What's your opinion on a character's disability staying even when they're shapeshifting? I accidentally gave one of my physically disabled characters shapeshifting powers (he was a shapeshifter before I made him disabled,) and I know getting rid of disability through shapeshifting is bad, so I was thinking I'd have him retain his disability in different forms. Like, if he's turned into a cat, he still has his blindness, old broken bones, and chronic pain, he's just now a cat with those things. Would it be erasure to include things like turning into a worm, which has no painful bones or spinal cord, to make his chronic pain bearable while he waits for pain medication to kick in? Being a worm is obviously not a viable long-term solution, he does not like being it, and it's only a temporary measure to sort of fix one very specific problem (very bad pain day but ibuprofen taking what feels like years to kick in,) but should I scrap that?

Turning into a worm as a temporary chronic pain relief is my new favorite thing and is very relatable. The character still retaining his disabilities when shapeshifting; even more perfect. I dunno..? Honestly, it’s kinda always been that way. I’m not super big on touching. There are some people—mostly Shadow and Tails—who can hug me any time and it’s all cool cool cool. But everyone else has to check in first. It used to make me really uncomfortable back when Amy was grabbing me all the time without warning. Guess it feels like I’m… caught in a trap?

And I guess part of it’s just feeling like… everyone thinks they’re allowed to do whatever they want ‘cause I’m the hero. Like thanking me with hugs and kisses or demanding to get a photo with me. Like they’re entitled to it.

You should take a leaf out of my book and set boundaries.

I have become unphased by Analog horror scarys.

Is it okay to use the word “hobble” if the character in question is said to be very new to using a cane, so they’re not really used to it yet?

Hi lovely asker!

I think the word "hobble" is fine to use in this situation and also just is an okay word in general to use if that is the specific way that the characters stride is. A "Hobble" is more walking in a side to side way kinda like the way a penguin walks but usually it's described in a way where the person is usually putting more weight or one side of their body than the other which makes that "Hobble" sorta stride.

Here's a few more words or phrases I could think of to best describe that "Hobble" sorta stride -

Rocked

Staggered

Teeter-tottered

Unevenly

Sway

You can also describe the way that the character is walking and say -

They moved their cane forward, leaning into their side as it bore most of their weight before they eased off.

Or some good old metaphorical language like "They walked—

"As if on a see-saw"

"On a boat"

"Like the ground were uneven"

And here's some of my own that I've said about myself when in these instances -

"One with the penguins"

"Dancing the cumbia"

If you're doing how your character is feeling about the way they're walking, saying "awkward" is fine because it often is a awkward feeling getting used to a new mobility aid. They also might feel "Off", "more/less steady", or that it's "difficult/different". Or it might be the "Where have you been all my life" realization for them but they still need some time to get used to things.

Their stride is going to appear different as the story progresses too (if this is the case for your character). So they're going to get more comfortable in the use of their mobility aid and that will reflect in the way they move, walk, handle it, and over all confidence of mobility and the way they feel about it too!

Lastly, I think certain negative connotative words are best to avoid here all around like "lame/lamely", "crip/crippled", "hindered" etc. But also funnily enough those words don't give a lot of imagery or description into how the character is walking, do they? Guess it's best they're avoided all around! 😁 Hope this helps!

I think the technocyte virus infested stuff turned Aoi's hair white and her eyes that light blue color. I also think that's why Arthur's eye if not due to injury has turned a light blue as well. Eleanor's eyes were certainly not always purple either I imagine. Also the Nightingale siblings hair turning white even though they're young would support the Aoi hair theory unless it's hair dye for her or literally all 3 of them.

Those born between 2015 and 2024 with congenital problems due to infection with mosquito-born virus to receive R$60,000

Children born between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2024, with disabilities resulting from congenital syndrome caused by maternal Zika virus infection during pregnancy, are now eligible for a one-time financial support of R$60,000, as stipulated by a joint ordinance from the Ministries of Social Security, Health, and the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).

The ordinance, published on Tuesday (20) in the Federal Gazette (DOU), outlines that applications must be submitted to the INSS by October 31 to allow sufficient time for processing by December 31. Applications can be made through INSS service channels, preferably via the Meu INSS app.

If the application is not submitted by the child’s biological parents, documentation proving legal guardianship must be attached.
