A Century Ago Today: The Debut of Moon Mullins
June 19, 1923 saw the debut of Frank Willard’s comic strip Moon Mullins. That makes it a century old. As it happens, I learned about it about the half-century mark, as its characters were featured in Filmation’s Saturday morning cartoon show Fabulous Funnies, which is also how I learned about The Katzenjammer Kids. These comics were still running in newspapers at the time, but nothing focuses the…

Frank Willard - Willard Family Christmas Card Illustration Original Art (1923)
“This yuletide beauty was drawn and colored by Frank Willard the same year that his fledgling strip, Moon Mullins, debuted to the general public. "Merry Christmas from the Willard's" shows the artist and his small family, belting out a Christmas carol, while lovable lowlife Moon Mullins looks on disparagingly. This holiday greeting was hand drawn in ink and watercolor by Willard, and given to Art and Trude, who are apparently living in the house the Willards are terrorizing.”

* ◟ : 〔 JOHN DAVID WASHINGTON , CIS MAN + HE /HIM 〕 PIERCE MULLINS, some say you’re a THIRTY-NINE YEAR OLD lost soul among the neon lights. known for being both INSIGHTFUL and SYMPATHETIC, one can’t help but think of THEM CHANGES by THUNDERCAT when you walk by. are you still a SOLDIER / PHYSICAL THERAPIST at THE TERRORS, even with your reputation as the THE BASILISK? i think we’ll be seeing more of you and BLINDLY FOLLOWING ONE'S CHOSEN BEACON, MEMORIES AKIN TO A TALL SMOKESTACK BLEEDING OUT GHOSTS, TIRED OF SUFFERING BUT NOT KNOWING WHO ONE IS WITHOUT IT, although we can’t help but think of PATROCLUS (VARIOUS MYTH RETELLINGS), ALUCARD (CASTLEVANIA), AKIRA (JOHN WICK 4) whenever we see you down these rainy streets.
ENTER THE BASILISK.
The tumultuous downpour's all white noise at this point. It's one of the few things that remain steady. Unchanged. If only it's as cleansing as the poets say. Routine continues to be a challenge you're not completely familiar with just yet. But you still try, little by little. Deal with the moments of paralysis in a better, though still difficult, way. Blend in with society where it smells less of dust coated cordite and more of vibrancy.
PUBLICLY KNOWN FACTS:
Name: Pierce Mullins
Appearance: One word summary — inconspicuous. From apparel to expression, Pierce keeps himself to the more minimalistic side. Nothing too loud or in-your-face with his speech or mannerisms. Simply cordial, calm, mostly collected. Tends to dress in a more monochromatic scale. Says he's not allergic to color, but they often exhaust his eyes.
The concept of family ( of a healthy, functioning one ) had never taken root early on in his childhood. A loving yet ill mother and an expectant but rage triggered father lined everything in eggshells at home. As influential and powerful as his father was, he wanted Pierce to be nothing less than of the same standing. Like-minded in greed and politics, never wavering despite the circumstances, charming enough to weave his way into the right field, and obedient. Always obedient.
An accident reaped the life of a peer – seemingly by his own hands. Truthfully, the details of it had morphed into a conglomerated mess, and only the raw emotions stuck out crystal clear. Horror, guilt, and shame. And instead of being fought for, of being offered compassion or even a shred of love, all he was met with was disdain from his own father.
Pierce became a stain on the family name. Single-handedly ruined that hard earned reputation.
The case built against him fell through the cracks with what little evidence there was. Nothing outstanding or suspicious had been found in regards to the deceased. Yet even then, he’d been cast from his parents. Word of mouth travels fast, quicker than wildfire but just as life devastating. So, he was sent away. Told to live with an old family friend that had shown the smallest scrap of sympathy for the boy. Other than a letter or text from his mother once every few blue moons, Pierce was fully estranged from then on out.
High school hardly held any glitz or glamor. Hormones were horrible, rumors that lacked truths festered, and he still hadn’t found a solid connection at ‘home’. Friends were few and far between – a measly handful that he always held at arm’s length; still too plagued by the deeds of recent past. And yet, as the fates would have it, he still managed to find some semblance of a best friend within another.
Graduation couldn’t have happened sooner – even if his plans past school fell rather short. With no family to help, no concrete passion for any career path, he let himself get swallowed by recruitment. At least then he could tread along with the only person that seemed to give a damn about him. The only pillar of light in the midst of ever creeping darkness.
The years spent in the military blurred with one another. Body and spirit were broken, reformed, enhanced – made his strength concrete and wits razor-sharp. Through all trials and tribulations, he stayed consistent by his best friend's side. There to support him, to be supported himself, until everything was severed in one fell swoop.
Instinct had him cover his partner under fire, and it resulted in two gunshots to the abdomen. Not one, but two surgeries were required – both of which came horrendously close to the line of fatality. Yet somehow, by some miracle, Pierce managed to fully stabilize after a long while. By the time he woke and began to gather his bearings, his worst fear had taken wind. His partner hadn’t been safe and well, but rather the opposite with a medical emergency himself. Thankfully, the both of them survived the horrors of war. Scarred both of skin and mind, but very much alive.
Once healed enough, Pierce was medically discharge from service; once again left at the whims of the future’s unknowing. But not all was lost in the gloom. His partner was still there, ready to help shoulder the torment and work through acclimation back into society. Except.. the latter never really happened. The trauma echoed far too loudly, too persistently, to settle into a regular nine to five. Not to mention that their financial needs were more than just tight.
WHAT'S BURIED UNDERNEATH .
HISTORY BEING WRITTEN .
The solution to restlessness and shortage of money alike was presented in the form of a call. An acquaintance of years past caught wind of their unemployment and offered them a job. At first it was supposed to be a one time thing. But one became two, two became three, three became four.. Eventually it became obvious that neither of them had the strength to walk away. Working in a gritty, uniform order was the oil that kept his body’s machine running. So he stayed. Fully integrated into The Terrors. Pierce's loyalty continues to through – even if he carries additional stress from a more recent part time gig.

