So my friends love me and put together a whole weekend oneshot ttrpg game with sentient mechas linked to their pilots and parasitic nano machines JUST FOR ME for my birthday and it RULED and played out exactly like an anime episode and I quickly put together a guy to be the pilot I was playing and here he is and he had the worst day ever but now he's a robot pilot and that's pretty cool

One of my favorite things about UC Gundam is that it is genuinely extremely weird.

Like, mecha as a genre is already a hard sell to people who aren't already into it or things like it. Gundam as a franchise is even more of a hard sell because it has a 45 year reputation of being a series for model building grognards. And as the final nail in the coffin, the original show being from 1979 has killed any desire to watch it in many, many people that I have recommended it to.

But if you actually get past all the hurdles and watch it, you have a show about a guy in a stupid helmet who is heavily implied to be fucking his twink boyfriend (who he kills), who then promptly develops a homoerotic rivalry with another guy before changing his name to Four Vaginas in the sequel. And he's not even the main character.

True believers will tell you it's peak fiction. And that's me. I'm a true believer.

SPOILERS FOR ULTRAMAN:RISING

i know people have been talking about it but i’m going to lose my mind if i don’t say anything. the new ultraman:rising movie is SO SO GOOD. SOOOO GOOD. i’m genuinely losing my shit because i didn’t expect it at all. i was just looking for something to watch with my sisters. imagine my surprise when we played it and it was more emotional than i thought it would be. first of all: the reluctant father trope is gonna get me EVERYTIMEEE. and they did it so well. in fact i think it’s my favorite portrayal of the trope so far. ken had me tense as hell for the first bit bc i wanted to see how they were gonna redeem him, but honestly, the pacing and character development was amazing. watching him progress felt natural, and i absolutely adored seeing how emi made him a better person.

the scene when he met her for the first time and the clouds cleared?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? he loved her from the moment he met her. and i love love loveddddd that he actually treated her like his daughter. he called her baby, he called himself her dad, he played with her, he fed and washed her, etc etc. i feel like it’s very common to see the father figure still keep that distance, especially when they’re not raising a human, but for the most part, he went all in. you couldn’t tell that man he didn’t birth her! i so badly want to see more of them together, even if it’s just a mini series of him raising her on kaiju island. she impacted every area of his life. he needed her just as much as she needed him.

dr. onda did drive me insane, but i did feel for him just a little bit. i understand why he let his vengeance fuel him. also maybe i’m overthinking it, but i like the parallel of him and ken with their sunglasses. they both hide their sadness, grief, and vulnerability with them. i think it’s neat that they know they can’t hide how their eyes express their feelings.

ultradad and mecha gigantron messed me UP. i was so scared his dad would actually die, but i was also very happy to see gigantron was actually alive. she was very valid in attacking the kdf for stealing her baby!! i hope they can fix mina because emi needs her grandmas. every single scene of ken and emi nearly brought me to tears. this movie was made with so much love. i heard it took 25 years for them to get this movie actually approved and going, so congrats to shannon tindle for having a vision and seeing it through!! thank you for sharing it with the world because it’s easily one of my favorite movies of the year. i hope the end credit scene actually leads to more of this universe, because this movie has truly blown me away.

but would korra be really able to defeat azula

I assume this is related to my post from yesterday about Korra not getting fair fights with her villains because they knew she could beat them all?

And, yes. If Korra and Azula were to fight, Korra would win 100%. I love Azula, she is my favorite villain on both shows and one of my favorite characters overall. Azula is a firebending prodigy and very intelligent, yeah. She presented the first actual threat for the Gaang. She can bend lightning and is very powerful. We know she was already a master by the time she was 14.

