pure vanilla has poor eyesight without his staff and he’s very near-sighted, so when he wants to take a look at something, he has to get up close and.. quite personal. everyone who knows him doesn’t mind, they understand this odd habit is just another way pure vanilla expresses his love for the world around him.

so of course, when dark cacao came back from beast yeast, donning an elegant new outfit and a newfound confidence, pure vanilla was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to take a closer look at him.

“there you are, my dear!” he leans in so close, close enough that the two of them could kiss. he’s all smiles, radiating that same warmth and affection that always makes dark cacao’s heart clench with an unfamiliar emotion.

“you look.. good. more.. relaxed. happy.” there’s a fondness in pure vanilla’s eyes, like he genuinely couldn’t be happier to see dark cacao is the slightest bit less tense than usual. he probably is, knowing him. he can probably tell that dark cacao’s cheeks are flushed as well, despite how hard something like that may be to spot for anyone else.

the resolute king, stoic as he always is, doesn’t say a word. he can’t think of anything to say. he can’t think straight, with pure vanilla being so close to him, while looking at him like that.

true to his forgiving nature, pure vanilla takes no offence.

“you must be tired, after such a long journey. come, have some tea with me!”

tired.. yes, dark cacao supposes he is tired. the journey was long and arduous, far too many days spent in unfamiliar, hostile territory.

and yet, he can’t deny, he’s positively filled with energy upon seeing pure vanilla’s always-welcoming smile.

So I read a blog post advancing the thesis that the reason Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun has failed to find widespread acclaim outside of its cult following is that its old-fashioned, traditional themes failed to catch on in a world of increasingly socially-relevant science fiction, and this seemed straightforwardly wrong to me. The Book of the New Sun is, IMO, much more fantasy than science fiction--there are sci-fi elements and a far future setting, sure, but fundamentally this is a story about a prophesied chosen one with a cool sword wandering around a quasi-medieval world. And fantasy with "traditonal," timeless themes and no obvious social relevance remains very popular. The most unquestionably canonical modern fantasy novel is, after all, The Lord of the Rings, as suffused in traditional ideas and Christian morality as you could desire.

But nonetheless, The Book of the New Sun, for its cult acclaim, remains relatively obscure. Why is this? I think it's fairly straightforward: it's the Ulysses of swords and sorcery. This means that on the one hand, it's a dense, difficult work filled with allusions and references liable to fly over the unobservent reader's head, but on the other hand, it's also fundamentally pulp fiction, with all the violence, cliches, and dubious treatment of women one might expect from such a work. The result is that the literary crowd blanches at the pulp, and the pulp crowd struggles with the literary elements. In theory a balance between the two should be possible (see: Cormac McCarthy), but in practice Wolfe fails to hit it--the literary parts are too literary, the pulp is too pulpy. The overlap between fans of Joyce and fans of Vance and Leiber is enough to garner acclaim but not enough to make it a hit.

The kitten had completely emptied the dish of cream. He sat down with an audible thump on his tiny backside, rubbed the last of the delicious white stuff from his whiskers, then ambled slowly toward the bed, sides bulging visibly. He sprang up onto the coverlet, burrowed close to me, and fell promptly asleep.

Perhaps not quite asleep; I could feel the small vibration of his purring through the quilt.

“What do you think I should call him?” I mused aloud, touching the tip of the soft, wispy tail. “Spot? Puff? Cloudy?”

“Foolish names,” Jamie said, with a lazy tolerance. “Is that what ye were wont to call your pussie-baudrons in Boston, then? Or England?”

“No. I’ve never had a cat before,” I admitted. “Frank was allergic to them—they made him sneeze. And what’s a good Scottish cat name, then—Diarmuid? McGillivray?” He snorted, then laughed.

“Adso,” he said, positively. “Call him Adso.”

“What sort of name is that?” I demanded, twisting to look back at him in amazement. “I’ve heard a good many peculiar Scottish names, but that’s a new one.” He rested his chin comfortably on my shoulder, watching the kitten sleep.

“My mother had a wee cat named Adso,” he said, surprisingly. “A gray cheetie, verra much like this one.” “Did she?” I laid a hand on his leg. He rarely spoke of his mother, who had died when he was eight.

