I still find it really funny how Kabru, as per the bonus post story chapter reveals, basically take care of all the actual political and democratic stuff involved in being a king, which is good because I am sure otherwise Laios might had already caused many a conflicts just in his first week. The guy is honestly in his element there, I bet he said he hates it and it's gonna kill him for stress but he wouldn't quit if his life depended on it.

Absolutely agree! He will be doing the job until he dies or is dragged away from his desk because it's so important to him, but of course he'll complain too. Who wouldn't? LOL

Kabru is basically the one running the show, he has the education necessary to do it and the charisma to get all the pieces to work together, and between him, Yaad and Marcille, they're able to make Laios seem like not just a functional ruler, but a fantastic one.

With Yaad you have tradition and the familiarity of having been raised to rule, intimate knowledge of the history of the land of Merini. With Kabru you have the best top of the line political and cultural education you could possibly get. He speaks so many languages! He knows all the different major world cultures! He knows all the different countries and what they're like! And he's very good at talking to people and making deals. Then with Marcille you have emotional intelligence, magic, and familiarity with Laios and how he is, trust and friendship and a solid ability to work together.

And then finally you have Laios himself, who is a good person with a lot of strategic intelligence, huge amounts of knowledge when it comes to monsters and the natural world (which their kingdom has a lot of!!!) and a fantastic ability to think outside the box and come up with unexpected solutions... I think if they ever had to go to war, they'd obliterate their enemies, not gonna lie. (EDIT: in case people are looking for the translation of the epilogue, it's in the comments!)

Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?

so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.

lichen :

lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !! to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)

moss :

mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)

mould :

mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs. (note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)

mushrooms :

so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.

so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.

Roguefort Cookie is localized as they/them in English in Cookie Run, but I've seen some debate over their gender in the original Korean; I've seen some say that they were originally male in Korean . But when I asked(in kr) about this on twitter, 1 of my korean twitter mutuals found this tweet directly from the mouth of Roguefort Cookie's designer, Artist G:

i read the story you wrote about a dragon in the Hidden World getting lost in the mushroom tunnels and suffocating from the spores, and it inspired my brain to come up with a crack theory:

THW is secretly a horror movie about Toothless being infected with a parasitic brain fungus that compels dragons to go into the Hidden World and die so the fungus can continue to grow. all those big pretty mushrooms in the Hidden World are the fruiting bodies of this fungus in the breeding stage of its life cycle, which it can only reach in the conditions of the Hidden World after absorbing enough nutrients from the corpses of the dragons it has infected, releasing tons of spores to be carried on the wind currents out of the Hidden World to spread across the archipelago and infect dragons far and wide. the real reason Toothless acts like a slobbering idiot in this movie is because there's a fungus eating away at his brain. it's also why he forced Berk's entire flock to follow him into the Hidden World. the fungus compelled him to feed it.

as for the Light Fury, her species have a symbiotic relationship with the Hidden World fungus, and are immune to it. one of the effects the fungus has on the brain of infected dragons is that it makes them find Light Furies irresistably sexy, allowing the Light Furies to seduce and lure infected dragons into the Hidden World that wouldn't be able to find their way there alone. All of Berk's flock, and all the other dragons we see in the movie (aside from the Light Furies), are now dead, consumed by the fungus and the Light Furies in the Hidden World.

The fungus cannot infect humans but it still has harmful effects on their brains. Snotlout and the twins acted the way they did because they got caught in a cloud of spores at some point before the movie. Hiccup let the dragons go and Astrid didn't stop him because they both got heavily exposed to the spores while in the Hidden World. as we can see in Homecoming, New Berk's proximity to the Hidden World has not done its populace any favors. the Night Lights? just dreams and hallucinations in Hiccup's fungus addled brain. in reality Toothless died not long after returning to the Hidden World and did not produce any offspring. the Light Fury scavenged part of his corpse and the fungus took the rest.

this is a really stupid theory, and yet it somehow makes more sense than the actual plot of the movie.

I'm happy that my little fanfic inspired you! I really like your theory/take on the mushroom hell idea - it's funny that soooo many aspects of THW really do make more sense if those mushrooms are actually like....the dragon version of cordyceps/zombie-ant fungus lmao

Ah, you're welcome!!! That's my ultimate goal, I want to feed everybody, because I think there is SO MUCH to say about KabuMisu, and about Dungeon Meshi... so I try to do both.

UNFORTUNATELY Japanese fandom tends to not write a lot of fanfic, and I know that some Japanese fans have been reading my fics, via machine translation... So I think there's not much available. But everything in the AO3 Kabru/Mithrun tag is good, so I'd recommend starting there. And if you haven't read "Keep your eyes on me." by amaimai, and you want to read some wonderful smut about the pairing, I HIGHLY recommend it. A++ no notes, 100% wonderful read start to finish. Since I really can't recommend any Japanese fanfic, let me drop some Japanese artist recs, since some of them have done mini comics and doujins. In order to browse pixiv you'll need to make an account, but it's free to use. Jaco is the MVP, the CEO, the President of Kabumisu. Their work is incredible and they've drawn a couple of complete doujins, some of which you can find translated into English on various corners of the internet. They are also an incredibly sweet and nice person who will do their best to talk to you, even though they don't really speak English. Tsy is not really in the Dungeon Meshi fandom anymore, sadly, but they have a lot of incredible, beautiful work. Bae also does a lot of gorgeous fashion-oriented stuff, and if you like Promare, they're into that too!

Sin has an amazing dynamic, sketchy style, and a fantastic sense of humor.

ナノコ has a unique style that I love.

那 (Rainbox) is someone else who isn't really in the Dungeon Meshi fandom anymore, but they have a lot of wonderful art that shows the soft and tender side of Kabumisu. Also they ship Helki/Milsiril, and they have a tumblr, though I think more of their work is on Pixiv.

Go forth and feast! And don't be shy about leaving nice comments for Japanese fans. Even just saying "I love this!" (これ 大好き!) would probably make them happy!
