"I don’t sleep, I just dream.”

Marty could tell, now, when Rust was actually sleeping. His features softened. His breathing evened out, and the half-formed words and nervous utterances dropped away from his lips. Not every night-- some nights Rust’s brow still furrowed and his mouth twitched off to the side, silently talking through horrors behind his eyes. Some nights he kicked Marty so hard in the shins and out of his own dreams that Marty wondered if he’d have been better off staying single, or at least buying a bigger fucking bed. Maggie had never fucking left bruises on his ribs with her fucking elbows, but then again, Maggie wasn’t Rust Cohle.

Who fucking was.

But when Rust was still-- at some kind of peace, maybe for the first time in his goddamn life-- sometimes Marty found himself awake anyway. Just watching. His own breathing slowing in time to Rust’s, the blue-grey light reflecting off the highway outside and onto Rust’s cheekbones.

Sissy-ass pansy-ass behavior, to be sure, watching another man sleep. Gayer somehow than the actual sex.

Whatever.

It brought him peace, too.

Rust’s heartbeat, slow. Hair falling in brown-and-silver tangles over his forehead.

Hard not to believe looking at him like that, that maybe, just maybe, there really was some grace and forgiveness to be found in the steady turning of the earth.

A day late and a dollar short for Vice Day, but the last request I got (from our very own Vice Day organizer, @yodeleyewho ) was for a Vice/Starsky and Hutch crossover
