The Saregeant's Daughter - Chapter 9 Jay
"you like your job don't you?"
Chicago PD S7 EP15: Burden of Truth
"Yes, Will I will join you at Molly's with the rest," I said walking into the station.
He continued talking as I nodded at Platt she gave a fake smile before going back to order around some other officers.
"Yeah yeah I won't be late," I said before hanging up the phone.
"Morning," Kevin said from his desk.
"Where's Hank, Adam, and Kevin?" I asked as I sat down at my desk.
"Roman"
"Kim ex-partner?"
"Yeah, his sister is missing and they went to the scene of the fire," Antonio said walking out of the lounge.
"His sister is missing for how long?"
"We weren't told how long yet, you and Upton head down to med and talk with the victims that were found shot at the scene"
I stood up from my seat and followed Hailey to my car.
-
"We've been treating at least three ODs an hour, like stopping running water," the nurse said as we followed the nurse.
"This kid who set the fire?" Hailey asked.
"Yeah, Travis Butler. Paramedics brought him in 15 minutes ago, GSW to the stomach smoke inhalation. He's still in surgery, but—this place is too busy" she said.
"Then you see my daughter first"
"No, but my son's in worse condition than your daughter"
There were groups of parents surrounding Sylvie and Emily along with a nurse.
"Hey, what's going on?" I asked Sylvie.
"Victims from the fire were brought here, and so was Travis" Sylvia said.
Then two of the fathers started fighting by pushing each other.
"Police!"
"Hey, police!"
I got in between them to separate them from fighting in the middle of the hospital.
"Get off of me!"
"Hey! Police!" Hailey yelled as she grabbed one of the fathers and pushed him up against the wall.
"Police! You need to calm down!"
"Calm down. Calm down" I said turning to the father I had against the wall with my right arm against his chest while I pointed at him with my left finger.
"My sons are in worse condition"
"Calm down," Hailey said as she still had him against the wall.
"Okay"
-
I walked towards Hailey after talking with the other victims. I leaned into Hailey, "No witnesses saw Logan flee"
"Mr.Butler?"
"Yeah?"
"Surgery went well, Travis is stable," a doctor said walking towards us.
"Can I see him?"
"Mm-hmm" he before he walked back to the entrance he came out off.
We followed Mr.Butler to see his son so we could talk to him.
"No, I didn't see where Logan went," Travis said as he looked at us.
He hooked was up to loads of machines to keep track of his vitals and breathing.
"He, uh, he shot me, I saw him leave the room, but that's all"
"How well do you know Logan? You know where he might run to?" I asked him.
"I don't know him at all. A friend of mine told me where to find him. Told me he killed my girlfriend"
"He dealt to her?" Hailey said with her arms crossing against her chest.
"She was happy, she was perfect. Then he started selling to her. He's responsible for this. I was just trying to make it right. I'm going to jail aren't I" he said sighing.
-
"Ann Hoffman, 15. Clarke Preston, 17. Two more ODs were pronounced at Med in the last 24 hours. And their tic report matches our original DOA, Brandi. Mass amounts of fentanyl in their systems" Kevin said pointing his pen at the board.
"Same compound product our dealer Logan Peters is pushing. The kids got a few priors for possession, theft, and a statutory rape charge. He was 23, his girlfriend, 15. The charge was dismissed" Vanessa said pointing at his picture.
"All right, and the pills?" Hank asked.
"Thinking Mexican oxy, Looks feels, tastes like regular oxy, but it's fake. Made with fentanyl, instead" Hailey said.
"Comes directly from cartels, and is dealt to Hispanic gangs in the city," Antonio said looking at a file.
"I got something," Roman said which caused us all to look at him, "Latin players said Logan wasn't getting the product from them. Southside hustlers were granting him asylum"
"Well, begs the question where's he getting his product?" Kim said.
"Witness popped. The guy across the street from the fire says he saw Logan running toward the L. I pulled the footage, he got off at Wilson" Adam said.
"All right, so run all Logan Peters's known associations near that stop. I mean, the guys hiding somewhere, right? We find him, flip him for his supplier, get this product off the street before that board grows" Hank said walking to his Office with Trudy behind him.
-
"DNA found under Sarah's fingernails popped into the system. It was Logan's" Adam said throwing the file onto Hailey's desk.
"All right, somebody tells me we got something on this prick," Hank said.
"We ran the pill we found at the lake house through ISP. They did confirm that it matches our ODS, but it ain't Mexican oxy" Kevin said from his desk.
