Rubberhose party. I wanted to take a picture like this for a long time, I finally did it. Yeah, there are some photobombs, dinosaur blanket, yellow drink, blue cloud, Princess Bubblegum and a cactus. But I think they added to the charm a bit.

Life at home isn't great either, since her father bosses her and her mother around. Then along comes Ms. Finney, an English teacher who'll try anything in the classroom and actually treats kids like human beings. Now that she's found a teacher who sees Marcy as more than a name on an attendance sheet, Marcy realizes her life could mean something. When Ms. Finney is suspended, Marcy knows she's got to take a stand. But is this new independence worth the price she'll pay at school and at home?
Magic Shop by Bruce Coville

The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart
Fourteen-year-old Quint Verginix is the only remaining son of famous sky-pirate Wind Jackal. He and his father have journeyed to the city of Sanctaphrax – a great floating rock, bound to the ground below by a chain, its inhabitants living with their heads literally in the clouds.
But the city hides a dangerous secret: deep inside the great rock, something horrible lurks. With his father away, Quint may be the only one who can save Sanctaphrax from the dreaded curse of the gloamglozer . . .
School of Fear by Gitty Daneshvari
Everyone is afraid of something...
Madeleine Masterson is deathly afraid of bugs, especially spiders.
Theodore Bartholomew is petrified of dying.
Lulu Punchalower is scared of confined spaces.
Garrison Feldman is terrified of deep water.
With very few options left, the parents of these four twelve year-olds send them to the highly elusive and exclusive School of Fear to help them overcome their phobias. But when their peculiar teacher, Mrs. Wellington, and her unconventional teaching methods turn out to be more frightening than even their fears, the foursome realize that this just may be the scariest summer of their lives.
Pillage by Obert Skye
Upon his mother's death, fifteen-year-old Beck Phillips is sent to live with an eccentric uncle he had never met in a remote manor house, where he learns that his family suffers from a curse that allows him to make plants grow on command and dragon eggs hatch.
The Blackwell Pages by K. L. Armstrong
In Viking times, Norse myths predicted the end of the world, an event called Ragnarok, that only the gods can stop. When this apocalypse happens, the gods must battle the monsters--wolves the size of the sun, serpents that span the seabeds, all bent on destroying the world.
The gods died a long time ago.
Matt Thorsen knows every Norse myth, saga, and god as if it was family history--because it is family history. Most people in the modern-day town of Blackwell, South Dakota, in fact, are direct descendants of either Thor or Loki, including Matt's classmates Fen and Laurie Brekke.
However, knowing the legends and completely believing them are two different things. When the rune readers reveal that Ragnarok is coming and kids--led by Matt--will stand in for the gods in the final battle, he can hardly believe it. Matt, Laurie, and Fen's lives will never be the same as they race to put together an unstoppable team to prevent the end of the world.
The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson
Annika is happy living in the servants' quarters of a house owned by three eccentric professors. She adores Ellie and Sigrid, the cook and housemaid who found her as a baby, abandoned on a church doorstep. In the eleven years since, they have taught her how to bake and clean to perfection. Then one day a glamorous stranger arrives, claiming to be Annika's mother. Annika is no servant, she learns, but an aristocrat whose true home is an ancient castle. But at crumbling Spittal, Annika discovers that all is not as it seems in the lives of her newfound family. . .
The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit
Jerry, Jimmy, and Cathy stumble upon a mysterious castle with a beautiful princess asleep in the garden. The princess is really Mabel, the housekeeper's niece, who is only pretending to be royalty. But when she shows them a secret room filled with treasure where they discover a magical ring, enchantment becomes a reality.
Fairy Oak by Elizabetta Gnone
Fairy Oak is the name of a village that grew up in the shade of a talking oak tree, an imaginary place, lost in the mists of time immemorial, overlooking a stormy sea, next to uplands covered in snow in winter, surrounded by enchanted woods, vast meadows, crystal clear rivers and lakes. A healthy and uncontaminated nature, which dominates and envelops the worlds in which the stories unfold. Within the walls of the old village there lives an equally old community, a mixed bag of funny characters, with the rituals, customs, habits and familiarity of a serene, cheerful, lively people. The books chronicle the adventures of the adolescent twins Vanilla and Lavender. To save their people, menaced by a cruel enemy, they go on a long journey deep into the labyrinths of their powers. Since the girls are very young, at first lots of things go wrong. Some are frightening. In short, it’s not going to be easy at all! But someone and something will help them.

