A Jewel Is Born (Chapter 1)

Written for Asmodeus's Birthday 2023! Description: Asmodeus wasn't born as the Avatar of Lust. He hadn't always been one of Lucifer's brothers. He wasn't created to be one of the Seven Rulers of the Devildom. What he was created for, was beauty. That much has never changed. Can also be read on AO3 here!

Day 1 - Awakening

From the moment Asmodeus was born, he knew beauty. It was interwoven into every moment of his creation -- a destiny to be the most beautiful being that had ever lived and ever would.

The Jewel of the Heavens began as a pearl, lustrous and lovely, resting upon a bed of white silk in a jewelry box lined with glass -- mirrors within, with a clear view to the inside from beyond its walls. The entire case was illuminated by tiny stars that filled the space, their crystalline lights reflected infinitely in the glass to highlight the perfectly smooth sheen of the round pearl at its center.

And from this pearl, his Father drew out strands of glittering thread, weaving them through the stars into limbs, a torso, a face. All the shimmering flawless beauty of the gem made up every bit of his new angel's being. Fluttering robes came together over his form, white and purple, every star stitched into shining golden accents. A perfect doll, with the sweetest sherry-gold eyes fluttering back up at his creator.

A sparkling golden halo finished the creation, just the same as all his angels, and with that final touch, gave him life.

As the new angel's mind began to awaken, all around him were the mirrors of the box he lay in. In every direction, he saw himself -- the very concept of beauty given angelic form. Light bounced off his smooth skin, the iridescence of his origins still lingering upon his surface. A soft breath of wonder escaped him at the sight, and as he drew himself up to standing, the walls fell open around him like elegantly blooming petals of a great glass flower.

From farther beyond, he could see another angel standing beside a gateway, spear upright in hand and nodding politely to him. He registered the most beautiful parts of his boyish-faced greeter first -- the smooth arch of his jaw, the muscular curves of his exposed abdomen, the sweetly unassuming smile reaching up to lovely blue eyes behind a dusty ash grey mop of hair.

An exquisite smile slid across the newborn's impeccable features, and a pair of magnificent white feather wings spread out behind him, gliding him forward towards the gate. Taking the other angel's hand in his, he kissed it sweetly, batting his eyelashes up at him. "Well, hello there. What's your name, handsome?"

The other's smile dropped away quickly, replaced momentarily by some mixture of confusion and displeasure. He pulled his hand back before bowing his head again in polite deference, stiffly returning his expression to serious neutrality.

"Welcome, brother. I am the angel Raphael, and I have come to guide you to the Celestial Realm. What is your name?"

The answer entered his mind naturally, without even a moment's hesitation, and sounded like honey and stardust upon his tongue.

"I am the angel Asmodeus."

Listening to this one fire cover of Order (Megacheb's) and I was thinking what if during the Minos Prime fight Minos snatches V1 by the neck and gives you an unskippable cutscene of Minos flying upwards through the layers of Gluttony and ascending through the city streets of Lust, the Requiem motif culminating as a very scenic view of Lust's skyline is shown That would be so awesome and also the fight continuing on in the desolate streets and alleys of Lust would be amazing in my opinion I love King Minos

actually ascension needs its own post since that's the one with the most details to speculate over and im starved for soho talk so i will talk to myself if need be

First the cover again, because I kinda can't get over it:

my only thing is that I had been hoping we might get Lizbeth on a cover again since she's never been on one of the boxsets before, despite being the 2nd person credited on all 4 of them (even if that's just alphabetical, still, she's the only one of the four main characters who never makes the cover)

But letting that go...

I know we already kinda knew the brief for this one but damn I didn't expect it to go quite this hard. Maybe that's just because the Parasite & Ashenden covers were (comparatively) similarish to each other and I was so pleased with Unbegotten's, and then got so used to it as the placeholder for Ascension while they kept postponing it, I wasn't expecting anything this colorful or detailed or with what I can't help but register as Fun New Outfits even though these are still like, pretty damn basic as far as costumes go. Still, it's a different vibe from everyone in suits and trenchcoats on every cover, technically. (Oh the woes of being an audio fan such that two characters owning sweaters actually does qualify as new information)

On top of just being visually delightful though, I know we knew religion was gonna be a fairly big part of this one, but I didn't actually expect to get quite this much of it - though I'm glad of it for a number of reasons. The BF twitter already made the ineffable joke so I don't have to, but also yeah I did very much spend all of season 2 episode 4 of good omens half convinced Samuel Barnett & Dervla Kirwan were about to pop up around any given corner (if you will go around being gay supernatural and horrible at your messy bureaucratic jobs in midcentury soho then I'm sorry, this is where my brain's gonna go) - so, fuel to that fire. But in terms of actual important things, at least one of my Soho wishes looks to be being granted because we have a Rev Edward Folgate on the cast list, which must mean we're finally meeting Norton's father, even if his mother & brother don't appear (which they could, technically, I've definitely seen BF not list all the doublings on their cast tabs before). Religion, domesticity, and the nuclear family are all things that absolutely fascinate me when it comes to Norton's character, so getting any amount of story involving his father & his church is something I've been actively hoping for for a long time now.