"That pull is way too sloppy for the cartels, ISP believes it's homemade," Antonio said.
"Might have something, we ran Logan's GPS stats. The tower pings up against known south-side hustler hot spots" Vanessa said walking towards Kim with the file.
"One hit an old stash house leases to a Leon Miller, guys a bit of a heavy known for leasing dope corners. It's a long shot, but that stretch of the city is dead man's land. There ain't nothing there"
"I mean, it's a damn good place to hide out," Adam said.
"Yeah, let's roll on it, Nice work Rojas" Hank said looking at the file that Kim had given him after looking at it.
-
"All right we will take front," Adam said but was cut off by gunshots coming from the warehouse.
We all got down and took shelter in our cars.
"5021 Frank, we got shots fired coming from inside a warehouse at 1600 West Racine. Get us some cars over here"
"Copy that"
"Ruz, you good?" I asked him as I saw him kneel to check the pulse of a body.
"Yeah, I'm good. We got Logan Peters. DOA looks like gunshot wounds to the chest" he said.
We then heard something moving which caused us all to look up to where the sound was coming from.
I followed Kim up with our guns out in front of us, I opened the door and Kim walked in first then I followed behind.
I checked behind her to cover her when we heard something crash.
"Hey. We got a possibility side of of the building" I said into my radio.
"Copy that"
I saw someone walking behind some storage stands, "Chicago PD! Don't move!" I yelled out.
He was then tackled by Kim.
"Don't move, where is the gun? You got the gun" I said as I kept my gun on the subject.
"No, I don't see him," Kim said as she flipped the suspect onto his back.
"Buddy, where's the gun?" She asked him again.
"He's foaming at the mouth"
"What is he, an OD?" I asked.
"I don't know you got Narcan?" She said shaking him.
"No"
"Oh god"' she said flipping him onto his side.
"5021 George, emergency. roll an ambo to 1600 West Racine, we got an OD victim. Nonresponsive. Advice responding to set up a four-block perimeter, we still might have a shooter here" I said into my radio.
"Copy that"
-
"GSR on the junkie is negative," Vanessa said putting the phone down.
"Dude ain't no killer, just a stone-cold addict," Kevin said running up the steps.
"All right, so what do we get on Leon Miller?"
"Confirmed he's the one that's paying rent on the warehouse. It's bad paper, but the money traces back to him. Narcotics says that he's well-established, smart, and strategic" Hailey said sitting on her desk as I looked at her from my desk.
"Hmm"
"He's a good fit for Logan's supplier," I said from my desk.
"All right, so dig into it. See if we can put him or one of his associates at the scene" Hank said.
"Sarge?" Kim said
"Yes?"
"Okay if I updated Roman?"
"Yeah"
-
"Yeah, I'm not sure—"
"Jay?"
"Yeah, whatsup," I said walking down the steps with Vanessa and file in hand.
"Any new leads?"
"No, we can prove that they knew each other from texts and social media, but there's no tower pings, there's no footage, nothing that puts Miller or anyone associated with him near Logan's murder," I said as we walked into the main room of the station.
"Guys," Hailey said walking towards us with Trudy.
"Who was that?" I asked as the man left the station.
"He's a potential witness. He says he was near the crime scene, saw a black Ranger Rover speed away a minute after hearing two gunshots" Hailey said.
"That's the lead we've been waiting for. Miller drives a black ranger rover" Vanessa said.
"Yeah. He also got a partial plate. Time to move"
-
We all pulled to the building and got out of our car with our guns out and wearing our bulletproof vest.
Kevin broke down the door and I rushed in first with Kim and Hailey behind me.
"Police! Gun!" I said as a suspect came out of a room with his gun, he shot at us but I returned fire killing him.
"I got you. Move up" I said to the girls.
"Shots fired at the police" I heard over the radio Kevin.
"Gun!" Hailey said before she returned fire to the suspect and killed him as well.
"Go, Burgess, go, Burgess, I got you," Kevin said.
"Sarge, I got a runner! He heading straight towards you" I said into my radio.
I heard a door be kicked down and the suspect fell to the ground with a loud thump and dropped his gun.
"Don't shoot" he said laying on the ground with his hands up while Hank had his gun pointed at him.
-
"We got Miller on tape eating at Frank's Grill over on Marquette from 12:31 to 2:18. Son of a bitch was telling the truth," Kim said.
"Well, maybe he didn't pull the trigger himself, doesn't mean he didn't order the hit," Hank said looking at Kim's computer screen.
