Comes in here with a longass post hello! Been meaning to get around to illustrating some Species Headcanons @humming-fly @alagaesia-overlord and I have been cooking up! Major props to them for helping me write the script hahaha it wouldn't have been possible without them!

This is a little segment I have been wanting to try for a bit, just a nice moment to dispense lore in a fun way! I can't promise that more will be out in a necessarily timely manner, but I can promise that more will be on its way. Someday!

An idea that arose during a conversation with @nightcovefox , ended in an extended rp and in the end, it ended up shaping this monstrosity

Void Termina turned around to face Prince Fluff, frowning. This was that one angry blue guy with the big eyebrows who got his arm ripped off, right? ...That could be a problem, and not one he wanted to deal with.

In fact, Prince Fluff had already rushed forward, only to completely miss Void Termina, instead rushing beneath where he was floating. ...So that wasn't a great attempt on Prince Fluff's part. Not to mention Ester and Javez were there looking like they'd just kill him if he tried anything else. ...So what was there to do?

Well, Void Termina answered that question.

He then floated up into the air, beginning to glow brightly. There was a flash of light followed by two separate lights forming around Ester and Javez, bright enough that they couldn't even be seen through it. Everyone had to shield their eyes once more.

After flying through a rift, dealing with the dizziness that came with it and drifting through space for a bit, Magolor, Flamberge and Francisca had made it to Jambandra. They started to make their way through the halls, each having a different demeanor.

Francisca was calm and determined, Flamberge was a little more impatient and loud, floating ahead of the others, and Magolor was moving a little slower, his anxieties starting to creep up on him again.

Magolor: "...I know, but...n-now that we're here, I...f-feel this...dread...s-something b-bad is h-happening..."

Francisca: "Well, we need to be strong. For the sake of Hyness and everyone else."

Flamberge: "Yeah! And we'll back you up if things get dicey!"

Magolor: "...Th-Thanks, you two. I appreciate it."

[The focus has shifted back to Magolor, Flamberge and Francisca for a bit as they make their way through Jambandra.]

Hello, hello! Thank you for enjoying my Forgotten Land Roleswap comic, it means a lot! <3

I'm very honored that people have been asking me for tips and advice. All of this is coming from a hobbyist who draws these comics purely for fun outside of my regular day job. Some of my methods would probably deal psychic damage to a professional, LOL. But I'm more than happy to share some things I've personally learned! :)

First of all, the book, "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud ROCKS. It literally gave me a new dimension to understand the medium of comics and how it presents ideas and emotions to readers! And I haven't even had the chance to finish it all the way! I'm very happy I own a copy and I recommend having one of your own if you can, but it's archived here if you want to read it :D

I also like analyzing other comics and thinking about how they get information across to me as a reader. It's helped me learn more effective ways to visually tell a story, like what to include in a frame, how zooming in or out affects the feeling from the panel, maybe building a scene by focusing on other stuff if someone is talking a lot... etc.

ANYWAYS-! Some other tips I've learned through my personal experience-

I had to overcome a lot of negative self-talk in order to tackle a huge comic project like this and stay committed. I was a pretty severe self-deprecator for most of my life so far, and getting help has allowed me to catch myself when I'm slipping back into those habits, look in the mirror, and go, "NO, JOJO! You pour your heart into what you make and that is a wonderful thing! You are appreciated and loved and you deserve to have fun making something you are passionate about!!" Some examples of the negative self-talk I catch myself in....

"I'm a noob at writing and making a story interesting... What's the point of even trying?"

When it comes to starting a project, whether it's 2 pages or 2000 pages, is to just jump in and start! It's okay to be a little insecure or nervous about your technical art skills, writing skills, etc... But writing a "bad" scene is better than no scene- because you can always edit a "bad" scene down the line, but what can you do with nothing? Nothing!! I also put "bad" in quotation marks because I am trying to use that term less, and instead call them "early drafts." or "works in progress."

The first Roleswap scene I fleshed-out was the first Bandee boss fight, in May 2022. I made this drawing on an impulse, getting my ideas down on the page without thinking about the technical stuff like comic panel borders. I consider it like a "pilot episode" almost, haha. The final project is going to be very different from how things play out here. But it got me interested in the concept and excited to see where I could take it, and I made the decision to commit to an entire game plot's worth of AU comics!!