(I will say I'm a tiny bit bummed Saffron Coomber isn't on the cast list to play Mia again, but I kinda figured she wasn't going to be since Greg Austin's Armitage, who's making his first recurring appearance after originating in Unbegotten, was listed ever since the boxset was announced - presumably if she was also returning, that would've been handled in the same way. But since Unbegotten ended with Lizbeth and Mia going on a date, I still held out hope. Who knows though, maybe things did go well for them and Lizbeth just has a better work/life balance than Norton so she can date someone without them getting dragged into every scifi plot. I know that's not a very common accomplishment for any Torchwood agent, but a gal can hope)

At this point I know I'm completely in the realm of speculation & even wishful thinking, but I'm really really hoping we get some more clues as to Norton's overall timeline in this one, and I have a feeling that even if there's nothing as direct as dates given, the events of a plot like this one are going to heavily influence my personal interpretation of it.

To say that life & death are major themes for the soho crew feels wildly reductive, but even by Torchwood's standards and taking into account its origins as a piece of media with Jack Harkness & his newfound immortality at the heart of it, the living/dead status of this bunch has always been fantastically up in the air to me. Obviously Ghost Mission introduced Norton as kind of a ghost before revealing more obvious ghostly characters later on to which the title might have been referring, but his being from the past did beg the question of his survival into Torchwood's present era all the same, which Outbreak later alludes to much more directly, and his habit of showing up via hologram in multiple stories only further obfuscates any certainty we might have about where & when he definitely can be said to be alive and well. Then you've got Lizbeth and Gideon both being effectively 'brought back to life' via paradoxes that prevented them ever having died in the first place. Again, they are very very far from being the only Torcwhood characters this happens to (for a sprawling EU, it's really rather impressive how often & in how many different ways Torchwood as a whole manages to circle back to being about like. chaotic undead queers at the end of every day. though I suppose that consistency is part of why I keep falling in love with its different iterations again and again). That's without even getting into the question of Norton's dubious fate in God Among Us - and I say dubious because I know some people take that to be his ultimate death, but I personally think that reading something as vague as that as having any kind of finality rather goes against the spirit of this whole world/series, not just because I want him to live. (There are obviously other ways to make him survive/reappear, but I don't see this as a River Song scenario where we can safely assume one of his earlier-released adventures had to happen at the end of his personal timeline). But wherever God Among Us falls for him, he does very much meet God in it - or at least, a god, since the sentinel in Unbegotten is also described as a god of sorts, and even if he doesn't ultimately have the status of the god Jacqueline King is playing there, Unbegotten is still full to bursting with ghosts/undead/came back wrong/echo characters to continue underscoring that life/afterlife theme.

So all things considered, even allowing for the fact that we know Norton's twin hobbies are lying about himself and abusing time travel to suit his own ends/ever-shifting alliances, I find it difficult to believe we could get through a whole 6-part boxset about religion & death without something providing some kind of compelling evidence about where this adventure fits in among his other run-ins with apocalypses and gods and ghosts and dead-but-still-here characters/creatures, so I'm very much looking forward to any further exploration on that front.

And lastly, and least intellectually, I really want to know what the hell 20th-century Torchwood's obsession with Reginalds is. Reading through the cast list, I had to do two separate doubletakes over the character 'Sir Reginald Peebles' - firstly, because I had Reginald Rigsby on the brain, this being Soho (and the other Troughton brother being so active on BF's releases for this same month) - and secondly, because reading this in conjunction with the announcement for the July monthly adventure in which the new main Torchwood guy of the 20s is apparently called Sir Reginald Dellafield, there was a brief moment where I took that monthly release to be a tie-in with Ascension. I don't expect it to be, but damn. was it really so popular a name?

anyways, catch me thinking about those stained glass windows for the next couple months I guess (and knowing Torchwood Soho, for a long long time after it comes out as well lol)

Day 4 - Raphael's Spears

"Asmodeus, this shameless flirting is utterly improper for an angel. Please learn to control yourself, for the dignity of the Celestial Realm."