"Hey. We finally caught a break with a bus cam" Adam said walking up the stairs with Antonio behind him.
"He was passing Racine, two blocks out, three minutes after the gunshots," Antonio said.
"Caught this blue Nissan sedan driving westbound. Unfortunately, because of the glare on the windows, you can't make out the driver"
"And the black Ranger rover?" Hank asked
"No? It's just the blue Nissan, no plates" Antonio said looking at Hank.
"Okay, so we start looking for owners of blue Nissans, Hey Kim"
"Yeah?"
"Talk to that witness again, maybe he saw a blue Nissan too," Hank said.
"Copy You"
-
"Where we at? We find any blue Nissan owners with a connection to Leon Miller or the DOA?" Hank asked as he walked out of his office.
"So we went through all of Millers' known associations. Nobody drives a blue Nissan" I said turning away from my screen to look at Hank.
"So, other than the car, the only piece of evidence we got is this witness, Christian Lewis. Who popped out of nowhere and luckily saw a black Range Rover speed from the scene"
"Maybe Miller let one of his associates drive the Ranger Rover to do the hit," Kim said playing with her pend as she looked at Hank.
"It's possible, but Miller seems smarter than that. So that leaves you—"
"the killer drives the same car as Miller with similar plates"
"Or the witness is lying his ass off," Kevin said.
I saw Kim shift on her chair as Kevin said that, she started to play with her fingers and sweating slightly the room wasn't even hot at all.
"Mm-hmm, all right, Kim, you talked to the witness yesterday. Her seem credible to you?"Hank said.
"Um, you know, I-I couldn't tell that he was lying," Kim said lying to Hank.
I let out a small chuckle that only Hailey managed to catch, she gave me that look with her eyes to cut it off.
"but his story did have some holes in it"
"Bring him in," Hank said.
-
We all sat at the church for Roman sister's funeral, everyone in Firehouse 51 where here to mourn the loss of a member's family even though we never met her.
The sound of the church door being opened caused me to turn around, Hank was walking in with familiar women next to his side. Once they got closer to us I was able to make the face it was Madeline.
She was dressed in all black and a long gray sweater she greeted the girls from 51 and took a seat next to them.
I didn't realize how long I was looking at her till Hailey nudged my shoulder.
"Staring is rude" she whispered as she looked at me.
I shook my head, "remember the girl I told you about?"
"Yeah"
"She walked in with Hank next to her," I said turning to face the front.
Antonio nudged my shoulder, "You like your job don't you?" He said.
"Yeah, I do why?" I asked confused.
"Then stay away from his niece," he said smirking at me.
I let out a cough Hailey started patting my back while Antonio let out a small chuckle but covered it up with a cough.
Everyone stood up to talk with each other or talk with the Roman family.
I looked at Madeline was talking comfortably with everyone from 51 and she looked close to Severide.
He greeted her with a kiss on her cheek and a giant hug.
"I never seen her, you know who that is?" Adam asked me as he stood next to me looking at me.
"Voight's niece," I said turning to face him.
"Voight has a silbing?!" He said shocked and confused.
"Antonio just told me I was star stark when I saw her walk in, I know her through my brother," I said turning away and making my way towards Hailey.
I then saw Madelinerun out of the church with her phone by her ear talking almost yelling.
"Duty calls," Antonio said looking at her.
-
I exited the elevator and walked towards my apartment lost in my thoughts that I didn't notice the man in front of me.
"Sorry man," I said
"It's cool," he said blowing before walking towards the elevator.
I couldn't stop thinking about how Madeline was Voight's niece, I couldn't see that many of the same features she didn't even look like him, maybe she knew Erin and grew up with her. I haven't said her name since she left three years ago would it be weird if we ended up dating does she even know about me or even us? Did Erin ever mention this to her?
I poured myself some whiskey into a cup before chugging the whole cup as that thought kept playing in my head with so many different answers.

WELCOME TO PLATONIC PALS PUNCHOUT!
If Saturday cartoons taught us anything it’s that The Power Of Friendship is the ultimate weapon that can defeat any obstacle! But can it defeat…other friendships!?
This tournament pits Dynamic Duo vs Dynamic Duo to see who has the Ultimate Friendship. They will do this by punching other pairs in the face winning polls!
We are currently running Round 1, Part 1. If you don't see your guys, don't worry, Part 2 & 3 are coming later! Thank you everyone for voting! Part 1 round 1 is over, and Part 2 round 1 is next.
Tied polls will perform the "befriend your enemy" trope and team up! They need to be within 1% of each other to qualify as a tie.