Also, what's the point in trying you ask? The point is to have fun! Making a fan comic in my free time means I don't have restrictions like deadlines, nobody's telling me what I can and can't write, and I can make the story as long or as short as I want! I have full control, which means the world I'm writing is all mine to create! Yes, with a fan comic there is a pre-established world with existing characters. But a universe like Kirby has enough open-ended concepts for people to take basic concepts in the world and take them to whole new levels! I think that's why there are so many amazing fan interpretations of Kirby characters and OCs. The rules are so vague, you can just make up your own a lot of the time!! And it's a wonderful exercise to learn skills for someday building an original world with all original characters from scratch! Magical!!!

I once read a two panel comic on here. I can't find it anymore but I remember most of it. First panel showed the artist looking at what they're drawing on their tablet, looking defeated and sad. "Man, I don't even know how to draw this....."The next panel was like them smiling and shrugging, I think rainbows and sparkles were coming out of their tablet, ".....I GUESS I'LL JUST HAVE TO DRAW IT SHITTY!! :D "

IF ANYONE KNOWS THIS COMIC I'M REFERENCING, PLEASE TELL ME AND I'LL LINK IT!!! Because it permanently and positively changed my brain chemistry.

No kidding, making the decision to just do my best even if it's not perfect, helped me a LOT. I was always waiting to "reach a certain level" to tackle a huge project because I felt like I'd never do it justice at my current state. Except I had been telling myself that kind of stuff for years and I still didn't start any projects!!

So the day I said, "Oh well! If I draw backgrounds shitty, then it is what it is! I'll learn from it and draw the next background a little better," Was the day I could commit fully to the project. I'll keep studying how to draw them better for my own benefit, but I won't let my skill issues stop me from even trying!

And for my limited confidence in full-color art, I solved that by making the comic in black and white with no-to-minimal shading lolol. Because I can only address one skill issue at a time before it takes me 25 years to finish this HAHAHA.

It saves a BUNCH of time to work with skill issues rather than against them! Because at least experience is gained in other ways, and who knows, maybe that new knowledge will help address the skill issues someday! So identifying your personal skill issues and deciding which one to try to grow stronger, and which one to work around, could help with big projects!

"Nobody will read this. I'm going to put months or years of my life into a dumb little thing nobody will even care about."

Learning how to draw for my own enjoyment instead of somebody else's was one of the biggest breakthroughs I ever made. Enjoying the feeling of being challenged artistically and just doing my best, even if it's not technically perfect, is the reason why I was even able to start this!

And just because someone doesn't directly like, comment or whatever on a post doesn't mean nobody saw it! I used to get really down on myself for the lack of engagement on my art on other websites.

I was a lurker for pretty much my entire teenage years and never posted my own stuff or commented much. But that didn't take away the fact that I really enjoyed the things I saw online. Those positive feelings were real to me, even when I didn't know how to articulate it in words. Granted, I grew up into a Words of Affirmation main, and I use words to tell people the positive things I think about them as much as I can! But I know not everyone prefers words to express themselves. So I think about the people that I don't know enjoy my work- that just because I don't see it doesn't mean I didn't make a positive impact on someone by sharing my stories.

THIS IS GETTING LONG-- UHHH, STORY TIPS!!

If you work best on technology, start building the story in a Notes app, or a Google Doc! If you work best with pen and paper, start a notebook and rearrange stuff as you need to!

Or if you're chaotic like me, a mix of tech and paper!! I bought a notebook with ring binding so I can remove and rearrange pages of drafts as much as I wanted to! Like here's two very rough concept pages of one Chapter 1 scene made months apart.

I'd say planning out the biggest basic plot points and then filling in between as I went was most helpful! I also have separate notes for character motivations, important story-changing events, etc... So I can have my own reference when I'm writing new scenes!

Okay this was a lot, sorry about the yapping! Hopefully it helps even a tiny bit. If you have any specific questions I'm happy to talk about my experience in the creation process! Or elaborate on anything I said above.

