Watcher thoughts

tldr: loved it overall. have some minor gripes though! I'm giving it a 8.5/10 for now

full spoilers ahead obviously... also its very long

the start was really strong. i loved finding out i was in industrial and loved seeing all the weird rot growths in seemingly random places. finding the third echo and getting warped for the first time was amazing

warping to all these different regions was fun, especially seeing a bunch of new regions in a row. it felt like i was playing rain world for the first time again

my favorite part by far is all of the new creatures. they're all unique in their own ways and none feel like a rehash of old ones (i don't necessarily have a problem with variants but it does get a bit old eventually lol)

favorite new creatures would have to be the sky whale (so cute) and the big guys grazing around in desolate tracts (not sure of their name. tardigrades? anyway they're scary i like them)

the new regions are all so rich and beautiful... favorites are outer rim, fetid glen, ancient urban and signal spires

the only region that kills me a bit is aether ridge with its numerous subregions... im back in the fucking building again!!!

the modded regions were all really good... i couldn't even tell which ones were modded and which ones weren't at first (i did after seeing the credits lol). anyone that's complaining about modded regions is annoying as fuck idc 👎👎

the story. well its rain world its too soon for me to have pieced it together yet 😭 i do like the unconventional approach to storytelling though! i did like downpour's more straightforward storytelling but it is nice to go back to the more esoteric stuff

oaoa guy's story was bittersweet. seeing their home and their old toys had me emotional. also i hope they're given a proper name because calling them "oaoa guy" is so dumb sorry oaoa guy

the prince was a really cool and unexpected character. seeing outer rim change more and more with each teleport was bizarre, then finally meeting that THING atop the throne was bone chilling. terrifying experience 10/10

my favorite moment in the whole dlc was seeing the ancients's shadows as they walked by the window in ancient urban. honestly might be one of my favorite moments in any videogame ever. it felt so special :)

now onto my criticisms.......

the map is too confusing. the end

okay in all seriousness though, it really is confusing...

-you have to sleep in order to see the full thing

-you can't see where warps are

-you can't see where they lead, even after using them!

-in order to find oaoa guy and do one of the endings, you have to find them in a very specific region. there's no indication of this at all... i wouldn't have finished the dlc without someone saying "go to shattered terrace" basically 😭

these issues aren't THAT big of a deal normally (except for the last one) but in order to do ending B, you have to constantly backtrack and create portals between infected and non-infected regions. which is a pain in the ass!! i kept going between regions i didn't have to go to anymore due to the lack of information on where the warps lead... these issues are what took away a big chunk of enjoyment for me. it's just unnecessary to have it be like this. otherwise, i did love watcher and the experience it provided. it would be a 10/10 otherwise honestly! i went in with no expectations and was very, very pleasantly surprised :)

okay i'm writing this part after finishing ending B (prince ending) and Oh My God why does it take so longgggg that was borderline infuriating... clocked in at 32-ish hours this is crazy. i even downloaded a mod to show warp locations because writing them down wasn't helping anymore due to the sheer amount. that was awful 😭😭 still like prince and i think they're an interesting character but holy shit all that for a cryptic cutscene...okay man. please videocult add warp portals to the map thank you 💜

In this AU, Odysseus chose to spare baby Astyanax! Because of this, certain events are altered in order to ensure Astyanax's survival (for example, Odysseus and Astyanax are directly transported to Calypso's island instead of washing up). Astyanax is currently 10 years old!

oh i feel like you'd LOVE it, the plot and themes are very no man's sky imo...like it's not the exact same but i get a lot of the same energy.

ANYWAY. i think the fact that i immediately went heart-eyed for riebeck, gabbro, and feldspar says. something. idk what. but they are so cuteys.

like i love that riebeck is just this cute awkward nerd who's so scared of space that they won't even say "black hole" (which. they are sitting above one in the area where you meet them. far enough above it that they're safe, but still) above a whisper but they still fuckin WENT THERE!! and to one of the more dangerous planets in the solar system too!! i wish there was a dialogue option to respond to them saying "i'm scared of space" with something like "and yet you're here. good on you". also they are so adorable when they're geeking out about the nomai, like literally every time i find something interesting on brittle hollow as soon as im done exploring it i haul ass back to their camp to see if they have any dialogue about it. or as is far more likely given the time limit and my [approximately 45 seconds of various death sounds] Playstyle, i head there at the beginning of the next loop.

and then there's gabbro, who is like...they're Funny Chill Loop-Aware Timebuddy, yeah, but also they do just seem to have a very sweet and sincere outlook on life. like i don't get the sense that their nature is hiding any nihilism, they're just. Genuinely Coping Well With This Whole Thing. there's a line of dialogue of theirs that really GOT me--in the echoes of the eye dlc where they refer to the deep space satellite orbiting the system as "ol' spacey" and say that, since the best way to find it is by using the system maps it generates, it's "like it's inviting us to visit", which. idk i found that to be a very cute way of looking at it. actually writing it out like that makes me realize they also refer to the nomai statue that inducted them into loop-awareness as their "memory-friend" and mention that they don't know where their ship is but they hope it isn't lonely. they're very friendly even when talking about inanimate objects which 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

and i haven't really like...seen much of feldspar, even after i modded out the fish dark bramble makes me really nervous so i dont go there a lot, but their attitude really drew me in. like the way they compliment the player for finding them in that very like. Trying To Act Aloof But Genuinely Super Impressed way is very charming. also they make a distinction in their logs between boring and interesting ways they've crashed their ship which is hilarious. can't get to be timber hearth's best pilot without a little trial and error i guess.
