2 months before november 24th - the album release After months of honing her craft, Y/N had finally finished recording her second music album. The album was a culmination of her dreams. Each song was like a labor of love, a piece of her heart poured out for everyone to hear. And the album was about something very special. Someone who Y/N spent every breathing moment thinking about. Someone who she loved so dearly. Her Harry. She was sure nearly all the songs on the album were dedicated to him and she had been hiding them away from him, waiting for the right moment to show him what she’d been working on.

One evening, a few weeks before November 24th (Harry’s birthday & the release date for her album), Y/N had returned home with excitement in her heart. She finally had a copy of her new album in her hands. Stepping through the front door she was greeted by the familiar scent of Harry's favourite candle mingling with the aroma of something delicious cooking in the kitchen. The smell of home met her at the door everyday and it was something she'd never get tired of.

She kicked off her shoes and padded through the hallway, anticipation bubbling in her chest. Into the sitting room she went to find Harry lying on their navy sofa, his phone in his hand, scrolling on tiktok. His eyes flicked up at the sound of her pattering across the floor in her socks. Putting his phone on the arm of the sofa, he got up to greet her with a hug and a kiss on the forehead.

This was a daily routine for Y/N and Harry - either one of them coming through the day later than the other and just immediately embracing each other. The feeling of comfort was unmatched.

“You’re finally home,” he said, wrapping his hands around her frame “-i’ve missed you.”

“Missed you too H.” Y/n replied slightly muffled as her head was resting against his chest.

As she pulled away slightly from their hug, Harry could feel some sort of hard plastic digging into his side. With furrowed brows, he looked down at the item in her hands and then back up at Y/N, still as confused as he had been originally.

“What have you wasted your money on today?” he joked, remembering every silly little thing Y/N had bought ranging from outfits for the dog to matching toothbrush holders - she had an obsession with buying the most random, useless stuff and most of it was left for Harry to store away in the spare room once she realized it was no use to her anymore.

“Nothing,” she laughed, gently hitting him in the chest. “Here, come sit back down, I’ve something to show you.”

Leading him back to his original seat on the coach, Y/N walked just a few steps behind the sofa, placing the CD into a blue stereo sat on a small table. Harry watched as she put the CD in, curiosity overwhelming him, his eyes following her as she sat back down next to him, crossing her legs, eyes beaming with excitement and her stomach full of butterflies.

“Just listen,” she said.

As the first notes filled the room, Harry listened intently, his heart swelling with pride as he recognised Y/N’s unmistakable voice.

With the album progressing as each song ended and a new one began, Harry’s eyes grew larger and he felt his hands reaching out to hold Y/N’s. Each song seemed to speak directly to him, capturing moments from their relationship with clarity and emotion. He listened in awe as Y/N poured her heart and soul into every lyric, baring the deepest thoughts and feelings for the world to heart. Whilst Harry wasn’t the biggest fan of public displays of affection, this album was the completely opposite, he was so proud of her.

By the time the last song faded away, Y/N was sat with a big grin on her face and Harry had one to match her on his . A feeling of love and gratitude was overflowing in his heart - to be fair he always had that feeling around Y/N but something about these songs and her face smiling up at him made his heart want to explode.

“Every song…it’s about us, isn’t it?” he whispered.

Y/N nodded, her eyes shining with love. “Yes, H. Every lyric in every song, all for you,”

''You soppy bastard,'' he grinned, laughing as she rolled her eyes.

''What do you think of it?'' Y/N asked, eyebrows furrowed, ''is it too soppy?''

''Not at all,'' Harry paused, ''I love it - honestly.''

''Really?'' Y/N smiled. She knew Harry was never one to lie to her so him expressing that he actually liked the album was a great feeling for her - he truly meant it.

''Yes, really'' Harry confirmed. ''I mean, it's no KSI but I'd definitely give it a listen on Spotify.''

He received a light swat on the back of the head ''Oh shut up.''

Echoes of his laugh filled the sitting room as he held onto Y/N's hands, eyes meeting hers. ''Being serious now, it's the best thing I've heard in a while, m' so proud of you my girl.'' And with a kiss of her forehead, Y/N relaxed, content she had her boy's approval.

Also sorry if this doesn't sound accurate I tried my best. There's nothing romantic in this I view this as a platonic post but you could view it however you want. Sorry if this is cringe

ALSO I kinda took forever to publish this cause I accidentally published it on accident and had to restart which made me lose motivation but now I'm finished ♡

Let's say you joined beta squad when it first started. Maybe you know Sharky for a long time and we're introduced to the others then instantly clicked

At first you were hesitant when you were invited to join. But you made the decision to join, which changed your life forever

They weren't friends they were family to you

They'd always look out for you like you were their little sister

You had a bond with each and one of them. You would hang out off camera and talk to them whenever

So much teasing

If you're the youngest they'd sometimes joke about it regarding the age

If you're shorter than AJ you both get teased and made fun of

If you're taller, my gosh AJ would be an absolute joke of the group for being shorter than you

They are all overprotective and view you as a little sister. They want you to be safe and want what's best for you

Maybe they had a little crush on you before..