And finally, because I'm not a professional there are probably plenty of other tactics that could work better for some people. My ADHD probably doesn't help with the chaos of my process either, HAHA. I haven't entertained this idea much because I'm trying not to give in to making more parent OCs for my favourite characters, but once or twice I've thought of concepts like King Dedede having a big, loud, stubborn overbearing family just like him, and he's so insistent about being the self-proclaimed king of Dream Land because he wants to prove to his family he can be something as cool and prestigious as a king. I imagine him having an overbearing mother who loves him and who he has a soft spot for over all his family members but he still clashes with her. this also contrasts with my thoughts on Meta Knight either being the son of Nightmare (a headcanon I've heard) or having next to no family and no positive familial connections, possibly having a bad dad that he'd do anything to be different from (which would make a motivation for him to want to be a good father figure to someone like Kirby, which, as a Metadad fan, I'm always here for—honestly I love both Metadad and Dededad, to me they're so father figure coded). and then of course you can have a classic plot of a fic where Meta has to learn to deal with such a loud and overbearing family of his partner and he and the family eventually like each other and get along! but I'm not gonna make more parent OCs I swear I'm not doing it again guys

How many works do you have on Ao3? - 77

What is your total word count? - 296,096

What are your top 5 by kudos? - A Tale of Star-Crossed Knights, And Life Went On, Servant of the Wind, Tirnanog's Mother, Courage

What fandoms do you write for? - Right now it's mostly Fire Emblem Engage, but I've liked the Jugdral games (Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776) as well as Archanea (Shadow Dragon and Mystery of the Emblem). I've also written for Elibe before (Binding Blade and Blazing Blade), but not a lot.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? - Sometimes I do, but usually I don't. I appreciate comments, but oftentimes I read them and then end up forgetting about them before responding...

What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? - I have a hard time doing true bad endings, but I think the winner here is A Tale of Star-Crossed Knights. It has a happy ending for Finn and Erinys' children, but I think the epilogue scene with Finn hurts.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? - This is a tough choice, but I'll go with A Dream and a Confession. It is a tough scenario with Lapis nearly dying but has a sweet happily ever after ending.

Have you ever gotten hate on fics? - Thanks be to God, no.

Do you write crossovers? - I have between FE games. (Sadly there's a fic I wrote where Alcryst hangs out with other blue-haired characters I like such as Seliph and Caeda which I never finished.) I have never written a crossover with a non-FE...if I were to do so, it would involve Kirby in some way.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? - Not that I know of, though I do recall someone once used a name for an OC without my permission. I think it's fine though because I didn't come up with the idea of a specific character having parents - that is obviously not original to me.

Have you ever had a fic translated? - Not that I know of.

Have you ever cowritten a fic before? - No, and I doubt I will ever do it.

What's your all-time favorite ship? - Another tough question because there are a lot of ships that I really like. The one that I've really liked the most for the longest time though is Quan and Ethlyn.

What's the WIP you want to finish but probably never will? - As stated above, the Alcryst hangs out with others fic, but I also want to finish Under the Setting Sun (Samson/Sheena) one day. It's been two years since I published the last chapter...

What are your writing strengths? - Putting in niche references to worldbuilding or to random characters.

What are your writing weaknesses? - Actual prose instead of using dialogue as a crutch to advance the plot.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? - The plot of Courage is Ivy struggling to speak French. I thought that was fine. In past versions of A Tale of Star-Crossed Knight I put in bits and pieces of other languages like Italian too, but I cut it in revisions because I didn't think it served a real purpose.

First fandom you wrote for? - Genealogy of the Holy War.

Favorite fic you've ever written? - For sure A Tale of Star-Crossed Knights because I can pick that one up and get myself lost in it any day.

From what I understand you are supposed to ping two more people for this? I've forwarded the set of questions to two other people in private, but I'm not sure if I want to ping them in public. You'll see if they answer!

Do they play any instruments?

Alas, Stell is instrumentless! They’ve been little too busy building their little gadgets, repairing Anima, and whatnot and frankly the idea of learning a musical instrument has probably. Not even crossed their mind!

He does like to hum while he works though, if that means anything asdkfjn. I like to think he probably has a voice well suited for lullabies and ballads, much to their alt-rock chagrin

What kind of leitmotif and/or battle theme would they have?

As for the battle theme for his hypothetical boss fight, I think he would be a symphonic metal kind of guy! Something appropriately grandiose and dramatic, but with fire and energy. Spice it up with those robotic/mechanical soundfonts that the Robobot soundtrack likes to use, and that’s pretty much what I envision!

Are there any songs you associate with them?

You come into my house. And ask if I have taped any songs to this little guy. Grabs your shoulders. Yes. Yes I do asdkfjn

The song that I associate the Most with Stell is Loose Cannon [Set it Off], and, to a lesser extent, Me, Myself, and I [Five Seconds of Summer]!

