An AU where Celestia sent Sunburst to Pony ville instead of Twilight Sparkle.

Optional ramblings-

An AU were Twilight didn't hatch spike and the sonic rainboom happened rather differently. Twilight is Celestia's personal student on merit alone, the Sonic rainboom not happening during her test.

Celestia has always been attentive of all students at her school for the gifted, not just her personal student. Sunburst has been in her school ever since he got his cutie mark. He hasn't been socializing, and his grades have been dropping as he starts to isolate himself away from the public. Celestia has decided to give him the task of the summer sun celebration this year in hopes he'll break out of his shell and make some friends.

Among his circle of scholars, Luca Solebello carries the reputation of being quite an eccentric; his passions align more with the arcane. However, his pursuits of studying magical history are passed off as supernatural nonsense, and Luca spends most of his time shut away in his archives with his nose buried in a book. Otherwise, he'll daydream about the day he earns the respect of his colleagues and leads an excavation into the magically potent fields of Kansas.

Honestly I think it would have been really compelling to have Starlight Glimmer go down the Cutie marks are bad route in the case of how ponies view them as absolutely necessary parts of being a pony, that cutie marks can have bad effects on ponies, and there is magical illnesses based around them. A social commentary on how cutie marks are a sign of status, and how cutie marks are not inherently good.

It could have been a case of Starlight started with good intentions, but things spiraled out of control and her good intentions started leading her down the path to hell.

And to keep Sunburst included in the narrative, maybe Sunburst got a cursed cutie mark like Trouble shoes did. And Starlight got her Cutie mark looking for a solution for Sunburst, she found it but not in the most ethical way. Maybe the cult she created was a very unethical way to try and perfect the spell before using on her best friend, maybe she got in over her head with the things she was promising ponies. Starlight Glimmer and the cult of magical/medical malpractice

But they kinda just shove cursed cutie marks like trouble shoes and the cutie pox under the rug and go “what are talking about that never happened” after Starlights debut