“Aye, she did. A rare mouser, and that fond of my mother; he didna have much use for us bairns.” He smiled in memory. “Possibly because Jenny dressed him in baby-gowns and fed him rusks, and I dropped him into the millpond, to see could he swim. He could, by the way,” he informed me, “but he didna like to.” “I can’t say I blame him,” I said, amused.

“Why was he called Adso, though? Is it a saint’s name?” I was used to the peculiar names of Celtic saints, from Aodh—pronounced OOH—to Dervorgilla, but hadn’t heard of Saint Adso before. Probably the patron saint of mice. “Not a saint,” he corrected. “A monk.

My mother was verra learned—she was educated at Leoch, ye ken, along with Colum and Dougal, and could read Greek and Latin, and a bit of the Hebrew as well as French and German. She didna have so much opportunity for reading at Lallybroch, of course, but my father would take pains to have books fetched for her, from Edinburgh and Paris.”

He reached across my body to touch a silky, translucent ear, and the kitten twitched its whiskers, screwing up its face as though about to sneeze, but didn’t open its eyes. The purr continued unabated.

“One of the books she liked was written by an Austrian, from the city of Melk, and so she thought it a verra suitable name for the kit.” “Suitable . . .?” “Aye,” he said, nodding toward the empty dish, without the slightest twitch of lip or eyelid.

“Adso of Milk.”

A slit of green showed as one eye opened, as though in response to the name. Then it closed again, and the purring resumed.

“Well, if he doesn’t mind, I suppose I don’t,” I said, resigned. “Adso it is.”

This is the Kraang Saga. It takes places 2 1/2 years after Darker Side of the Shadows. The Muses and the turtles have gotten stronger since the battle with Karai, Han, Baxter with his Mousers. Trouble continues to lurk as the couples continue their routines: the turtles protecting the city. The Muses fighting on the Frontlines to end human trafficking. While I'm chipping away at some outfit refs for Lev; Meet Henry, Erhart's lighthouse cat!

Henry has been a staple of the lighthouse since Lev first showed Erhart the ropes. Back then only a kitten, Lev mused she was most likely a ratter's offspring that had found its way off of a ship moored in Silvermouth. Wherever she's come from, years later (both Lev and Erhart back in their respective lighthouses signaling to one another across the channel) Erhart still maintains she's not his (she is) and that he doesn't feed her (he does) and doesn't let her inside (he doesn't have to. She finds her way in). She's never far behind. 

A skilled ratter and mouser, she has kept Aspyre's lighthouse blessedly free of vermin, and has enabled a small group of razorbills to nest at the foot of the cliffs again. Erhart calls her Henry, or 'it', alternating between the two. With Henbane -the dog- and Henbane -the horse- animals of his younger years, she's his only current pet, as much as he protests she's not, in fact, his pet.

Five fun facts AU: Henry owns a bookshop who takes public transport to work every day. He keeps getting glimpses of Alex through the crowd, always reading, and Henry is all 🥵 about him... until one day they end up sitting next to/across from each other and Henry realises Alex dog-ears his books.

ONE: henry's bookstore not mainstream popular but it is well-known in the NYC queer scene. when you're at the bar, lamenting the fact that all queer spaces have alcohol? henry's bookstore. when you're on reddit, asking for queer-friendly places to go? henry's bookstore. when you're crying over a paper, trying to get your hands on some obscure out of print work by a queer author? henry's bookstore. henry knows this, kinda, but he doesn't really get what he means to people yet.

TWO: alex buys beat-up paperbacks and devours them--on his commute, when he's waiting for his emails to be returned, on the treadmill, in line at the coffee store, on his lunch break, in the middle of the night when he can't sleep. he's not lonely--he has june and nora (his sister and his ex/her girlfriend) and raf and zahra (his bosses) and random hinge dates he hangs out with for a couple months before they inevitable get bored with each other or annoyed with each other or both. the obsessive reading--that's just a cute little hobby :) he's just trying to read 100 books this year :) nothings wrong with him :))

THREE: henry's bookstore (no name yet) is a small, skinny store in NYC, tucked in between a bodega and the best thai restaurant he's ever had in his life. the bodega has a cat, grey tabby, gorgeous, and wonderful mouser. hates david with a passion. she's named something like fifi or pippa or minnie. david just wants her to love him back. it's a love story for the ages--david constantly stopping henry just to stare longingly after her, her hissing at him through the window, henry and the bodega owner laughing.