Being close friends with Nella, Darkest and Filly. You all are good friends

You and Chunkz are the duo who cooks with each other.

You, Kenny, and Sharky being the duo in the jungle video that makes the video 10x entertaining

Niko and you are absolutely hilarious together and people fear you both for your pranks and the type of content you both make

You and Aj being the ones who get teased the most

But you and AJ sometimes have a violation battle over the stupidest things

Your Kenny's number one support. You'd work out with him and keep him company during his training and encourage him

Chunkz and you are super loud and chaotic. But he sometimes brings you around to his family dinners and lets you hang out with his family

Sharky's sisters love you. I imagined you doing Shakira's makeup on stream before

Also feel like AJ is more comfortable with you and will sometimes hug you (like in the mukbang video where he was hugging Chunkz when Sharky was laughing at him almost drowning )

They'd never do anything without you

They would never admit it but they're your biggest supporters and would give you their honest opinions about decisions you make

They definitely would try to be annoying commenting rude things on your Instagram posts

Them being rude to you as a joke but fans take it seriously and make dramatic edits about it. (Just like the AJ edits but 10x dramatic)

When you all lived together you would always cook for them so they wouldn't always order take out everyday

They loved your cooking and sometimes show up to your house uninvited just for you to cook for them

Unless you're a bad cook, I could imagine you attempting to cook but end up burning the food. Which leads to them making fun of you for it and it becomes a huge joke

You and Harry pinaro having the worst relationship ever to the point where people actually think you two hate each other

You two don't get along (I love/hate Harry)

In the weakest link videos I feel like you'd get the hardest questions since everyone knows you have the most intelligence out of all of them

Sometimes when a person collaborates with the channel and they end up flirting and the boys would either tease or get weirded out

I feel like they'd tease depending on the person

If it was stormzy, KSI, or anyone else they'd definitely get weirded out by it

If it was Trent they'd tease you about it till the day you die. They'd bring it up in almost every sports related conversation or video.

You being the mom of the group and making sure everyone is okay. You'd text them everyday to make sure they're doing fine

Since you're a fan favorite and have good video ideas, they like to hear your opinion in videos since you're actually smart and your videos get a lot of views.

Chunkz gets jealous over the fact your Smarter than him

Unless your dumb

you win come dine with me and Niko gets absolutely so upset that you won over him. He accused you of cheating and supposedly hiring someone to cook the meals you made

Them calling you for advice before dates and advice about girls in general. They come to you when they need help with any life situations since they know they could trust you

(Niko definitely would ask u advice if his girlfriend ever got mad at him)

Speaking of his girlfriend, you two are best friends.

if you ever got in a relationship they'd do a full integration on them

They want what's best for you. They have to know what type of person you're dating and need to know if they're treating you right. It's their job to make sure their friend is happy and in a healthy relationship. Especially if you're like a sister to them

If you're ever feeling down they do anything to try to make you laugh or brighten up your mood

Imagine filming the box video with amp

You leaving the box after AJ left since you landed on leave the box. But you genuinely felt like Niko had a better chance at winning since he won the first one

But if one of the amp members flirts with you they'd get weirded out and annoyed because everyone knows how amp is (love amp though especially Chris & agent)

I don't say they would be jealous, they just feel like they should protect you from getting your heart broken

Or maybe they do get jealous (up to you to decide)

In the cooking video for amp channel let's say you and Duke teamed up (sorry filly)

Duke is Duke so obviously he flirted with you trying to get your number and use his cringe "rizz" on you

But before the video, you, Chris, and Davis had a conversation. You gave them advice, out of all the amp members they connected with you the most

But the amp cook off was chaotic especially with you

You actually tried for half the challenge before giving up and just having fun. It was better to just entertain the viewers instead of actually trying to win

You decided to annoy everyone by moving their stuff

I imagine you, aj, fanum, and Niko get in an argument and start throwing flour each other

you and Duke losing which leads to you threatening the person who switched out everyone's cakes

you and Niko both manage the beta squad Instagram and tiktok since you know all the popular trends

Even though everyone is behind Instagram and tiktok, you are mostly the one posting on it, and the one who replies to comments

Niko and you are both know for being menaces and immature. Especially when you two are filming together, you both make the most craziest pranks. Your friendship with him is so adorable and wholesome. You both always joke around and add on to each other's jokes to make it more funny. Always having laugh attacks with him.

You and Chunkz are literally the duo who randomly burst into a song together. You two both send songs to each other and both show a huge interest in music. I like to imagine you and Chunkz going on a drive or just hanging out to sing to music. You two also know a lot of people and are the ones who know a lot of celebrities. You two are the ones who message famous people to Collab with the Beta squad.

You and AJ love hating on each other, even though he'll leave positive messages on your Instagram to be funny, he bashes you and insults you at the same time. It's a bit confusing at times to tell if you're completing each other or insulting. But you two never get offended and know when to stop.

Man, you and Kenny have such a bond. You were his biggest supporter during his Boxing matches and Practices. If you love to work out or get exercise, you both go to the gym together or you'll go on diets with him so he won't be alone. He always goes to you for advice on girls. You two laugh at the random things and can't take anything serious. You and him always are always whispering things to each other during filming.

