tw: brief mentions of miscarriage and suicide attempt
the dichotomy of the level of stakes in each episode of Downton Abbey will always be funny to me. Some episodes are like
“Thomas is on the brink of being fired for being gay”
“it’s the actual World War I”
“Sybil could very well die in childbirth”
“Bates has been arrested for a murder he didn’t commit”
“one of the staff caused a MISCARRIAGE of someone from Upstairs”
“Thomas has been found half dead in a self-inflicted bloody bathtub”
And then other episodes are like
“Will Carson let the staff go to the town fair”
“who will win the flower competition”
“The cooks dropped the chicken on the floor”
“Sybil is wearing pants”
“Branson is still fraternizing with the Downstairs”
#The stakes of Downton Abbey#Makes me laugh when I think about it#‘Cause you know you’re just as invested at the flower competition as you are at the war#Downton abbey#thomas barrow#sybil crawley#mr carson#tom branson#mr bates

I'm reading character rankings and Downton Abbey and apparently we are supposed to be annoyed at Branson when he shows up for....being right about class issues? Being a socialist? Annoying the Crawleys by making them think about the ethics of their money? Like seriously what am I missing here?
Multiple articles talk about him like he only became a good guy once he shut up and became one with the Crawley Aristocrat Horde but honestly I found him kind of boring when he didn't have a love interest. And speaking of, when he did have a love interest---the way poor Sarah was talked about jfc. When she showed up I was like "okay great I love her and her finally calling him on losing his socialist principles once the palace doors were opened to him, she's going to bring him back to his morals" but instead she was thrown out and treated like the absolute devil incarnate and all the protagonists joked about how obviously evil she was because as Mrs. Hughes said "heaven forbid we contradict the holy Family."
#i thought the whole point was that he was pretty much right#like his first cause is literally “women deserve the vote”#and he gets Sybil into politics which is a good thing and treated as such in the narrative#and he's against the filthy amount of wealth these people have but doesn't want to see their homes burnt in front of their kids#like he's a reasonable guy who just understands the scale of the inequality#one of my favorite moments of him is when he goes downstairs after announcing he and Sybil are engaged#and Mr. Carson asks “HAVE YOU NO SHAME???” because this is literally the worst thing a servant could do in his mind#seduce a daughter of The Family#and Branson looks at him and is like “No I have no shame” because seriously why not they are two consenting adults#and everyone is like O.O “....are we allowed to do that...no one told us we were allowed to do that....”#I guess that might be why people get annoyed at him#because the articles talk about how he acts “superior”#but he doesn't act any more superior than The Family#So in a show that does frame The Family as inherently worthy of their money through divine right I guess#having This Guy act just as entitled to Thoughts might be jarring#anyway I am an early season Branson fan#and a Sarah stan#she is probably the most underrated character#the sheer amount of confidence it takes as a working class woman to argue with an earl in his own house while he has higher ranked guests#anyway I don't get the early dislike for him#like it's one thing from english tv writers who i get being weirdly nostalgic for ye olden times#but like the articles surprise me#tom branson#downton abbey#sarah bunting

I'm realizing only now I never finished watching S6 of Downton Abbey 😱
A few notes/questions:
-When Tom came back from America to be the agent again, did he realize he was going to have to manage Mary / hold the family together?
-The car crash with everyone running to help. I was IMPRESSED at Cora's grip on Robert 😂 "You're not going anywhere". I don't know if it was said grip, or the clenched teeth but I could hear the "Yes dear" in his gaze 😂😂
-Never thought I'd actually end up liking Thomas Barrow but here we are
-Cora's so upset at Violet's cold shoulder. Our girl has worked for something like 30 years at this relationship, and here we are, poor thing.
-I want to be mad at Violet but *sobs* 😭 and also who can stay mad at a character that delivers line like "Your feelings do you credit my dear but you must never let tenderness be a barrier to a bit of snooping". And "Don't be mysterious, it's the last resort of people with no secrets" 😂😂😂😂
-okayyyyy I've excused Mary Crawley's behaviour in the past because her eyerolls are brilliant honestly. But Edith and Tom have a point. It's not cute anymore, hasn't been for a long time. Lucky she took great care of Anna. (And thankfully the Bateses are okay dear lord).
-The family going to Mrs Patmore's 'place of illrepute' 😂😂 they laugh but they support her ❤️ (for all the times Mrs Hughes or Daisy comment on how the downstairs people live through the family, the family gets so heavily involved with downstairs just as much 😂

