Do you know what the point of image descriptions are? Because I can’t understand why someone needs to describe an image that right in front of them.

They're an accessibility feature for people that are blind or have some other kind of visual impairment. A description of the picture via text means a screen reader can read them aloud for that person, so they can get the experience of the image, too.
