Ten years ago I made a pandan mochi cake from a recipe from my friend Lisa’s community cookbook from her small town in Hawaii. It was light and fragrant; the best! So I was so excited to see this mochi cake mix at Trader Joe’s at this time when my time and access to Asian ingredients is somewhat limited. So last night I popped on a sheet mask, selling sunset on Netflix and made this mix, with sprinkles of candied hibiscus in top. Not only did it leak out of my springform and make a mess, the cake is hot garbage. Matcha mochi cake (dairy-free) recipe testing wasn’t really a success but cause it’s matcha 😍🍵 had to take a photo. Matcha flavor was overwhelmed by the coconut, thus the generous sprinkle of matcha powder, which sort of did the job, but ratio still needs work. Did I wait for after the photo to take a bite? 🌸CW: toji dirty from a mission, reader being a huge softie for animals, toji tryna be stern but failing, FLUFF

The moment the door of your apartment opens, you freeze as Toji walks in, all dirty and bloody from another mission. He looks exhausted and in need of a warm shower. But you stay unmoving on the couch as the cat comes out of hiding to brush herself up against his legs, and the lovebird flying to rest on Toji’s shoulder.

Ignoring the animals, Toji walks straight to the living room where you’re seated on the couch. He cups your chin and lifts your head slightly to drop a kiss on your lips. But when he finally notices how unresponsive and still you are, he frowns and pulls back to look down at you. He scans your face for a few seconds before cocking an eyebrow.

“What?”

You nibble on your bottom lip and look away. Toji is about to probe you again when you hear some scuttling and a door creaking open. Little excited taps on the floorboards make Toji turn to the corridor of the rooms. He is staring at the little creature in indignance, but he watches it dumbly until it barks and circles his feet, its tail wagging happily in the air.

Toji immediately whips his head to you. He looks furious. Before he gets to scold you, you quickly grab onto his wrist and speak up.

“He was abandoned because he walks funny, Toji!” You look to the puppy and Toji does so too. For a long moment the both of you simply watch the happy puppy limp around Toji. Then, you turn to him. “Please, Toji, can we keep him?”

The man turns to you with a stern frown. “I told you no more after the lizard, and you promised me okay.”

The first time you brought back the injured lovebird, Toji had already been skeptical. But he knows how soft your heart is, and you had promised him you would let it go after it recovered. Not only did that never happen, but Toji also pretended to forget about his promise because he had also grown quite fond of the black lovebird.

But then you brought home a kitten a few months later, and Toji was even more skeptical this time. You had to cling onto his back and beg him the entire night for him to sigh and squat down to play with the kitten. When he saw how cute the animal was, he relented but pointed his finger at you to warn you that “no more animals are allowed into this house.”

But a year later, your friend was moving and needed your help taking care of his gecko lizard. Toji was okay with that until your friend kept ignoring your calls and messages to come pick the lizard up and now you are the mother of the cute little lizard that Toji hates. And the lizard was supposed to be “the last of them.”

But you couldn’t help yourself today when you saw the puppy roaming about sadly with a limp in every step. You knew Toji would not approve of it but you had to try, right?

“Toji, please! He will be the last one, I promise!”

Toji rubs his face tiredly before frowning at you. “That’s what you said the last time, baby. Our place is going to smell like a zoo if this keeps up!”

You whine and shake your head. “I will take care of them! Our apartment will not stink, I promise!”

“Baby…”

You hear his sigh and you just know that he is going to go off on you and eventually still say no to the idea of keeping the puppy. So you pout your bottom lip out at him.

“And you’re always gone for hours in a day. Don’t you think I would need some company?”

Toji looks at you deadpanned. “I’m sure you have plenty of company already, Princess.”

You ignore the way he glances around at the animals. You finally give up as you stand and stomp your foot. You grab his dirty black shirt and whine, “Please! I want to keep Mochicakes!”

Toji looks amused now. “You named him Mochicakes?”

You pout even more as you bob your head, going closer to him. He automatically rests a heavy hand on your waist, his thumb stroking your curve. You bring your hands together now as you tip your toes to bring your pouting face closer to his. Toji eventually sighs and shakes his head in defeat.

“Okay, but we’re calling him Mochi.”

“Thank you, Toji!” you squeal as you throw your arms around his neck, scaring Henry the lovebird away.

Your boyfriend sighs heavily with a palm rubbing your back. He turns to kiss your hair before muttering in a warning, “You bring home one more and I’m moving out.”

“I’ll move with you,” you giggle, pulling back to beam at him.

He gives you a look. “No, you’re not.” He slides his hand down to give you a good smack on the ass before he takes a step back. He points a finger at you like a lecturing father. “No more, you hear me?”

You nod your head with a grin. He stares at your happy grin for a second before he clicks his tongue and shakes his head. While he turns to make his way to your shared room to take his shower, he turns around when he hears you murmuring.

You’re squatting on the floor, cupping the dog’s cheeks as you whisper, “I’m still gonna call you Mochicakes when he’s not around because you’re a cute little Mochicake, aren’t ya?”

Toji cannot help his lips from spreading into a smile, watching you coo at the dog. He knows he’d always give in to the next animal your big heart brings in, even if he has already expressed his disapproval for it.