Sharky and you are known to laugh so hard where you can't even breathe. You two laugh in serious situations and always look at each other before bursting out laughing. He likes to drag you outside for a walk and just listen to music with each other. Similar to Chunkz, he sends you songs that he thinks you'll like.

overall the boys are grateful for you and everything you've done for them. You're like family to them. They all love you. They are family, not just a friend group to you. They love you and always will.

Sleeping.

Prompt: After staying up later to finish an edit, chip tries to get into bed without waking up his girlfriend, not to his knowledge she wakes up as he mumbles his wholesome thoughts to her.

Warnings: short, FLUFF, mentions of y/n,

Stretching his arms above his head, he edits the recordings of all the boys splicing the sidemen among us into one perspective of the video, it was already two in the morning, he was just doing the final round then it was time for bed.

Running his hand through his already messy hair, he adjusts his headphones, fixing his posture.

“Just a minute..” he mumbles to himself, splicing the clips and colour coordinating the clips fine.

Chip smiles as he does a run through seeing if there’s any mistakes, adding his own little inside jokes to the wallet part of the admin card swipe, no shame in giggling to himself as he adds a photo of Baldski on KSI’s part and Ethan when fat on his.

Even giggling when he adds an old photo of ChrisMD in his braces and stupidly big ears.

He adds his own little effects and finally decides to finish the cut down in the morning.

Heading to the bathroom he brushes his teeth, shutting his eyes as he accidentally obnoxiously stumbles next to his girlfriend, the mattress groaning under his weight as he wraps his arms around me.

“Love you..”

He says quietly, tightening his grip on her waist.

Getting frustrated with the fact he now can’t sleep even after struggling to keep his eyes open why not talk himself to sleep.

I shift slightly, mumbling out a quick: “Joshua..”

He clearly doesn’t hear me from all of his shuffling around.

After some silence I hear his voice again.

“You’re the best.. thing that’s even happened to me.. sometimes the boys call me names but- I don’t care.. I love you.”

He nuzzled into my neck as I keep my breath soft, he thinks I’m fast asleep.

“Struggle to show it sometimes.. we’re both busy..” he hums.

He holds me tighter as his breaths grow deeper.

The next morning, I wake up first and feel soft.

I wasn’t really used to such praise but as I look at his sleeping face I feel even more In love.

I climb out of bed and make two cups of coffee, mine with cream and one sugar and his with two sugars and more cream, his more frothy.

I smile as I hear heavy footsteps and soon strong arms around my waist.

“Sleep okay?” He asks, leaving over to kiss my jaw and then taking his coffee, looking down at me with tired eyes.

“Yeah.. I did.. you?” I say softly, looking up at him, feeling fuzzy.

He nods.

“Somewhat..”

I get on my tiptoes and kiss his lips.

“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me..” I say with a small smile and my hands finding in his shoulders.

He smiles and scratches his neck.

“You.. too..” he clears his throat and kisses my forehead.

“You should be more quiet, josh..” I smile and his eyes flick to confusion to shock to embarrassment.

Ranking Tommy’s Podcasts.

My ranking of Tommy’s podcast appearances. Just my personal preferences. xD

1- Eboys Podcast. It’s the first one he did so it’s extra special for me. But also the guys on it had a real understanding of streaming and youtube so were really able to engage with Tommy on a lot of good topics and had actually watched some Dream SMP stuff. The earlier look at Tommy while he was still getting used to his level of fame and going to college etc is great too. They were really nice and instantly hit a great dynamic.

2- Impaulsive. Controversial choice maybe xD? It helps that this one is really long (more is better!) and also they pushed Tommy for genuinely hard questions and it came with some cool insights showing his more sensible side. Tommy was on excellent form as much as some of the questions seemed a little much and they were sometimes talking around each other. That just heightened my enjoyment of it for some reason. xD

3 Colin and Samir’s interview. This is recent so its fresh in my mind. I might actually change my mind and rank it above impaulsive? Genuinely good to hear Tommy getting to discuss his opinions on youtube and the platform in depth. This one is very focused on the topic of youtube and content creation but it’s a satisfying talk all the same.

4 What’s Good podcast. Tommy talking to Miniminter is a rare gem. It’s fun and charming and you got that good contrast of someone who grew really quickly as part of the Sidemen who was now more chilled out about youtube after having done it for years and was now in a stable place to Tommy who’s still really in the game of trying to grow. The topics themselves were less meorable - I believe Tommy had been on a lot of podcasts around this time so there’s less new topics but still excellent vibes.

5 The Cutting corner. Now that’s where it gets technical. Podcast where Tommy can talk about being an editor and the making of his youtube vids and such. It’s a podcast where his editor Larry was on the week before, his other editor Elodie the week before that and yeah it’s the podcast where Tommy gets to nerd out about fonts for ten minutes. Really good if you’re fascinated by editing though more niche. Host is excellent.