I absolutely believe Rose visited Tom in Boston at least once before he moved back to England.
#rose aldrige#rose macclare#tom branson#downton abbey#Other than maybe the Levinson's Tom was Rose's only family on the same continent!#and yeah Tom had family in Boston but he didn't exactly know them#also Rose and Mrs Levinson also stayed in contact I refuse to believe otherwise#they were literally in the same city

Hello Mrs. Brandon,
What is your opinion of Mr. Sun & Mr. Moon? Have they been good tenants? Do you have any stories about them worth sharing? That's not too personal, of course.
a message from Mrs. Branson:
"Sunny-dearie and Moon-dearie are very sweet boys! They always check up on me and make sure I am okay, but my ticker's still going strong! They are very punctual with paying rent, always on time at the exact amount. But they get a little rowdy when watching a family's children, so they need a reminder every now and then."
"Some stories? Oh, I have plenty! Once I had met Sun when he was small in his head--oh, Moon-dearie told me about all that--but when he was small in his head he saw me and called me 'Branma'! It was the sweetest thing!"

Rewatching the first ep of downton abbey before I start the final season and there was soooo much that I missed. The little seeds planets so early on between Anna and Mr. Bates. The great introduction to literally every person but specifically everyone upstairs and also a great introduction into all of the important relationships and the main plots.
Like I’m sure that none of this is new information but it’s just all stuff that I spotted just like half way through the episode.

The Downton Abbey Empathy Challenge
"The Little Book of Lykke: The Danish Search for the World's Happiest People" (alternately subtitled "Secrets of the World's Happiest People") offers up the following challenge for strengthening your empathy muscles:
Watch your child's favourite movie, only with the sound turned off. Pay attention to the emotions on the character's faces and discuss why they might feel like that.
This reminded me of my old analysis of the breakfast scene in DA S6, E8 where I stopped and actually looked at what was going on with all of the characters - particularly Mary - and attempted to do some real worl analysis of what was going on. Needless to say, this wasn't popular - in fact all but two of the comments were people telling me exactly where my basic intelligence and observational skills fell blatantly short - and I eventually deleted it because I got tired of coming home from a long day of work and blocking people. However, there was one of the early responses that really stuck in my head and comes out now. It read "The look on Mary's face says everything."
…
The look on Mary's face says everything.
I don't think that statement is actually wrong. However, one character does not make up a story. I think in order to understand what Mary's face is saying, we need to look at the other faces in the room. All of them. And I don't think we can pick just one key moment to say what the faces are telling us. I think we need to watch the whole scene.
So, since empathy and the need for empathy is something I hear about a lot lately, but only really see demonstrated toward certain, popular, PC groups, I propose an empathy challenge. It's multi part, but you don't need to do all of the parts if you don't want to. Do the ones you have time for, just remember - the point is to build empathy, not confirm bias. If you're doing these just to prove to yourself that the characters you like are Good and Nice and the ones you don't like are Bad and Nasty, you're doing it wrong.
Ready?
Here goes.
Part One: Watch the breakfast scene from S6 E8 with the sound off. Pay attention to the characters' faces. All of them. Even Robert, even though he's there for under a full minute. As objectively as possible, try to determine what the characters are feeling and why. If you have difficulty doing this as an objective exercise, repeat it a time or two. Part Two: Watch an entire episode with the sound off. Pay attention to all of the characters' faces, but pay closer attention to the characters you don't like than the ones you do. Again, as objectively as possible, figure out what they are feeling and why they are feeling it. Part Three - Extra Credit for Writers: Try to write something sympathetic from the PoV of a character you don't like. A drabble, a scene, a novel, length doesn't matter, just really try to get into their head and try to understand them.
And remember - empathy is more than thinking about how you would feel if you were in the same situation as a character, because you are not actually that character, and therefore you wouldn't feel the same. You have to take into account who they are, to understand how they work, and why. It takes effort, and the less you have in common, the more effort it takes.