two part question for you!
how much of the who’s solo discography have you listened to so far? and do you intend on completing everything eventually?
ALSO what do you think of keith’s solo album? 👀 it’s been a while since i’ve listened to it and i’ve been meaning to re-visit it again. i love his version of “the kids are alright” 🥰
The amount of The Who solo discography so far is:
As Long As I Have You by Roger Daltrey
Two Sides of The Moon by Keith Moon
Roger Daltrey by Roger Daltrey
I don't know about the completion thingy, I usually go for the solo careers of the band members I like the most (same is with The Beatles, I'm sticking mostly to Paul's and Ringo's solo stuff, but at the same time if I hear something good by George or John I happily listen to it, heck, I have "Brainwashed" by George Harrison at home and I would be happy to get "Cloud Nine" as well) so it all depends if I hear something by Pete or John and like it.
My thoughts about Keith's solo album? Simple: hidden gem. It could be done better if it comes to recording, Keith's vocals are too quiet sometimes, there could be less backing vocals sometimes and less strings, but overall, I can die for this album. It's also that one special album that costs insane amount of money and I'll be lucky if I get it for normal prize - I'm not paying 90 zloties or 250 zloties for an album that is 25 minutes long, I'm not that mad.
"The Kids Are Alright" version on "Two Sides of The Moon" is very good, even superior if it comes to drumming from the original, BUT I do have my favourites on this one and they would be:
"Solid Gold" - pure fun, the ending kills me each time, try to guess why 😆
"Don't Worry Baby" - wouldn't be my favourite if I didn't know how much this song meant to him. Also his vocals here are so freaking soft!
"Move Over Ms L" - this one is fun!
"In My Life - my number one favourite. Soft, slow, BETTER THAN ORIGINAL IN EVERY WAY and the way he sings "In my life I love you more"... First time I heard it - I was laying in my bed, chilling - I literally fucking cried. I love the original as it is, but his version? It does reflect my feelings to him, because as weird as it sounds I feel connected to him and since I don't have anyone to love as much, I give him all my loving, but it also works in another way when I think about my self-shipping, especially after the time he's sober and clean (this shipping is very complex, would take me hours to talk about it).
So please, re-listen to it, you won't regret it 💜

Sara Rivers Cofield was on her usual search for interesting period clothing about a decade ago when she noticed what appeared to be a “textbook” silk bustle dress from the 1800s at an antique mall in Maine.
The bronze-colored dress was in good condition, with a draped skirt, puffy bustle, and metal buttons that appeared to depict a Shakespearean motif. Ms. Rivers Cofield, an archaeologist, bought it for $100. Little did she know that the garment also contained a mystery: A secret pocket with a cryptic note.
Part of the message, written on two, scrunched-up translucent sheets of paper, read: “Bismark Omit leafage buck bank / Paul Ramify loamy event false new event.”
Ms. Rivers Cofield was baffled. Was it a writing exercise? A list? A code? “What the…?,” she wrote on her blog in 2014. “I’m putting it up here in case there’s some decoding prodigy out there looking for a project.”
Wayne Chan, a data analyst at the University of Manitoba, finally cracked the case. The note, he wrote in a recent study, contained codes used to telegraph condensed weather observations for stations in the United States and Canada in 1888. Each message started with a station location, followed by code words for temperature and pressure, dew point, precipitation and wind direction, cloud observations, wind velocity and sunset observations, Mr. Chan wrote.
“For the first time in history, observations from distant locations could be rapidly disseminated, collated, and analyzed to provide a synopsis of the state of weather across an entire nation,” he added. Those observations, however, needed to be condensed — just like other telegrams — into codes.
Mr. Chan’s findings brought resolve to a community of online sleuths who for years had speculated whether the owner of the dress was a spy, a romantic sending coded love notes, or a risk-taker engaged in illegal gambling. One cryptologist declared it among the “top 50 unsolved encrypted messages”; another wrote that even the most “voracious code-breaking teeth” had been unable to decipher the messages, which came to be known as the “Silk Dress cryptogram.”