WOOHOO! Buckle up everybody, it's time for a Starkaabii Ramble™! I'll let my main two gals shine here :D

⭐️ If your OC could pick a final weapon from any game to use (such as the Star Rod, Crystal Gun, Triple Star Cane, etc.) which one would they choose and why?

I would imagine Sub-Zero opting for the Love-Love Stick, for no reason other than its effectiveness against Dark Matter. She deeply disdains and fears the things both, so even something to keep around as a ward of sorts would make her feel significantly better. Lavandia, I could absolutely see going for the crystal gun for one reason: rooty tooty point-n-shooty.

👻 Has your OC ever been possessed or mind controlled? If yes, how did it happen?

Sub-Zero has the fortune of not being able to be possessed by Dark Matter—the light within a Kiridan (fancy name for the puffball species I adopted a great many years ago from an old friend who had adopted it from the one who coined the term in the first place) Star Warrior is simply too powerful, and a Dark Matter would essentially be torturing itself attempting to possess one anyhow. It's likely this fact that protected her from Nightmare during the war, considering she was in fact captured and held prisoner by his forces at one point. She's nowhere near as strong as Kirby, but her inner light is still very powerful.

Lavandia's never been possessed or mind controlled simply because she's never even experienced anything related to Dark Matter or the war, growing up in the sheltered, long-forgotten reaches of Floralia. I'd imagine she'd be a bit like Nemona from Pokémon Scarlet/Violet though where she's just too darned energetic and enthusiastic to be kept under full control anyway.

🥀 What is your OC's favorite kind of flower/plant?

Sub-Zero has a particular fondness for irises and orchids, though she's rather fond of all flowers. Lavandia, of course, does not have a single plant she dislikes, but her favorite flowers are almost definitely daisies and yellow roses.

📺 If the anime got a reboot or if there was another Kirby TV show, do you have any ideas for episodes that your OC could appear in? What would the plot be and what role would your OC play?

I actually have Sub-Zero's arrival to Dreamland planned and written out exactly as though it were an entire HnK episode, which will be seen eventually in fanfic form at at least, eheheh. 🪞 Does your OC have a mirror counterpart? If so, what is their mirror counterpart like?

Indeed; to start with, let me ramble a bit about the mirror doppelgangers. In my headcanons, the Mirror counterparts are not opposites of their normal selves, but rather the reflections of what lies deep within their normal counterparts—that is to say, the Mirror doppelgangers are born of and created purely from the Dimension Mirror reflecting the darkest hidden traits of their regular self when that individual gazes into the Dimension Mirror (or any version of it, like the Black Mirror). For example, Shadow Kirby was born of Kirby's hidden insecurities; Dark Meta Knight was born of Meta Knight's hunger for power; Dark Taranza was born of Taranza's grief and regret, and so on. Because these counterparts are just reflections of their true selves, the only way to truly kill them would be to kill their normal counterpart.

Sub-Zero's mirror world counterpart is known as Shimokage; because Sub-Zero underwent brief ninja training in the GSA before ultimately choosing the path of a knight, her mirror counterpart is a ninja of... mediocre skill. She is the reflection of Sub-Zero's many long-standing grudges that she harbors deep within and finds herself unable to forgive—be it her hatred of Dark Matter for its attempted annihilation of her kind; her hatred of Nightmare and all the misery he caused; her bitterness toward traitors such as Yamikage, Marx and Magolor, or her loathing of HWC for their invasion of Popstar (for which she pins the blame, and anger, squarely on Susie). That said, Shimokage is a vengeful and petty soul, always out on a quest to get revenge for things she's long since forgotten the purpose for, fueled by countless old grudges that have long since become muddied and twisted together. Her bitterness has become a warped envy over the smallest of things, adding more and more grudges to her endless list. She carries none of the honor and dignity in the face of those she disdains that Sub-Zero attempts to uphold.

Shadow Lavandia is the reflection of the wild, untamed force of nature that lurks within Lavandia. If Lavandia is like a blooming garden of flora, then Shadow Lavandia is like an overgrown, untamable jungle. She's unpredictable and vicious, sent into a rage by the smallest offense, and may be smiling at you one moment, then furiously strangling you in her ragged tangle of vines the next. This savage unpredictability lurks within Lavandia, but she masks it well under a cheerful optimism and patience that makes it all the more chilling when her savagery is unleashed.

Blade of Fjords — a Kirby-sized version of Sub-Zero's sword, Fjord.

