand that functions can be complicated and Carl Jung’s definition of Ni can be convoluted and confusing (sometimes just plain vague) however I do think that typing people/characters  needs at least allot of backing up with your knowledge of functions. Usually the misunderstanding I see with each functions comes out in these ways.
Si- Memories/Any form of previously obtained knowledge
Se-Impulsiveness and Aggression
Fi-Sensitivy and Emotionality
Fe-Caring
Ti- Thinking in any capacity
Te-Rudeness
Ne- Quirks and Quips
Ni- just knowing stuff
Tumblr media
Ex-Sasuke Uchiha (ISFP)- Sasuke is often typed as an INTJ due to his preference for Ni-Fi HOWEVER when it comes to how he perceives reality and his way to deal with conflict its pretty clear he is an Fi dom. There is this misconception of Fi=Sensitivity and Emotionality. However this couldn't  be farther from the truth. Fi is simply preferring your Core Values and desire over the other. His goal was always Fi related NOT Ni related.
Case#3 Simplification of Functions
Following the last case this is usually the more common one I see when it comes to mistyping usually people will flatten functions or just straight up default to god awful stereotypes of each type when it comes to typing them. You'll often see people “Trope Type” certain charcaters. Most of their arguments revolve around the aesthetic of the character and then their functions. Which is why those peoples typing will usually look like this.
ESXJ-Mean Girl and stuck up
ISXJ-Boring ones
ESXP-Immature,Dumb or straight up substance abuse
ISXP-Edgy
XNTP-Quips and Quirks but always the smartest
XNFJ-Kind Humanitarian
XNFP-Sentimental mess
XNTJ-Villain
Tumblr media
Ex-Naruto Uzumaki (EXFP)I know I previously typed him as an ENFP however I've been thinking of the relation of his Se-Ni throughout the show and I might change my typing. However thus far every single Se dom argument I read for Naruto reads like this “ Well he is immature” “he is impulsive and reckless” “ can't be an Ne dom because Intuitive=smart and Sensor=Dumb” sometimes they don't say this word for word but their arguments boil down to this. And I find it quite frustrating cuz those same people look at you straight in the eye and say that you're intuitive bias, even tho they are the ones defaulting to stereotypes.
Case #4 Positioning of Functions
Character development in MBTI is more complex than character development in Enneagram. Depending on the movie/tv show the character might either develop their inferior function or their tert function. Which is why understanding the position and model you are using for MBTI and be consistent using it. The position of function is important because they are what defined the person and how they approach data management. Also certain characters might have preference for their tert function rather than their aux functions. Some Characters just use their stack in a very balanced way.
Tumblr media
Ex- Sokka (ESTJ)- He is often typed as an ENTP due to his exaggerated use of Ne in the later seasons. To me at least he is an ESTJ with a preference for TeNe. Sokka never really uses NeTi in the first book. His priority came in form of TeSi (Organizing the environment with a solid metric and detailed positioning of others). His development came in the form of his Ne not Fi. To the point he ends of sticking to it in Book 2 and Book 3.
Case #4 Character Traits=/=Cognitive Preferences/Perception
Often people conflate how a character/person acts instead of how they think and proceed with conflict. MBTI isnt really a personality theory but rather and understanding of your cognitive process and preference. It's based on how you perceive reality and how you make decisions based on your dominant function. If anything enneagram would be closer to an actual personality test.
Tumblr media
Ex- Amy March (ESFP)- I took such a long time to come to this typing because similarly to Naruto people only talked about how she was an annoying immature child. However her monologue points to her stresses and how she must stick to her SeTe rather than SeFi due to how the environment is working and suppressing women in that era.
Case #5 Just making things up
This is the most common one I see when people type characters, they usually just make things up. Sometimes there isn't any contextual evidence on what they are talking about and will mostly differ to broad and vague statements that hold no wait or aren't represented in the narrative. Sometimes they'll just take things out of context and will just go with them and end up convincing people even if their argument is 95% fabricated stuff and the 5% is misunderstanding on their part.
Tumblr media
Ex-Ada Wong (IXTJ)  Ada Wong’s Ti is non existent and no one online has ever written an argument where I there is enough evidence on what they are saying. Ada isnt a person who is interested in analytical process and internal understanding. Even character development comes from XiFi not Fe. Sorry but liking Leon but not really isnt a good argument for low Fe. Her development isnt about understanding the emotional state of the other or in relation to the other but rather the self. Even OG Resident Evil its stated that she struggles with her own values and emotional state . It's almost as if their argument hinges on ISTP=Spy characters.
Case #6 Misogyny (yeah...we are going there).
Often in typology you'll notice a dichotomy between Female characters vs Male characters. You'll notice that female characters are twice as likely to get typed as Feelers even when they dont show much usage of any feeling function. Often the arguments I see its in reference to either showing the character struggling emotionally or reacting in some way to something bad happening in their life. But when male characters such as Homelander and Patrick Bateman who have multiple emotional outburst in their runs but most people type them as Te doms. While Female characters that have emotional outburst such as Asuka and Jennifer Harding (Both Te doms) both get typed as ESFP because=SeFi=angry and emotional. It often happens in cases such as Bakugo who gets typed as an ESTP but if a female character does the same thing she gets typed as an ESFP. Im not calling you a misygonist  if you typed any of this characters like this I just think that you should reconsider your typology process.
Ex-There are allot of these so I just gonna point to a few
Tumblr media
Alice Liddle (INTP) - Being typed as an INFP but very clear her struggle is between Ti-Si and understanding her Fe.
Tumblr media
Nancy Wheeler (ESTJ)- Being nice=/=Fe she has always preferred TeSi (organizing and structuring things in step by step processes) Over using Fe.
Tumblr media
Madison Montgomery (ESTP)- Her character is pure SeTi and her struggle with her Fe is shown in both S3 and S8.
Tumblr media
Yenneffer (INTJ)- NiFi reaching the ideal self is her goal also her Te is very on your face.
Part 2 will focus on the enneagram
Please dont take any of this as an attack its an analysis on things ive seen and read if you are gonna disagree please be civil.