Mr. Chan, the analyst, said in an interview that he first worked on the code in the summer of 2018, but gave up after a few months without getting anywhere. At the end of 2022, he revisited it, poring over some 170 telegraphic code books in an attempt to find the answer, to no avail. Another book, with a section detailing signals used by the U.S. Army Signal Corps, seemed to contain examples similar to the note found in the dress. After further research, he was finally able to decode it.
And, lo and behold, it was a weather report.
“When I first thought I cracked it, I did feel really excited,” Mr. Chan said, noting that it took a while to build enough evidence to confirm his theory was correct. “It is probably one of the most complex telegraphic codes that I’ve ever seen,” he said.
For example, “Bismark Omit leafage buck bank,” indicated the reading was taken at Bismarck station, in the Dakota Territory. “Omit” was for an air temperature of 56 degrees and pressure of 0.08 inches of mercury, though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said the true reading could have been higher. “Leafage” for a dew point of 32 degrees, observed at 10 p.m. “Buck,” clear weather, with no precipitation and a northerly wind. “Bank,” a wind velocity of 12 miles per hour, and a clear sunset.
Old maps helped Mr. Chan figure out the exact date of the observations: May 27, 1888.
Some mysteries surrounding the dress, however, remain — including who owned it, and why she would have had weather codes stuffed in a secret pocket.
“It’s tantalizing,” said Ms. Rivers Cofield, who found the dress, noting that a name, “Bennet,” was written on a paper tag stitched into the garment.
“Presumably, whoever did that is the last person who owned the dress, and presumably, the last person who owned the dress,” she added, “put the code in the pocket.”

Talking with Can of Clouds
It is not too often that I get the opportunity to interview a new music group that features someone who was a member of one of my top 3 favorite music groups of all time. WA's Can of Clouds consists Justine Jeanotte and Chad Channing. If Channing's name doesn't ring a bell his music will. He was the drummer for Nirvana from 1988 to 1990, playing on the band's debut Bleach. He parted ways with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic after a Spring 1990 tour, but he did some awesome recordings and shows (including Nirvana's shows in Boston in 1989 and two in 1990). The band blew up with fifth drummer Dave Grohl, but in the years that followed much of Channing's recordings were released on compilations and box sets. In addition to Nirvana, Channing has also played in Tic Dolly Row (pre-Nirvana but their demo was re-issued more recently), Fire Ants, The Methodists, Before Cars and Benkyo. Prior to this interview, I had some brief interactions with him on social media, including when I wrote my open letter to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame urging them to induct Channing with Nirvana's induction in 2014. (NOTE: This marks the second member of Nirvana I have been lucky enough to interview after Dale Crover in 2017).
Justine Jeanotte is a violinist and keyboardist who played in Channing's band Before Cars. The two came together as an electronic / acoustic duo Can of Clouds. The group just released their first album Passing Vistas, which was recently released on digital and CD. The vinyl is expected to be out in time for their record release party on May 24 at The Rabbit Box in Seattle, WA. I recently got to catch up with both Mr. Channing and Ms. Jeanotte via zoom.
Channing and Jeanotte among the clouds
Me: So both of you played together in Before Cars. Tell me about your musical chemistry in that band?
Chad: Well Before Cars started as an idea. I've always been a songwriter, so I wanted to get some ideas out that I had. So I was like, well I'd like to get more people together on this. So I talked to my friends Paul [Burback] and Andy [Miller] to ask if they could help me out. We went to this place the Meatlocker and recorded three or four songs. Paul was like "what about getting some violin on it?" and that's where Justine comes in the picture.
Justine: I played on a few songs I think on the first album [Walk Back]. And then there's more violins on the second album How We Run. Then we started playing live. Just little tours, mostly Europe. I don't think we ever toured the U.S. with Before Cars.
Chad: But yeah, we've known each other since 2000. I've always been aware that she's a violinist and whatnot. So I thought it'd be so cool to integrate that. So much of my influence is a lot of 70s singer / songwriter kind of stuff. Carly Simon to Jim Croce, just stuff like that. There's a lot of strings that weave in and out of 70s songwriter stuff. So anyways, I wanted to put that in.
Jeanette (second from right) and Channing (far right) in Before Cars
Me: So you had known each other a long time and played in that band. How did Can of Clouds come about?
Chad: Well, Can of Clouds was a little electronic project that I had. Me sitting in front of GarageBand and using a mini-keyboard and putting stuff together. This was back around 2009. I made a record that I just never released. It just sort of sat there. Then, was it last year?