FOUR: alex and henry live two stops away from each other, get off at the same stop, but walk in opposite directions. henry gets on after alex does, and Totally Accidentally finds himself in prime position to watch alex. he's handsome and tired and artfully mused, fancy backpack (a gift from his mom) in his lap or worn against his chest, a single loose curl always falling across his forehead the same way everyday, dark circles under his big beautiful brown eyes. he's a painting, framed by metal poles and the press of rush hour bodies. he's a statue, carved out of everything henry could possibly want. he's gorgeous, a voracious reader, untouchable--and totally scrumptious (pez's words (henry agrees))

← ONCE UPON A TIME WAS A LONG TIME AGO →

Bitter are the wars between brothers — even when the brothers are not biological. Brotherhood has both the potential to be affirming and detrimental, and Jasper Hook has experienced both. In the beginning of his life, Jasper was on his own. Left at the Darling Home for Wayward Children, the poor orphan grew up parentless. It was there that he met fellow abandoned child Peter Banning, and the two soon became the closest of friends. Peter and Jasper got into a fair amount of trouble over the summers they spent together as they grew; Peter was the type to always scheme and want more, but Jasper was content to live in the moment. The older they got, the more reckless Peter got. Jasper was concerned but went along with it until they reached a breaking point.

Peter wanted to turn into a vampire. He thought it was a great idea even though they were both under eighteen and it would break the rules. It was at this time that a fisherman and his wife took an interest in adopting Jasper. He had to choose between eternal undead life with his friend or the family he had always wanted. Promising Peter they’d always be friends, Jasper was officially adopted and moved into a tiny house by the sea. Peter was enraged at what he believed to be a betrayal by his friend, and a bitter feud began. While Peter seethed, Jasper settled nicely into his new life. He took an instant liking to being on the sea and his adopted father joked that salt water ran through his veins. While the three of them didn’t have much based on his fathers fisherman income, the new family was happy. Jasper didn’t care much for the school they enrolled him in and would instead spend his days fishing at his fathers side or playing piano with his mother. He was, by all means, a lover rather than a fighter. Jasper believed things in his life were better than before and would continue to be. He was, unfortunately, wrong.

Although he moved out of the Darling Home, Jasper still stopped by to check in with Minerva Mouser. He was young still when he first met a new resident by the name of Taylor Bell. Enthralled by young affection, Jasper thought himself to be in love with her. Jasper drank her presence like air, never able to get enough of Taylor. He imagined himself with her forever until Peter reared his head once more. At this point, he had begun to amass a group of underaged vampires he called the Lost Boys. Peter set his sights on Taylor and Jasper had no idea. Peter whispered in Taylor’s ear, seducing her while spreading lies about Jasper. Jasper wanted to stay far away from Peter, but Taylor fell under his thrall. He was devastated the day she approached him and revealed that she had allowed Peter to turn her. Heartbroken, Jasper rejected Taylor and made it clear she never wanted to see her again. A strong dislike of the supernatural subsequently began to grow in his heart.

Heartbreak aside, Jasper continued to grow. He was sleeping one night when the sound of singing awoke him. A haunting melody floated along with the roar of the waves, and when the young man stumbled outside he saw a beautiful woman laying on the rocks. The woman wasn’t alone, however, and laying beside her was Jasper’s father. At first, he couldn’t believe it. His father loved his mother. What was he doing with this strange songstress? The longer he watched the two of them, however, the more Jasper realized that his father was unfaithful. In the morning he was greeted as if nothing had occurred, and his father smiled and kissed his wife as if he hadn’t been with another woman only hours before.

For weeks, Jasper wrestled with what he wanted to do. Did he tell his mother and break her heart? Or did he let his father get away with the wrong he had done to their family? Jasper stopped accompanying his father out on fishing trips as he mused over what was the right action. Finally, Jasper decided that he would tell his mother what he had witnessed. It turned out that he was too late, however, as Jasper’s father beat him to it. The woman that Jasper’s father had been with was a siren, a beautiful and alluring creature of the sea who were fabled to have lived around Walt’s Landing although no one ever saw them. She was one of the last of her kind, and she was with child. Specifically, she was with the child of Jasper’s father.