also went on a paddle boat with sister, it was fun I haven’t done it in like 7 years. we stopped by a book store, and
1) there’s a physical copy of A Hero in the Demon King’s Castle which was surprising to me because syohei(/inutoki)’s got really off-beat style so I’ve figured they’d be too niche to be licensed, plus it had a dust jacket WITH author/artist bio AND the extra comics on the actual cover… I didn’t get it because I’m not quite ride or die for it, but I am reconsidering because syohei’s art is just really fun. plus it’s just a well-printed book, how often do you see manga printed in eng with dust jackets? I’ll probably reread it and see if I Really Do Want It. if anyone wants a bit of a wacky read with interesting art, give it a look. I actually… really like inutoki & syohei’s other anthology more because I really like the love interest of the main oneshot but it also has one oneshot that’s pretty vicious to the point I’m not sure I’d actually get a physical copy lol
2) speaking of pretty vicious, a physical copy of one of asada nemui’s works was there which I think is pretty cool, her art is sooo interesting to look at. it’s not as crazy as syohei’s, but it just feels… direct? impactful? just an appealing style. I wouldn’t buy a physical copy of that one, but I’d get one of sleeping dead… I’d consider getting the anthology but she really paired two of my favorite oneshots while having the main story have My Hardline Exclusion Criteria 😞 I’d get the other anthology tho, no hard no’s in that one. where was I going with this? well, if you like strange morose rancid toxic romances, definitely look up asada nemui and also a list of content warnings
3) on that note, it made sense to list manga alphabetically by title back when it’d take up a single shelf max, but I think book stores really need to rethink manga shelving, especially since more bl with smut/het with smut/yuri with smut is getting licensed and distributed
3a) by the way there were quite a few yuri titles, which is a cool change! I already had the one I liked
3b) buy ‘5 seconds before a witch falls in love’ it’s so good. I LOVE the main story. I am lukewarm on the other oneshot. the main story is SOOOO fun, zeniko sumiya has kind of a more shounen-esque art style and she usually draws bl so you need to treasure her fun & dumb witch/witch hunter shenanigans
3c) I mistyped shenanigans as shenanigals lmao that kinda fits still
3a) and the other ~15 I’ve read and dropped because I wasn’t interested in them (I showed sister the cover of SHWD—like, I also want muscular women but I cannot get over some of the anatomy, those are beach balls attached to her chest? like it’s not the aesthetic of Anime Titty Jiggle Physics but I really cannot get over it) but I’m glad there’s more yuri. mostly. I hate that the gamer one is there, the art and writing is so weirdly uncomfortably… H for something that is a SFW slice of life, and I didn’t like a few of the other series that sister pointed out because they were really. too long with not enough sense of direction/momentum to have satisfying character/relationship progression. BUT IT’S GOOD THAT MORE YURI IS BEING LICENSED.
3) anyway I was thinking that there should probably be more a delineation between either genres or age of audience, but at the same time, that’s tricky—having an 18+ section could make it uncomfortable for folks who enjoy being able to browse without a glaring neon sign that indicates they’re looking at smut, dividing by genre can make it tough for folks who want to take a look at gay romances/lgbtq autobio more surreptitiously,
3d) well, I would imagine it’s less of a huge deal now than it was ~15 years ago, but homophobia still is a thing
3) so in the end I have no defined conclusion to my thoughts on manga shelving in english-speaking countries
4) I saw several copies of nagisa furuya’s works! I might go back for number call, that was the first one of hers I’ve read and it’s really cute. I was telling sister, this might sound bad but I like how… standard her art & writing is, it’s very clean and pleasant, her low(ish)-stakes slice of life fluff is really good. also nice to have sfw options for introducing folks to bl
5) this is completely unrelated to this bookstore trip but a couple of weeks ago I saw an m/f romance and was like. do I know this artist from bl??? but I looked up the artist and didn’t see anything I would recognize, it’s just… the way older men is drawn is so…
Tumblr media
5) like I know I’m stupid biased because I read an inadvisable amount of bl but he looks like a guy straight out of my miserable office worker bls. I feel like I should know him from bl. I guess I just forget that m/f fans also like older men because all the josei romances I’m involuntarily exposed to are very (…) Like That
5a) mangaplanet REALLY needs to reorganize its genre divisions. hardcore josei smut shouldn’t be lumped with shoujo. hentai should not be lumped with shounen. guys what is going on there
5) but I’ve been thinking of reading it because even by style alone it looks like it’ll at least be unique m/f (though, if I’m gonna read m/f, my preference would be for a miserable older office lady and kinda punk-ish younger guy, but oh well…) it’s just, the cognitive dissonance of squinting at this guy and being like. you belong in a bl.
6) I need to get back out of the habit of reading bls to pass out at 2am 😔 for a while I finally dragged myself back to sleeping at 1am with my baby leash (screen lock) but I’m back in my bad habits. I could at least look at the unhinged horror m/f racher’s been begging me to read just to diversify what I’m pouring into my brain. oh, also sister gave me night is short walk on girl to read and the writer really did deserve all his awards, his character voice is extremely arresting

INFP enneagram types
Hey Charity! I was thinking about how you said that you think that the most common enneagram types for INFPs are 4, 6, and 9 (I agree). Why do INFP sixes and INFP nines mistype so often as fours?
It's because of a misunderstanding of the frustration nature of 4. Many attachment types think they are 4s and so they write about 4s from an attachment perspective, because they don't identify with the withdrawn-frustration nature of 4-ness. They say stuff like "I repress my intense feelings to keep the peace" (9) or how great it is to be unique and special (6). The actual 4 doesn't like other people to be 4s (that makes them part of something), doesn't relate to repressing their feelings at all (that's not being authentic to my intense moods), is not "positive" because they are frustration types, and is always longing for something just out of their reach. Basically, a lot of 4 profiles are written about 6s or 9s with 4 fixes. So of course, 9s and 6s identify with them and call themselves a 4. A lot of what's attributed to 4 is actually the traits of 9s (seeking beauty in all things, for example -- 4s actually like rawness and realness instead, and that includes "ugly" things -- it's 9s who often want beauty).
How do you think enneagram types 4, 6, and 9 alter the way an INFP appears to other people?
4 INFP - it's all about me and my feelings (good, bad, intense, etc), prolonging emotional states, stubborn refusals to conform, frustration and over-individuating (must stand out, must be seen as different, I am broken and damaged and don't try to fix me); 4w5 is invisible and super-withdrawn and their aesthetic is often morbid; 4w3 is more flashy and extroverted and colorful and "look at me!"
6 INFP - cautious, more of a struggle with their emotions (trying to think about them while feeling them), more analytical, can seem thinker-y sometimes, strong opinions, pushing people or being loyal, but can also be a 'team player' who doesn't draw much attention to themselves; when young, especially, projection, distrust, and sometimes being too self-deprecating / assuming they are "too much" or can't do things, hate change; 6w7 is more outgoing, funny, and willing to take risks and they want more support; 6w5 is more self-reliant, withdrawn, and less inclined to move toward people
9 INFP - peaceful, often does nothing but read books to escape the world, or write stories; fluid boundaries and open-minded behaviors, but they don't see both sides like an ENFP 9 would (they still have their feelings and that's what matters and informs my view); passive-aggressive and stubborn if pushed, doesn't rush into things, moves slow and gives themselves time to prepare, but pleasant; the wing makes a huge difference, 9w8s have stronger boundaries, a lot more anger, and no interest in compromising on how they feel; 9w1s are way more moralistic, hard on themselves, and perfectionists.

"Plants" Process (Initial Sketch | Layers)
Sure, might as well talk about this one, because I actually have a bit to say about it.
