Magic the Gathering players: are you tired of free spells ruining your favorite format? Tired of having to shell out hundreds of dollars for a competitive mana base? I have good news! Pauper is the format for you!
Pros
There are no chase rares or Planeswalkers
All the dual lands are 50¢ taplands
The only free spells are Vanilla 4/4s, bad removal spells, and basic convoke spells
It’s basically impossible to get turn 1’d
No companions!
Every archetype is possible except 5-color good stuff
Cons
Not a lot of places have an active paper Pauper scene (but you can change that)

Connecting with the magic the gathering community here is going to be tough. While I miss my audience on Twitter, this will be a healthy change. If you like magic the gathering, I'd love to be moots!

pray do tell us about the pedh deck! i’ve been wanting to get into that format for a bit
I was going off of what I had on hand, so after a quick browse, I went with This Chad as my commander (I owned him but have never used him in anything, forgot he existed, and only remembered after combing through my uncommons)
Tumblr media
More details below the cut.
Threw some cheap slivers in there, a bunch of 1/1 creatures (the only creatures that didn't come in with those counters were Ainok Bond-Kin to give everything else first strike, and Selesnya Evangel to make more guys. Made sure to include a bunch of evasive 1/1's LIKE

Then I threw in some guys that are just a nightmare to fight

Mana dorks were in there as well, a bunch of them. Some utility creatures as well. To keep me competitive with life total, I threw a bunch of fog effects, as well as these two to give me steady life gain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rest of the deck was fog effects, defensive spells, stuff that throws other creatures into play, and proliferate effects.
The standout spell of the match that had two people taking notes was this though.
Tumblr media
Enchantment board wipe-ish that's pauper legal and costs 2 at instant speed.

Lightning Bolt Based on the original Alpha artwork by Christopher Rush
I love playing red, I love aggro, and I love bolting face. Definitely the only card in the Boon Cycle that I actually play regularly.

So I'm currently on a quest to read all the Magic: The Gathering cards released for Alpha/Beta/Unlimited and try to remeber most of them and then see how it all evolved. And whilst reading them I love to go the 'View all prints' section on Scryfall. Some of the cards didn't have reprints at all, others had some interesting ones like the Air Elemental, for which every iteration was pretty diffirent in flavour and art. But what caught my eye the most (for now) is the Dark Ritual.
Tumblr media
Its reprints are out of this world, every one hella unique and flavourful in its own way. Not gonna list all of them, you can see them for yourself. But as a fan of Phyrexia I especially love this one.
Tumblr media
But it might be that I'm also kinda enjoying the vibe of classic balck cards, they're that 'basic evil', but sometimes it is so badass. Even though I think the later revision of the colour is much better.

It's been awhile. I've constructed a tortex list in the gap. I plan to use its powers for grindy games and to teach people the power of their own instant spells.
I don't think tortex makes me a good person in anyone's eyes. In fact, I think it cements my place in hell, right next to the winconless stax and group hug players.
All of that being said, the list and its variants facinate me. I've always loved madness (the mechanic), dredge (see prior), and grinding (the sex act). So this vile stack of cards suits my worthless trans ass.
THE LIST
You probably have some questions. "Why street wraith/migratory greathorn?" As far as greathorn goes, it ramps you and lets your crypt rats act as an Anger of the Gods each turn while surviving themselves. Street Wraith not only survives that but lets me start the game with a lower life total for fantasy fulfillment reasons (it's for early/easy tortex swap targets).
I'm running Tilling Treefolk mainboard because of the large amount of cycle lands I decided to use. With proper setup this makes your treefolk bargain bin Mulldrifters. If I was less braindead I'd just run more Gnaw to the Bone copies and maybe a Phyrexian Rager or two. Fuck you, I'm not smart and like garbage. Night Soil is literally only there in the sideboard to annoy other Tortex players, because there are so many better options to deal with tortex than fucking night soil, and that feeling of using bad cards extends my spiteful lifespan.
The rest of the list mostly makes sense, and the whole point of tortex is to mix and match tools that suit your lgs's metagame. So go out there and ruin some weekday nights. If you find some non-passing facemasked shithead with black and green painted nails piloting this list, that's me and go fuck yourself.

Pauper tonight, we barely fired and a rough 1-2.
Round one lose to terror
Round two lose to elves
Round three win against rakdos reanimator.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zVx90O4fREavimC8oKPe-Q
Notes: too much of my sideboard is dedicated to burn, and I dont need nearly so many tap lands.
2-4 bombs that help close the game would help alot, considering the white and black land cyclers from lotr.
Also considering adding a color with the cawgates lands. Red gets alot of helpful filtering, a blue build with mulldrifter and undying effects just sounds fun.

Played pauper edh on Friday, I was informed with 1 hour's notice that some folks wanted to do pauper, and I didn't want to be the only person playing a regular deck with pauper folks. Threw a deck together in an hour from what I already had and HOO BOY
You know you're doing well when other players are writing down combos and cards you're playing to save for later

A brief interlude to talk about Oathbreaker! I chose to go the route of poison in order to speed games along even if it means being a soft archenemy. Also fits the name of the format, as Ajani broke his oath. Have you tried this format with your playgroup/LGS?

there's so much play to this card, i don't even know where to begin. for starters, this reanimates both greasefang and liliana at instant speed. in older formats, you can loop this with eternal witness for a chump blocker and +3 life each turn. you also do nasty things with this like whip an aura out of the graveyard for a cheaty static attach at instant speed. you can pull banishing lights out of the bin for an inverted anguished unmaking.
maybe i'm just a little too high on this card, but this is probably the most flexibility we've seen on a 3 drop in a long time.