Justine: I think we were in the car. It always shows up on the screen what's playing. And we were trying to think of band names for Can of Clouds. I didn't even realize that this Can of Clouds that came up was Chad's project. So I was like "Can of Clouds, that's kind of a cool name". Then I realized that was his project that he had done a few things with, so we decided to take that name. We did use a few of those songs and added to them, but then we also did a bunch of new stuff. Some parts we took Chad's parts out and put the violins in instead. Then I added harmony parts to some of the melodies.
Chad: It was pretty funny, because I just assumed that she knew what the songs were from that project, because I played it for Paul and Andy and friends back then. So when she brought up that Can of Clouds would be a cool name, I was like "yeah that's just the name I had for this project" and she was like "wait, that's you?". So it was kind of something old that we brought back to life but made it our own.
Justine: And we had talked about doing a project together, maybe around 2019. We had talked about this for several years. People would ask and we'd be like "oh yeah we're going to do this project" and I began to think, are we ever going to actually do this thing? Then just last year I had this craving to do something. And then we said yes to a show and we only had three songs. So that kind of gave us the kick in the butt to get going.
Chad: That's what kind of catapulted us to get things going. A friend of mine had contacted me that they were going to be doing a OK Hotel reunion show, OK Hotel being the infamous hotel in Seattle where a lot of bands played in the grunge days. The owners of it, when they moved they owned other clubs and one of them was called The Royal Room and they were having a big get together show. So they asked if I wanted to play it. I looked at Justine and said "we only have three songs!?!"
Justine: I was in the background just saying, "say yes" let's get it done.
Chad: Yeah, so I said yes and got to work writing more songs so we could at least have enough to fill out thirty minutes. Kind of crazy!
Me: With this album, Chad, there's more of an electronic element than your previous bands. What was that like for you exploring that musically?
Chad: Well, stuff like EDM and stuff like that was slowly seeping in, aside from the music I was into. I think, one day back in '08 or '09, I was listening to Pandora and I don't know what station I configured for myself, but a band came on the radio I had never heard before that really intrigued me. The band was called Boards of Canada. That later lead to another band called Tycho. They mixed a lot of electronic stuff with a lot of acoustic stuff. A lot of acoustic guitars with a lot of electronic beats going on. I really got into that and I really started getting into more types of EDM music, the atmospheric mixed with dance music. That really intrigued me. So I really wanted to start implementing that into my songwriting. That's what got me going with the whole Can of Clouds thing to begin with. That was my first effort into working that way. So I said, how am I going to do this? I didn't really have a synthesizer at the time. Well, I thought I'd just take a mini-keyboard and work with GarageBand. So it was just playing drum beats onto the keyboard like that and then there's pre-made beats too. I started mixing and matching different things and that's really where it all started. I really got into that and I've been head-on into it ever since.
Justine: You also did the project with Tony[Dattilo].
Chad: Yes, that's true.
Justine: There was a project before this that was with another friend that was just keyboards or just synthesizers.
Chad: It was called Benkyo. We were originally going to call ourselves The Brobots, but then that was already taken. He did this movie production that he just does himself and he calls them Benkyo and he just took that as the name. So me and Tony actually got together every Tuesday for a while, started writing stuff and put the electronic record together. Yeah, I almost forgot about that. So that was a lot of fun! So I guess this is the second or third electronic music that I've been working with. But this has a lot more acoustic music implemented to it.
Me: Justine, there's been a lot of rock-oriented music that has incorporated violins into it for a long time now. Do you see that as a challenge to bring that into rock or is it kind of seamless to just meld into the music with violins?
Justine: No, it's definitely seamless. It's definitely getting more popular, it seems like it. Every day, you hear more string quartets in rock music, it's becoming pretty popular at the moment. I think for me, I'm not much of a composer, but this is the first project in which I've written most of my parts myself. So for me, that's been kind of fun just to branch out. I'm originally a classical violinist, I'm classically trained. I read most of the music, with things put in front of me. So that's a challenge for me to have to write my own parts, but this is the first project where it felt pretty natural to do it. So, I enjoy it. I think it adds a lot to the music and I've been told that when we had violins in Before Cars people really loved it when the violins come out.
Chad: What's really cool is I always try to offer to people to write what you want to put into it. Like the song "Moonglade", that's all her. I was like "what do you want to do with this?" and she just took off running with it.