So the title I uploaded this with, "Say you will about NSR..." was originally a (*mis)quote he says in the game when you fully unlock the Natura district. The line isn't especially significant, but I've always thought of it as surprisingly "quaint." It's very small, but it serves to humanize him just a little bit when up to and after this point he's dipped into cartoon-style villainy. These brief moments of honesty within his duplicitous nature is a part of why I find him to be an endearing character.
*The actual quote is, "Say what you want about NSR..." but I mistyped it when posting it. The meaning of the line is basically the same, though.
Tumblr media
Due to this line, I've had the idea of drawing him surrounded by plants for a while. My first iterations of this idea usually involved him on an apartment balcony adorned with plants and overlooking the city. Sadly, my visions for the scene exceeded my artistic ability, so it's an idea that's been on the back burner for a while.
Tumblr media
[A sketch I did last year based on the idea.]
It wasn't until I just randomly thought to come back to this idea that I sketched this piece.
But tbh, I don't think my vision was very clear. There's no sense that he exists in a real place (why in the world would a hanging planter be hung so low, XP). All I knew was that I wanted to draw him surrounded by plants, and that originally I wanted the color palette to be very limited.
Very recently, the SiIvagunner channel had uploaded a parody video of the Yona Yona Dance MV, which led me to listening/watching the original video (which I somehow managed to never see up to that point).
youtube
I found the limited color pallet of the video to be very striking, and I wanted to make something inspired by it combined with the experiment I did with my recent Kliff x Tati piece, which also only used about 4 colors.
However, I am abysmal at color picking, so I grabbed a color palette from @/color-palletes (link) to help the process along. In the end, I couldn't keep myself from trying to use all possible colors. Strictly speaking, there's a shade of every color in the rainbow in the final piece, which is about as far from a "limited palette" as it could be. Nonetheless, I think the darker tones of the colors do help to tie everything together, so it feels more limited than it actually is.
To return to discussing the sketch itself, there were a few ideas that changed and evolved throughout the process.
Besides moving some of the plants around, an idea I had that didn't get fully realized was that the three smaller plants in front of him were supposed to represent the game's rockstars: Mayday, Zuke and Tatiana. I had difficulty making that happen with the limited palette: since May, Kliff, and Tati share a lot of colors (notably red), and one of Zuke's main colors is green, the same color for the plants, it was difficult to main the references while still having them all not blend into each other. Perhaps with more time to think through the idea I could have reached a compromise, but as things are, that reference was more or less lost.
To get it out of the way: there isn't any real symbolism behind the plants chosen. They were picked strictly on their aesthetic value/ease of drawing them. If you wanna stretch, the Zuke vase is holding red flowers (poppies), so it's kinda referencing that time his hair was set on fire, but that's totally incidental~ However, I will say that originally that vase was supposed to hold orchids since it's apparently a flower common in Malaysia, but I had difficulty drawing them and settled on poppies. Hibiscus plants were also considered for similar reasons, but as someone who's actually grown up around hibiscus flowers, I knew I didn't really have another place to put them since those plants actually get really friggin' big.
Something else that was lost was the poster behind the snake plant. Originally I had thought to put a poster of Kul Fyra on the wall, but I honestly got pretty lazy about adding the details. That and Kul Fyra's colors would have blended into Kliff hair since she's a combination of reds and yellows. But that space felt so empty without *something* there, so I messed around with random shapes and eventually just landed on putting up some records. It's a generic detail, but I do feel like they add a "pop art" quality to the piece.
To conclude, this was very fun to work on and the turnaround on it was fairly fast. Usually for pieces like this, the process takes me a few days, but I sketched and finished this all in the same day. Had I given myself more time to sleep on this, I might have worked a little harder to incorporate some of my other ideas and clean it up a little more. That said, this is still one of my favorite pieces as of late, and I hope that I'm able to make more things like it.

The Magnus Archives & MBTI Part 1 -- Jon & Martin
Hello. When I was a depressed 19-year old, I hyperfixated on the Meyers-Briggs personality typing system in an effort to solve all of my interpersonal problems.(1) It didn’t work, but ever since then I have been cursed both with deep, useless knowledge and searing, useless opinions. In the hopes that sharing my terrible burden with others will allow me to one day find the rest I so desire, I would like to introduce you today to what is, as far as I can tell, the first dedicated MBTI typing post in this fandom.(2)
The hyperfixation ran deep, so I am trying to make this as intelligible as possible. If you so desire it, this is a great general resource for typing. If you have opinions or thoughts, PLEASE share them. Much like a fear avatar slurps up people’s trauma, I am sustained in part by healthy, albeit occasionally heated, debates over MBTI types. You should have seen the time I typed Kanye West on Reddit.(3)
Jonathan Sims -- INTP  Confidence Level: 90% Certainly (at the very least): IxTx
It is easy and tempting to type Jon Sims as an INTJ. After all, he certainly fits many of the stereotypes: bookish, awkward, out of touch with his feelings and his environment, with a tendency to come off as overly critical. I am not saying that this typing is necessarily wrong, but I do not think that it should be taken for granted.
Jon is clearly an introvert and a thinker (IxTx). It is tempting to type him as an intuitive as well, but I caution against this and suspect that it is an example of intuitive bias. Certainly I do not believe that he has the kinetic knowledge and energy of an ISTP – he hasn’t done a single damn thing in this entire podcast to make me think that he has any higher-level grasp of Extroverted Sensing (Se), the function an ISTP uses most confidently to interact with the outer world – but, if INTJ is in consideration, ISTJ should not be written off.
ISTJs and INTJs use the same auxiliary function, Extroverted Thinking (Te), to interact with their environments. Te is often characterized as being cold, clinical, unfeeling, and pragmatic: essentially, how Jon comes off in the early series, especially S1. The difference between them is their dominant function, or their primary way of existing and processing information. ISTJs are led by Introverted Sensing (Si), which is best conceived of as a “web” (haha) of past experiences and sensory details that a user can access when making decisions. INTJs are led by Introverted Intuition (Ni), which is a largely unconscious and abstract style of pattern-sensing which feeds a user insights about the world around them. For Jon, I think that fair arguments could be made either way for dom Si or dom Ni. Does Jon rely more on what has come before (ISTJ) or what may come next (INTJ) to guide his thinking? It could be either, in my opinion, and it is especially difficult to tell because the Beholding itself is an EXTREMELY Ni domain. As the series progresses, Jon’s choices and behavior are colored so thoroughly by his patron that it is difficult to separate evidence of natural Ni intuition from plain old Beholding intuition.
So, with this in mind, why have I typed him as an INTP of all things? It all comes down to the INTP’s inferior function, Extroverted Feeling (Fe). Your inferior function is the thing that you use but aren’t very good at – it tends to be what gets you into trouble. Fe is best understood as a natural awareness of other people’s emotions as well as the privileging of group values over individual values, so inferior Fe users tend to be sensitive to other people but not super great at actually interacting with them. It is tempting to type Jon as an IxTJ because he comes off like a high Te user at first, but it’s pretty well-established at this point that he’s projecting that persona due to his insecurities. This, in my opinion, is classic inferior Fe. He knows that there is a broader group expectation for his behavior in his new position, but he is (a) too out of his depth to project it naturally and (b) not savvy enough to find a middle ground so he overcompensates and comes off like an asshole. So many of his interpersonal problems stem from this same issue. He clearly cares deeply about group values, other people, and their opinions of him but he struggles to read social situations well and is then caustic as a defense mechanism.(4) So much of his emotional growth has been about him being softer and kinder, even as he grows more monstrous, and to trust others, especially Martin… that’s an inferior Fe narrative.