"A frigid blade wielded by the enigmatic Herald of Winter. It emanates a curious icy chill, perfect for keeping it cool when things get heated."

Herald's Helm — a Kirby-sized version of Sub-Zero's mask, pauldrons and wings, without the dark tinted visor that the real mask has.

"War-worn armor resembling that of a certain icy warrior. Donning it fills the wearer's mind with fuzzy memories of times long since forgotten."

Lavandia: Doctor Healmore

Overgrown Flask — a vaguely pentagonal flask with healthy green vines wrapping around it and a mysterious purple potion encased within, capped by a small pale yellow flower.

"Something about this floral flask fills its holder with a ferocious tenacity whenever they enter battle. Nature can be fearsome."

Lavandian Hood — a lavender-colored eared hood complete with a small star-shaped charm dangling from the left ear and blue-and-white striped scarf covering the wearer's mouth, identical to Lavandia's getup. Akin to the Magoloran gear without the attached cape; instead comes with a wig of white hair peeking out from under the hood in the front and back. Lacks glasses, akin to the Sectonia gear.

🗣️ Does your OC speak more than one language? If they do, what languages do they speak and how did they learn them?

Sub-Zero, due to her experience and travels as a knight-errant, can speak a great many languages from various places of origin to a certain degree. Most prominently, she speaks the modern language of her homeland of Frostak, as well as its long-forgotten ancient tongue, and the common language of Popstar. Lavandia fluently speaks only the common language of Popstar, but she can read writings in ancient Halcandran due in large part for having been around for all of Magolor's obsessive studies.

🎶 What is a song that you associate with your OC, and why do you associate it with them?

I first listened to Stand My Ground by Within Temptation several years ago and immediately realized how much it reminds me of Sub-Zero, and haven't been able to associate any other song with her since. She's been through horrors, countless things that nearly cost her life, yet she clings to her steadfast determination no matter what and refuses to give up until she the moment breathes her last. She'll keep fighting until she can't anymore and someone else has to take up the mantle for her.

For Lavandia, I never put quite as much thought into it, but I always find myself thinking of her whenever I listen to The Seed by AURORA. Floralian through and through, she's a fierce whisperer and guardian of nature, and nothing enrages her more than nature being exploited and destroyed for the sake of greed. She abhors what was done to Halcandra in the war between the Mages and Technicians, and it fills her with a sickening dread to think how close Popstar has come at times to bringing the same fate upon itself. She despises all the things that spark the greed in people that causes them to take the beautiful world around them for granted.

Wanna share any more about your oc Renn?

Renn is the OC I’m the most “my tuoys” about. No overarching plot rn, just mainly a guy I’m building a world around. The gist is:

Magic isn’t much of a thing anymore, but there’s the occasional old artifact, fae ancestry or monster. Everyone knows it but doesn’t really talk about it. Renn discovers he can absorb magic and gain new forms like a Kirby. They’re super useful in dealing with the supernatural, but hard to control. Renn hates it, & it’s hard to keep secret when u work at a campground in The Woods Full of Magic with your ex (Sophie.)

There’s his default Masked Self but the forms I’ve got so far are:

Finally working on Homuncular Nature again!! I definitely do have a lot of plans and cool scenes playing out in my head for the next chapter, it’ll just come down to when I actually put pen to paper (or stylus to iPad) to actually organize and write them all. The road block I think is that I have seen neither Albedo nor fmab very recently and all my concrete ideas are for around the 30 episode mark for fmab, the turning point with the first actual confrontation against father and the subsequent Briggs arc.

Rewriting Ten Thousand Maple Leaves! A lot of people have been very kind but I think I missed the mark with my first chapter to be honest. My writing has gotten a lot wordier and less succinct, which feels like I’m filling a chapter more with fluff and unnecessary description than actual content. I think I also dislike how I characterized Sanemi and how quickly Kazuha was willing to agree with things. Writing both of them is kind of a difficult challenge tbh! I think in rewriting it I want to give back to Kazuha more of his vagrant role in the games, where he is avoiding the law for reasons somewhat out of his control.

