Modal Split - Feral Feeling
After the tremendous composition “Feral Feeling,” which we covered on our pages upon release date, a Frankfurt-based pop artist, Modal Split, arrives with another beautiful piece that will suit anyone into wisely constructed music. “Love Yourself” is a self-explanatory composition that carries a significant message, reminding us to respect and care for ourselves. And this sincere, meaningful,…

I used "Nespole" by Floating Points from his 2015 debut album, Elaenia, to calibrate my episode 3 Transmissions with listeners' aural systems. The album was released on the Luaka Bop label in the United States and Floating Points' own, Pluto, in the UK. Though he had been releasing singles for years that were tenchno/house dance floor driven tunes for years, Elaenia was ambitious and pushing the boundaries of what electronic music could be. The album gave us a hint at what he would end up doing with Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra on the 2021 album, Promises.

Random Astrology Observations
If you have Mercury/2H/3H in Cancer, people find it soothing/comforting to listen to you talk or talk to you
If you have an afflicted Venus, you probably find it difficult to stay in relationships/have sustained romantic interests
People with Sun square Moon almost always come from homes where their parents hated each other.
People often befriend others whose luminaries belong to the same modalities as theirs (ex: Aries, cancer, libra, capricorn are all cardinal signs,,, Gemini/Virgo/sag/Pisces are all mutable signs,, Leo/aqua/Taurus/Scorpio are all fixed signs)
Mercury conjunct Mars natives tend to be very argumentative/combative speakers. They are contrarians and often disliked for their lack of charisma
Most people who have been married more than once have an afflicted Moon/Venus
Geminis often have gut health/digestive issues
Scorpios struggle with sleep disorders
Water signs in general (esp Scorpios) love to stay hidden/tend to be very very lowkey, esp on social media
The most bookish people I know have earth sign placements
Moon in 4h people have difficult relationships with their mothers
Men with Venus in Sag are absolute freak$$
Venus conjunct luminaries makes natives struggle with perfectionism
Earth signs have a natural sense of fairness & justice
Water signs are definitely into trance, electronic, free form, house & psychedelic music

RFK Jr. Tells CDC To Go All In On Bogus Vitamin ‘Cures’ For Measles
The health secretary has been promoting vitamin A and other unproven treatments for a disease that is highly preventable with a vaccine.
. . .
“Secretary Kennedy will be enlisting the entire agency to activate a scientific process to treat a host of diseases, including measles, with single or multiple existing drugs in combination with vitamins and other modalities,” HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon said in a statement.
. . .
Research on vitamin A’s impact on measles in people without deficiencies remains inconclusive, but with Kennedy’s prompting, some parents in West Texas ― the center of the 900-person measles outbreak ― have given it to their children in high doses. Doctors in the area say many of those children have been showing signs of liver damage, a side effect of excessive vitamin A intake.
And on Monday, Kennedy said HHS was deploying doctors to Texas to treat measles with “aerosolized steroids with budesonide with clarithromycin and others.” Neither budesonide nor clarithromycin is proven to treat measles, and suggesting their use is dangerous, the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a blunt statement last month.

J.WLSN — The Rush (Room 40)
In the wonderful and frightening world of electronic music, whatever flavor the month might bring, there are clean sounds and dirty sounds. This distinction has little to do with home or professional production, especially now that high-end equipment innovations have graced lower-cost equivalents. The clean/dirty dichotomy is an aesthetic choice, something like a world view with just as many gradations. J.WLSN’s sounds are dirty, by which I mean grungy, a cultivated and grainy imprecision of pitch amidst sounds coming remarkably close to the whims and whiles of life as we know it. The opening moment of the ironically named “Lulled,” first track on J.WLSN’s new album The Rush, hits home like a hammer and then oozed outward to each side with the felicitous fuzz, thump and goo of reverb-soaked technology in familial decay.
So it goes. Even when a more crystalline timbre would seem to be on tap — the first sound in “Rushed” takes a page from Robert Fripp’s Soundscapes book — it soon distorts, begins to wobble and finally exhibits a mutating subtext of pitch complexes, growls, sibilance and snap that overtake any semblance of modality. When the piano on “Dropped” threatens to inhabit center-stage, to clarify its textures too completely, it’s already masked high frequencies succumb to the grime of something sounding like overlayed ululation or demon-speak. Listen at 10:42 for the latter in stark relief. The piano can hit so hard that tone threatens to split, and in fact, by pieces end, those chafed pitches are all that’s left.
My descriptions make it all sound ugly, and nothing could be further from the truth. Like Vanessa Rossetto’s painstakingly constructed homey landscapes in apotheosis mode, the sonic unpredictabilities subvert and reenforce the terms on which each piece exists. The technology itself is not simply a part of the process but just as often guides it along an increasingly labyrinthine path. Sounds stretch beyond themselves while also somehow, and miraculously, remaining contained, not simply in a repetitive way but as objects encased in their own self-perpetuating skins. Each piece sounds like a haiku stretched beyond breaking point, a small-scale meditation with mountains in view. The fact that this sound-poetry can be stark and lush simultaneously, as the compositional processes break their boundaries to become the compositions, gives the music its power and delicacy, setting it apart in a more than crowded field.