👉Absolutely DO NOT comment things like “These characters are totally dating!” This is an aro-safe space & insisting that 2 characters someone sees as platonic are ~actually dating~ is cruel. If you genuinely believe someone cheated & submitted an unqualified duo, DM or send me an ask. (Also: characters who date after a long friendships are allowed if emphasis is on the friendship)
(Note: I will NOT be going out of my way to organize every single piece of propaganda, bc that is WAY too much work. However, I will reblog all propaganda that comes to my attention, & I will answer all propaganda asks.)
Shameless self-plug: if you like my me, please check out my [YouTube channel] where I do art & science education, or my [Warriors/art tumblr]. You can also donate to [my ko-fi] to help me afford my meds & food. Thank you!!

Barbara Stanwyck (born Ruby Catherine Stevens; July 16, 1907 – January 20, 1990) was an American actress, model and dancer. A stage, film and television star, she was known during her 60-year career as a consummate and versatile professional for her strong, realistic screen presence. A favorite of directors including Cecil B. DeMille, Fritz Lang and Frank Capra, she made 85 films in 38 years before turning to television.
Stanwyck got her start on the stage in the chorus as a Ziegfeld girl in 1923 at age 16 and within a few years was acting in plays. She was then cast in her first lead role in Burlesque (1927), becoming a Broadway star. Soon after that, Stanwyck obtained film roles and got her major break when Frank Capra chose her for his romantic drama Ladies of Leisure (1930), which led to additional lead roles.
In 1937 she had the title role in Stella Dallas and received her first Academy Award nomination for best actress. In 1941 she starred in two successful screwball comedies: Ball of Fire with Gary Cooper, and The Lady Eve with Henry Fonda. She received her second Academy Award nomination for Ball of Fire, and in recent decades The Lady Eve has come to be regarded as a romantic comedy classic with Stanwyck's performance called one of the best in American comedy.
By 1944, Stanwyck had become the highest-paid woman in the United States. She starred alongside Fred MacMurray in the seminal film noir Double Indemnity (1944), playing the smoldering wife who persuades MacMurray's insurance salesman to kill her husband. Described as one of the ultimate portrayals of villainy, it is widely thought that Stanwyck should have won the Academy Award for Best Actress rather than being just nominated. She received another Oscar nomination for her lead performance as an invalid wife overhearing her own murder plot in the thriller film noir, Sorry, Wrong Number (1948). After she moved into television in the 1960s, she won three Emmy Awards – for The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1961), the western series The Big Valley (1966), and miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983).
She received an Honorary Oscar in 1982, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1986 and was the recipient of several other honorary lifetime awards. She was ranked as the 11th greatest female star of classic American cinema by the American Film Institute. An orphan at the age of four, and partially raised in foster homes, she always worked; one of her directors, Jacques Tourneur, said of Stanwyck, "She only lives for two things, and both of them are work."
Barbara Stanwyck was born Ruby Catherine Stevens on July 16, 1907, in Brooklyn, New York. She was the fifth – and youngest – child of Catherine Ann (née McPhee) (1870-1911) and Byron E. Stevens (1872-1919), working-class parents. Her father, of English descent, was a native of Lanesville, Massachusetts, and her mother, of Scottish descent, was an immigrant from Sydney, Nova Scotia. When Ruby was four, her mother died of complications from a miscarriage after she was knocked off a moving streetcar by a drunk. Two weeks after the funeral, her father joined a work crew digging the Panama Canal and was never seen again by his family. Ruby and her older brother, Malcolm Byron (later nicknamed "By") Stevens, were raised by their eldest sister Laura Mildred, (later Mildred Smith) (1886–1931), who died of a heart attack at age 45. When Mildred got a job as a showgirl, Ruby and Byron were placed in a series of foster homes (as many as four in a year), from which young Ruby often ran away.
"I knew that after fourteen I'd have to earn my own living, but I was willing to do that ... I've always been a little sorry for pampered people, and of course, they're 'very' sorry for me."
Ruby toured with Mildred during the summers of 1916 and 1917, and practiced her sister's routines backstage. Watching the movies of Pearl White, whom Ruby idolized, also influenced her drive to be a performer. At the age of 14, she dropped out of school, taking a package wrapping job at a Brooklyn department store. Ruby never attended high school, "although early biographical thumbnail sketches had her attending Brooklyn's famous Erasmus Hall High School."