Ebisu siblings content! I think it might be fun to try having them interact with more of the canon characters in kny but I also think there’s some value in a complete sort of outsider point of view when inserting characters into a piece of media. I feel like whenever I see self inserts I see a lot of ocs making themselves indispensable and making meaningful relationships with existing characters that way and that’s totally valid! That’s a lot of what I do for crossovers as well. I think when it comes to my own ocs though, I want them to feel grounded in some form and the reality of it is that none of the characters I make based on myself or real people are that impressive or remarkable. But I also think there’s a lot of value in showing smaller scale things outside of the main interactions and plot to show that even though we aren’t remarkable, we still have our own meaningful connections and ideologies and stories :) in the end the Ebisu siblings are a lot more visual though so I may just continue making doodles and art without writing anything haha

Kirby & Meta Knight ageswap AU: I was mostly doing this on my ask-gikabi sideblog in short form comics, but I lost sight of what I wanted to do after making the discord and starting to interact with some of the people who followed it. I think a lot of people are inspired and have their own very cool ideas that I wanted to take into account but then eventually it was no longer my story or the story I wanted to tell, which is why I’m thinking of restarting it as a fic. This one is still in very rough idea stage though, I have honestly no clue how I’m even going to begin organizing it

Yanfei ace attorney crossover: this one’s just pure crack lmao I would definitely write it as crack taken seriously but I think this is fun to explore just for small ideas that pop up every now and then, i.e. yanfei is semi-immortal because she’s half adeptus so it would be Really Funny to me if she showed up in dgs era, got her attorney’s license, went into hiding after it became obvious that she wasn’t aging, and then re-emerged after rebranding herself as her own daughter or granddaughter. That, and I have a lot of fun imagining someone as pragmatic as yanfei trying to get through the sheer chaos of aa despite being otherworldly

Continuing winter weather advisory: I got to a really good point in that fic and was rereading it today like,,, damn I wrote that? And it would be fun to see where I planned on going with it so I do want to also try working on that a bit if I can

Kazuha & Kunikuzushi role swap au: this is something I posted about a Long While ago but it’s an idea I continue to be fascinated with :) I especially enjoy how these two characters could have had completely different roles and personalities depending on how their pasts happened (with wanderer being so nice and turning so bitter and kazuha growing up so spoiled (for lack of a better word) and turning out so weary and yet kind

Finally got around to look into DAV, all I say I don't want to step foot into the tag again. DA fandom, never change

Braving than any US marine. I will never go into the tags. I get enough that leaks into my dash as it is.

I have blocked more DA fans in the past month than I have tumblr bots. I knew this was coming. I was joking with my friends on discord that I couldn't wait to block most of the DA fans. That the 17 of us on that server are the DA fandom to me.

I am going to use this opportunity to rant a bit. Sorry. I have been very good at trying to keep it all contained to private conversations. I deserve to take people to task as a treat. (And threat.)

I am trying to be as light one spoilers as I can. This also ended up being a fucking shit load longer than I meant. I just have a lot of bitching to say.

I have criticism for the DAV but they really come down to very personal tastes. For example, I miss DAI's tinting station for armor. I miss the Golden Nug so I can just have all the armor looks I want right off the bat. (But that was added in later DAI patches. I can't recall if the tinting station was too. It been too long. There might be hope for that.) I was also upset at how long the bug that kept resetting my Rook's appearance took to get fixed. That really sucked.

Besides that, there is nothing that takes substantially away from my enjoyment of DAV. It was another Bioware game that did that to me.

I thought the pacing at the beginning of DAV was way too quick but then I remembered how Bioware games usually go. Ostagar, Haven, the Citadel, and the Nexus is what I liked to call my Bioware graveyards. Its where all of my new characters go to die. The plot comes to a screeching halt at these areas. Bioware has always does good with their openings; action, intrigue! Let's go! But once you get through the flash opening... now wander around for a few hours picking up fetch quests and talking to 30 people all with so much dialogue to dump on you. Some of it is not bad dialogue but some of it is wholly unnecessary or way too much in one go. Like Varric's 10 minutes of "remember what you did in the last game?" Its bad when I dread talking to Varric of all people or just skip through his dialogue.

I appreciate the quick pacing much more on subsequent play throughs. It keeps me moving until well after recruiting Lucanis. By then its even out into a steady pace that keeps me engaged.

As for the fandom, which I hesitate to even call them that, because I don't think they even like Bioware games, has some of the most bizarre criticism. Again, I excepted it going in, but the subjects of their ire has me so confused and disappointed.

I have seen people saying that Hans fucking Zimmer's soundtrack for the game is bad. Which?????? No???????? Its not?

This song playing while fighting dragons with Taash has me so pumped. I want it in my veins.