Justine: Well, I started that one on keyboard. Then we actually transferred it into more of a violin. We started adding guitar at first and then we started doing this project and added the synthesizers underneath. For a while I was like "Chad, you can do more with it. Make it louder" and he was like "I like it simpler" so he just did that simple stuff.
Passing Vistas album cover
Me: With this album Passing Vistas you worked with Jack Endino, who you had worked with on Nirvana's Bleach and Before Cars' Walk Back. What was it like to reunite with him?
Chad: It was funny because we had a show down south near the Columbia River and Jack came to the show and watched us. By this point the album had already been recorded and we just needed it mastered. And at the end of the show I was talking to Jack and said we were looking to get it mastered now and mentioned some people we were going to do it with. He said "they're pretty good" but then he leaned over and whispered "but I'm cheaper". [laughs] So I'm like, "that sounds good to me Jack". I mean, I have worked with him a lot in the past in my previous bands not just Nirvana and Before Cars, but Fire Ants as well. He's a great friend and I've always trust the work that he does and always liked everything that I've done with him. So it was nice to get the chance to work with him. I mean I'm used to him in the studio every day mixing and stuff, but even mastering it was fun to reconnect in that way, via email going back and forth and stuff. The fact that there was an opportunity for him to be a part of this record is really cool! He was really looking forward to the idea of it and stuff. And when you have someone that's excited about your project, that's kind of where I want to go with.
Justine: The first show that we played, he was actually on that bill. He played with his band, so he got to see our first show.
Me: So you've been playing some shows around Washington. Could there be a possibility of a tour outside of the Pacific Northwest? Boston perhaps?
Justine: We actually would love to. We've been brainstorming, when could we go. It's definitely on our mind.
Chad: I think at this point, we're also just trying to get some stuff out to radio stations and stuff. See what kind of reaction we can get, getting the feelers out there. These days, you definitely need a lot of support behind going out on the road. It's a little difficult to just pack up and call a club and ask "can we play your club". A lot more work is involved than it used to be. But that's what we're doing, just trying to garner more attention and get to a point where we can call a particular club in Boston. But that is something that's on our mind that we definitely want to do.
Krist Novoselic, Kurt Cobain and Channing in Nirvana circa 1988
Novoselic and Channing in Oct. 2024
Me: Just a few months ago, Chad's old bandmate Krist Novoselic posted some photos and videos when you were playing a show close to his neck of the woods. I was just curious if you had stayed in touch with him, or Nirvana's rhythm guitarist Jason Everman for that matter, in recent years?
Chad: It's funny you mention being in Krist's neck of the woods. He was actually also at that show that Jack [Endino] was at.
Me: Wow - you, Krist and Jack were all at one show?!
Chad: Yeah, some old school players all sitting at the same table and stuff. I don't see Krist that often, but he's everywhere. He has his band but he's very politically active. But yeah, he lives there and works with a grange. Anyways, it was really cool seeing him. But it's kind of rare, we don't run into each other that often.
Justine: We do hang out with Jason!
Chad: Yeah. I mean he's everywhere all the time. We stay in contact and WhatsApp and stuff. When he's in town, he'll reach out and we get together.
Dan Peters, Jack Endino, Dale Crover and Channing in 2014
Crover, Channing and Dave Grohl in 2014
3 out of 5 Nirvana drummers in both pictures
Me: And over the years you seem to have a good relationship with the other drummers from Nirvana. Over the years you have been photographed with Dan Peters (drummer in 1990), Dale Crover (drummer in 1988 and 1990) and Dave Grohl (drummer from 1990-1994) and you seem to be in good spirits with the brotherhood of Nirvana drummers.
Chad: Yeah, that's true. I remember back when Nirvana was getting inducted into the [Rock and Roll] Hall of Fame...well, there's that one photo that has me, Jack, Dale, Dan - yeah, basically a bunch of drummers hanging out. Yeah, we've always had a pretty good relationship and I've always gotten along pretty well.
Justine: It's hard not to like him. [laughs]
Chad: Dave [Grohl] is another person I see very very rarely in my life, but when we do it's very cool. We've always just gotten along. I like that, it's cool that we have that.
