Bare with me because I haven't written one of these in about 6/7 years. I apologise if this isn't the best written as I am rusty.

Disclaimer: A lot of this review is being written with the assumption the reader knows this story (I'll give a brief explanation in the non-spoiler and spoiler parts). This is a VERY popular IP, it started as a novel in China, then got a c-drama, a donghua, and a manhua adaptation. All 4 formats have been translated in various languages including English and Japanese; it is popular among bl-lovers in English speaking countries as well as Japan too. I have watched the C-drama twice and the donghua once as well as consuming a LOT of fanfic and fanart for it over the years.

STORY

The overall basic plot for newbies is: Wei Wuxian wakes up in the body of Mo Xuanyu, a teenage boy, who summoned him via magic in order to get revenge on the people who hurt him. It becomes very clear to Wei Wuxian that something else is going on and investigates along with the help of some members from a clan called the Guzu Lan Clan. We follow a dual timeline that shows us Wei Wuxian from his youth up until present day and beyond.

Non-spoiler plot for MDZS fans: The stage play follows the novel/story very faithful right from the start. This installment leaves us at the arm pointing towards their next clue; the end of Chapter 19 in the novel apparently.

NON-SPOILER REVIEW

I really enjoyed this stage play! It might be because it's been a long while since I've been to one, or it just genuinely was that good - which is what I want to believe! There is a lot for me to compliment this show on.

I think the first/biggest thing all the hardcord fans what to know: Is it censored? NO! It is not censored! The gay is front and center, and open right away! Wei Wuxian as Mo Xuanyu is right away flirting and saying "yeah, because I like men!". You can always trust Japan, even though gay marriage is still technically illegal but being openly gay and having homosexual relations is not, to keep the gay content in. I was squealing in my seat at a lot of them.

Things that immediately impressed me with this stage play; the outfits, the music, the usage of the projection mapping, the fight scenes, the use of the stage, and quite a lot of the casting.

The music is a little different the c-drama (the official website posted a notice on day one that the music might sound a little different because of the instruments they're using, which was super Japanese of them.), but it is still beautiful and had me crying a few times.

This story has a lot of giant or mythical creatures that can be hard to create or have on stage but I really love how they tackled each battle, and every single fight was done differently and used different techniques to show off the magic and the "monsters", which I really liked - they were definitely flaunting their creative skills.

Kudos to the casting director because I felt a lot of them were absolutely the perfect choice. The standouts for me are Hirose Tomoki as Lan Wangji (he's perfect at showing Wangji's emotions without emoting or saying much which is what you want from an actor playing him!), Wada Takuma as Jiang Cheng (as soon as I saw him cast and as which character I KNEW he was perfect! He plays a lot similar characters like Jiang so I knew months ago he was going to bring Jiang to life well!), Ando Yuto as Lan Sizhui (he is an absolutely cutie patootie pookie, and I can see a lot of similarities between him and the c-drama's portayal of him already), and Yasui Kazuma as Nie Huaisang (as soon as he walked on stage, I could see Huaisang. He embodied him so well, I cannot wait to see how he plays the character in future installments!).

If I had to give gripes, I just have two very tiny, minute ones. First one is Kaneko/Wei Wuxian, but not towards him directly; 90-95% of the script is him so Kaneko has a very high bar to reach in this play - it's almost a one man show in this first installment - and because I went on the first day, naturally it's not the most perfect performance, so he did mess a word up here and there. But I put this blame mainly on the script/performance choice; I don't understand why Wei Wuxian's internal thoughts weren't prerecordered? Kaneko says all his in character lines, plus his internal monologue, PLUS narrating the story as a narrator here and there. I really think it was poor choice to have this guy basically speak almost the entire 2 and a half hours. I really don't understand why they didn't prerecord his internal monologue - we don't need to see him speak those words, the actor himself doesn't need to say these words. I hope in future installments, they use prerecordings for internal stuff, so the main actor isn't constantly talking and having a massive script to memorise, and to give him some breathing moments. My second gripe is; where are my wives?! Where are the women?! In this we did have Yanli be brought up a few times, especially when it came to Guangshan scenes but there was no actress cast for her. I really, really hope in future installments, we get perminant casting for Yanli, Madame Yu, AND Wen Qing - and for A-Qing when we get to her part too. I want to see my wives and daughter on stage please!