6 Banter. This was a hard one to place. It’s only 30 minutes and its Tommy chatting to Karl and Sapnap. Very cool but less special as it’s more like friends catching up with each other. Also its only 30 minutes. I like my podcasts long.

7 Chuckle Sandwich Podcast. Schlatt, Slimecicle and Ted Nivison - it feels like this one should’ve been great but I deducted a lot of points for them spending way too long talking about body spray. Ugh. Mostly pretty alright though, just I don’t think the subjects were that great.

8 Happy Hour Podcast. Alright but so many bland questions. Like why so long talking about sandwiches and explaining what minecraft was and trying to start beef with KSI? I don’t think the hosts quite realised Tommy’s level of fame at that time as clickbait drama was totally unneeded for views. xD Some good moments still as Tommy was funny but a bit weaker.

lmao i remember when people called me a prude and boring for not liking them yet here they are exposing themselves for how sh!tty they truly are. a bunch of childish, racist pigs. the lot of them.

these absolute neeks r pushing thirty but don't realise that having a giggle at the casual use of a slur isn't okay? not while filming the video, not while editting and not while releasing.

if a bunch of middle-aged british roadmen r using that word at any point, its not about ignorance. they all would have known. raised in the shitty part of london with a considerably large brown community and you don't know that word is a slur?? it's carelessness. careless that they have displayed time and time again whether it be the way they talk to/about women, the LGBTQIA+ community or literally any other marginalised groups. they have ALWAYS been like this.

yh i applaud my younger self for hating these weirdos so strongly and in turn making fun of everyone that idolised them.

this sounds horrible but i truly mean it when i say that i wish every single one of them the very worst in their careers. crude, unfunny and obnoxious. ruined a whole generation of teenagers and to put the cherry on the cake, revived a slur that had largely been buried. great job, boys (!) ur absolutely nothing like team 10 (!)

You are my favorite blogger ate charm! I like how you’re starting to show your personality. love the idea of just talking instead of having a topic in mind. I think that’ll be more fun and natural for you. Also like the idea of answering different questions at the end. I always wanted advice but was afraid my questions wouldn’t make a certain category. I'm getting distracted by you coming here again. I had a 5-day long weekend and it's supposed to be my chance to be productive with my thesis and yet I only finished the concepts and methods of my paper. I just find myself scrolling your blog, then to Instagram. My Production Problems during the process

Hello everyone, welcome back my blog and today I will be talking about my production problems that I faced during my music video.

My production Process has a lot of challenges and problems involved in my music video. There were problems both technical and conceptual which made things a lot harder for me to cope with my work.

Choosing my coursework- The first problem I had was the song I was going to choose. I first thought of doing a documentary which I had no clue about. I did not know how to shoot a documentary. My teacher suggested I do it as she was very familiar with it and she said it will be fun. I researched about it and I soon knew it was not for me as I had zero knowledge about the coursework. My next option was a music video and once I saw that, the first thing strikes to me was the KSI song called "Not Over Yet". I heard the song many times and I automatically got a story behind it which made it easier for me to start working on my project.

Actors- I was looking for an actor to shoot my film. I wanted to shoot my movie and have an actor perform such a diverse role. Soon, I could not find the perfect one as everyone was busy and they did not suit the role. y time was running out and I requested my teacher if I could act and ask my friends to shoot the video. She agreed and wanted me to act. I was excited to act in this story and I knew the role really well which made it easier and more efficient.

Costumes- I did not use as many costumes in my music video and I had limited clothes to wear for my shoot. It was fine initially as the costumes did not really mean much to me but it soon hit hard when my plan was coming together. I used the sports clothes that were available in my closet and I managed it very well using those.

Time-consuming- My friends were good at taking shots as they made several shots that were not told but still made sense. They took a variety of shots and this made my final product look even better. However, I spent way too much time on getting the best shot and I should have planned better as the natural lighting did not do its job. I had to wait for the perfect shot to come so it will be appealing for the audience to view my final product.

Finally, editing. I wasted one entire day of editing because my laptop did not support my editing software and this was a huge problem in my coursework. I was so happy that my production went as planned and I did not want this to happen. I called my friends to see if I could use their desktops for my coursework. Luckily there was a friend of mine who helped me use their desktop and helped me with the edits. He was very familiar with my song and my story and gave me ideas to place my work accordingly. This was very helpful because he was super patient and he was aware that the final product would be a banger. This was my first time editing my music video and it was fun as I learnt a lot of the software and I was very please how my work was forming.

Commentary YouTuber Pinely (notable for, for example, The MrBeast-ification of Youtube), made a new video called Logan Paul's Consumerist Dystopia which I felt kinda :/ ... about, so I wanted to talk about it here.

The video is essentially about PRIME, the energy sports drink released by Logan Paul and KSI in Jan 2022. In it, Pinely discusses a number of points that criticize Prime, including how the taste is not as good as one might be led to believe, the fact that there has been a frenzy of purchasing of the drink (like lineups and increased resale value), and the fact that the ads for the drink can be quite embedded. But I watched it and don’t think the video lived up to its claims of identifying a consumerist dystopia, and certainly not one that Logan Paul created.