Everything changed in the Hook household. Jasper was at the age where he’d move out and live on his own, but he didn’t want to leave his mother as she dealt with heartbreak. It was because of this that he and his mother moved to a small apartment away from the water while the siren moved in with Jasper’s father for the duration of her pregnancy. Jasper did his best to stay away from the house as he wanted nothing to do with his father nor the siren, and a deep hatred for the supernatural continued to grow. He was forced to watch his mother all but shut down as depression ate away at her, and soon he had to take a job as a dock boy to try and pay for their expenses as she had stopped going to work. Despite his reluctance to step foot near his father, Jasper was awakened one night by a terrible storm and felt himself drawn to the water. There was a horrible but beautiful sound filling the air, and as he approached the shore he realized it was coming from his fathers home.

Inside, the siren was finally giving birth. Jasper found himself unable to leave as a small baby girl was born, a girl who was his adopted sister. Jasper assisted his father in wrapping the newborn up, and no sooner than they had done so they realized something. The siren was gone. True to her siren nature, she had turned and slipped back into the sea as sirens rarely ever raised their own children. Jasper’s father was horrified and panic filled. He was unable to accept the fact that he’d have to raise a supernatural baby on his own after already going through the shame of having an affair with a siren. Seeing no other choice, Jasper’s father waded into the surf and left the baby to die. 

Jasper wanted the baby gone. He really did. It was his sister, yes, but her mother had ruined his life. Hearing it’s pealing cries, however, Jasper found he was unable to let her drown and rescued the child from the waves. Knowing that he couldn’t bring it home and break his mothers heart further, Jasper made a rash choice. He had heard rumors of a caster coven who had retreated below the waves. Summoning their leader, Jasper begged him to take the infant as she belonged in the water anyway. The caster, Neil Triton, and his wife already had six adopted daughters. At the urging of his wife, Neil agreed and took the baby under the waves. With her out of sight, Jasper hoped she would forever be gone from his life.

As the years went on, Jasper continued working by the water and made his way up the ranks until he was given his own ship to captain. He cut off all ties with his father, and when the man died a few years later Jasper didn’t even go to his funeral. He did, however, attend the funeral of his mother. She was never able to move past what Jasper’s father had done, and a few years after the affair was revealed washed up on the beach with stones in her pockets. After her passing, Jasper moved to small houseboat and spent nearly all his time on the water. Taylor and Peter stayed young while Jasper grew up into a strong man with strong opinions. He developed a reputation for having a strong hatred of the supernatural, stemming from both his fathers affair with the siren and Taylor’s betrayal. Soon he became known around town as a bit of a pirate, and his crew seemed to share his hatred of the supernatural. If you weren’t human, it was best to stay away from Hook and his crew. If your name was Peter, it was best for you to run.

Relations with Peter became infamously bad. The Lost Boys and Hook’s crew, the Jolly Roger, continued to meet and clash in violent encounters. One particularly bad instance was when Peter was trying to recruit a boy named Markus Smee. Peter had befriended Markus when he moved to town and had murdered his parents and sister so that he no reason to not join the Lost Boys. Jasper arrived on the scene and fought Peter, but Peter cut off Jasper’s left hand in the scuffle. Peter was eventually fended off and Smee became Jasper’s right hand man. Fastening a hook over his stump, a war was officially declared with Hook and his crew against all supernaturals. Things were dark for a while, and Jasper wouldn’t hesitate to attack and call out supernaturals he saw. There was only one who was safe from his rage, and that was Ariel Triton.

Jasper wanted to hate Ariel, almost as much as he had wanted to leave her to die as an infant. He couldn’t though, and Jasper kept an eye on Ariel as she grew up. It appeared that she was going to be human, but when her siren powers manifested Jasper was disappointed. He didn’t make himself known to her until Ariel realized what she was, and even then it was strange for the two to admit that they were siblings. No one knew that Ariel was his sister, however, so Jasper was able to hide the fact that he was connected to a supernatural. 

And so, Jasper Hook was turned from a lover to fighter. If you see him or his band of ragtag sailors coming, it’s best to move out of the way. With his one hand and his boat he reminds most of an old time pirate, and his suave attitude doesn’t clash with that image. It’s only a matter of time before things grow ugly between him and Peter though, and once they reach a certain point there’s no going back.