Soon afterward, she took a filing job at the Brooklyn telephone office for $14 a week, which allowed her to become financially independent. She disliked the job; her real goal was to enter show business, even as her sister Mildred discouraged the idea. She then took a job cutting dress patterns for Vogue magazine, but customers complained about her work and she was fired. Ruby's next job was as a typist for the Jerome H. Remick Music Company; work she reportedly enjoyed, however her continuing ambition was in show business, and her sister finally gave up trying to dissuade her.
In 1923, a few months before her 16th birthday, Ruby auditioned for a place in the chorus at the Strand Roof, a nightclub over the Strand Theatre in Times Square. A few months later, she obtained a job as a dancer in the 1922 and 1923 seasons of the Ziegfeld Follies, dancing at the New Amsterdam Theater. "I just wanted to survive and eat and have a nice coat", Stanwyck said. For the next several years, she worked as a chorus girl, performing from midnight to seven a.m. at nightclubs owned by Texas Guinan. She also occasionally served as a dance instructor at a speakeasy for gays and lesbians owned by Guinan. One of her good friends during those years was pianist Oscar Levant, who described her as being "wary of sophisticates and phonies."
Billy LaHiff, who owned a popular pub frequented by showpeople, introduced Ruby in 1926 to impresario Willard Mack. Mack was casting his play The Noose, and LaHiff suggested that the part of the chorus girl be played by a real one. Mack agreed, and after a successful audition gave the part to Ruby. She co-starred with Rex Cherryman and Wilfred Lucas. As initially staged, the play was not a success. In an effort to improve it, Mack decided to expand Ruby's part to include more pathos. The Noose re-opened on October 20, 1926, and became one of the most successful plays of the season, running on Broadway for nine months and 197 performances. At the suggestion of David Belasco, Ruby changed her name to Barbara Stanwyck by combining the first name from the play Barbara Frietchie with the last name of the actress in the play, Jane Stanwyck; both were found on a 1906 theater program.
Stanwyck became a Broadway star soon afterward, when she was cast in her first leading role in Burlesque (1927). She received rave reviews, and it was a huge hit. Film actor Pat O'Brien would later say on a 1960s talk show, "The greatest Broadway show I ever saw was a play in the 1920s called 'Burlesque'." Arthur Hopkins described in his autobiography To a Lonely Boy, how he came to cast Stanwyck:
After some search for the girl, I interviewed a nightclub dancer who had just scored in a small emotional part in a play that did not run [The Noose]. She seemed to have the quality I wanted, a sort of rough poignancy. She at once displayed more sensitive, easily expressed emotion than I had encountered since Pauline Lord. She and Skelly were the perfect team, and they made the play a great success. I had great plans for her, but the Hollywood offers kept coming. There was no competing with them. She became a picture star. She is Barbara Stanwyck.
He also called Stanwyck "The greatest natural actress of our time", noting with sadness, "One of the theater's great potential actresses was embalmed in celluloid."
Around this time, Stanwyck was given a screen test by producer Bob Kane for his upcoming 1927 silent film Broadway Nights. She lost the lead role because she could not cry in the screen test, but was given a minor part as a fan dancer. This was Stanwyck's first film appearance.
While playing in Burlesque, Stanwyck was introduced to her future husband, actor Frank Fay, by Oscar Levant. Stanwyck and Fay were married on August 26, 1928, and soon moved to Hollywood.
Stanwyck's first sound film was The Locked Door (1929), followed by Mexicali Rose, released in the same year. Neither film was successful; nonetheless, Frank Capra chose Stanwyck for his film Ladies of Leisure (1930). Her work in that production established an enduring friendship with the director and led to future roles in his films. Other prominent roles followed, among them as a nurse who saves two little girls from being gradually starved to death by Clark Gable's vicious character in Night Nurse (1931). In Edna Ferber's novel brought to screen by William Wellman, she portrays small town teacher and valiant Midwest farm woman Selena in So Big! (1932). She followed with a performance as an ambitious woman "sleeping" her way to the top from "the wrong side of the tracks" in Baby Face (1933), a controversial pre-Code classic. In The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933), another controversial pre-Code film by director Capra, Stanwyck portrays an idealistic Christian caught behind the lines of Chinese civil war kidnapped by warlord Nils Asther. A flop at the time, containing "mysterious-East mumbo jumbo", the lavish film is "dark stuff, and its difficult to imagine another actress handling this ... philosophical conversion as fearlessly as Ms. Stanwyck does. She doesn't make heavy weather of it."