Once you’ve nailed INTP as his type because of the inferior Fe, I think that everything else falls into place. INTPs lead with Introverted Thinking (Ti), which is a logic-based, internal system of categorization, and they interact with the external world through Extroverted Intuition (Ne), which is a creative, abstract, “idea machine” approach to environmental analysis. In essence, INTPs are logical, systems thinkers (Ti) who basically try out new ideas by throwing them at the wall and seeing if they stick (Ne). I think that describes Jon far more accurately than the IxTJ approach, which tends to be far more reserved and calculated.
Martin Blackwood -- ISFJ Confidence Level: 70% Certainly (at the very least): IxFx
I have found Martin to be a particularly challenging character to type. After a great deal of thinking, and some helpful input from @twinliches, I have gone with ISFJ.
Martin is an introvert whose primary mode of interaction with the external world is through Extroverted Feeling (Fe). He cares primarily about the group and is sensitive to its dynamic, he has a good read on other people’s emotions, and he is able to easily maneuver through interpersonal situations to his own benefit and the benefit of those he cares about. But what is this Fe working conjunction with? As a prominent Fe user and an introvert, Martin’s only two options are to have dominant Introverted Sensing (Si), which would make him an ISFJ, or dominant Introverted Intuition (Ni), which would make him an INFJ. So, does Martin rely on a “web” (badumtssh) of past experiences to connect with others (Si), or is he using a more unconscious, forward-thinking intuition to do so (Ni)?
It is extremely tempting to type Martin as an INFJ, but, honestly, I think that do so is an example of intuitive bias. His actual choices – how he moves through the world and comes to conclusions, the way that he relates to others, the things that he fears – strike me far more as dominant Si than dominant Ni. Although he may not always broadcast it, Martin is shrewd and observant when it comes to interpersonal relations, and his grounded, real-world knowledge of how people are acting, how similar situations have played out in the past, and what details others are missing is what allows him to so consistently outmaneuver the big bads. A Ni user may come to similar conclusions, but they just don’t get there in the same way. Martin is also invested in maintaining social harmony by providing a sense of stability, which is a classic ISFJ move. INFJs are more likely to promote social harmony by using their Ni insights and Fe people skills to actively influence group dynamics for what they believe is the better. Martin doesn’t really ever do that – instead, he works to make sure that everyone is taken care of, whether that means bringing them tea, dragging them out to lunch or for drinks, or sacrificing himself to the Lonely so Peter leaves Jon alone.
I anticipate that one potential criticism of my Martin typing will be in regard to the inferior function. ISFJs and INFJs have different inferior functions: ISFJs have inferior Extroverted Intuition (Ne), which means they can struggle with open-endedness and have a tendency to catastrophize, and INFJs have inferior Extroverted Sensing (Se), which means they struggle with being in touch with their physical environment and can overindulge in sensory activities. People with inferior Se often have difficult relationships with their physical forms, and Martin’s canon and fanon body image issues certainly fit the bill. But inferior Se users are not the only ones who struggle with their bodies, and, overall, I don’t think the INFJ’s broader function stacking fits Martin as well as ISFJ does. Plus, I think there is just as much, if not more, evidence for manifestations of inferior Ne from Martin.
To wrap it all up, here is my final Martin take: Martin is an ISFJ who, if he knows anything about the MBTI, thinks that he is an INFJ. He was probably accurately typed on whatever popular test he took, but he read some anti-Sensor bullshit that included a hackneyed portrayal of Si, thought “I’m not boring and conservative… I can’t actually be an ISFJ! I must be an INFJ.” For a time, he even has “INFJ” in his Twitter bio. Sometimes he wonders if he’s mistyped because he doesn’t totally relate to the stray descriptions of Ni-Se that he comes across… but he figures that, if he is, he’s probably actually an INFP. He really likes their whole aesthetic… artsy, sensitive, caring, intuitive, and his favorite poets are INFPs. What he’s really vibing with here is their Si-Ne, which he can relate to… because as an ISFJ, he also uses those same functions! If post-series Martin is alive (and living happily with his husband, Jonathan Blackwood-Sims, of course), I bet that his increased self-knowledge and confidence will allow him to solidly write “ISFJ” in that online bio. I want that for him. And for all of you ISFJs out there, too!
On a personal note, I also really love ISFJ Martin/INTP Jon in the context of the ship. ISFJs and INTPs use the same functions, just in a different order! They can connect by sharing their Ti and Si thoughts and insights. Jon can help Martin develop his Ne, and Martin can (and already has!!) help Jon develop his poor inferior Fe by giving him an example of a much stronger, far healthier one. It is just *chef’s kiss*
Up next: Jonahlias, Peter, and Gertrude!
--
(1) The actual answer to my interpersonal problems was therapy and life experience. Who knew!
(2) If I’m wrong, let me know. We all know how useless the Tumblr search function is, and I also couldn’t find anything indexed on Google besides the Personality Database.
(3) Kanye West is an ESTP, btw.
(4) I’m not saying that Fi users don’t do this, but I think you tend to see more & genuinely meant “I don’t give a fuck” from them because they’re operating a little more on their own wavelength. I’m not sure if Jon knows himself as well as a Fi user, even an inferior Fi user, does.

Could an ISTP be a 4? I have no doubt about my dom Ti but I'm really not sure between 9 and 4. I realise an ISTP 9 seems more plausible than an ISTP 4 but the 4 motivations and idiosyncrasies seem to fit me really well. 9 isn't necessarily a bad fit but I was just wondering if ISTP 4 sounds plausible or like something I shouldn't even consider. I suppose it's possible I'm (1/2)
(2/2) an INTP which would make 4 a better fit but the Se/Ni axis fits me significantly better, especially in terms of Ni > Si. Regardless I think 4 and 9 are my first two fixes, probably with 5w4 last. Anyway, maybe I rambled a bit. I'm just wondering what your thoughts on an ISTP 4 would be, is it possible?
So short answer, I would expect you to be a 5w4, 9, or ISFP rather than an ISTP 4. You put some emphasis on NeSi vs SeNi being the factor to consider, and while I do think there’s a slight preference for N in 4 (ENFP 4 is far and away more common than ESFP 4, INFJ 4 is reportedly more common than ISFJ, which makes sense but is probably overreported because of mistypes) the main problem with the 4 typing is that dom Ti/inf Fe combo.