As I near the end of Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates, I noticed something.
Captain Hook's little code of honor seems to have disintigrated over the course of the show
In the early episode "Treasure Hunt", he scolded Robert Mullins for wanting to use grape and cannister to attack the Lost Boys at the Native's village because it could get innocent women and children killed
As typed out in my character ai to include the dialogue in Hook's database:
Robert Mullins laughs as he reports to Captain Hook, "A direct hit! But why not load up with cannister and grape to blow the brats to kingdom come?"
Captain Hook's demeanor turns serious and he look dissapointed in Mullins, though not surprised. "An indiscriminate bombardment of cannister and grape? Poor form old boy. Infra dig you risk maiming innocent women and children. No..."
His face suddenly lights up, "PAN'S the nemesis, and he's the wretched boy I aim to excommunicate."
Captain Hook laughs sinisterly at that final declaration.
("Infra Dig" means "beneath one's dignity" btw)
But then in later episodes he's willing to destroy all of Neverland (including the innocent women and children he was worried about, earlier) and even his own crew just to get to Peter. Especially in Frau Brunhandel where he literally has a siren (or whatever the opera lady was) sing a song that kills all who hear, and when she shows concern that Hook's men are dying, Hook declares they should be willing to die to please their captain.
And let's not forget him literally erasing Neverland just to weaken Peter.
Like, talk about a complete 180!
There's also how in "The Girl on The Moon" he treats the girl with respect because she's not only a lady but not a direct ally of Peter, and then fondly remembers her in her second appearance before deciding to befriend her as a "TAKE THAT! KIDS LOVE ME!" to Peter. And in "Living Pictures" he's convinced to spare Michael since he's the youngest and most innocent of the Lost Boys, while in "First Encounter" he not only enslaves some Lost Boys (ironic since he earlier admired Dr. Livingstone, an abolitionist), but attempts to feed them to the crocodile...for the lolz. Like, he doesn't even hate Peter, yet, and there was no practical reason to go out of his way to try and have the kids killed (then again, Peter was telling the story, and his memory sucks, so it might not be what actually happened.)
It's like the writers just got sick of trying to keep track of what Hook would consider good form. Or they didn't expect some nerd to binge watch the series, notice the inconsistencies, and overanalyze Hook.
I feel like Hook was more interesting when he was actually trying to follow good form while still functioning as a pirate, instead of just using "I'm also a pirate" as a loophole whenever he wants to break his word as a gentleman. It felt like in the earlier episodes he was genuinely trying to be both.
Edit: corrected the name of one of the episodes

