Calling all Fence (comic) fans!

By now, Seiji Katayama has 3 submissions which should automatically qualify him for the sword gays showdown. I say should because C.S. Pacat, the author, has a history of writing racist and fetishy MLM stories and called himself a racial slur in an interview despite being white*. As per the rules of this blog, media from problematic creators is banned.

Since people can change, I'm willing to assume Fence is better in its treatment of POC and MLM characters, but as a person unfamiliar with the comic and very disappointed with the author, I need some opinions from people who've actually read Fence before I allow anything by C.S. Pacat in my tournament.

*I was informed he's not white, sorry for that! I also used the wrong pronouns, which I also apologise for- his Wikipedia page uses she/her so I was convinced those were correct.

Build-a-Villain Au

Kai Chisaki would very much like know when his life turned into... this. Who figured, the moment your quirk turns up everyone wants get in your business about morality and ethics of shit.

"As if you know about that"

"I don't want to hear that coming from your gremlin amoral mouth"

"What's amoral?"

Kai turned his head to face the pale kid, red eyes shining at him that made Kai want to sneer, he just gave a deadpan look instead.

"Not something you want to be, Eri-sama."

"Are you really sticking to that?"

Now, he did sit up instead of being sprawled in their moderate apartment to look at the purple head messing with the new clothes they got for the girl.

"Yes, you bastard, she is still Chief-sama grandkid."

"Eri-chan, do you like being called that?"

It was a state that no one in the apartment even reacted to Pitch coming back of one of their shadows, Eri turned to look at him, the two staring into respective green black and red white eyes until Eri hummed out loud, which of course makes Seiji snort like the gremlin he is.

Kai is spared from having to throw a pillow at him by Sand, who throws two that hit him square in the face and chest.

"I like it!"

"I'm glad, because having this guy drop honorofics is harder than ripping out a splinter."

"Oh shut up, you overgrown cloud."

Oboro just smiles down at him as Kai groans, and on top of that, the two faced weasel dropped his gear onto his head.

"All cleaned up! and i assume you are finishing your new prototype, Iz?"

"Yup, it'll be fun to test out, I predict it'll break at least a bone before i can reasonably readjust!"

"Fun, the last time you broke a bone was of that serial r- huuuuh, cuddler, serial cuddler, it was funny as hell"

Kai calls out "Nice save"

"Shut Up-"

"What'll be dinner, Mister Mist?"

Every single one in the apartment apart from the two grinned at the nickname

"I got a apple curry recipe I want to try."

Kai covered his ears to the squeal of the child

Great villain he is, surrounded by children

Kai grinned, the satisfied petty creature in his chest settling down to rest.

So, the basis of this is of a prompt from writing prompts. All Might brought the lowest ratings for crime in the country, and yet, major villain attacks and plans still happen regularly.

There is a touch more of fabrication in here than just systematic weighting people down until they can’t do nothing besides struggle to survive.

No, here, Villains are regularly built and designed to work the way they do.

Well, most of them.

Kai Chisaki was nothing when they took him in, and was still nothing when he got out of the program, “ready” to start his career at the rip age of 8 years old, at least that was he was told, but being sent the yakuza way is hardly just coincidence.

Only thing they did neglect in his program? That Yakuza and their affiliates have a strong sense of duty and loyalty, so of course that’s what Chief drills in Kai head besides how to control his temper and quirk, and to navigate socialization while having a very stunted emotional state and intelligence (he was taught to never feel never have mercy or pity and how to make it painful-)

Things go downhill when in his “apprentice” for the younger kids of his suffer an attack, and only a hero student could protect them.

No one could protect the student.

Oboro Shirakumo dies by falling debris that rainy day.

But Kai learns that he can apparently do anything he wants with a body, and freaks out with the student when Oboro wakes up again, this time in a morgue after Kai sneaked in to see who had saved him exactly

the 12 year old drags the 15 old back to Chief, and this is the closest anyone ever saw the boy cry.

Oboro Shirakumo is dead, and yet he grows older besides the organization with the most winding underground structure he ever saw, and he did go to ua! And the whole being alive of course kickstarts a quirk awakening, making the boy be forced to drench himself in mist and clouds.

Things really kick out to out of control when at his 23 and living alone with mister Dead, Kai stumbles upon another set loose child villain designed one, only 13, and yet furious and seeking fights and no knowing what he could and couldn’t do outside of controlled environment.

So, maybe that take down and dragging back to the complex is his first act as a vigilante, but it isn’t like Kai will follow that streak, right?(He will, Kai is known as overhaul still, but not with scientist and researcher implications, he is an alchemist and doctor foremost, and a bash your head for thinking you can get away with beatings without raising a stint.)

And that’s the start of Kai “habit” of collecting villain designed children :3 Seiji Shishikura will be very salty about being his first “victim”, but the Hydra can’t keep a fake grudge to save his life, only be a short fuse and having no empathy for anything ever.

As the camera flickers to life, a group of people stand before you with smiles on most of their faces.

"Hey, everyone! Sorry that took so long! Ahem..."

The girl clears her throat.

"Everyone, start!"