The thing about IXTPs is that they really don’t care what other people think. They just don’t really align with a particular role or image, cause they think it’s stupid. Sometimes people forget that 4 is an image type, and that it’s not so much about being unique as other people thinking you’re unique. That’s how you get that internet phenomenon of people posting about like... “dark academia aesthetic” or what have you and then their next post is like an internal crisis about being truly normal and human. They usually know it’s an image (although it’s a little different for Fi doms, since they’re very willing to fool themselves into thinking they’re being authentic).
I’d expect 4 to be more prevalent for IXTPs than 2 or 3, cause counter culture and deep down buried caring about Fe stuff, but probably only as common as like EXTJ 5s, you know? Not impossible just kinda like “you sure you’re not [more common type that’s prone to mistyping as the less common type]”
One thing you touched on here is the motivations and idiosyncrasies. Normally, there’s a reason why certain functions have landed on certain motivations. Like an EXTJ might look at the 5 fear and say “yes, I am motivated to be prepared” and so they go and buy a training manual and learn all the protocols and make sure they follow all those rules because it’s just the correct thing to do, and that EXTJ is a 1. Similarly, I see a dom Ti user looking at being unique and idiosyncratic and not valuing those for their emotional innate qualities like an Fi dom might, but rather for a new angle through which to see things. “It’s good to have lots of perspectives so we can comprehend the entire issue from as many angles as possible.” That’s why I’d expect 5w4 more, because the root of that is again understanding and preparedness. I’m not saying that’s your motivation necessarily, just that a dom Ti probably has another motivation driving their desire for uniqueness.

rules: so it’s answer 21 questions and tag 21 people? i’ll tag a few people, but not 21!!!<<<yeah, me neither, sorry!
nickname: Uhhh I don’t really have one. Katie is technically a nickname because it’s not my actual name. But for real nicknames, the only one I've ever really been given recently is Katic (yes, the c is meant to be there) because I mistyped my name one time.
zodiac sign: Gemini
height: I’m exactly 5′5
hogwarts house: Hufflepuff!
last thing i googled: Goddess’s Silent Realm from Skyward Sword (it’s a good song)
favorite musicians: Honestly I don’t really listen to specific musicians. I like a lot of indie folk music and original soundtracks from games, movies, and the like. There’s really no specific musicians I like more than others.
song stuck in my head: well, I’m currently listening to music so I don’t really have one stuck in my head, though “Bitch Lasagna” has been stuck in my head all day for some reason. It really isn’t no reason; I’ve been watching way too much Pewdiepie this week
favorite time of the day: I love mornings, actually. Even though I don’t like waking up, being up at 5-6 when I’m the only one awake is nice. Same goes with late at night. We love being both a night owl and an early bird.
favorite color: I love navy blue, olive green, seafoam green, and bermuda blue.
followers: I only have 12 followers and I don’t really care at all. I’m just here to repost stuff I love.
following: 112, as of right now
do i get asks: No, but I don’t really mind. But if people wanna send them in I don't really care.
amount of sleep: Uhhh depends on the day. Usually, around 6 hours a day
lucky number: 7 and 8
currently wearing: A blue-grey and white striped sundress with Chacos
dream job: A linguist or something else that will give me the chance to travel the world.
instruments: Well, I play the clarinet and tenor sax. But, my favorite instruments are the double bass, tenor sax, bari sax, shakuhachi, koto, and most percussion instruments. Honestly, I love any traditional instrument or any used in jazz music, though I tend to prefer those that play in the lower octaves.
languages: The only language I fluently speak is English, though I’m currently learning German. I’m hoping to start learning Icelandic, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish and more sometime soon.
favorite songs: It depends on the day tbh. As of right now, my favorite songs are Goddess’s Silent Realm from Skyward Sword, the entirety of the Breath of the Wild soundtrack, Maya’s Theme, Joy, Blues in the Velvet Room, and Living with Determination from Persona 3, Smile, Signs of Love, and Like a Dream Come True from Persona 4, and The Days When my Mother Was There from Persona 5
random fact: uhhh did you know it takes about 4.2 seconds for a silence to become awkward? I was told that by my best friend from middle school like three years ago, so it’s probably wrong but still.
Aesthetic: uh I don’t think I have one
the only person I’m gonna tag is @avocadoapocalypse but if she doesn’t wanna do it then she doesn’t have to. I guess I tag anyone who wants to do it

answer and tag 21 individuals.
i was tagged by @aralcle
1. Nicknames: kassie already is a nickname, so people don’t generally nickname me, which always used to make me sad. my parents and a couple friends call me kass. i mistyped my name as kassue once and my friend called me cashew for like a year lol
2. Zodiac sign: leo
3. Height: 5'2”
4. Hogwarts house: pottermore says i’m a gryffindor, which isn’t as weird as i thought it was at the time, but i always thought (and most people i know agree) i was a ravenclaw.
5. Last thing I googled: uhhhhh i have no idea? but the last thing i googled according to my phone was ‘pokemon go areodactyl’ and yes i spelled it like that
6. Favorite musicians: bruce springsteen (i’m just sticking with one because beyond him it’s much harder for me to pick)

My tritype is 459, but I'm finding it hard to figure out my core type because while I've always been able to spot parts of each in my personality, which one is strongest has varied greatly during different periods of my life. I've had a phase where I was obsessed with the idea that understanding everything on a technical level was the solution to all life's problems, a phase where I deliberately selected my likes and dislikes to try to form an identity and a phase where I (continued in next ask)
(Part 2 of tritype ask) a phase where I was just tried to avoid any kind of conflict. So, what I don't know is how to figure out which of these is overall strongest. I've typed myself as INTP so that makes 4 unlikely unless I'm mistyped, but 5 and 9 both seem plausible. I act more like a 5 when I'm healthy, and more like a 9 when not. Usually, when I act like a 9 it's because I've lost confidence in my ability to work out a solution for problems and just kind of given up. I have the dreaminess
(tritype ask part 3) and vague thought patterns and ideas of a 9, unless I really zone in on a problem, at which point I start isolating myself to pick it apart so I can later return to the world and deal with it properly. I tend to go through phases of extremely focused and completely passive. To complicate matters further, though, a lot of my recent attempts at improving myself have taken the form of critically assessing my values and beliefs, which sounds a lot like 4 integrating to 1(part 4) so it's possible I'm actually an INFP 4 - I don't think I'm INFP, mostly because I understand other ti&fe users quite well but when I try to talk to te&fi users we always end up miscommunicating, but I do have some traits like the strong individualism, interest in aesthetics and emotion, tendency to see myself in fictional characters and so on. I'm not sure I've given enough information for you to tell me which type I am but if you could tell me what to look out for it would help.
----------------------------
Hi anon,
So here’s my starting question: where exactly did you come up with 459 as a tritype if you couldn’t figure out the core? This isn’t an accusation - it’s actually a genuine question because my experience with tritypes has always been that tritype descriptions can be fun but a 549 would look pretty radically different than a 495, for example. I always saw the core as sort of the linchpin and without it it’s really hard to know the fixes.