In Stella Dallas (1937) she plays the self-sacrificing title character who eventually allows her teenage daughter to live a better life somewhere else. She landed her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress when she was able to portray her character as vulgar, yet sympathetic as required by the movie. Next, she played Molly Monahan in Union Pacific (1939) with Joel McCrea. Stanwyck was reportedly one of the many actresses considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), although she did not receive a screen test. In Meet John Doe she plays an ambitious newspaperwoman with Gary Cooper (1941).
In Preston Sturges's romantic comedy The Lady Eve (1941), she plays a slinky, sophisticated con-woman who falls for her intended victim, the guileless, wealthy snake-collector and scientist Henry Fonda, she "gives off an erotic charge that would straighten a boa constrictor." Film critic David Thomson described Stanwyck as "giving one of the best American comedy performances", and its reviewed as brilliantly versatile in "her bravura double performance" by The Guardian. The Lady Eve is among the top 100 movies of all time on Time and Entertainment Weekly's lists, and is considered to be both a great comedy and a great romantic film with its placement at #55 on the AFI's 100 Years ...100 Laughs list and #26 on its 100 Years ...100 Passions list.
Next, she was the extremely successful, independent doctor Helen Hunt in You Belong to Me (1941), also with Fonda. Stanwyck then played nightclub performer Sugerpuss O'Shea in the Howard Hawks directed, but Billy Wilder written comedy Ball of Fire (1941). In this update of the Snow White and Seven Dwarfs tale, she gives professor Gary Cooper a better understanding of "modern English" in the performance for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
In Double Indemnity, the seminal film noir thriller directed by Billy Wilder, she plays the sizzling, scheming wife/blonde tramp/"destiny in high heels" who lures an infatuated insurance salesman (Fred MacMurray) into killing her husband. Stanwyck brings out the cruel nature of the "grim, unflinching murderess", marking her as the "most notorious femme" in the film noir genre. Her insolent, self-possessed wife is one of the screen's "definitive studies of villainy - and should (it is widely thought) have won the Oscar for Best Actress", not just been nominated. Double Indemnity is usually considered to be among the top 100 films of all time, though it did not win any of its seven Academy Award nominations. It is the #38 film of all time on the American Film Institute's list, as well as the #24 on its 100 Years ...100 Thrillers list and #84 on its 100 Years ...100 Passions list.
She plays the columnist caught up in white lies and a holiday romance in Christmas in Connecticut (1945). In 1946 she was "liquid nitrogen" as Martha, a manipulative murderess, costarring with Van Heflin and newcomer Kirk Douglas in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. Stanwyck was also the vulnerable, invalid wife that overhears her own murder being plotted in Sorry, Wrong Number (1948) and the doomed concert pianist in The Other Love (1947). In the latter film's soundtrack, the piano music is actually being performed by Ania Dorfmann, who drilled Stanwyck for three hours a day until the actress was able to synchronize the motion of her arms and hands to match the music's tempo, giving a convincing impression that it is Stanwyck playing the piano.
Pauline Kael, a longtime film critic for The New Yorker, admired the natural appearance of Stanwyck's acting style on screen, noting that she "seems to have an intuitive understanding of the fluid physical movements that work best on camera". In reference to the actress's film work during the early sound era, Kael observed that the "early talkies sentimentality...only emphasizes Stanwyck's remarkable modernism."
Many of her roles involve strong characters, yet Stanwyck was known for her accessibility and kindness to the backstage crew on any film set. She knew the names of their wives and children. Frank Capra said of Stanwyck: "She was destined to be beloved by all directors, actors, crews and extras. In a Hollywood popularity contest, she would win first prize, hands down." While working on 1954s Cattle Queen of Montana on location in Glacier National Park, she did some of her own stunts, including a swim in the icy lake.[49] A consummate professional, when aged 50, she performed a stunt in Forty Guns. Her character had to fall off her horse and, with her foot caught in the stirrup, be dragged by the galloping animal. This was so dangerous that the movie's professional stunt person refused to do it. Her professionalism on film sets led her to be named an Honorary Member of the Hollywood Stuntmen's Hall of Fame.
William Holden and Stanwyck were longtime friends and when Stanwyck and Holden were presenting the Best Sound Oscar for 1977, he paused to pay a special tribute to her for saving his career when Holden was cast in the lead for Golden Boy (1939). After a series of unsteady daily performances, he was about to be fired, but Stanwyck staunchly defended him, successfully standing up to the film producers. Shortly after Holden's death, Stanwyck recalled the moment when receiving her honorary Oscar: "A few years ago, I stood on this stage with William Holden as a presenter. I loved him very much, and I miss him. He always wished that I would get an Oscar. And so, tonight, my golden boy, you got your wish."