✴ PETER BANNING went from the best of friends to the bitterest of enemies; Peter is now the bane of Jasper’s existence. Jasper knows Peter will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and what he wants is nothing good. Does Jasper miss his old friend? At this point, there’s too much blood between them to say. Peter and Jasper are now as diametrically opposed as could be. Peter took Jasper’s hand and Jasper is prepared to take much more from Peter if given the chance.

✴ TAYLOR ‘TINK’ BELL was the love of Jaspers life but she betrayed him when she let Peter turn her. He’s never forgiven her for what she does. It would be too far to say he harbors any affection towards her, but he’s never raised his sword against her. Taylor was one of the few people who loved Jasper when he wasn’t sure if love was real. Between her and his father, he lost his faith in it altogether.

✴ ARIEL TRITON and Jasper are adopted siblings due to the fact that Jasper’s adopted father is Ariel’s biological one. Even though Jasper has a strong hatred of the supernatural, he does have a soft spot for his sister. This may be in part because she was as helpless as he was when they were younger. Ariel was innocent in a way Jasper never got to be. Even though Ariel never knew they were connected, Jasper kept an eye on her. It wasn’t until after she was married and returned to Walt’s Landing that he made their relation known. Sirens are detestable, but Ariel is the only family he has left since his father and mother have died. Everyone now knows that if you touch Ariel you’ll have Hook to answer to.

✴ MARKUS SMEE is Jasper’s right hand man, and he knows that he can always rely on Smee for whatever he needs. Smee may not be the brightest, the strongest or the most cunning of men, but he’s loyal and that’s what Jasper relies on. Saving Smee cost Jasper his hand, but he doesn’t blame him. Smee lost a lot that night as well. They both have reason to hate Peter.

✴ THE JOLLY ROGER GANG – Over the years, Jasper has found like minded people who hate supernaturals or have been wronged by them. They’re known for picking fights and making their voices known whenever they get a chance. With that being said, they know when to fall in line and don’t break the rules that Jasper sets. Some call them pirates, but they don’t care for labels. They just want to rid Walt’s Landing of supernaturals once and for all.

Spending a good amount of his childhood in Montana on his grandparents' ranch, Bob grew up with a fondness for cows, horses, and of course, the cattle dogs and the few mousers around the property. While he gravitated to the cats, quiet enough they'd seek him out whenever he was in the barn, and was always impressed by how smart the cows were, he loved running with the dogs and watching them chase cattle.

He and his sisters always begged their parents for pets (his sisters championed them getting a dog while Bob was perfectly content with a cat), they'd always point out that not only was it impractical for their life but that they got a healthy dose of that life on the ranch - even when Bob was the only who'd continue to spend his summers helping out in Montana.

As an adult, he'd still love to have a cat, but he can't say he disagrees with the impracticality of it when he's gone six months at a time for deployments.

honestly.. the yokai can probably smell when you start your period.

kuya and garu can smell the changes in your hormones so they’ll know before you even start that it’s about to happen. you notice that kuya starts brewing your more soothing tea blends than usual but as always he brushes you off. silly you, always thinking too hard about things.

even if garu doesn’t understand what your change in scent means, both him and yakumo certainly start to panic when they smell blood. yakumo especially goes into mother hen mode, frantically checking you all over to see where you’re injured.

you just have to sit them down and explain to them what’s going on. after that, they’ll focus on doing anything they can to make you more comfortable. yakumo’s dishes, each made with extra love and care, work wonders to make you feel better. he’ll do whatever you ask, like a doting housewife. if you need anything, he’ll get it for you. if you need him to just stay with you, he won’t dream of leaving you. he sort of understands how difficult it can be to go through something like this alone, as he vaguely remembers his brumation periods as a young serpent.

meanwhile karu stands near you the entire week to ‘protect you’. he says the smell of blood can attract enemies, so he’ll keep you safe while you’re recovering from your ‘weakened state’. you’re appreciative of the effort even if he doesn’t quite understand what’s going on.

quincy is warm. he is warm and wonderful to snuggle with and he doesn’t mind laying with you for hours. if anything needs to be taken care of, he’ll do it, but he’s coming right back to your side afterwards. he seems extra reluctant to leave you alone, and he probably is. partially because he doesn’t want you to have to be in pain by yourself, but also because if you’re in bed, he’s in bed. there’s nowhere else he wants to be than by your side.

