Unwise expectations
In my travels around the Internet, I don’t find many thoughtful others delving into conceptual understanding of music recording and playback, and I continue looking for interesting writings that assist understanding of my personal (subjective) experience when listening to recordings rendered by my equipment systems.
Mastering engineer and audiophile Dave McNair reckons that most audiophiles…

been thinking about whumpee & music
Whumpee was raised in a lab as a human experiment. All their life they knew nothing but sterile rooms, needles, and beeping machines. A cold, clinical setting where the only proof of life was the monitors displaying their heart rate.
Imagine Whumpee's confusion at the world they find after being rescued by Caretaker & the team. There's colour, new sounds, fresh air. Mundane things spark an insatiable fascination and curiosity in Whumpee, but they were conditioned in the lab not to do anything without instruction so they feel like they can't explore. Their interests are such normal things that Caretaker doesn't even think to tell Whumpee they can have look at them because to Caretaker it doesn't feel necessary.
Kitchen appliances, armchairs, fairy lights, colourful flowers in the garden. But what fascinates Whumpee most is music. They've never heard it before. Why would they have? The lab was restricted to the noise of surgery and science.
They love the melodies, the new sounds, and the variety. But Caretaker rarely plays anything on the speakers, often using headphones instead because they don't want to accidentally disturb Whumpee. Whumpee thinks about the headphones for hours and hours, but never touches them, scared of the consequences.
But one day curiosity gets the better of them. Caretaker walks into their room to find Whumpee sitting in the middle of the floor wearing their headphones, rocking back and forth gently to whatever is playing in their ears. Caretaker has never seen them look so content.

Extra, the market
When I read that keyboard pioneer and former Spooky Tooth Gary Wright had died, a comment on the social media post made me recognise something quite profound. Someone had said that this sad news was more loss in a rough week for the music industry. No mention of personal or family sadness. But, I had read the news as an artistic loss, not a business thing.
We’re so conditioned to see ourselves…

They don’t tell you this about gigs but when you’re listening to or thinking of a song that you also got to see live, you can close your eyes and picture listening to that song at your gig and you'll be back there, and this is 100% free and repeatable