Overall I don’t really have any insight but I have a couple things that may have gotten in the way in case you’d like to send in some more specific details:
First: I see the word “dreaminess” pop up in enneagram questions a lot and I don’t entirely know where this started, but Riso and Hudson do mention actually that 4, 5, and 9 are all to an extent the daydreamers of the enneagram. Vague thought patterns, meanwhile, are pretty typical of any INTP (or for that matter INFP) so I wouldn’t use this for enneagram typing in your particular case.
Second: I’ve mentioned this before, and there’s never a nice way to say this, but basically I don’t trust anyone else’s typing of people around them. You say you understand other Ti/Fe users well, but for all I know you’re a mistyped INFP and as a result of that have mistyped people you get along with as Ti/Fe users when they’re really also Fi/Te users. It’s a tautology, from my perspective, and so it doesn’t really give me solid ground to stand on. What specific things do you clash on with other people? Do you find them too illogical? On what topics? That is often far more helpful in typing (for example, I’m a high Te user and a sensor and lot of my clashing with people is when they’re being impractical or inefficient).
And finally: there’s not much here about the core fears, and I always believe those are where to start. You do mention that you don’t act like a 9 when healthy, in which case there’s a decent chance you are not one, but I’d want to know what your driving fear is to have any sort of confidence in typing

(Mis)Understanding Type 4 PT 2
Introduction
This is a Rant/Informative post on how people misunderstand enneagram 4.  I would suggest checking enneagrammers type 4 section cuz its well written and its probably one of the best ways to clear allot of misunderstanding plus I'll be referencing it allot...like allot. ill go over some common mistypings ive seen around as well as misconceptions and certain nuances people often ignore.
Every type is and wants to be special its not limited to E4.
“4’s don’t want to be separate, they’re coming from a place of already being so. 4's are unaware of how to modulate themselves to anything if it contradicts their inner experience.” This often leads for people to not understand how type 4s work and end up mistyping others due to certain believe that wanting to be unique and special is SOLELY a type 4 trait. All enneatypes want to be special and stand out in their own way. Especially when it comes to attachment types because “Often the attachment types get stuck to the idea of being a 4 because they are dealing with a type structure that consciously fighting against the unconscious urge to actually be in sync with others.”
Some Misconceptions
“Being candid about traumatic experiences (this can be anyone, but less likely a withdrawn type)
Self-deprecation (this is seen most often in 6's and 9's especially if there's 4 in the trifix, also 7w6)
Being artistic (any type can be artistic, 4's just have a specific aesthetic expression need that's tied into their type structure)
Being depressed (depression and/or sadness are emotions/conditions that can be experienced by all types, even bright 7's, and many 4's are not depressed at all)
Being moody/dramatic (4's do tend to be reactive and moody, but so do 6's and 7w8’s)
Being unique or weird (4's individuate constantly, but any type can do unique and strange things, ex. Lady GaGa is a 7, Björk is a 9)
Being overly emotional (all types have emotions, not all types identify with them, but type 6 as the most outwardly emotional type in some cases)
Enduring pain on the inside and having to smile on the outside (this is highly 9ish and not ever 4ish)
Feeling detached from mainstream things (this is true of 4, but any type can be sardonic and biting about "basic" people or mainstream things, type 6 for example can either be the one doing what everyone else is doing or the one who's sarcastically speaking out against it)
Fearing being flawed (4’s feel that the world is shallow and flawed and they are too deep for it, this creates a frustration and fantasy around their superior self-image)”
All of this is taken from the enneagrammers section on enneagram 4 link below.
Mistyping 4s
When it comes to 3s- Two common mistyping when it comes to attachment types are Pearl (ESFP 3w2 so/sx) and Asuka Langley Soryu (ENTJ 3w4 so/sx) Being typed as  4w3 sx/so. Due to their need to stand out HOWEVER their need to stand out and be their BEST SELF Pearl being a Star who is seen as great and love by the public while Asuka being the best EVA Pilot and proving her competency. While a sx 4 would present an image of brokenness and sadness look at Prince Zuko for example (ISFP 4w3 sx/sp) he presents an Image of brokenness and constantly over indulges in anger and melancholy. Also Pearl and Asuka a wtihdrawn type...no. Both of these two are way too expressive to be 4s. Also very clear attachment types. In Asuka’s case we see she searches for love in being the best Eva pilot and creating interpersonal relationships in school while Pearl does this through status and becoming a Star.
Tumblr media
When it Comes to 6s- a common mistyping I see its Mitski (INFP 6w5 sp/sx) Due to the self preservation 6 being on the most reserved side of things and both can complain allot due to both being in the reactive triad however when it comes to separating and differentiating these types is that a 6 is still craving connection (due to being an attachment type) and 4s are a rejection type while sure they want to make connection they might negate it all together. Also 6s are incredibly interested In problem solving and are interested in dissecting an issue while 4s dont really care about problem solving “However, 6's will still display a need for acceptance, a fear of being cast away, and they will emphasize how different/problematic they are as if it's a problem/danger to be put on the table right away. Even when 6's are at their most negative, they still tend to be funny and likeable.”
Tumblr media
When it comes to 7- I typed Jules Vaugh as a 4 in my ENFP characters post and I might go back on that however for a very clear mistyping of a 7 as a 4 is Laurie “Theodore” Lawrence from little woman 2019. In my opinion Laurie is a ISFP 7w6 sx/so rathe than a sp 4w5. The differences between 4 and 7 are a bit more notable even tho both of them are frustration types. 7s tend to be highly positive individuals who are constantly looking for good expiernces and understanding of the world. 4s on the other hadn't complain about what they don't have and focuses on the negative aspects more. 4s are withdrawn types while 7s are positive types. I just dont get how Laurie is a 4 im sorry. I thought his journey was very clear that Amy pushed him to integrate to his 1 while he was wasting his life and talents. it
Tumblr media
Comes to 9s- This is probably the most continuous out of the previous type you'll notice that most 4s in media are probably mistyped 9s (I myself mistyped Amanda Young From the Saw Franchise as a 4w3 when it makes more sense for her to be a 9w8 sx/sp) But the most common mistypings ive seen in this case is Wanda Maximoff (INFP 9w8 sx/sp) and Camille Preaker (INFP 9w8 sx/sp) Mostly you'll see them typed as 4w5 sp/sx or sx/sp in Wanda’s Case. 4s tend to hate masking their disdain for things and others while 9s tend to present a more calm exterior. In the case of Camille and Wanda both Sx 9s they care about interpersonal relationships and dont have the boundry in interpersonal relationship 4s have. They see themselves as specially unique in comparison to orders. Due to being in the gut type 9s are prone to anger and tend to struggle with this. A thing we see with Wand and Camille struggle with. Both of them go into a haze of sort when it comes to dealing with problem rather than dealing with them like any assertive type like 4 would. Also it's very clear that both of them are attachment types not frustration types.
Tumblr media
There are some other mistyping such as 8 vs 4 but I just think that’s plain misunderstanding.