As Stanwyck's film career declined during the 1950s, she moved to television. In 1958 she guest-starred in "Trail to Nowhere", an episode of the Western anthology series Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre, portraying a wife who pursues, overpowers, and kills the man who murdered her husband. Later, in 1961, her drama series The Barbara Stanwyck Show was not a ratings success, but it earned her an Emmy Award. The show ran for a total of thirty-six episodes. She also guest-starred in this period on other television series, such as The Untouchables with Robert Stack and in four episodes of Wagon Train.
She stepped back into film for the 1964 Elvis Presley film Roustabout, in which she plays a carnival owner.
The western television series, The Big Valley, which was broadcast on ABC from 1965 to 1969, made her one of the most popular actresses on television, winning her another Emmy. She was billed in the series' opening credits as "Miss Barbara Stanwyck" for her role as Victoria, the widowed matriarch of the wealthy Barkley family. In 1965, the plot of her 1940 movie Remember the Night was adapted and used to develop the teleplay for The Big Valley episode "Judgement in Heaven".
In 1983, Stanwyck earned her third Emmy for The Thorn Birds. In 1985 she made three guest appearances in the primetime soap opera Dynasty prior to the launch of its short-lived spin-off series, The Colbys, in which she starred alongside Charlton Heston, Stephanie Beacham and Katharine Ross. Unhappy with the experience, Stanwyck remained with the series for only the first season, and her role as "Constance Colby Patterson" would be her last. It was rumored Earl Hamner Jr., former producer of The Waltons, had initially wanted Stanwyck for the role of Angela Channing in the 1980s soap opera Falcon Crest, and she turned it down, with the role going to her friend, Jane Wyman; when asked Hamner assured Wyman it was a rumor.
Stanwyck's retirement years were active, with charity work outside the limelight. In 1981, she was awakened in the middle of the night, inside her home in the exclusive Trousdale section of Beverly Hills, by an intruder, who first hit her on the head with his flashlight, then forced her into a closet while he robbed her of $40,000 in jewels.
The following year, in 1982, while filming The Thorn Birds, the inhalation of special-effects smoke on the set may have caused her to contract bronchitis, which was compounded by her cigarette habit; she was a smoker from the age of nine until four years before her death.
Stanwyck died on January 20, 1990, aged 82, of congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. She had indicated that she wanted no funeral service. In accordance with her wishes, her remains were cremated and the ashes scattered from a helicopter over Lone Pine, California, where she had made some of her western films.

10 most read authors
From @books-on-a-wire‘s post, there is a feature in Goodreads which shows your most read authors (as shelved in your collections).
Rex Stout 46 Yep, this would be from when I ploughed through his Nero Wolfe & Archie Goodwin books, many years ago now. I did recently read a pastiche by Robert Goldsborough, Murder in E Minor, which did a good job of capturing the feel of the books as best I remember. It has me tempted to pick out a few of the old books and revisit. My only other contact with Nero and Archie in recent memory was the TV series starring Timothy Hutton.
Elizabeth Peters 29 OK, if you add the seven books written under the name Barabara Michaels, plus her two non-fiction Egyptology books written under her real name of Barbara Mertz, this number jumps to 38. The bulk of that 29 is from a couple of years ago, when I managed to read through her entire Amelia Peabody series. (And having done that, a project for the new year may be revisiting that series as well, but at a slower pace.) The rest would be the Vicky Bliss books, a couple of Jacqueline Kirby’s, and some standalones.
Ellis Peters 24 Another one of fond memory. Just took the last Cadfael book off the shelf and was astonished to see it was published twenty-four years ago this month. It doesn’t seem that long. It’s starting to look like 2019 will be the year of the rereads... Hmm. But 24... Okay, that has to include one collection of short stories, another gorgeous hardcover that contains the text of the first two Cadfael novels, along with a section of text and photos related to the world of the books, and one book from her other mystery series... Aha! The George Felse one! (Had to look it up.) Throw in her A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury, written as Edith Pargeter, and this number gets bumped up to 25.
Agatha Christie 22 This one is a mix of rereading, and encountering some of other of her books for the first time, and is of recent origin. Didn’t get to too many this year, just Sleeping Murder (unless I sneak in one or two before the end of the year), but it’s been fun to go back and rediscover her. She holds up much better than first anticipated. Thanks has to go to the television adaptations, especially Poirot and Marple, and that 10th Doctor episode about Agatha’s infamous disappearance, for bringing me back into the Christie fold.