Korra could bend three elements by age 4 or 5 and had mastered those three elements by the time she was 17. It took her about 12 years or so. Assuming it took her 3 or 4 years to master each element, that means she mastered waterbending before she turned 10 years old, which turns her into the youngest known bending master in the show, younger than 12yo Aang and 11yo Jinora. So, just like Azula, she is a bending prodigy. She's older than Azula as well, more experienced too, has fought villains of Azula's level or higher. Azula would give a good fight but yeah, no way she could win a 1v1 against Korra, and I'm not talking about end of the show Korra; maybe Book 1 Korra could make a mistake and Azula could have a chance, against Book 3 Korra she'd lose. Azula is a good tactician, but Korra —unlike people who haven't paid attention to the show and think she's a brainless brute— is a smart fighter as well, and she's more assertive than Aang, who Azula never truly defeated, by the way, and who could have most likely defeated Azula with just Airbending if he was more into aggression and less defensive and evasive. You could argue that Azula could throw lightning at Korra, but Korra is faster than Azula, and tbh could just block it just like Katara did; unless Azula attacked her in the back and by surprise like she did with Aang, that wouldn't work either.

In a fair fight, Korra could probably beat Azula just with water; her waterbending skills and raw power are insane. She once lifted a river and threw it at a giant mecha with enough force to make it stumble before freezing said waters and trapping it. Without a full moon or a moon at all, actually, because it was in plain daylight, when waterbenders are weaker. Without the Avatar State, that's the biggest feat of waterbending in both shows, and it's a bigger feat than Azula's biggest feat at firebending. As an Azula lover, sorry but no, she's not winning this lmao.

I went to read Ratio's messages again and:

He encourages Stelle to enroll on Veritas Prime, a.k.a his very own alma mater, for REALSIES. Not only that, but:

And that's kinda surprising, in a good way. Like, I know Ratio isn't a condescending prick that thinks himself above others (or, well... There's a lot more to him than the condescension, is what I mean to say), but he looked at Stelle and saw potential in her. Veritas Ratio, the man who'd rather wear a fucking plaster head in front of his students because he's allergic to dumbassery, looked at Stelle, our resident unhinged raccoon, and saw enough potential to personally encourage and oversee her pursuit of knowledge.

Look at this! He's genuinely interested in her worldview and her opinions! He doesn't consider a waste of time to discuss topics with her! He spent the entirety of this message batch simulating a debate with her and sharing knowledge on the subject!

Again, it's not like I thought Ratio was incapable of any of this, but I never imagined that he'd be like that with the Trailblazer either. It's surprising, but in a very pleasant way? Like, "wow, I wasn't expecting this dynamic to be so genuine but it is and I like it". Honestly, I'll never not be impressed by Ratio and his particular ways of showcasing kindness to others/seeking companionship. He's such a compelling character.

Oh, and this is my favorite message batch of his. He feels tired by the monotony of his projects and he decides to relax by... Humoring Stelle? He goes and says "Hey, think of something you want and I'll make up a project" and Stelle, huge dork that she is, goes "Make me a cool weapon!" and "Make the Express move forever!" and he just... Does it? Sends a project of transforming the Express into a mecha?? Says he wants to disassemble the Express to figure it out???

It feels like I'm rambling for nothing but this is truly disarming to me. It's easy to dismiss Stelle as a goofball (and she very much IS a goofball) but Ratio actually takes her seriously and seeks to nurture her progress. Beyond that, he honestly likes to entertain her ideas and thinks that hearing her out is a positive thing.

If I had to describe their relationship, I'd say it's all very cute, in a pure and wholesome way, and I cannot believe I'm using these words to describe Veritas freaking Ratio out of all characters. This gotta be a new kind of brainworm.

may I ask about your thinking process when drawing mecha?? you're amazing at it and that's fascinating

oh yes you absolutely may ask I would love to talk about it

the main thing I consider is detail. it's all detail, really. how and where to put it, and how to not drive myself crazy drawing it, because i like my machines detailed as fuck sometimes.

I first decide on how complex i want my robot to be. the term i'd use for it is greebling- it doesn't have to make too much sense, but it needs to look visually interesting, and its easier to do if I know what I'm aiming for. I find that the key to mechas and robots is a good balance of very detailed, unified, cluttered components and bigger, less intricate plating. take the beetle mecha, for example.

I wanted this one to be pretty damn complex. very greebled. the areas of black wiring provide dense patches of unified detail, while its carapace is less intricate but utilizes sparse details, layering, and differences in color to keep up the visual interest. its got dimension. its got things to focus on. its got shit going on all over the place but in different ways so that some things stand out more than others. there's also enough variation in these sorts of designs to keep me interested in the drawing process for a long while instead of getting bored or exhausted, which is why I love drawing mechs so much.