Me: You mentioned the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I wrote my own op-ed, where I said "Please let Chad Channing be a part of this induction" and for whatever reason they didn't, but I thought it was a real nice and respectful class-act move of Dave Grohl to namecheck you specifically and your influence in the band. I thought that was very worthy.
Chad: Yeah, that was very cool. It's very much like Dave to do that too and that he mentioned everyone. He started by saying "most you don't know, I was actually the fifth drummer for Nirvana". It was a fun experience just to be there, even though I didn't get inducted. For me, to be honest, music is never about the accolades. It's about the music and reaching out to people. Many people have asked if I'm mad or sore about that, but actually I'm not. I mean if you go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you will see me there in pictures or something.
Can of Clouds onstage in 2024
Me: You mentioned the outreach you're doing to radio stations and seeking shows, what's coming up for the band?
Chad: Yeah, we just yesterday had everything sent off for the record to be made into vinyl.
Justine: It's in process right now. And we have our official album release show on May 24 at The Rabbit Box, this cute place. So fingers crossed the vinyl will be ready by then.
Chad: Yeah, we're hoping to get everything out there available in all formats. I'm hoping as things start to snowball, things could generate enough that we could play other places. We would love to play outside of Washington. I'd love to play the East Coast, I'd love to play Boston! At this point, I'm just waiting to see what happens. Fingers crossed.

Table ronde CDRT : Les télécom à la conquête de l’espace from ITRtv on Vimeo.
Animation : Paul Dubois, ITRnews / CDRT

The bronze-colored dress was in good condition, with a draped skirt, puffy bustle, and metal buttons that appeared to depict a Shakespearean motif. Ms. Rivers Cofield, an archaeologist, bought it for $100. Little did she know that the garment also contained a mystery: A secret pocket with a cryptic note. Part of the message, written on two, scrunched-up translucent sheets of paper, read: “Bismark Omit leafage buck bank / Paul Ramify loamy event false new event.” Ms. Rivers Cofield was baffled. Was it a writing exercise? A list? A code? “What the…?,” she wrote on her blog in 2014. “I’m putting it up here in case there’s some decoding prodigy out there looking for a project.” Wayne Chan, a data analyst at the University of Manitoba, finally cracked the case. Chan wrote. [...]“When I first thought I cracked it, I did feel really excited,” Mr.

Well, it was amazing until I read what Paul had to say. Thanks, Paul.
C'mon, dark cloud. You know what to do!
André, is that you, homie?
Shake it like a Polaroid picture!!
Oh, hey. Sup?
I'm sorry, Ms. Jackson.
For what?
Uh…
Wait a second. This isn't André 3000, is it?!
Uh…
IS IT??!!
😳
Ah, that's what I thought. I also saved a tiny bug from dying in the water.

The Arcade
Diego smoothed the front of his striped polo as he checked his reflection in the dark glass of the arcade’s front door. The neon lights of the street sign behind him cast blue and pink streaks across his visage. Staring back at him, his reflection showed a modestly tall nineteen year old, slim in frame, with a day’s stubble beginning to emerge on his upper lip. Diego’s eyes flicked quickly over to the “Help Wanted” sign scribbled on paper posted behind the glass walls. Running a hand over the curls of his hair, Diego took a deep breath and pushed open the door.
A wave of air conditioning and scent of popcorn greeted him as he entered the whirring, buzzing, and dinging world of the arcade. Bright screens cast a pale glow over the faces of teens and young adults alike as they gathered round cabinets of Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and Galaga to cheer on their friends. The sun had set outside; the dark and bright clash of the interior arcade caused Diego to squint slightly as his eyes adjusted. He scanned the rows of games cursorily, glancing out of instinct at his favorites. Q-bert and Burgertime were both taken by young kids who didn’t seem to know what they were doing. Diego chuckled and thought that if he got the job, he’d be sure to show some of the younger kids a few tricks of the trade.
Approaching the counter, Diego made sure to put on an easy going smile. He saw that the manager Sam, only one year older than Diego himself, was filling bags of popcorn. Diego laughed quietly as he watched Sam scoop one load of popcorn into a bag and then another into his mouth. The guy loved to snack apparently, Diego thought; remembering Sam’s trim track days in high school. They had never been close friends, more friendly acquaintances but Diego had no idea that Sam’s body weight had exploded when he began working at the arcade. Sam’s love handles were wide enough to resemble an armchair. He hoped that Sam had enough fond memories of him to offer Diego the job.