I am basically just going to tell you all the gay that happened because I need y'all to know how much I was squealing internally in my seat.

In Act One:

Very quickly from the beginning Wei Wuxian as Mo Xuanyu is like "ah yeah cos I like men," and playing it very gay when he needs to.

Then the very first time Wei plays the flute and Wangji comes in and recognises him immediately, just like the picture above Wangji grabs his hand and doesn't stop looking at him!!!! During this part Wei stares at him a little before getting shy and then looks away, waits a little, tries to look in Wanji's direction again, realises Wangji is still staring at him, and looks away again! While this scene in the play isn't as impactful as it is in the tv show with the "music goes wild while a camera spins around the pair as they stare at each other in recognition" moment, it's a quiet scene that, if you're watching just the two main actors, so much goes on between just their eye contact and body language especially from Hirose as Wangji; he played this scene so perfectly as Wangji. You could read all his feelings and emotions just from his stare. It is quite but meaningful in the play.

Then towards the end of act one when Wei as Mo runs into both Wangji and Jiang, Jiang talks about how Mo is gay and Wei is like "yeah, I like men *twirls hair* but doesn't men I like just any man!" to which Jiang is like "ohh??? So what kind of man do you like?" so Wuxian runs behind Wangji and says "I like man like Lan!" hoping to distract them but Lan turns around grabs his hand again and goes "you finally said it.." in such a quiet deep voice, and THEN says "I'm taking you back to Cloud Recess" and PULLED HIM OFF STAGE BY THE HAND! It was a very good moment.

In Act Two:

Act two was even gayer.

When we go back to present day and they're staying at the inn for the night, Wei Wuxian/Mo was still flaunting his gay and even started feeling up and coming onto A-Yuan a little and I was just screaming "THAT IS YOUR SON!!!" - internally of course.

Then Wei Wuxian and Wangji stay in the same room for the night but first Mo got onto his own bed and like sexy posed while not taking his eyes off Wangji - the audience was laughing of course - but then because Wangji can restarin himself, he gets into his own bed and starts to sleep. Which leads to Mo climbing on top of him so he couldn't ignore him. The sexual tension here between them! The conversation goes something like this:

Wangji: get off Mo: no Wangji: GET OFF Mo: I don't wanna! Wangji: …. You really won't get off? No: NO huff Wangji: okay Then Wangji stuns him so Wuxian can't move and sleeps on top of him the entire night 🤩

Back to the flashbacks at Cloud Recess: Wei Wuxian is in detention and in the very first detention session he's like "Wangji is such a bijin (bijin is like "beautiful person" but it's way stronger than just calling someone "kirei/beautiful". He's basically calling him a goddess of beauty 😭). His face is so pretty too" BRO CALM YO SELF.

In the next scene, Wei Wuxian is explaining how he AND Wangji ended up getting back-wacked punished; by sneaking in alcohol and fighting on the roof again with Wangji, but in the stage play version instead of actually fighting on the roof this time, Wei Wuxian just straight up ends up hugging Wangji on the roof and that's why they fall down!!! (I dunno if that's the same in the novel/manhua, sorry.)

After Wei Wuxian tries to become friends with Wangji in the cold bath, he gets too close and Wangji very obviously gay panics and moves away from him twice but Wuxian keeps moving towards him. Then Wei Wuxian is like "y'know there's so many pretty girls at Lotus Pier" and Wangji just says "I have no interest".

Finally, when Wei Wuxian presents Wangji with the rabbits, he's like "oh look at the position they're in. They're on top of each other. But I guess it doesn't matter to rabbits whether if they're male or female" all the while Wangji is trying "I don't think they're doing that."