I say this firstly because, dystopia is a strong word for what is happening with Prime, and secondly because, the idea that Logan Paul created a consumerist dystopia (as opposed to him merely participating in an advertising campaign) makes little sense.

Let’s take each points one by one:

The title. Logan Paul’s consumerist dystopia. He didn’t say “Logan Paul and KSI’s consumerist dystopia”, or more generally, “YouTube’s consumerist dystopia.” He alleged, in the title, that Logan Paul specifically had done something to create a dystopia (with Prime) - that’s a high bar of proof to clear. And imo, the video doesn’t clear it. Instead of giving evidence of Logan Paul masterminding a concerted plan to benefit from consumerism, as the thumbnail might suggest, the video only shows clips of Logan... advertising Prime. We see him walking around some backstage area presenting the launch of the drink, walking through a grocery store where they stock Prime, and doing his job as a promoter of a product he has launched, bigging it up to the camera. Nothing new, nothing not seen in regular commercials on TV. Hardly evidence of him creating a consumerist dystopia. But with commentary and some really brutal editing (Pinely cuts video of Logan advertising Prime with a black-and-white tv commercial), Pinely tries to equate Logan’s quite average pandering of a sports drink to the camera as evidence of his crafting of a consumerist horrorscape (this term is used here because I can’t keep saying dystopia) akin to the Truman Show. In my opinion it’s exaggeration. The worst Pinely can say about Logan’s promotion of Prime is that possibly the love and friendship that is used by Logan and KSI to promote Prime is not genuine. (Maybe they’re not actually good friends). But then Pinely himself admits he doesn’t know whether they’re friends at all, and that it doesn’t matter- they’re business partners, and they’re promoting a drink. So if it doesn’t matter, and Logan Paul did simply promoted his product, why title it Logan Paul’s consumerist dystopia? It’s clickbait at best, and at worst, it’s selectively biased - it purposefully leaves KSI out of the title because KSI, at the moment of writing, is seen in a more favorable light than Logan Paul (and people might be quicker to realize that advertising Prime is not the same as creating a dystopia because KSI is seen as quite ‘hardworking’ broadly speaking, and deserving of his success).

The public reaction. Perhaps the most memorable clips of the video are of the public, where shots are shown of people rushing stores to buy Prime or buying so much at once the drinks in total retail for ~$1000. One couple appeared to pay $300 for (or at least spend that much to get) three bottles of Prime, a value of ~$90, a practice KSI has discouraged. However, instead of the public’s reaction being evidence of consumerism (defined in this context as “The situation in which too much attention is given to buying and owning things”.), all Pinely has managed to show, in my opinion, is evidence that Prime is a trending product. In 1996, it was Tickle Me Elmo, in 2007 it was the Wii, sometimes it’s concert tickets of a popular musician, this time it’s Prime. The crowds were not driven by materialism, the love of having lots of stuff, they were driven by a simple desire to try Prime or support Logan Paul/KSI through Prime combined with a response to scarcity. In other words, desire for a product, even a strong desire, (or strong sales), does not immediately equal consumerism (more akin to the love of buying and having a lot of stuff, for its own sake). What the video shows is regular people showing their support for YouTubers in their latest merch drop or jumping on the bandwagon of trying to get a taste of an item made rare by the number of people who want it. Nothing more.

(****I discussed this with someone, who pushed back strongly on this point that a large group of people wanting something purported to be overvalued /is/ evidence of consumerism, and I want to stress here that just because /some people/ wouldn’t have paid as much for Prime doesn’t mean that it is not right for /other people/ to strongly desire the product and even be willing to pay scalped prices for it- the fact that they are being scalped is not their fault, it’s the fault of those who recognize the demand and upsell the product****)

The advertisement. Pinely argues that Prime gets outsized amounts of free advertising compared to its taste (as distinguished from the quality of the product with respect to its ability to hydrate). Prime is an energy drink that doesn’t taste particularly good, if Pinely and Gordon Ramsey are to be believed. Not bad, but... not good either, or at least not as good as the claims made in the advertising done by other YouTubers. This advertising is often unpaid and can be over-the-top, designed to grab the viewer’s attention to the point where, instead of discussion about Prime having a spot in the middle of the video somewhere as a sponsor, the drink can be the entire point of the video, amounting to something like a 9-minute ad, in the case of (Mr. Beast adjacent) Matthew Beem, complete with stunts like jumping into the Thames river (quite unsafe, as Pinely points out). However, the reason for this behavior is explained within the video, again by Pinely himself: it is not evidence of a consumerist dystopia, they are simply YouTube creators trying to pay the bills, (or, more generously, individuals trying to make money) and they know that jumping on trends accomplishes this by getting views. If the trend was giving money away, they would do it. If the trend was doing a ‘largest of’ or ‘biggest of’ video, they would do that. At that moment in time, Prime was the trend, and to piggy-back on the success of KSI and Logan Paul, Matthew Beem made a video that was completely consistent with his over-the-top style, with countless others providing reviews for the same reasons (content and views). A YouTuber making a video is hardly news, and Pinely admits that he “Doesn’t blame them” [those who jump on trends] for doing it, so... why the alarmist references to a dystopia? And how does another YouTuber (Matthew Beem) independently deciding to create a video to jump on a bandwagon for free have anything to do with Logan Paul?

