Mushrooms play a significant role in our world and are vital for the ecosystem. They are the fruiting bodies or reproductive structures of a much larger underground fungus. To reproduce, it needs to produce mushrooms and that need specific temperatures and humidity levels. Some mushrooms can stay dormant underground for many years or even decades until weather conditions are right to produce mushrooms and distribute spores. Story in caption. Week 8 - Pink Oyster (#funguary week 4) This week, we delved into a very humid part of the hidden fungal valley. The scientists presented me another fungus, named ‘pink oyster’ mushroom. But I suppose the name ‘flamingo mushroom’ would be more opportune! Like many of its brethren, the fungus grows on wood, especially small shrubs and sticks. Its micells grow all over and into the wood, devouring it slowly. But once the food source begins to dwindle, this fungus not only develops the most charming pink fruit bodies, it also takes control of the surviving dead sticks. By contracting in an astonishingly coordinated way while using the wood as a skeleton, the fungus leaves its former home, stalking through the wood in search of new feeding grounds. To the uninformed observer, this intriguing fungal creature really appears like a small pink flamingo slowly stalking through the wood! Its slow and charmingly awkward movements ensure optimal disposal and spread of the spores. And when the fungus finally gets caught in an impenetrable shrub, unable to move further, the micell will start spreading again and explore this new feeding ground. Amazing! Yet, as much as I love this valley, it’s time to move on. I encountered a competing research team on our way back and received a most tempting invitation.

Story in caption. Week 6 - Ghost Mushroom (#funguary2023 week 2)

This concealed valley is packed with fungal marvels! Last night, when I could not sleep, I went outside the Dungeon Corp’s secret R&D facility. I stumbled across a research team moving into the dark jungle. Being a curious gnome, I obviously followed them into the darkness. After a while, we came into an area lit by a bright, ghostly luminescence. Shining rodent ghosts swarmed eerily glowing mushrooms, spreading on a fallen tree! Closer examination revealed that the mice were not actual ghosts, but ordinary mammals covered in the fungus’ glowing spores. I can see why the researchers called the fungus ‘ghost mushroom’. Despite its enchanting appearance, it is a nasty parasitic fungus. It had infected and killed the tree. Now, its fruit bodies lit up the night, attracting a plethora of curious small mammals. The true malevolent brilliance of its life cycle revealed itself as hunting owls circling above. Running for their lives, the brightly glowing mice stood with no chance of escape. One by one, they fell prey to the hungry owls. By bringing the mice back to their nests, hidden inside the trunk of trees, they also brought doom to their home tree and a new feeding ground to the fungus’ offspring. I don’t dare to imagine why the researchers are interested in this nasty fungal specimen!