“Hey Sam,” Diego said casually but confidently, offering a friendly smile.
“Oh hey Diego,” Sam said, his mouth full of popcorn. “What’s going on?”
“I wanted to inquire about the Help Wanted sign out front,” Diego asked. “I’m out of junior college for the summer and love this place. Working here for a few months would be excellent.”
Sam placed the scoop back into the popcorn machine and wiped his buttery hands on his work polo. The shirt struggled to contain his soft mass, the wide indentation of his belly button jiggled as he walked over to Diego.
“Hey man, that would be great. I already know you’re a good dude and I’ve seen your arcade skills.” Sam was grinning but a dark cloud passed his eyes briefly. “But you know what…I’m not sure you’d fit in around here.”
Diego frowned slightly, his brows furrowed.
“What do you mean, Sam? I love video games,” Diego said, raising an eyebrow. “If you’d like a demonstration, pick any cabinet and I’ll show off some of my skills.”
Sam frowned slightly himself, his chubby cheeks and chin bunching up. “No it’s not that, I can’t fully put my finger on it but something changed when I started working here…like the first day…” Sam’s voice trailed off as the thought left him. “No you know what? You’re perfect. You’re hired!”
Diego felt a rush of excitement inside. His summer vacation was about to be filled with cool air conditioning and video games.
“When can you start?” Sam said, back to filling popcorn bags and dropping alternate scoops into his own mouth.
“Right now,” Diego said enthusiastically. “Thanks so much Sam, this is wonderful.”
Sam laughed, his cheeks bulging with popcorn.
“Nah man, I love that you are so into it. Let me get you a roll of tokens and a drink, hang out, take in the vibe of this place, and we’ll get you fitted for a work shirt tomorrow. Hey Paul!” Sam said, looking away from Diego to the prize wall.
Cashing out a customer stood Paul, another guy Diego remembered faintly from high school. Paul had been overly skinny in high school, his gym shorts frequently falling down when they had run the mile. The guy had to have been barely over one hundred pounds. In that slim memory’s place stood a rotund ball of a man. Paul’s glasses rested on a face that was almost completely spherical, his cheeks comically inflated. The arcade polo barely covered his bulging belly, round and firm as opposed to Sam’s quivering softness. Paul waved a chubby hand at the two of them as the customer walked away.
“Give Diego a roll of tokens, he’s starting with us tomorrow,” Sam said. “Here Diego, let me get you a Dr. Pepper to drink while you play.” Sam turned from the popcorn machine and filled a large cup with soda. Popping a straw through the lid, he handed it over to Diego.
With soda and tokens firmly in hand, Diego was feeling on top of the world. He had a new job in a place he loved to hang out, a free drink and tokens, and a great way to spend his Friday night. He ambled his trim body around the aisles of games, the cabinets humming with a new sheen now that he considered himself their caretaker.
He took a long sip of Dr. Pepper, weighed his options judicially, then chose one of the hardest games he knew, Dragon’s Lair. Popping in the two tokens required to play, he took another sip of soda and went to work mashing buttons. Time became an intangible concept as he made it surprisingly far in the game on his two tokens, grabbing a sip of soda whenever an animation gave him a moment to breathe. When he finally died and exclaimed in disappointment, he realized his soda was empty. His stomach gurgled as the scent of popcorn tickled his nose and he walked back to the snack counter to buy some from Sam.
“Hey Sam, let me get some popcorn,” Diego said, pulling out his velcro wallet.
“Absolutely my guy,” Sam said, pulling the largest bag they had. He then opened a box of Milk Duds from under the counter and poured them in. “Perk of working here.” He winked at Diego who smiled back. Handing over the popcorn along with a new Dr. Pepper, Sam waved away the offer of money, sending Diego back to the arcade cabinets feeling really happy with his choice of workplace.
Burgertime had freed up in the meantime so Diego planted himself in front of a game he knew he could destroy. Setting the popcorn and soda over the second player buttons, Diego went to town building burgers and dodging sinister hot dogs. A small group of young teens gathered around to watch his expertise, deftly moving the fingers of one hand over the buttons while his other hand escorted soda, popcorn, and milk duds to his mouth.
He reached Level 28 where the bugs of the game began making themselves known and soon lost his last life. The crowd gathered around him moaned in sympathetic misery as they shuffled off to watch other players. Diego picked up the empty popcorn bag and accidentally knocked his empty soda cup to the ground. Bending over to pick it up, he heard a loud rip.