TLDR; The Pinely video was framed as a type of negative review on Logan Paul and consumerism, but it didn’t provide much evidence of an issue separate from the public’s general excitement about Prime or larger than Logan Paul advertising a product. Nevertheless, the video boasted a thumbnail of a puppetmaster Logan and a title referencing a ‘consumerist dystopia.’ While generally, clips of intense reactions of the public and possibly stretched truth about the taste of Prime were shown, I think the video’s framing might need tweaking or it might not amount to much more than Pinely’s feelings that Prime was getting so much hype.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 13/08/2022 (KSI/Tom Grennan, Joel Corry/Becky Hill, DJ Khaled/Drake/Lil Baby)

It’s the sixth week at #1 for “Afraid to Feel” by LF SYSTEM, but we have a semi-busy week elsewhere on the chart so welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!

Rundown

As always, we start with the notable dropouts – songs exiting the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. This week, that includes “The 30th” by Billie Eilish, “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, “Mixed Emotions” by Chase & Status, “Music for a Sushi Restaurant” by Harry Styles, “Something to Someone” by Dermot Kennedy, “First Class” by Jack Harlow and finally, “Baby” by Aitch and Ashanti. There are some notable losses here, which is a given considering the debuts, but I can’t say I have strong opinions on most of them so I welcome the new wave of hits that should come over the Autumn.

In terms of notable gains and returns, we have “KU LO SA – A COLORS SHOW” by Oxlade returning to a new peak of #72 as well as a really minimal tray of gains for “Shivers” by Ed Sheeran of all songs at #50, “Under the Influence” by Chris Brown at #38 – yikes, “Ferrari” by James Hype and Miggy Dela Rosa at #17, “Stay with Me” by Calvin Harris, Justin Timberlake, Halsey and Pharrell Williams at #13 thanks to the album, and two new entries within the top 10, at least those that were already on the chart. Sure, “Late Night Talking” by Harry Styles returning to the top 10 at #8 could have been expected, but it did surprise me to see that “B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)” by Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal is seeing a lot of streaming success at #10, especially for two practically unknown artists and a five-minute song. The radio edit might be helping, but it’s impressive regardless.

There won’t be an Off the Charts section this week because, well, nothing released in the past week that I cared about besides YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Calvin Harris (who impacted the chart this week), so Youthful Male Unlikely to Return to Poverty will be covered next week in what will probably be a really rap-focal set of projects now that I think about it. This week’s UK Singles Chart top five consists of “Doja” by Central Cee at #5, “Not Over Yet” by KSI featuring Tom Grennan debuting at #4 (we’ll get to it), “Green Green Grass” by George Ezra at #3, “BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyoncé at #2 and of course, “Afraid to Feel” at the very top. Now to get straight into the new arrivals, I suppose...

#71 – “Obsessed” – Calvin Harris, Charlie Puth and Shenseea

I think it’s pretty telling that on the week of album release, “Potion” with Dua Lipa and Young Thug fell to #68. Sure, you can blame ACR but I don’t think it can be defined that Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 hit with so much lesser of an impact than the first instalment and sadly, I think I can partially chalk it up to the album being a lot worse. Sure, it has its moments like the relaxing “Day One” with Pharrell Williams and Pusha T, and my favourite track, the string-inflected bop that is “New to You” with Normani, Tinashe and Offset but they are few and far between. In an attempt to make music that was languid and calming, Harris made some of the stodgiest, mishandled attempts at the funk or disco pop sound in recent years, with mixing that functions as a distraction to whatever “chill vibe” it’s trying to convey. Since the charts love me and my opinions, we see what is my personal least favourite track on the entire album charting, with a thin disco groove that feels copy-and-pasted from any one of the other tracks on the album, punctuated by flat percussion and sound effects that desperately cling onto any interest I could have in what really is a rote, generic track. Charlie Puth here is demanding his love interest is clingy, and since Puth often plays the douchebag, it would work for him if he either had more input onto the production to at least make this sound a bit less stiff, or he didn’t have to sing the obnoxious chorus melody which a really odd, unflattering vocal tone and a lethargic delivery. Shenseea is here to mostly brag and distract from the actual narrative or topic of the song and it’s not a terrible verse but definitely feels tacked-on, especially being the first verse so not much is developed in terms of an actual song structure from the get-go. Puth spends most of his time on the track in this awkward, pitch-shifted lower register that sounds really out of his comfort zone, and doesn’t exactly make his absurdly desperate lyrics any more charming. I don’t mind either Puth or Shenseea in general, and it’s not like they’re doing much to help their case, but they did deserve better than this, and really, we deserved better from Calvin Harris as a whole on this album, because it’s a mess.

