Restaurants say governor should have found compromise on dining ban

Restaurant owners said they were disappointed but not surprised by Monday's announcement from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer extending the ban on indoor dining in Michigan. Some restauranteurs, along with the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association, knocked the governor for not working with them on a compromise that would have allowed them to offer some degree of indoor dining during one of their traditionally busiest months."We firmly believe there is a better approach - one followed by 45 other states - that doesn't use blunt force closure of a single industry to resolve a shared crisis," MRLA President and CEO Justin Winslow said in a statement. "We maintain that a more nuanced approach that allows for limited indoor capacity with a curfew will result in greater compliance, better health outcomes and substantially reduced economic fallout."He noted that restaurants have been closed 118 days this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We already know the impact of another extended shutdown will be significant, as the industry lost over $8 billion in sales and laid off more than 75% of its workforce when it was shuttered for an extended period in the spring," Winslow said in the statement. "The restaurant industry is comprised of creative and resilient individuals, but for a growing number of them, this latest pause is the cause of their lost livelihood and well-being."More: Michigan COVID-19 restrictions extended 12 daysMore: Michigan passes 400,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, reports 93 new deathsUnder Monday's announcement, the original "three-week pause," which was to expire Tuesday, is now extended through Dec. 20. Whitmer said the additional 12 days is needed "to determine the full impact of the Thanksgiving holiday on our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus."She also cited alarming increases in daily cases and deaths. On Monday, the statereported Michigan had passed 400,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, with nearly 10,000 deaths."This may be the most difficult time yet in our struggle with COVID-19, but there is light at the end of the tunnel," Whitmer said.The order limiting restaurants to outdoor dining, to-go and delivery service was to expire Tuesday. Those limits remain in place. Patti Eisenbraun, co-owner of Brown Iron Brewhouse in Royal Oak, said she is frustrated with the orders, which have been a big blow to restaurant operations."It's difficult because the summer months and December is when restaurants make their money," Eisenbraun said.Eisenbraun has two locations, one in Royal Oak, which opened about two weeks before the pandemic hit Michigan, and one in Washington Township. Both will make it, she said, but the closing of dining rooms hurts."Never in a million years would I thought we'd go from 140 employees to roughly 25," she said. "But I'm confident we will make it through."While Sam Khashan, owner of Sean O'Callaghan's in Plymouth, feels the same frustrations, he said he recently had COVID-19 and understands the severity of the pandemic.But he thinks there are more logical ways to go about handling it and keeping some business in restaurants."In my mind (we need) some sort of compromise to keep restaurants open," Khashan said, suggesting an 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. curfew. "It's the late night when the masks are coming off in the younger crowd."Other possibilities, he said, were going from the 50% capacity allowed during the summer to 30% and shutting down the bar seats, with table service only."I think if you combine all those factors ... I think at least we could capture a little bit of sales and still abide by all the CDC and pandemic guidelines," Khashan said.What's difficult for Khashan and many others in the restaurant industry is seeing people on treadmills...