SF Raph - Have you ever ... felt like you'll never get Splinter back? uwu

When Raphael got tried of April fussing over him, he took off. Not that he could go to far even the fucking sewers, their territory wasn't in the clear to freely travel. So much felt taken away from them right now, Raphael felt as he stared up through at the sewer grate just above his head. Drops of rain water slowly dripped off the metal and landed into the puddle below it was creating. Raphael would love to sneak out to the surface right now. But the streets were over ran with mousers, foot ninjas, frogs and even rats. Just not the rat he wanted to see more than anything. It was one thing to take away his favorite thing to do. Sneak out to the roof tops. Just to run across them under the cover of night where he could freely move and feel the air against his scales.

Raphael could live with not being able to go to the roof tops for a time or the docks even. But did they have to take his dad too?

Raphael couldn't really stand even a minute without Splinter being home. Wearing that dumb apron happily showing off his favorite mug to everyone as if it was the first time they gifted the mug to him. Didn't matter how often Casey and April had seen it.

"No Casey?"

"I aint with him all the fuckin' time." Raphael gruffed in return when he heard Leo speak. The eldest soon took the space next to him giving him a look that clearly said 'really?' Which yeah, that was fair. Raphael and Casey were pretty much glued to the hip since Raphael found Casey in the sewers that first night.

"Didn' really feel 'ike hangin' with him." Leo moved to rest against the wall besides Raphael. A light tap of his elbow against Raphael's own. Had him look down at his feet a moment. "I can' say it round Don. Ya know how hard he's been workin' to figure everythin' out. Or Mikey either I swear if he ain't crackin' jokes how he been he'll break down." Raphael expressed, letting his gaze drift over to Leo.

This wasn't just a talk between brothers, but to his leader. Not something Raph was always good about acknowledging or even showing he saw when it came to Leo. But also as the two oldest of the four. Don and Mikey were the youngest sure they were trying to handle it keep it together as well but they kind of worked in similar ways. 'if I do this everything will be fine.'

"Are we ever gonna see Dad again?" Raphael finally voiced his doubts, "what we gonna do if we can'? Don's bearly holding it togetha' as is. Mikey so out in the clouds and..i'm" Raphael was only holding it together thanks to Casey and having battles to deal with. But, even he wasn't sure how much longer he could do that. "How are we gonna take care of them Leo? If we can't even get Splinter back?" Raph goes on to say it had all been weighing on him more than even he had thought.

"Every time we fight shred head. It get tougher and I think maybe jus' maybe it's finally the time we'll get him." Leo cut in finishing the thought of how they only get a trophy of one of their dad's belongings instead. "Yeah, Von's around now and 'hat helps Don out some. She helps with Mikey even." Leo nodded along sharing the same appreciations and worries.

"I ain't sayin' we wont get Dad back or to even stop tryin'-"

"I know Raph"

"just can't help thinking what we gonna do about them."

Leo just playfully elbowed Raphael "Now you know how I feel"

Raph just turned away ignoring Leo's laugh but still offered a smile none the less.

"They be okay cause they have brothers who worry about them." Leo finally says and it dose ease Raph's thought enough to get him to jab Leo back a little harder than needed but that just how it was.

← ONCE UPON A TIME WAS A LONG TIME AGO →

Bitter are the wars between brothers — even when the brothers are not biological. Brotherhood has both the potential to be affirming and detrimental, and Jasper Hook has experienced both. In the beginning of his life, Jasper was on his own. Left at the Darling Home for Wayward Children, the poor orphan grew up parentless. It was there that he met fellow abandoned child Peter Banning, and the two soon became the closest of friends. Peter and Jasper got into a fair amount of trouble over the summers they spent together as they grew; Peter was the type to always scheme and want more, but Jasper was content to live in the moment. The older they got, the more reckless Peter got. Jasper was concerned but went along with it until they reached a breaking point.