Rules: just answer these and tag some people
tagged by @venusian-prince
MBTI type: my most recent guess is istp
Enneagram (with tritype If you know it): honestly can’t tell if it’s 4w5 or 5w4; currently guessing 5w4 because of disintegration to 7. and tritype would be either 4w5 5w4 1w2 or 5w4 4w5 1w2
Instinctual variants (iv): sx/sp. the one thing i’m 99.9% certain of.
Fav fix of your tritype: probably 4 because of the ~*aesthetic*~
Do you think your iv’s blindspot gives you many problems: eh, it does make me socially inept but like...I don’t care
there’s also the so-blind issue of never feeling like you “belong” anywhere because you’ve been excluded from social groups too many times during of your childhood. it’s a sore spot i guess but as you get older you learn to get used to it and stop caring about it so much.
What do you like about your type the most and what do you like the least:
MBTI- I looove Se. so much. and I love the interplay between Ti and Se; makes you a pretty handy person to have around. As for what I dislike: lower Ni is.....a trip. Inferior Fe is...hmm.
Enneagram- like I said above, I like the emotional intelligence and ~~aesthetique~~ of 4. 5 is great because of its inquisitiveness and thirst for knowledge, and I like the high standards my 1 fix gives me. and...we all know Sx/sp is the best variant stack.
That being said, 4 also gives me the tendency to be whiny and arrogant, 5 makes me an Actual hermit (and disintegration to 7 is........hairy), and those same high standards from 1 can sometimes be straight up unreasonable, yet I barely feel the need to change them. Dom Sx is good except for when you lose interest in something and get intensely swept up into your next interest...and then it happens again in a few weeks, and then again....eventually you might return to it but it’s exhausting sometimes.
A song that reminds you of your type:
idk about songs but Prince is dom sx 4 culture
What colors, smells, animals, etc do you relate to your type:
istp- like....skateboards and concrete and shit but also those sparks when you hit rocks together, being outside and feeling one with nature, prototype sketches, those like truck loading docks on the back of buildings, tapping complex rhythms with your hands, photography, this is like extremely stereotypical but taking things apart completely and examining the individual parts to see how they fit together, like a computer mouse or something. sunglasses, cats
4- artsy shit....like watercolors spilled everywhere but in an aesthetic way, peacocks, emo kids, Prince, most musicians actually, that avril lavigne video where she says she doesn’t consider herself punk because it’s not punk to say that you’re punk, the whole “poseur” bullshit in scene culture from 08, jack skellington, hot topic in general, Liberace, tumblr in general, the color gray for some reason, shadows, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a city street
5- robots honestly. green and orange, science projects, rubix cubes, doritos LMAO, fast typing, big books, the smell when you open a certain kind of book (not sure how to describe it but it’s usually  books with pictures so maybe it’s the picture ink? idk), knowing a fuck ton of “random” facts, wikipedia, gamer dudes, aquariums (aquaria???), wood, the sound a mechanical pencil makes when it’s writing
1- tall buildings, protesters, cold, the color white/off-white/tan, coffee, click clacking of heels, quiet churches, owls, sirius, that feeling when you get pissed off and can feel your shoulders tense, glasses, the type of person who says “leitmotif”(i guess this doesn’t apply if they’re german lol) (pretentious), when you’re speaking passionately about something and your eyes light up
Sx/sp- classic rock. the entire genre is just so dom sx. smoldering logs, the smell of woodsmoke in the distance, motorcycles, dark roads, driving late at night blasting music, driving with your hand at the top of the wheel and arm locked (this is bad, don’t do this), weight training, clouds floating past the moon, lighters, leather, also sunglasses, flannel, eyeliner, stargazing with someone you love, tigers and other big predator cats, that thick humidity in the air before a thunderstorm
Boards of your type, do they seem accurate to you:
I think most of the istp ones are geared towards 9s and seem kind of empty and cold, so...no? but the enneagram and sx/sp ones usually do.
What is MBTI and Enneagram for you:
funny me-mes but also an avenue of self discovery; it’s helped me recognize some of my issues so that i can work on them. it’s also just fun to learn about.
Do you relate to your type stereotypes:
yeah, mostly. that’s kind of what made me start to think i’m a five LOL most of the stereotypes fit.
How long have your been studying this stuff: hmmmmmm like 2ish years maybe? not sure.
Any mistypings:
I thought I was an INFJ for years, and I also thought I was a 471. and who knows, I wouldn’t put it past me to have misunderstood something about my current types and wind up being mistyped lmfao
Other pseudosciences you know/like: hmm.... I don’t actively hate the ones that don’t hurt people (anti-vax, holocaust denial, diet culture, polygraph, mbti when it’s used in the workplace (such as firing someone because they’re not an entj or something), certain vegans) /the environment (climate change deniers)/actual sciences. i do think astrology is fun, i used to be very into it until i realized that most of the descriptions are intentionally vague and can apply to almost everyone in some ways. uhhh aromatherapy is nice, not because it works but just because i like having an excuse to smell pretty things. also hypnosis if that counts.
idk who’s done this so if you have then....ignore this i guess lol

Can you explain further why you think so many 6s and 9s mistype as 4s?
It’s partly because 6s and 9s feel resentment at feeling the ‘external pressures’ hard upon them by being that type, which leads them to develop a militant ‘I am not you / like that / unique’ standpoint that identifies with the 4 profiles, and partly that many 4 profiles miss the point of 4 and focus too much on the wrong side of 4. The “I want to be special and unique” is universal -- and highly sought after by 6s and 9s in particular, because both have fears about being not-special or “seen” for themselves.
Some Enneagram teachers and books reduce 4 down to “I don’t want to do what you do, so I won’t.” Well, a 6 might do that out of their own contrarian nature -- which is an inborn thing built into their defense mechanisms: if you say black, I say white, if you do this, I do that, which can to someone who doesn’t really ‘get’ 4 look 4ish since it’s all about me as separate from you. 9s might do that out of finally having had enough, or because as a gut type, they can FEEL in their soul what you want from them and are tired of giving it to you or think they have to fend it off -- because their natural desire is to merge.
The two types who feel the most like their sense of self is placed ‘outside’ themselves then show defiance by typing as a 4. The ‘independent and special’ typing, but they don’t realize the heart of 4 is self-sabotage and brokenness. The 4 expects rejection and puts themselves in the path of disappointment, as a self-fulfilling track of rejection-anticipation -- OR they develop a “they won’t want me anyway, so why bother, they can’t understand me anyway” mindset that becomes arrogance and elitism to cover up insecurity. A lot of 4 profiles erroneously also focus on truth, beauty, and optimism -- when that is the anti-4 and far more like a sexual 9 (or, you know, other types who like aesthetics). A lot of actual / real 4s focus on what is sad, wrong, ugly, or absent in life, because that is ‘truth,’ and that is ‘authentic to human suffering.’