Martha Grimes 17 This is all the Richard Jury and Melrose Plant mysteries. Except it should be 19. Maybe I never recorded a couple of them? Will have to go and check later. And there are still four or five more to go. I like the first batch of the series better than some of the later books, but the characters are always such good company that flaws in the stories can be forgiven. A few of those first books have been reread so many times they’re starting to fall apart.
Douglas Preston 17 First, that should be Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I haven’t as yet read any of their solo novels. Second, and I had to check this, I cannot believe that number is real. (It is.) The bloom has gone off the rose and all that, but I can remember when it was a thrill to get my hands on the latest Agent Pendergast.
John D. MacDonald 15 This would be the Travis McGee series, which I haven’t visited in quite awhile now. Someday I will resume and get back to where I started ages and ages ago, The Dreadful Lemon Sky, and then proceed to the last books in the series. No idea how Travis holds up in the 21st century, but hopefully any of his 1960s ‘sins’ aren’t so glaring they can’t be forgiven.
Janet Evanovich 15 It kind of floors me that the Stephanie Plum series is up to twenty-five books at this point, not counting some sidetrip books that I never got around to having a look at. Make no mistake, when I first picked up One For the Money back in the day, I was happy to get on the Stephanie Plum train and stay there for a long time. Sometime around book eight or nine, though, the magic started to fade, and I hopped off for good at book fifteen. It was a treat while it lasted, and some of those first books got multiple readings, so that’s in no way a bad thing.
Mary Stewart 14 Yes! Okay, four of these would be her Arthurian trilogy + her Mordred novel, where she did the impossible and made me sympathize with him. Then I discovered she had also written a batch of gothic romance/romantic suspense novels, and could not get my hands on them fast enough. There are still a couple of titles missing from my collection, and I have yet to give Thunder On the Right a second chance, but she is one of those authors that is as close to a sure bet as you can get.
Robert Crais 13 This would be his Elvis Cole & Joe Pike series of private eye thrillers. I’ve been reading this one in a roundabout fashion for awhile now. Started with the first two, The Monkey’s Raincoat and Stalking the Angel, and then jumped ahead to L.A. Requiem, and fell into this pattern of reading one of the older titles, and then one of the newer ones, and finally got caught up in the timestream last year (although I’m a few recent books behind now). The climaxes are usually action-packed shoot-’em-ups that I tend to skim through, but that’s my only complaint. Well, and that we never get enough of the cat who loves Elvis and Joe and hates everyone else.
Honorable mentions: Charles Todd, the mother and son team behind the Ian Rutledge mysteries (shell-shocked Scotland Yard detective just back from the Great War, haunted by the battlefield and one particular soldier). Haven’t read their Bess Crawford books yet, but hope to soon. Victoria Holt & Nora Roberts, at nine books each. Victoria, alas, does not hold up well, but I’m still good with Nora. Rhys Bowen comes in with eight books; that would be four Molly Murphys, and four Lady Georgianas. I like Molly, but Lady Georgie is my favorite. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also comes it at eight. And Amanda Quick, Dorothy Sayers, David Eddings, and Lauren Willig all clock in at six. Willig will soon be seven; and Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz is likely to increase by several volumes in the new year.

BROADWAY
1926
Broadway is a play written and directed by George Abbott and Philip Dunning. It was Abbott's first big hit on his way to becoming "the most famous play doctor of all time" after he reworked Dunning's play. The crime drama used "contemporary street slang and a hard-boiled, realistic atmosphere" to depict the New York City underworld during Prohibition. It opened on September 16, 1926, at the Broadhurst Theatre and was one of the venue's greatest hits, running for 603 performances.

Carl Laemmle paid $225,000 for the film rights in 1927, a sum that set a record. Universal Pictures released Broadway on September 15, 1929.
It was filmed again in 1942 starring George Raft.
It opened in London at the Adelphi Theatre in 1927.
A one-hour adaptation of Broadway starring Joseph Cotten and Piper Laurie aired May 4, 1955, on the CBS TV series The Best of Broadway.
The story was also the first episode of the TV series “The Jazz Age” in September 1968.
Revivals
A 1978 Broadway-bound revival of Broadway, directed by Robert Allan Ackerman and musical staging by Dennis Grimaldi closed during its Boston tryout.
In 1987, Abbott himself (then 100 years old) directed a revival on Broadway that closed after just four performances.