Electronic Arts Q1 2024 Earnings Conference Call (August 1st)
This happened today and Dragon Age was mentioned in the opening Prepared Remarks section of the call (emphasis mine):
"To do more extraordinary things for our people, players and communities, our teams are building the strongest pipeline in the history of EA to drive multi-year growth. Over the next few years, we will launch numerous experiences that grow and deepen the fandom of our legendary IP. Our multi-year targeted investments toward our biggest opportunities include global titles like blockbuster storytelling from Dragon Age, incredible skateboarding gameplay and social connection from skate, and a revival of EA SPORTS College Football that celebrates the action, culture and tradition of the sport like never before. We’re also hard at work on a new experience from The Sims that will transform what players can do with creativity, a sprawling action adventure Iron Man game, a reimagination of Battlefield as a truly connected ecosystem, and the expansion of the Apex Legends universe across platforms, geographies, and modalities of play. The most recent reveal of our Black Panther project — set in a massive, explorable universe — marks the latest chapter in EA’s collaboration with The Walt Disney Company and the Marvel Games team."
[source and full Prepared Remarks transcript]
Dragon Age was then mentioned during the Q&A section of the call (emphasis mine):
Q: "Last quarter it was noted that players were concentrating their spend on major franchises. Just wanted to see first if there was any update to that? And then, Andrew, in your commentary you highlighted a goal for Apex as an experience across platforms, I'm assuming that includes mobile as well, so can you speak to how you envision potentially relaunching that title on phones and how the approach could differ to the prior game? Thank you." A: "Yeah, so let me touch on the first part. I do think we continue to see big titles getting bigger, and live services getting bigger, and certainly as a company with a broad portfolio of large-scale IP and large-scale live services, we believe that we will be long-term beneficiaries of that trend. You know, that doesn't mean that we won't build smaller titles over the course of time. There are these incredible stories that we believe should be told in the context of entertainment. We are focusing our investment so that we can build a cost-base around those that's appropriate, but we're also really getting behind our biggest opportunities, and as we've talked about, our strategy and building these experiences that entertain massive online communities. Our expectation is that will be a large scale growth driver for us. But, you know, when thought about the right way, games like, you know, Dragon Age, and Jedi, can tell truly blockbuster stories and really break into that top category of games. I think what we see today is the mid-tier and lower games that, you know, maybe did pretty well through Covid because people had a lot of spare time - they're the part of the industry that really aren't doing and performing as well. And as we think about our future, you should expect that we'll continue to focus our investments and our energy and our resources against these big opportunities because we do believe that is where the industry is trending."

There were no further mentions of Dragon Age, Mass Effect or BioWare during the call.

A new study published by The Lancetmedical journal on 9 January reveals that the death toll from Israel’s genocide in Gaza was most likely undercounted by 41 percent in the first nine months of the war.
The study was carried out by scholars at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Yale University, and other institutions.
It focused on the period between October 2023 and June 2024. The study places the toll up until that point at 64,260, around 8,000 more than the current death toll.
“We estimated 64,260 deaths due to traumatic injury during the study period, suggesting the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) under-reported mortality by 41 percent. The annualized crude death rate was 39.3 per 1000 people, representing a rate ratio of 14.0 compared with all-cause mortality in 2022, even when ignoring non-injury excess mortality,” the study says.
Around 59.1 percent of those killed were women, children, and elderly.
The Lancet highlighted that the Health Ministry had been accurately recording the deaths at the start of the conflict, but its capacity to maintain the reliability of its toll deteriorated due to the Israeli war – which has decimated hospitals and disrupted communications across the strip.
“The escalation of Israeli military ground operations and attacks on healthcare facilities severely disrupted the latter's ability to record deaths electronically. These challenges compelled the MoH to rely on less structured data collection modalities, particularly when hospitals were under siege or experiencing telecommunication blockades. This might have led to incomplete and geographically biased reporting, as seen in other conflict zones where prolonged warfare complicates casualty tracking.”

Luke Tangerine & Modal Split - Departure
A prolific Frankfurt-based musician, composer, and artist, Luke Tangerine, returns with more exceptional music. Unlike the remainder of his works,…

Brazil's PIX made up 39 percent of all electronic payments in 2023

The record number of nearly 42 billion transactions handled last year by PIX, Brazil’s instant payment system, was already known, but newly consolidated data from the Central Bank also shows that the system accounted for 39 percent of all electronic payments in 2023 — very close to the 41 percent made with cards. As we have reported, PIX is poised to challenge the card industry in the coming years as it gains new features.
According to the Central Bank, the usage of all electronic payment methods grew last year: 108.7 billion transactions, up 31 percent from the previous year. The financial volume handled by these operations increased by 9 percent to BRL 99.7 trillion — the data from the monetary authority excludes transactions carried out in cash.
Card transactions also increased in all modalities: credit (12 percent), debit (5 percent), and prepaid (36 percent).