Okay, all the gay is out of the way, now onto the other spoiler stuff.

Before they head to the inn for the night in the present, Wuxian is slouching around waiting to move, but the juniors trying to fix his posture but straightening his back and pulling his knees together so he's not manspreading which I thought was cute.

Also Wuxian's reactions in the past whenever Guangchen is there. There's a specific moment where everyone is greeting everyone at Cloud Recess and Wuxian doesn't even bother to bow to him, but bows to Qiren a second later 🤣 it's subtle things like this and like with the juniors that really add to the characterisation!

When Wuxian goes back to Cloud Recess in the future and sees all the bunnies, the actor actually used us, the audience as the rabbits, and was like "wow this one is black (girl with black here), but this one is a different colour, oh and this one! But they're all so cute and so many though!" which I really liked.

Final Ment

At the end of the show, one actor got to do a little comment, and in the night show is was Wada who plays Jiang, so he did a little thank you comment at the end but accidentally said "thank you" with the two main ones instead of waiting a beat to say it together.* He looked so embarrassed, and after bowing he looked at Tsuchiya Naotake (Lan Jingyi) and they both walked off stage giggling.

*In Japanese stage plays, usually the very last thing is:

Main Actor(s): Thank you for coming today. Rest of the Cast a beat later: Thank you! *everyone bows together*.

I really hope we get an announcement for the second installment on April 6th (the final day for this show).

Screen+ Interview with Yano Shougo and Uchida Yuuma

“I was very, very happy to watch the continuation of ‘Given’ as a fan!”

Originally scheduled to come out in May, “Given the Movie” was finally released on August 22nd. Mafuyu, Ritsuka, Haruki and Akihiko can be seen on the big screen. The story of this work has its spotlight on Haruki and Akihiko, as well as on Akihiko and his roommate, Ugetsu. How will things go for Mafuyu and Ritsuka, who are in a band with Haruki and Akihiko? We have talked with the person in charge of Mafuyu’s voice, Yano Shougo, and the one in charge of Ritsuka’s, Uchida Yuuma, about the movie, which was a much awaited continuation of the TV series.

——“Given” was broadcasted back in 2019 as a TV anime. How were the reactions at the time?

Yano: I could feel that there were fans of the original work from all over the world. Fans from other countries said they liked my acting and my voice, which I was truly grateful for.

Uchida: When the casting was decided, I was told that the original work itself is very much loved, and when my participation was announced, many comments saying, “I’m looking forward to the broadcast” reached me. I keenly felt the high level of the expectations.

——During the time of the TV series, the fact that it was going to be “Noitamina’s first adaptation of a BL comic” became a hot topic. Did you have any particular feelings about this back when you were working on it?

Yano: I had next to no knowledge of Boys Love, so I tried reading the original work first of all, in order to see what kind of series it was. In doing so, I felt that the series really cherished a vibe that seemed to have been cut off from daily life. As I kept on reading, I found myself inserted into that world in a natural manner, as if I was actually there.

Uchida: I did not have much enthusiasm regarding the Boys Love part. If I had to say it, it was a series that depicted the machinations of people’s hearts in a sensible way, so I put an emphasis on pursuing this with care. What turns out to be the key point changes depending on each series, so I gave proper thought to what the most important part of this work was in that sense, and performed while hoping that I would be able to express it.

——What were your impressions when you heard that this work would be shown on the big screen?

Yano: I was overjoyed to be able to play Mafuyu again and very, very happy to watch the continuation of “Given” as a fan.

Uchida: During the phase of the TV anime series, I had heard that it would lead to a movie. That the things depicted in the original work were planned to be depicted in a movie too. For this part, I was always conscious on the inside that, on top of my performing for the TV anime, the story was going to be portrayed up to that far.

——What were you careful of and what did you keep in mind when playing Mafuyu and Ritsuka?