#63 – “Matilda” – Harry Styles

We have a decently-sized amount of new arrivals but it is really a bit of a random assortment of tracks. Sometimes these episodes will inadvertently have genres or themes attached because of what ends up charting but there’s not really a recurring theme for whatever we have on our plates this week. This is the Harry Styles track that kicked out “Music for a Sushi Restaurant” as the third best-performing and I’m pretty glad because this is pretty much the only song I liked off of that album. In comparison to the rest of the album, Harry’s songwriting is less condescending as he respects the boundaries of this woman who has had a rough upbringing at home and would indeed find it a release to “throw a party” with people that she actually cares about rather than her family. I understand the appeal, because, well, teenage girls want to hear their scrunkly say that their family who they hate doesn’t actually matter in the long run, but it does hit on a broader note with Styles’ mostly acoustic accompaniment as he reassures that “home is where the heart is” mentality that actually does ring true and kind of resonates for me, so, yeah, it works. It’s simple, kind of basic and definitely doesn’t have the gripping moments that I’d usually like a ballad to have but for what it is, I can see it lasting.

#53 – “Bad Decisions” – benny blanco, BTS and Snoop Dogg

...Huh? Well, it’s slightly less surprising if you know some more of what these artists have been doing the past decade. The producer benny blanco has been spending the 2010s writing and producing pop smashes for everyone under the Sun, especially with his right-hand Norwegian Cashmere Cat, BTS have never shied away from either Western producers or hip hop, as they have rappers in the group and have opened their arms to guests like Nicki Minaj, Desiigner and Juice WRLD in the past. The most surprising here would be Snoop and, besides the fact that he’d do a feature for anybody, he’s also no stranger to K-pop, collaborating with PSY on 2014’s “Hangover” and appearing with MONSTA X on The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run soundtrack. Expectedly, the song is entirely in English, which has never been BTS’ comfort zone, and it goes for the typically inoffensive stodgy disco-funk we got from “Dynamite” and “Butter”. The BTS members get to trade vocals, especially on the verses, and some of the harmonies are nice, but it’s clearly not written for four vocalists, especially with those awkward post-chorus flourishes. Snoop doesn’t rap at all really here, going instead for a staccato, manipulated singing flow alongside borderline comical ad-libs. I don’t think BTS are convincingly sexy – and really neither is Snoop nowadays – and I think it doesn’t play nearly into the goofiness that this song could have easily lent into to work. As is, it’s just a bore, and another example of the BTS mismanagement when it comes to the songwriters and producers who are trying to help their chances in English-speaking territories. This sound just isn’t really a natural fit for them.

#46 – “Happiness” – The 1975

Okay, so unlike the lead single, Matthew Healy plays it safe in the lyrical department here. He probably included all the buzz words as a “satirical social experiment” or something else false and pretentious, just so you could buy into the idea that they’re a really deep band and therefore care about this single, which is pretty generic and accessible with very little attempt at Healy’s sarcastic, unlikeable social messaging. If you think I’m complaining, that’s just because it’s The 1975 and I will complain about this band for as long as possible when really, it’s for the better. Generic love songs are this band’s only way to make me care for them, so when they put out a song where Healy is just head over heels for some girl, I can kind of respect it more than the rest of the garbage they put out. It’s also a pretty good song, albeit kind of a weird one as the disco groove finds itself plastered in chopped-up vocal fragments during the intro that create a really sampledelia-esque atmosphere against the saxophone that sounds really unique to hear on the pop charts at least. The song is essentially Healy being desperate for the attention and love of this woman, who’s so “insatiable” that it gives him a false sense of confidence. The angle of framing is a tad icky when he starts to tell her to “grow up” on the chorus but I can write that off as an ad-lib considering how improvisational the song feels, with Healy’s meandering melodies and repetitious platitudes, the lack of focus on the “chorus” and the awkward drum fills before the first of its maddening refrains. With that said, it’s an incredibly layered song but doesn’t lose the freer element of its improvisation, with loops that probably shouldn’t work, random interview chatter and the several abrupt sax solos that just kind of get cut off or trail into nowhere after coming in so explosively. It’s far from perfect, but also far from conventional, and I can respect that. Good song.

#31 – “Hold This” – HStikkytokky and J Fado

Now what in the fresh Hell is this? As far as I can tell, these guys are TikTok personalities and this song kind of went viral using the unfittingly tense strings and blocky house beat, as well as these two guys trying to rap. Now, I can’t say this beat is awful or anything, but I feel like someone with actual personality would make it sound much better, since both HStikkytokky and J Fado embarrass themselves trying to sound either collected or menacing by being absolute robots, devoid of any charisma as they flex about getting girls or whatever, and really, who is this for? Tom Zanetti fans? Do they exist? This is just a waste of time and given this is charting thanks to virality, I doubt it lasts but knowing how again, the charts loves me and my opinions, this’ll get a Bad Boy Chiller Crew remix and be #1 by September.