There are also these two iterators i drew a while back, which are less complex, but are good examples of how i like to detail plating/shells.

I really, really enjoy considering how the different pieces will fit together, and how to make sure one singular component doesn't look too flat or too greebled for what I'm going for. my favorite techniques for this are Give That Fucker Some Tubes and Add Some Geometric Lines To That Bad Boy.

(my warhammer characters are pretty good examples of variations in my greebling techniques.)

Gildedguy and the Dragon of Mar - Mar character thoughts

First off, what a HELL of a goddamn story. Easily my new favorite Gildedguy animation. it's much more emotionally grounded and serious than all of his previous ones have been, combined, even with that absolute gut punch of a third act.

So, go watch it first.

That being said, I have a lot of thoughts on Mar as a character and what he means to me. They'll be under the cut, so SPOILERS BELOW if you haven't watched the animation.

Starting off, I have to say a lot of these thoughts have been kickstarted by my buddy @malelovemail. Conversation with others in the sense of this story has helped build up my own thoughts on the animation and of this character.

That being said,

This guy. This fucking man.

To put it shortly, he is an allegory for abuse, isolation, and resignation.

Throughout the animation, you can see him refusing help - you can see him keeping to himself, even with him inviting gildedguy into his home. He recoils from the sight of himself in reflections. That, for one, is a sign of someone who has done something horrible- and knows what he's done.

And that leads into the Dragon, which so delightfully mislead us into believing it was something he was trying to hide. No, it's something much more nuanced than that. The dragon is a defense mechanism.

Not once does Mar try to hide the dragon, he doesn't keep it away from Gildedguy or anyone else. The first thing his body goes to when he feels stressed- when he is in pain- is to turn into the dragon. It's a relapse into horrible and violent behaviors because he can't be forced to come to terms with who or what he is.

Throughout the entire story, Gildedguy tries to help mar. he tries to pull him out of the abuse cycle. He hides the stellapen when he sees it brings mar pain, he tries to help him out of the nerve throne inside of the dragon. Even when it comes time to fight the dragon in Gilded Mecha form, he is trying to HELP HIM. After the dragon is dead, he tries to help him. But every time, he gets turned away. Mar sees what he is in the eyes of the people, he refuses to attempt to overcome it. He refuses to accept what he's done. He just falls further into his violence and lets his dragon hurt more and more people.

In the end, gildedguy resigns himself to the fact that he cannot save this man, because Mar does not want to be saved. When Mar dies, he just watches it happen. He doesn't stop Sable. He doesn't help him up.

He just watches.

Something I find very interesting is that the first thing mar does when the dragon dies and the fight is over is mourn it, and pay respects. he pays no attention to anybody else. he doesn't care about them. To him the dragon, his defense mechanism and his output for violence, has been his only companion in life for as long as he can remember.

This was never going to be a story with a happy ending, because Mar refused to accept one for himself. And the people he's hurt refused to accept that too.

Sable is an interesting character in the context of both the story, and the allegory that Mar represents. She is shown worshiping the dragon at the start of the story, playing in gold while inside the dragon, and overall being disconnected from the plot. But she's a good representation of what you can ignore in someone you admire while they hurt other people, until you come face to face with what it is they've done.

And in the end, she becomes disillusioned from all that has happened, because of the sight of everything the dragon has done to everyone else.

Sable was the best choice to end Mar's life as opposed to Gildedguy. She had much more direct contact with him, she had been directly hurt by him for who knows how long.

And I feel like she's an allegory for the people that Barthimo has hurt. A sort of retribution and catharsis, seeing the one that has hurt her for so long be taken down and killed by her own hands. She was the one who could finally end Mar's reign of terror, not just the dragon he hid behind.

the mecha dragon has those distinct kind of eyelids and eyelashes (and theyre both very pretty)

diverse mix between hard (limb plating, armored(?) pelvis structure) and soft (upper-arm covers, fluid in the neck) components

background detail gives real presence to the mecha dragon

mecha dragon's purpose/implied narrative alone is really interesting

i love your artstyle so much, it checks all the boxes (cheerful colors, awesome scifi design, kinda hot, silly kobolds, detailed and articulate)