Yano: I was conscious of being a high school boy. Mafuyu has a complicated past where he lost someone who was important to him, so a gaping hole opened in his heart and he was in the dark, unable to take even one step forward. But when you see him talking to his friends and playing basket with a smile in his daily life at school, you find that he is a normal high schooler. As he absorbed himself completely in music, I thought he was a high school student living youth itself. 

Uchida: Ritsuka is not very good at expressing himself with anything other than a guitar, so I made sure to properly feel the difference in sense of closeness from when he talks to his bandmates and when he talks to Mafuyu. And also the sensation that “he’s in there”, as part of the series, so to say. There are quite a lot of scenes where the conversations overlap naturally. I aimed to carefully pursue the sensible aspects of those parts, as well as the mood of the exchanges and such.

——In this movie, there is a close-up on the romance between Haruki and Akihiko. From your point of view, how is the nature of their relationship?

Yano: Haruki-san is like a lubricating oil within the band, so I think there is a side of him that ends up pushing down his own feelings. Akihiko-san lives the way he wants to, so they mesh, but they are not in gear at all when it comes to their love lives, and I guess this comes with “understanding each other’s feelings” as adults. From the perspective of the viewers, I belive Haruki-san is in the most emotionally easy-to-relate position, but I think Akihiko-san’s existence only establishes itself because Haruki-san can strongly impact him. I think Akihiko-san is the only one for Haruki-san, and all the more, Haruki-san is the only one for Akihiko-san.

Uchida: They can rely on one another and probably respect each other in some aspects, but they are people who have a kindness that they do not put into words, as well as an unfairness that they purposefully do not speak about, so I have the impression that they “can’t say things straight”. They are still at an age where they just barely graduated from college, but they are grown-ups when compared to Ritsuka and Mafuyu, so looking from where I am now, I think this sense of distance in which they are unable to frankly express that they long for each other is “well, something that would happen”. As expected, we start worrying about all sorts of things as we get older.

——Please tell us the highlights of “Given the Movie”.

Yano: The presence of the person named Murata Ugetsu, whom Akihiko used to date and continues living with despite breaking up, is pretty big. He is a prodigy like Mafuyu and adores both music and Akihiko-san to death, but his music will be ruined if he keeps up like that, so he chooses to throw away Akihiko-san. Regardless, he is unable to throw him away, so they are stagnated in the same spot all along. I think that Ugetsu, who wants someone to understand his feelings and pain, is very similar to Mafuyu. There is a song that the band Given plays during the movie, and it is obvious that they want to deliver the song to somebody, but there is a part of it that I sang while putting my feelings towards Ugetsu in particular into it, so I think people can enjoy the movie even more by linking up with the song as they watch it.

Uchida: From the TV series, it carefully portrays the sense of distance between one person and another, as well as relationship values. Even if there is not that big a meaning in every single thing, there is nothing in vain, and the accumulation of this moves the hearts of those two. I think “Given” is a series that literally embodies the fact that the accumulation of small things transform into colossal feelings. If you watch from the TV series all the way to the movie, won’t you be able to enjoy it while sensing the developments of their feelings even better?

——Please give a message to the fans who have been waiting for the release all this time!

Yano: Thank you very much to everyone who eagerly waited for “Given the Movie”! The TV series was about a high school duo, but this tone is centered around the adult group that consists of Haruki, Akihiko and Ugetsu. I think the parts where they react to love will be, from start to finish, a time where your chests will tighten. I think there are aspects of it that anyone can feel a connection with, so please watch over them warmly.

Uchida: It would be great if everyone could watch the members of Given as they embrace all sorts of feelings and try to change little by little, as well as the beauty of their changing. There are also scenes in this work that cleanse your heart. By all means, go enjoy it in the big screen!

Regardless of that first meeting it puts everything into perspective when we take a look at Shougo and Tesshou's relationship! They've known each other for so long, no wonder Tesshou was so protective of him... "His friends are my friends. His little brother is my little brother, his family is my family!" That just hits harder... It also makes Shougo's grief incredibly sadder :''''') ...