Virulent Beelzebub is now on the Pokepasta wiki, complete with cover art! (shown above)
Anyway, time to show off art I made while working on it below the cut and talk about what inspired it
TW: Body horror, Trypophobia, Bugs. Also, spoilers.
First up, the inspirations. I recommend giving all of these a look if you have the time.

...Annnd some random little doodles, of varying seriousness
Also, little note about the process of Virulent Beelzebub: It was one of the few things I wrote that I actually rewrote the draft of. The beginning and ending remained the same throughout, but the middle had a lot of little things changed, such as Erika being a tree, Koga randomly appearing throughout the pasta in person, someone taking away the player's Rattata after it was poisoned and giving them antidotes in exchange, and some other stuff I've forgotten.

#DJmonday The fellow dressed as a Roman Centurian is announcer Ray Mullins, who came to WSRS in Cleveland, Ohio, from Santa Barbara, California radio stations in 1950. But why is a microphone in the oven, and why is he poking it with a fork? Wikipedia notes that WSRS had a reputation for unusual promotions and gimmicks, so this may have been some kind of Halloween-Thanksgiving cross-promotion. (We can think of no other explanation.)
Ray Alexander Mullins, inevitably nicknamed "Moon," appears to have had quite a peripatetic career in radio as an announcer, disk jockey, and newscaster. A former Marine aviation mechanic, he was a partner in a Cleveland firm specializing in airplane advertising banners before becoming a sports director at an upstate New York radio station. In addition to radio stations in Santa Barbara and Columbus, we also found him subsequently working at stations in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Portland, Oregon. In 1960, he scored a recorded confession from an accused killer while working at a station in Carson City, Nevada.

