A day of experiments with resin for me. A block with bamboo and alcohol ink for future pendants and two test attempts at making an Arcane rune for a commission - was testing colours, luminescence, a way to carve the shape and how pigments will spread.

Cerium glows yellow: Chemists discover how to control luminescence of rare earth elements

Researchers at HSE University and the Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered a way to control both the color and brightness of the glow emitted by rare earth elements. Their luminescence is generally predictable—for example, cerium typically emits light in the ultraviolet range. However, the scientists have demonstrated that this can be altered. They created a chemical environment in which a cerium ion began to emit a yellow glow. The findings could contribute to the development of new light sources, displays, and lasers. The study has been published in Optical Materials. Rare earth elements are used in microelectronics, LEDs, and fluorescent materials because of their ability to emit light in precisely defined colors. This depends on how their electrons behave when absorbing and releasing energy.

I do like giving people sneak peaks of the latest written scenes whenever I do a post about Luminescence, because the posts are usually very far apart between them. Though i believe sneak peak was from the same chapter! XD

For decades researchers have been exploring how to store data in glass because of its potential to hold information for a long time -- eons -- without applying power. A special type of glass that changes color in different wavelengths of light, called photochromic glass, holds promise for stable, reusable data storage. Now, researchers have developed a doped photochromic glass that has the potential to store rewritable data indefinitely, according to research published in ACS Energy Letters. Certain types of eyeglasses get darker when exposed to wavelengths of light emitted by the sun and then shift back to a colorless lens indoors when no longer exposed to those light waves through a process called reversible photochromism. Likewise, other types of photochromic glass can switch color in response to different wavelengths of light, making this material attractive as an inexpensive and stable platform for storing vast amounts of information in a small space. But the challenge in using photochromic glass for data storage involves not only writing information into the glass but also erasing and rewriting it ad infinitum. Now, Jiayan Liao, Ji Zhou, Zhengwen Yang and a multidisciplinary team have made progress toward this goal by creating reversible, tunable patterns on photochromic gallium silicate glass.