The romance theme (that also plays at other moments) is beautiful and heart aching. Which fits the tone of the scene when it plays. The saddest banging ever.

And those Inquisition leitmotifs really got me good. Never thought DAI nostalgia would hit me so hard but here we are.

I have also seen people mad about the ending credits song. And I can't say that I'm not EXTREMELY fucking suspicious as to why they don't like the ending credits song. Is it because its R&B performed by a black woman and not sad indie white woman????

(But thanks Bioware for introducing me to another amazing artist to add to my collection.)

Another thing that sticks out to me is the polarizing topic of Mary Kirby writing Lucanis with the intent for him to be pansexual/demisexual. Which she didn't need to say that for me to pick up on it when I was playing through his romance. One of my most beloved OCs is demi. (And I kind of think I might be too. But labeling my own sexuality is something I really don't bother with.) Detractors seem to bad for ????? I don't understand know why. Because demi doesn't mean his romance with Rook or Neve is a chaste, no sex/little sex, relationship. They clearly fucked in the romance scene. The best way I can explain demisexuality is sexual attraction might not happen until a strong emotional bond it formed. Which is exactly how it plays out for his romance. It also explains why he won't romance Rook if a certain game choice is made. I know demisexual falls under the ace umbrella but I know a lot of people who have been wanting a strictly no sexual ace romance. So when the dev said there wasn't an ace romances, I think they weren't lying.

However, I also despise are the people who were asking Mary Kirby if Lucanis was a virgin. And I am seeing "Virgin Lucanis" tags on Ao3. And let me preface this by saying I visceral hate anything concerning the virginity of characters or people. Because I have never not seen it used as a way the track someone's purity or as a way to disparage them. Making them out to be a naive clown. Virginity such an arbitrary thing, a made up concept that people hang a lot of hats on. It triggers an immediate flight or fight instinct in me.

In my experience and the experience of other queer people I know, your journey to understanding yourself is not always a clear defined path. You experiment, you do things that you realize afterwards don't fit with who you are. Sometimes you know from the beginning, and yay, good for you. I am sure you are very proud you got it in one.

But sometimes you aren't sure you're a lesbian until you have sex with a guy and realize nope, definitely lesbian. Sometimes you think you are cis and try to live that way and realize you hate it. And sometimes you are ace and had sex and realized it wasn't for you. These journeys are just as valid an any other and there are myriad of reasons you make decisions that you do. My point being Lucanis can be demi but also not a virgin. It doesn't fucking matter. Running to his writer on Bluesky to have her tell you point blank that he is a virgin is weird and inappropriate. Stop it.

The handing out of "good stars" pisses me off. It screams the same kind of homophobia I got when people found out I dated a bisexual guy and "ew, aren't you disgusted he sucked dick before? Aren't you afraid he'll cheat on you with a guy?" This being said to my face when in the back of my mind I was thinking "I like guys and girls too. But you will never know that about me because now I know I can't trust you."

So why does anyone care if an ace/demi character had sex before? Why do you really care? Hm?? All I hear with people asking if Lucanis is a virgin is "ew, he hasn't had SEX before, right?! I don't want to touch him if he has!!"

This is an extremely sore topic for me because I additionally I grew up being told that my worth was directly tied to me not having sex. Spoiled goods and all that.

Virginity is not a real thing, fuck off about it.

And then also that Lucanis and Neve can start a relationship if Rook doesn't romance either of them. I have see the most vile shit about Neve because of it. She isn't stealing your man. No, Lucanis does in fact care for Neve as much as he does Rook if they are in a relationship. There is no such things as soulmates, there is no such things as people being "meant" for each other. Rook and Lucanis' relationship is different than Neve and Lucanis' relationship because shock/horror they are different characters.

As much as I do ship some BG3 together, this is exactly why I am glad Larian didn't do this. Not because I don't like companion entering relationships together. I love when they do actually. I just knew people could not be fucking normal about it.

Speaking of Neve, I never unfollowed and blocked someone faster than "Bioware is wrong Neve only likes women." Queer characters in media are only barely starting to catch up with varying levels of blink and you'll miss them quality. Neve is already a queer woman, she already is queer representation in media. This fandom is just so fucking mask off biphobic.

As for romances being "too short" in general. I know I am ruined forever by BG3's romances. I knew I would be, I curved my expectation accordingly. It also helped that I went back and replayed DAI right before DAV's launch. Replaying, I remember just how short the romances were. DA2 more so. DAO, y'all don't remember DAO's unmodded romances.