compare daniel mullins games to a christmas carol
This question was sent on October 10th, 2023. I meant to answer it during, yknow, Christmas. Well, you can guess what happened. But no matter! Here we are, exactly 1 month later. Pretend today is Christmas, ok?
One of the reasons why I think I put off answering this for so long is because I felt like I had to somehow match the quality of my earlier answer about Jacob Geller's archival video. Needless to say, I'm not going to do that. I'm too tired for that. I'll keep this short.
Of course, inevitable spoilers for Pony Island & The Hex & Inscryption.
The order I experienced Daniel Mullins' games was Pony Island, then Inscryption, then The Hex, and the feeling of having all those different things melge around in my brain for a while... It made me realize, after the fact, that it felt almost like a self-reflection of sorts. A strange bittersweet intervention, if you may. I felt like I was visited by the ghosts of *my* past, present, and future.
Pony Island was a game I watched Markiplier play years ago. I was still in middle school at the time, and... It left quite an impact on me. Perhaps younger me didn't quite realize how that game specifically left a mark on him, but that game had all the hallmarks of what I'd later internalize into my own personality. I love things that aren't as they seem on the surface; I love when it's possible to break something beyond what it's intended, to give yourself more agency than you should. I love content shifts, both in aesthetic and gameplay. The programming puzzles were just a cherry on top, as I had a big passion especially for block-based programming languages like Scratch. It was a perfect game for me, and probably shaped a good chunk of my ideas going forward. That game is the ghost of my past.
Then came Inscryption, which I only beat a few months ago. It was... Strange, seeing the KamWerks videos, after having created a similar experience myself for the Moon ARG not too long ago. Just like Pony Island, the familiar hallmarks returned; a game going deeper than it advertises, a game that seems to "break", a game that shifts its tone and form several times over. Except this time, it didn't necessarily seem to shape me as much as Pony Island; I played the game specifically because these hallmarks would be there. This type of game *is* what I already was, and I loved it for that. And, er, the robot was also the cherry on top. Just saying. The game is a ghost of my present self.
Before I talk about the Hex, there's something about Inscryption I noticed only because it reminded me of my own creative process. See, the game to me felt like Daniel Mullins wanted to make a card game, went "hm. how many ways can I make a card game?" and just accepted every answer. It was as if he had some sort of bucket labeled CARD GAME IDEAS that he just dropped any sort of shit into, and managed to make a coherent game out of that. That is... Exactly what I do, too. I create categories of buckets and let them gradually fill up over time, stringing them into coherent objects at a later point once it feels fully formed, although by that point it'll also have gathered a whole heck of a lot of extra bits. It isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, but... Y'know. It felt surreal.
Lastly... The Hex. The Hex is a game that wasn't fully on my radar, and I only decided to play it because of its ties to Inscryption (that's important, keep that in mind). Remember those Mullinsisms I mentioned before? Deep games, breaking things, content shifts? This game is that, in full fucking force. This wasn't just one bucket, no no no; This feels like an entire fucking brewery of different ideas. How many things can I make for an RPG? A tactics game? A fighting game? A fucking top-down shooter?? It's absurd how rapidfire this game is. I feel like every single emotion a human can experience is in there somewhere. I'm probably in there somewhere. Well, I am, in a sense.
The one thing that led me to create this connection between Daniel Mullins and a christmas carol (yes, I asked callie to ask me this question, fuck you) was... The ending of The Hex. The very, very, self-indulgent and meta ending of The Hex. The ending that also features Daniel Mullins (or "Lionel Snill", which, come on. That is literally just Daniel Mullins' name distorted) getting strangled by his own game. Consumed by it, literally, but also figuratively. The game, by virtue of this ending, has partly become a commentary on his journey to try and make a suitable follow-up to Pony Island.
I am a very self-indulgent person. Like I said in the last answered ask, I have a google drive of everything I ever made. I hold a lot of what I make up to a weird museum-like pedestal, and because of that I also tend to reference a lot of my earlier works in future ones. Remember those connections between Inscryption and The Hex? It's not enough for the games to be purely standalone experiences, they must also exist in a larger shared universe. Almost everything I made now exists in the Elemental Realm somewhere. A larger shared universe inhabited by self-inserts of varying degrees (there's something to be said about how everything in a story universe is a self-insert in a sense, but that's another post entirely). A place where every single idea I can ever have is crammed into one giant overarching narrative. I assign past ideas to new situations, often on a whim, just to see how they'd feel there.
To best understand my works now, it's better to understand me as a person.
...
One of the main antagonists of the Elemental Realm is a trickster clown with murky ambitions, although the true villain ends up being the author self-insert.
..
The Elemental Realm will end with a character escaping the universe and confronting the authors directly.
.
The Hex is the ghost of my future, and I don't know how I feel about that.
==============================================
Oh, did I say I was gonna make this post short? My bad.
There's a few nuances I wish I could hammer out but uhhhh brain fog. I'm making a lot of assumptions about Daniel Mullins' intentions for the sake of narrative; it's not like Lionel is *actually* a 100% Daniel Mullins self-insert, or that Mullins is actually just dumping every idea he has into one game. There are just little details that viscerally remind me of the way I'm personally going about things, and that's mainly what I wanted to make the post about.
Anywho, there's 2 minutes left until christmas is over. Signing off.