#27 – “Can’t Be Us” – Headie One, Abra Cadabra and Bandokay

Headie One’s probably one of my favourites from the UK drill scene, but he has been inconsistent so I’m glad that this (mostly) works. The childish sample is nothing new and may be a bit too tense and horror-sounding for a song that’s mostly just flexing, but it’s pretty watered-down by the time the tighter drill percussion and booming 808s hit, which end up sounding muddy since it and the kick don’t really mesh... it works for me, though, it adds a good amount of grit to a song that’s otherwise a tad more chill in comparison to other drill tracks. Headie sounds really effortless in a great way with his rambling flow, with some pretty decent rhyme schemes and tight couplets in his verse, as well as a catchy hook. Where I’d prefer this to go is that the percussion drops out and the intensity rises as Headie delivers a vicious second verse: that’s where these more on-edge instead of overtly violent drill – or even trap – tracks should pretty much always go in my opinion... but instead we get lacklustre features from Abra Cadabra and Bandokay. I like Cadabra’s smokier vocal tone, but his flow just isn’t nearly as smooth as Headie and his awkward, half-mumbled attempt at Auto-Tuned crooning sounds terribly awkward in the middle of his verse. Bandokay starts his verse by saying that he feels like Kodak Black, so I basically automatically lose interest and think about what could have been with either no features or rappers that could have really killed this. It’s begging for a remix, but as is, it’s still okay.

#21 – “STAYING ALIVE” – DJ Khaled featuring Drake and Lil Baby

The video for this song is needlessly extravagant, almost 10 minutes long and plays out as this cringeworthy medical drama parody that looks like it costs a hell of a lot more than this song did to make. DJ Khaled blew the budget on three things: the video, Drake and the Bee Gees interpolation of all things because, yes, for whatever reason, Drake sings “Stayin’ Alive” on the second half of the chorus for no reason, tangentially relating it to how he overcomes haters. The vocal mixing for both Drake and Baby is inconsistent and just sharply bad most of the time, and it sounds really damn cheap over this screechy lead melody and terribly mastered bass. I don’t know how much money DJ Khaled, Drake and Lil Baby have access to but it sounds like they paid someone to make this sound as terribly as possible. Drake says nothing as usual, Lil Baby flexes and tries to make “pushing P” a thing as if that worked out well for Gunna, and DJ Khaled quite literally does nothing but yell a couple sentences at the start. This is just a pathetic song, why it exists and can be called “finished” let alone why it was released as a single baffles me. Was splurging out for the Bee Gees sample worth it, Khaled?

#20 – “HISTORY” – Joel Corry and Becky Hill

Now it’s easy to say that we’ve been here before, and that this will be yet another vaguely 90s house song that sticks around for way too long and is complete radio filler with little to no unique flavour in the sound design and a vocal performance devoid of personality, manufactured to just pop out a single that vaguely goes in a club or in the car. All of that is true, but I actually kind of like this song. Lyrically, it’s nothing special and I’m not sure if I like the sentiment of sticking with someone despite an obviously toxic relationship, but I can get why someone would feel this way and it’s sold with a striking conviction that actually kind of works for me. Hill has a bit more rasp here, with a kind of unexpected F-bomb, and whilst the build-up is pretty rote, I really like the drop which feels a bit more staccato in its stabs of synth. The rising intensity of the strings in the pre-chorus is pretty well done, feeling like a really grandiose swoop, and the drop for once isn’t some bassy anti-climactic garbage, so I can appreciate this a lot more than Corry’s other productions. Maybe with the pitch-shifted vocals on the post-chorus and stabbing, obnoxious synthwork, it’s just that little bit closer to being future bass, which is basically how I end up registering if I like EDM-pop or not. That’s awfully shallow, sure, but as is the song itself so I don’t really have many complaints here.

#4 – “Not Over Yet” – KSI featuring Tom Grennan

So I’m pretty sure this song exists primarily to promote a boxing match, which is pretty inseparable from the song considering that it’s in the cover art. Regardless, the song sounds just like a promotional bonus anyway, and whilst KSI is getting to be a better singer, his vocal production that showers him in Auto-Tune and awkwardly-placed vocal layers and harmonies with Grennan on the chorus whilst leaving him unnecessarily dry on the verses is really not doing him any wonders. Sure, there’s a drum and bass beat but it’s not like it hits with any real intensity and the warping, fuzzy bass that comes with this kind of breakbeat track just feels completely misused, considering that there aren’t any stakes to this song to begin with. I really wish this was a rock song, to be completely honest, because it would at least add some raucous grit to this painless melodrama and maybe up the stakes enough, but in a breakup anthem with no second side of the story that isn’t just vague platitudes from either singer and a “Wonderwall”-ass outro, what stakes are there to be made? It’s just a flaccid, trend-hopping pop tune that’s this high because of sales, and I can only hope it doesn’t last, even if really it’s basically inoffensive.

Conclusion

This was a pretty odd few songs but I’m going to be incredibly out of character and give my two least favourite white boys the throne here. Best of the Week goes to “Happiness” by The 1975 and “Matilda” by Harry Styles gets the Honourable Mention. Worst of the Week is absolutely going to Calvin Harris, Charlie Puth and Shenseea for “Obsessed” though HStikkytokky and J Fado in whatever the Hell “Hold This” is aren’t trailing far behind with the Dishonourable Mention. I don’t know how much of this will last, given that I can expect some quieter weeks still, but for now, thank you for reading and I’ll see you next week!