Okay I am being unfair with the DAO dig. The talking part of the DAO romances were nice. Just those cutscenes, oof. ME1 came out just 2 years before DAO and it's romance scene wasn't this rough. More fade to black was the right call actually. Bioware you need to hire Larian's intimacy coordinators please.

But it is true we have had 10 to 15 years to make up in our heads how these romances played out. Years of art and fanfiction to make us make it more than it was.

I was privately streaming my DAI with some friends. We got to the part in DAI where Morrigan reveals herself to the Inquisitor. One of my friends who was watching is younger than us. He was too young to play DAI when it first came out and made fun of who jerky the animation of Morrigan descending the stairs was. Another friend and I explained about how rewatching it now, we were both caught off-guard by it too. Because in our heads we remember Morrigan floating gracefully down the stairs. When in reality that wasn't the case and it was all in our heads. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Continuing, I have seen some people mad about a character from the books who is in the game. A character who is corrupted by the Blight. Who does bad things. People are mad they "did this character dirty." You mean the character corrupted by the evil Blight does things that are corrupted and evil?! Did they expect being horrifically Blighted would make them good????????? Man, DAO/DAA ruined Tamlen and the Mother too, huh?

And this is super fucking controversial, I think having only 3 imported choices was the right call. I would have like maybe a couple more choices carrying over but that is neither here nor there. The choices in Dragon Age Keep were so fucking bloated is was not funny.

Quick without looking her up: who was Ginnis and why was there a flag option in for whether or not she was alive? Who was Ghyslain and why did it matter if he was told his wife was dead or not? Why was blackmailing Ser Thrask a thing? Has getting Cammen and Gheyna together ever come up? What about Athras' wife? What about Zerlinda and her kid? I don't see anyone upset that Ignacio didn't show up in the DAV Crow story line. Why were any of these flags there in the first place? Did the writers think it was ever going to be brought up again if you feed the prisoner the guard's lunch? Even looking at Dragon Age Keep and the wiki I barely remember these characters. There was no reason to have these flags at all.

Speaking of killing your darlings. No we were not robbed when we saw the concept art. Its concept. Putting all of it in DAV would have been bad. Sometimes you have to leave things on the cutting room floor because including is not worth it in the end. And use as players will never know why it didn't work out. Use the concept art the same way as the devs did. Its there for inspiration. Now go draw it or write fanfiction about it.

People like to say that choices in DA used to matter, no they did not and never did. How was DAI actually different if Hawke chose to support the Mages over the Templars? You know, the crowning choice in DA2? Was the mages stronger in DAI? No, Fiona tells you that they are losing the war. The mages didn't have bigger numbers. You don't get any kind of stat or narrative boost. All choices in all the games are a net zero gain. Aside for some dialogue flare. The world state does not change crossing from game to game.

I do like that call back as much as anyone. I liked Hawke talking about their love interest in DAI. But if I wanted to truly experience that romance I have to go back to DA2 and play it again.

I have also seen people bitching about Taash's gender journey realizing they are non-binary. I am sorry I have a hard time caring about stranger's negative opinions about it, when I have loved non-binary friends talking about how they were deep touched and got emotional over Taash's story. Maybe Taash's story isn't your story but it is someone's.

We don't have the token trans character this time. We have three non-binary character. One a companion, one an ally healer, and one who turns out to be a bad guy. Which is in fact okay to have villain queer characters when you have many more queer good guys. We also have two trans characters who play more than passing roles.

Speaking of "trans" is "too modern" of a term. Trans is a Latin word. Tevinter speaks pseudo Latin. Next.

I just do not understand. If year after year you get so fucking upset about Bioware games, please just stop playing them. You don't have to buy them, you don't have to buy them at full price. Just go do literally anything else.

There are games I was going to play this year then saw something I didn't like about them and went, I'll pass. I didn't make hating that game my entirely personality.

Edit: Oh I forgot "DAV isn't dark fantasy like the others." No you are thinking about DAI. DAI was pretty much high fantasy with a couple kind of dark parts. DAV has too much body horror and bio horror to not be horror. Giant cysts and boils of blight organic matter that infects people and turns them into corrupted zombie like creatures. How much corrupted tentacles, human centipede trees, people getting ripped apart, eye teeth, and literal bloodbaths do you need until "dark fantasy"?