It’s way easier to cling to something you are not, that doesn’t make you feel like someone has exposed all your secrets and cut you open for everyone to sneer at, than it is to face what kind of ‘dumpster fire’ you are and realize the things you tell yourself are a lie. The biggest give-away between 6s who think they are 4s and real 4s is the “we can be weirdos together” vibe the 6s give off. They turn being “weird” into something to celebrate, when in reality, being weird, estranged, and not like you isn’t something 4s enjoy -- it’s something that gnaws at their gut, because they feel like an alien born on the wrong planet, that you have things they will never have, happiness they will never find, and their only way to cope is to cling frantically to certain Big Feelings to block out the things they REALLY don’t want to feel. (I’m not gonna cope with my fears of abandonment, so I’m going to have a meltdown about my triggers instead.)
That song “This is Me” that seems so 4ish in The Greatest Showman? 6-who-thinks-they-are-a-4 song. Why? “Let’s all be freaks together!” Community. The 6 is looking for community, for friends, for outside sources to rely on, for a place to feel safe. The 4 is all about me, myself, and I, separate from you, and does not make their brokenness a way to connect to others. In fact, they would despise the very thought of that. One Enneagram teacher joked that out of all the 4s he’s met, he’s never met one like anyone else. Well, they wouldn’t be, would they? They’re all rejecting something in society, in their own way. To isolate, increase separation from ‘other,’ and turn their brokenness into a shield.
I have probably mistyped some other types in the past as 4s who aren’t -- the one that comes immediately to mind is Viola from Shakespeare in Love. Back in the good old days of ignorance when I thought 4 meant “I love depth and beauty and yearn for more marvelous things” I probably assumed 4 for her -- but now, just in thinking about her, a sexual 9 comes to mind. She covets a deep emotional connection and merging with someone special, to be absorbed in the beauty of poetry -- but she is obedient (and sees her acts of defiance as incredible experiences, because she’s never dared to do these things before), well-mannered, and willing to go back to her former life when the affair ends. Now that I have a better idea of what 4 is, I may have to rethink some characters in those tags -- the actual 4s are very obvious (Anne Shirley, Mary Shelley, Marianne Willoughby, etc) which means some others may be... wrong.
Ah well. What else have I got to do, right? ;)

An Open Letter.
Hello everyone.  I just want to write an open letter in response to my social instinct post and the type changes in my bio.  Ok, so yes I did mess up the social variant thing.  I am not social blind at all.  After doing some research I have learned I am a 4w5 sx/so.  I guess I’ve discounted sx 4 in the past because they are always painted as the picture of “more angry than 8″ and creatures full of jealousy towards others.  That simply isn’t the case.  There are so many misconceptions about sx 4s. (Will discuss in a later post.)  There are also many misconceptions about the instinctual variants, especially sx/so, (will discuss more in another post as well).  Basically, I can relate to having social as the second “creative” instinct because I do enjoy dabbling in social environments and sharing my interests with others.  I can also relate to the way the social instinct sometimes blocks the sx instinct from coming through, causing problems in the sx/so.  I guess the main reason I thought I was an sp 4 is the description that they hide their emotions behind a stoic facade.  I do this, but it’s not from the perspective of the sp 4 to suffer quietly to earn love, but rather to hide the painful intense emotions for fear of social rejection.  This makes a lot of sense with my tritype with wings as well.  As for the 9w1 part, I read BlissStream’s description for the 9w1 sx/so, and it exposed some of the DEEPEST PARTS OF MY SOUL, AHHHHH!!!  It’s not the main part, because I’m not a core 9, but it explains all the embarrassing, ugly things about me as well as the obsession with music. (!).  This type update makes so much sense to me, I feel like I have finally found myself.  I do not see myself mistyping and/or changing my type anytime soon.  I do not like doing that, as I know many of you like bloggers that can be trusted with the knowledge of the types.  But that is the most beautiful thing about the mbti and enneagram, it is this endless path of self-discovery and the deeper you dig and more you learn about yourself and others around you.  I am still learning and growing in typology, along with many others.  It is a joy to learn and explore typology here on tumblr with you.
P.S- I am on Easter break now, so aesthetic requests are open. ;)

I'm just curious. What are your thoughts on each countertype in enneagram? Like for example are there things you admire about sp 4's (I'm an sp 4) and what do you think of them? Positive opinions? Negative opinions? Things they need to work on? Sometimes perceptions of counter types are bit odd or a bit harder to set down and type due to how, ya know, counter their set fears.
Beatrice Chestnut is the only person I have seen, so far, to propose a counter-type for any type other than 6 (with the counter-phobic 6 being the “fake 8″ in that they attack things rather than run from them)... and some of what she says about the counter-types seems to go against the basic nature OF that type. Meaning that, for example, her sp 4 is more like a 9 with a 4 fix, since being quiet about your feelings in consideration of the judgment of others is more 9ish than 4ish (4s pretty much are militantly deep in their feelings and not inclined to be quiet about them... unless there is a strong 9 influence, in which case there is a 4-9 tension of “I don’t exist, nobody sees me, oh well”).
That being said, the usual sp4 description focuses on being picky about aesthetics and somewhat over-indulgent as a method of self-pampering, which is more 4 + self-preservation. When I think of an sp4 along those lines, I think of Madame Bovary being miserable in her marriage and making up for it by purchasing things en masse in her desire to surround herself with beauty and luxury and going into debt to make up for the emptiness of her life -- which as you can see, is a bit different from Chestnut’s “long-suffering, silent 4.” (Some 4s, such as Ennegrammer, have also complained that her “counter-type” 4 has contributed to a lot of 9s mistyping as 4s, but I digress.) My opinion of them is -- they interest me, in that I can relate to the self-indulgence sp-dom tendency to want what you want, when you see it, and you intend to have it now, because waiting is not your forte and whatever ‘needs’ you feel you have are immediate, especially as relates to your physical, mental, etc., comfort.
I think her only counter-types were sp 4, sp 2 (which is more about being cute and childish to earn love and attention -- which works for someone like Cynthia from Wives & Daughters, who goes all wide-eyed and gets men to buy her things, but in reality is probably closer to the Riso description of the 2 who aggressively -- without being asked -- takes care of everybody’s physical needs other than their own, rather like a bunch of the 2s who show up on Queer Eye over-worked, under-appreciated, and exhausted from taking care of their families) and the social 7 (who goes against gluttony by trying to be good and unselfish and giving YOU the big piece of cake that THEY want -- seems valid) and social 8 (who goes to bat on others’ behalf, like Martin Luther King Jr).
I think there’s SOME credibility to her counter-types theory, but that it’s important to consider WHY such a counter-type might exist -- ie, sp4 is most certainly a 4 and 9 tritype combination; her sp 2 has a 6 with it (please take care of me :); and the soc 7/8 descriptions probably have 2 in their tritype, else their focus would not be as much on serving others’ needs.
Sp-doms in general need to work on being less closed off and realizing others and their needs are just as valid as the sp-dom’s guardianship of their own resources. :)