Standing up quickly, Diego fumbled around his backside to find a large tear of his jeans opening to his white briefs. As he kept patting incredulously, his brain was trying to reconcile why his butt felt bigger and more padded than it ever had. In fact, his pants felt incredibly taut. Standing back up, he undid the tight front button of his jeans and a small belly released forward, his brown flesh settling in a new roll of fat that peeked out from under his very tight polo.
“What the actual fu..?” Diego began to say when his brain went fuzzy like television static. He couldn’t remember what he had looked before. Have I always been overweight, he thought, scratching the lower part of his belly. He felt hungry and walked to the snack counter, his chubby belly bouncing slightly.
“Hey Sam,” Diego said, setting his empty bag and cup on the counter. Sam was refilling the nacho cheese machine and eating his own massive plate of nachos. ‘Any chance for a refill?”
“Yea man, of course,” Sam said, his mouth full of cheese and chips. Sam grabbed the bag, filled it with popcorn, then instead of filling it with Milk Duds, put the bag under the spigot of liquid nacho cheese and drenched the popcorn. He filled Diego’s Dr. Pepper and replaced the straw with a strand of Red Vine.
“Doing okay on tokens?” Sam said, handing the snacks over.
“100%” Diego said, patting his belly. “Having a great night.”
Diego wandered over to Ms. PacMan which was still occupied but found Joust currently open and planted himself in front of it. Popping in a token, he grabbed a handful of cheese covered popcorn and began playing. Joust had never really been his game but he liked the ridiculousness of the ostrich mounted knights. Tonight for some reason, he was killing it in the game, racking up a high score he never came close to. Between deep sips of soda and handfuls of popcorn, he was annihilating the computer’s coded patterns.
His eyes only drifted away from the screen for a moment midgame when he felt something cold touching his stomach. Looking down, Diego saw a round slab of fat pressed up against the cabinet, his belly 3 times the size he had remembered it. He noticed a small set of chubby breasts pushing forward over the large belly, his nipples apparent through the sheer cotton of his polo. Glancing at his hands, Diego discovered that his fingers had inflated as well, the tops of his hands puffy and his fingers slightly swollen. His pants felt skintight and ready to burst.
All of this hit Diego as incredibly wrong and backing up from the game, he began to panic when suddenly, his mind went fuzzy again. He was hungry. Diego ran a chubby hand over his stomach and burped.
Waddling to the counter as his thick thighs rubbed together, Diego waved at Sam who was handing a slice of pizza to a group of teenage girls. When Sam finished the transaction, he himself waddled over to Diego and grinned.
“What can I getcha buddy?” Sam said, his polo creeping up on his belly. He tugged absentmindedly at it and Diego swore that Sam was fatter now than he had been when Diego initially came in.
“Weird request bud, but do you have some bigger clothes I can borrow? These are for skinny guys,” Diego said, gesturing to his tortured clothing.
“Oh I feel you there man. Yea I have a work uniform you can have since you’re working here anyway. Why not start now?” Sam opened the divider to let Diego squeeze through, his wide ass rubbing against the sides of the counter’s entry. The two waddled to the back where Sam rummaged through some bins, his breathing labored from the effort.
“What are you…XL? XXL?” Sam muttered, pulling polos and black pants from the bins. Diego thought for a moment that he was a medium but that couldn’t be right. He patted the expanse of his belly and remembered his actual size.
“Oh I graduated to XXXL two weeks ago. Gotta stop eating all those doughnuts for breakfast,” Diego said, chuckling along with Sam who agreed he needed to do the same. Pulling off the shreds of his original outfit, Diego put on the arcade’s XXXL work uniform and found it a comfortable fit. His belly loped over the front of his pants as his fattened chest stretched the stripes of the polo in two curved lines.
“Up for some pizza on your first shift?” Sam suggested, as the two waddled together back to the front.
“One hundred percent,” Diego said. He was starving. He grabbed two slices of pizza and made a sandwich, then began eating alongside Sam. Paul waddled over from the ticket counter and the three gave themselves over to a snack counter glut. As Diego felt the button on his pants began to strain and the front of his polo begin to creep up, he felt a brief moment of fuzzy terror quickly replaced by one thought: he loved working at the arcade.