Peter wanted to turn into a vampire. He thought it was a great idea even though they were both under eighteen and it would break the rules. It was at this time that a fisherman and his wife took an interest in adopting Jasper. He had to choose between eternal undead life with his friend or the family he had always wanted. Promising Peter they’d always be friends, Jasper was officially adopted and moved into a tiny house by the sea. Peter was enraged at what he believed to be a betrayal by his friend, and a bitter feud began. While Peter seethed, Jasper settled nicely into his new life. He took an instant liking to being on the sea and his adopted father joked that salt water ran through his veins. While the three of them didn’t have much based on his fathers fisherman income, the new family was happy. Jasper didn’t care much for the school they enrolled him in and would instead spend his days fishing at his fathers side or playing piano with his mother. He was, by all means, a lover rather than a fighter. Jasper believed things in his life were better than before and would continue to be. He was, unfortunately, wrong.

Although he moved out of the Darling Home, Jasper still stopped by to check in with Minerva Mouser. He was young still when he first met a new resident by the name of Taylor Bell. Enthralled by young affection, Jasper thought himself to be in love with her. Jasper drank her presence like air, never able to get enough of Taylor. He imagined himself with her forever until Peter reared his head once more. At this point, he had begun to amass a group of underaged vampires he called the Lost Boys. Peter set his sights on Taylor and Jasper had no idea. Peter whispered in Taylor’s ear, seducing her while spreading lies about Jasper. Jasper wanted to stay far away from Peter, but Taylor fell under his thrall. He was devastated the day she approached him and revealed that she had allowed Peter to turn her. Heartbroken, Jasper rejected Taylor and made it clear she never wanted to see her again. A strong dislike of the supernatural subsequently began to grow in his heart.

Heartbreak aside, Jasper continued to grow. He was sleeping one night when the sound of singing awoke him. A haunting melody floated along with the roar of the waves, and when the young man stumbled outside he saw a beautiful woman laying on the rocks. The woman wasn’t alone, however, and laying beside her was Jasper’s father. At first, he couldn’t believe it. His father loved his mother. What was he doing with this strange songstress? The longer he watched the two of them, however, the more Jasper realized that his father was unfaithful. In the morning he was greeted as if nothing had occurred, and his father smiled and kissed his wife as if he hadn’t been with another woman only hours before.

For weeks, Jasper wrestled with what he wanted to do. Did he tell his mother and break her heart? Or did he let his father get away with the wrong he had done to their family? Jasper stopped accompanying his father out on fishing trips as he mused over what was the right action. Finally, Jasper decided that he would tell his mother what he had witnessed. It turned out that he was too late, however, as Jasper’s father beat him to it. The woman that Jasper’s father had been with was a siren, a beautiful and alluring creature of the sea who were fabled to have lived around Walt’s Landing although no one ever saw them. She was one of the last of her kind, and she was with child. Specifically, she was with the child of Jasper’s father.

Everything changed in the Hook household. Jasper was at the age where he’d move out and live on his own, but he didn’t want to leave his mother as she dealt with heartbreak. It was because of this that he and his mother moved to a small apartment away from the water while the siren moved in with Jasper’s father for the duration of her pregnancy. Jasper did his best to stay away from the house as he wanted nothing to do with his father nor the siren, and a deep hatred for the supernatural continued to grow. He was forced to watch his mother all but shut down as depression ate away at her, and soon he had to take a job as a dock boy to try and pay for their expenses as she had stopped going to work. Despite his reluctance to step foot near his father, Jasper was awakened one night by a terrible storm and felt himself drawn to the water. There was a horrible but beautiful sound filling the air, and as he approached the shore he realized it was coming from his fathers home.

Inside, the siren was finally giving birth. Jasper found himself unable to leave as a small baby girl was born, a girl who was his adopted sister. Jasper assisted his father in wrapping the newborn up, and no sooner than they had done so they realized something. The siren was gone. True to her siren nature, she had turned and slipped back into the sea as sirens rarely ever raised their own children. Jasper’s father was horrified and panic filled. He was unable to accept the fact that he’d have to raise a supernatural baby on his own after already going through the shame of having an affair with a siren. Seeing no other choice, Jasper’s father waded into the surf and left the baby to die. 

Jasper wanted the baby gone. He really did. It was his sister, yes, but her mother had ruined his life. Hearing it’s pealing cries, however, Jasper found he was unable to let her drown and rescued the child from the waves. Knowing that he couldn’t bring it home and break his mothers heart further, Jasper made a rash choice. He had heard rumors of a caster coven who had retreated below the waves. Summoning their leader, Jasper begged him to take the infant as she belonged in the water anyway. The caster, Neil Triton, and his wife already had six adopted daughters. At the urging of his wife, Neil agreed and took the baby under the waves. With her out of sight, Jasper hoped she would forever be gone from his life.