It had been only four days since Asmodeus's glittering, luxuriant birth, and in that span, Raphael had given this lecture at least twice as many times already. Nevertheless, the realm's newest angel seemed stubbornly determined to defy his guidance, playing innocent every time -- just as he was doing now.

Asmodeus sniffled at him, teary-eyed, from within the cage of spears within which he found himself entrapped. They had come down from the sky so suddenly, one even nearly nicking the perfectly unblemished skin of his cheek, he couldn't help the water pooling at the edges of his innocently pleading eyes. That, and he'd happened to catch his reflection in a mirror the day before, similarly tearing up as he listened to another young angel gushing over how lovely he looked, and had realized at that moment how he looked even more innocently, helplessly alluring by doing so, and so he now took every opportunity to do so again.

"But Raphael, I can't help that I'm so beautiful! Father made me to be shared with the world!" he wailed, letting the tears fall delicately from the corners of his eyes.

The young seraph sighed deeply with exasperation, fingers tightening on the spear in hand before consciously reminding himself to loosen his grip. "Once again, Asmodeus, Father created you for the same reason He created all of us -- to be servants and messengers of His will. How many times do you need to be told before you will understand this?"

"I understand just fine," the beautiful angel pouted. "But if we're messengers, then obviously the message I'm meant to relay is how amazing his creations are! And the only way I can spread that message is by being myself, the beautiful and enchanting Asmo!"

"You do not need to enchant anyone. Entrancing people is the tactic of base demons, not high angels as we are. His will goes far beyond just you, Asmodeus. You need to learn to see beyond yourself," the other insisted again. "As his messengers, we must always hold ourselves with dignity and maintain our decorum. Running off on flights of fancy and chasing the other angels this way is entirely inappropriate."

Asmo sighed, plopping down to his knees inside the cage as he only half-listened to the rest of the lecture. There was never any winning with Raphael, it seemed, and so there was nothing he could do but wait out the rest.

Sure, maybe this was a little bit his fault. Maybe he'd been preening in front of a mirror again, and perhaps he had run just a bit late for his duties because of it. But it wasn't his fault that another angel had approached to compliment how his feathery robes matched his wings so nicely, which then led to another stopping him to praise how his skin almost seemed to glow in the ever light of the Celestial Realm, and then yet another paused to fawn over the delicate curl of how his locks around his face so softly. It hadn't been long before a small crowd had gathered around him, but he couldn't help that! These were such sincere admirers, he couldn't possibly have pushed them away just to do some silly chores!

And, really, wasn't it only right for him to take the time to express back all the ways he found each of them lovely as well? Each of them also had such wonderful charms, in their own ways. So did the other angels who just happened to pass by, and it seemed to him that they also ought to know how exquisite they all were. It would surely brighten their day, each and every one of them, to be complimented by someone as beautiful as him, right?

And besides, it was true, wasn't it, that he, along with everyone else in this realm, had been created by their Father? Then, wasn't what Raphael called "flirting" really just admiring Father's creations? Wasn't he just sharing the love that Father had filled him with? How could that possibly be undignified to the realm?

The sharp metal clang of a spear tip against metal jolted the new angel out of his sulking.

"If you are not listening to me, Asmodeus, it seems I will have no choice but to personally oversee your tasks for the rest of the day," Raphael frowned, massaging his forehead with exhaustion. "Though I have my own duties for Michael to take care of as well..."

"Nope, no, that's perfectly okay! I hear you loud and clear," Asmo quickly responded, flashing his best compliant smile. A whole day of being babysat by this killjoy was the last thing he wanted. "No more flirting, I got it! No need to worry about little old Asmo, you just go ahead and do that stuff for Michael! I'll be just fine on my own, I promise!"

The seraph glared at the plainly contrived assurances. The stress, however, thinking of Michael's various requests, was clear on his face. "Very well," he relented at last. "But please try to control yourself and simply complete your tasks. I assume you understand the consequences if there are any more incidents."

"Absolutely! Just count on me!" Asmo answered brightly.

With a bang of his spear against the ground, the cage vanished, and Raphael began walking away, his deep sigh audible as he did so.

"Yes, finally!" Asmodeus cheered to himself once the seraph was a fair distance away, watching his retreating form. "Now, let's see, my tasks for today...oh! Right, I have to clean the baths today! Hmm...if I have to clean them anyway, I'm sure it'll be fine if I take a quick soak in there myself first. And I can use those new bath salts that Nithael gave me earlier! Ooh, he was such a cutie, with how shyly he came up to me with them. I bet he'd be super happy if I gave him a little smooch the next time I see him as thanks..."