"Hello!" A girl with mangled features and a bleeding eye says softly. She's dressed as a nurse, implying either a medical profession or a love of the yamikawaii aesthetic. "I'm Usagi Ouma, oldest sister of the Ouma siblings... W-Welcome! Please don't let my face scare you too much...!"

"Kanon-" the twin on the left says, "and Anon Ouma," the sister on the left finishes before they say in unison, "we're really excited to meet you all!"

"Seiji Ouma is my name! Please don't be mean, and we can be friends! I'm the only boy, so don't pick on me too much..." the boy pleads softly.

"I'm Aki Ouma... and it's they/them, so don't mess up on purpose," they say curtly. Seems people must mess up on purpose to make fun of them often.

"And at last, I'm Machiko Ouma, Ultimate Model. So don't do anything weird, because I'll pepper spray you without a second thought," she warns, smiling at you before doing a curtsy. "It's a pleasure to meet you. So... may we have a promo?"

Houses with a Story

Book review:

Step inside a series of captivating, imaginary homes and meet the cast of characters that live in them. This illustrated art book showcases 33 mini worlds that hail from a variety of time periods and genres.

Domesticated dragons feature in a couple of fantasy examples, Victorian trappings in others. There is a mobile home-on-rails consisting of a diesel punk train engine and living quarters carriage. Old Japan has several representations including an elderly clockmaker's house. Real world settings are also present such as a small boathouse on a river somewhere and sometime in North America or Europe. The inhabitants of the houses are full of personality and characterisation. A creekside hut is owned by a small Japanese oni. A live-in post office's worker delivers mail by dragonback.

Each home is brought to life in beautiful, full page, edge to edge main art. Supplementary spots are always provided. These come in the form of pseudo 3D cutaways and top-down floorplans. Thoughtful crafting is plainly evident in all the detail and there is great diversity to the settings and characters. Narrative is light and consists of a flavour paragraph and labelling captions.

Variety is immense but there are some patterns. Most homes are small, personal affairs although there is the occasional grand, multi floor, many roomed mansion. Stone towers and medieval cottage variants are the most frequently seen and there is a lean towards the rustic and the European. Timing is pre digital and SF is absent. Mod cons are sparing and the odd appliance or early generation fridge barely hint at electricity. Just one home has any semblance of power points. Not to be excluded, creator Seiji Yoshida also divulges his own personal world - that of a semi underground basement annex of his house where he does his art.

There is also a prevailing tinge of loneliness and solitude. Just one family is among the characters and the only other multi occupant dwelling being more of a novelty. All of the rest of the homes are the domains of singletons. Perhaps due to being envisaged as protagonists ready to star in their own stories - and to meet their friends or romantic partner enroute - it is a rare adventure that stars a settled family.

Actually I went to check and Kodaka wasn't even on the writing team for DR3, it was directed by Seiji Kishi and Daiki Fukuoka and written by Norimitsu Kaiho. Kodaka was busy writing for V3 at the time so he didn't write for DR3 at all so this might explain the retcons and why the characters weren't written that well.

That would explain it. Darn secondary writer teams, ruining established lore and shit!

Mint(o) is not your average junior high school student. She is well versed in Japanese dance, ballet, and is familiar with high society. Her father is a wealthy business owner who hopes that both of his children, Mint, and her older brother, Seiji, will follow in his footsteps. She has a rough personality and often clashes with Ichigo, but in reality, is close friends with her. Most of her time is spent practicing her ballet and becoming a proper lady.

She makes the acquaintance of the other four mew mews at the Red Data animal exhibit where Ichigo has her first date with Aoyoma. Offering her her handkerchief, Mint smirks at Ichigo before leaving. It is only during the earthquake that all five meet in the courtyard of the museum and are injected with the DNA of five endangered animals.

Her powers as a mew mew awaken when Ichigo saves her from her dog, Mickey, being infused with a parasite alien at her ballet recital. In the manga and original anime, she is the second mew mew to awaken, but in the new anime, she is the first to awaken and helps Ryou and Akasaka to gather the other four girls at the museum to help awaken their powers.

From this point, Mint joins Ichigo in finding the other girls and begins to look up to Zacro Fujiwara - their fifth and final member. After initially being rejected, Mint falls into a state of depression and with the other girls's help (Ichigo, Purin, and Lettuce/Retasu), Mint strengthens her resolve.

Mint is also the first of the mew mews to find both the mew aqua and to utilize it to stop the aliens from destroying the earth.

After Aoyoma sacrifices himself to use the mew aqua in Deep Blue's body and the fighting between aliens and humans cease, Mint returns to normal. Her powers begin to return when Berry becomes a Mew Mew and a new enemy, The Saint Rose Crusaders, arrive on the scene. After the fighting ceases with them as well, she returns to being a normal girl.

at the time of writing this, i am still watching the new anime. (i'm part way through season 2.) i have not read re-turn (i'd like to if it ever gets translated!!) and i have not read au lait. i have zero intention on reading the latter.

my interpretation of mint(o) is influenced by both the original anime and manga. i'm not a fan of her new aspirations in the new anime regarding her father's company. these will only be touched upon in my verse for the new anime.