As the years went on, Jasper continued working by the water and made his way up the ranks until he was given his own ship to captain. He cut off all ties with his father, and when the man died a few years later Jasper didn’t even go to his funeral. He did, however, attend the funeral of his mother. She was never able to move past what Jasper’s father had done, and a few years after the affair was revealed washed up on the beach with stones in her pockets. After her passing, Jasper moved to small houseboat and spent nearly all his time on the water. Taylor and Peter stayed young while Jasper grew up into a strong man with strong opinions. He developed a reputation for having a strong hatred of the supernatural, stemming from both his fathers affair with the siren and Taylor’s betrayal. Soon he became known around town as a bit of a pirate, and his crew seemed to share his hatred of the supernatural. If you weren’t human, it was best to stay away from Hook and his crew. If your name was Peter, it was best for you to run.

Relations with Peter became infamously bad. The Lost Boys and Hook’s crew, the Jolly Roger, continued to meet and clash in violent encounters. One particularly bad instance was when Peter was trying to recruit a boy named Markus Smee. Peter had befriended Markus when he moved to town and had murdered his parents and sister so that he no reason to not join the Lost Boys. Jasper arrived on the scene and fought Peter, but Peter cut off Jasper’s left hand in the scuffle. Peter was eventually fended off and Smee became Jasper’s right hand man. Fastening a hook over his stump, a war was officially declared with Hook and his crew against all supernaturals. Things were dark for a while, and Jasper wouldn’t hesitate to attack and call out supernaturals he saw. There was only one who was safe from his rage, and that was Ariel Triton.

Jasper wanted to hate Ariel, almost as much as he had wanted to leave her to die as an infant. He couldn’t though, and Jasper kept an eye on Ariel as she grew up. It appeared that she was going to be human, but when her siren powers manifested Jasper was disappointed. He didn’t make himself known to her until Ariel realized what she was, and even then it was strange for the two to admit that they were siblings. No one knew that Ariel was his sister, however, so Jasper was able to hide the fact that he was connected to a supernatural. 

And so, Jasper Hook was turned from a lover to fighter. If you see him or his band of ragtag sailors coming, it’s best to move out of the way. With his one hand and his boat he reminds most of an old time pirate, and his suave attitude doesn’t clash with that image. It’s only a matter of time before things grow ugly between him and Peter though, and once they reach a certain point there’s no going back.

✴ PETER BANNING went from the best of friends to the bitterest of enemies; Peter is now the bane of Jasper’s existence. Jasper knows Peter will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and what he wants is nothing good. Does Jasper miss his old friend? At this point, there’s too much blood between them to say. Peter and Jasper are now as diametrically opposed as could be. Peter took Jasper’s hand and Jasper is prepared to take much more from Peter if given the chance. ✴ TAYLOR ‘TINK’ BELL was the love of Jaspers life but she betrayed him when she let Peter turn her. He’s never forgiven her for what she does. It would be too far to say he harbors any affection towards her, but he’s never raised his sword against her. Taylor was one of the few people who loved Jasper when he wasn’t sure if love was real. Between her and his father, he lost his faith in it altogether. ✴ ARIEL TRITON and Jasper are adopted siblings due to the fact that Jasper’s adopted father is Ariel’s biological one. Even though Jasper has a strong hatred of the supernatural, he does have a soft spot for his sister. This may be in part because she was as helpless as he was when they were younger. Ariel was innocent in a way Jasper never got to be. Even though Ariel never knew they were connected, Jasper kept an eye on her. It wasn’t until after she was married and returned to Walt’s Landing that he made their relation known. Sirens are detestable, but Ariel is the only family he has left since his father and mother have died. Everyone now knows that if you touch Ariel you’ll have Hook to answer to. ✴ MARKUS SMEE is Jasper’s right hand man, and he knows that he can always rely on Smee for whatever he needs. Smee may not be the brightest, the strongest or the most cunning of men, but he’s loyal and that’s what Jasper relies on. Saving Smee cost Jasper his hand, but he doesn’t blame him. Smee lost a lot that night as well. They both have reason to hate Peter.
