I'm honestly loving your posts about your experience doing debate! Do you have any other stories or cool things you learned while doing debate and speech?
oh I sure do have some stories about Speech and Debate!
now, the best stories come from Policy Debate rounds.  and it’s bc there is a v cutthroat Policy Debate culture.  it’s rooted in just, generally, what Policy is.  Policy is strictly regimented and notoriously difficult and the rounds last for much longer than they should.  you had to be talking at light speed, writing as quickly as possible in a sort of code called “flow” (essentially, a shorthand to allow you to take notes fast - my team’s flow involved removing vowels from words), paying attention to another teenager’s argument, and dressed like a goddamn lawyer for hours.
in the very first debate round I ever did, the topic was food stamps, and my partner and I were in the affirmative.  at one point, the opposing team said “what about food stamp fraud?”  I, v rightly, pointed out that fraud is rare.  and someone on the opposing team said “well my uncle does it.”  and I just stared at her for a moment before saying “then your uncle is committing a crime.”  she tried to say that I don’t have the right to talk about her family, and I (again, v rightly) said “you brought it up.”  we won that round.
I once went up against a team that was the epitome of the cutthroat Policy Debate culture, which made sense, bc they were from a high school infamous in our area for the intensity of their Speech and Debate team.  I got frustrated with one of them for saying that Germany was “evil” bc of WWI and WWII, but that’s irrelevant.  bc the person who said Germany was evil was later disqualified for trying to strangle his debate partner after they lost a round.
one time someone on our team ran up against an argument about disposing radioactive waste in Yucca Mountain.  I’m pretty sure the topic was food stamps.  but we didn’t have evidence for it, so that night when we got back to the hotel (it was a two-day tournament), we looked up evidence about disposing radioactive waste in Yucca Mountain.
speaking of off-topic arguments: Policy had a very strict structure and format.  and it was also notorious for rounds going off the rails.  I once sat in on a round and watched a teammate talk very passionately about how difficult it would be to reproduce in space.  I can’t remember what the actual topic was, but I guarantee it had absolutely jack shit to do with space or reproduction.
there was one team that walked into a round, presented their argument, and then said “we don’t believe in arguing or aggression so we are now going to sit in lotus position for the rest of the round.”  they didn’t do any rebuttals.  but bc their opposing team didn’t address the whole thing about not arguing and sitting in lotus position, the lotus position team won.  I’m not 100% positive this actually happened, bc I heard it from someone who heard it from someone else.  it might just be a Policy Debate urban legend.  but with how weird Policy was, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was true.
there are a lot of different types of Debate and Speech formats.  one type of Debate format is called Public Forum (PF).  my team called people who did PF “puffers” and in general mocked it for being objectively easier than Policy.  I say objectively easier bc I did PF at one tournament after I had switched to Speech (a certain number of people needed to sign up for specific types of rounds in order to have those rounds happen, so we sometimes had to do stuff like that).  and I won fourth place.  I won like two rounds the entire year I did Policy.  but I got fourth place in Public Forum on my first try, without prepping whatsoever.  PF is easy as fuck.
you needed to be practicing even while you were at a tournament.  the team would take over lunch tables in the cafeteria (bc tournaments were at schools and the main area where everyone gathered was always the cafeteria).  debators stayed at the tables to go over evidence and arguments, and speakers would intermittently wander off to go talk to lockers.  ideally, you practiced your Speech piece for someone on your team, but bc everyone was busy working on their own thing, you frequently had to make do with practicing your piece in front of a wall or lockers.  this was a legit meme in Speech.  I had a T-shirt that said “I talk to walls” on it.  people unfamiliar with Speech and Debate were v confused when they walked down a hallway and saw professionally-dressed teenagers talking to walls and lockers.
you weren’t allowed to enter a room (9 times out of 10, rounds were in a random classroom in the school) before the judge did, so you just sort of waited in the hall.  if you were in Debate, you prepped.  if you were in Speech, you chatted with your opponents.  once you found a Speech event you were good at, you stuck with it - mine was Original Oratory, or OO.  so you regularly ran up against the same people, and got to know them.
in Speech, you got to know your opponents, but rarely knew them by their name.  you knew them by their piece.  after all, you heard their piece over and over and over.  often, you accidentally memorized portions of your opponents’ pieces, bc you weren’t allowed to zone out during rounds.  you had to pay attention to your competitors even if you’d heard their piece before.  if you didn’t, or if you were fidgeting in a way that could be distracting, the judge would dock you.  I tend to fidget, so I ran into that issue a lot.  my coach eventually told me to sit behind the judge, and I stopped being docked for fidgeting.
there was only one excuse to leave a Speech round before the last person had presented, or to arrive at a Speech round late, and it was if you were entered in multiple events and needed to go to your other round in a different room.  I was in rounds where there were few competitors and they were all in multiple events, so I presented to just the judge.  eye contact is a big part of Speech, so to get out of staring intently at the judge the whole time, I utilized something a teammate had come up with.  I asked the judge if I could make up people in the room to make eye contact with.  never got told I couldn’t do that, bc the judge didn’t want to be stared at any less than I didn’t want to stare at them.
there was one girl who I ran up against all the time.  absolute sweetheart, so kind, I really liked her.  I never knew her name, and she never knew mine.  I just knew her as the girl who talked about music and living with Turner Syndrome.  she probably knew me as the person who talked about female representation in the media and living with Asperger’s Syndrome.  my senior year, I went to Nationals and won a special award.  this regular opponent of mine?  she came up and congratulated me afterwards.  I’m ending this long-ass ask on this story bc it’s legitimately one of my favorite moments from Speech and Debate.  a competitor congratulated me, told me I deserved the recognition, that she was happy for me.  bc she had heard my speeches over and over again about how much I had struggled to get to where I was.
and I’d heard her speeches about her struggles over and over.  and I guarantee you, if she had won instead of me, I would have done the same thing.  I would have told her I was happy for her and that she deserved the win.  bc Speech and Debate could be cutthroat at times (esp the Debate part), but in the end, it was about communication and making connections with people.
I don’t know what that girl is up to now.  but I hope she’s doing well.

Good Omens: A Study in Comedy
A couple years ago in my senior year of high school, my English teacher had told us for our last essay of the year, to pick any novel by any notable author, and write about it. I picked Good Omens cause i happened to be reading it at the time, but this essay was legit the most fun I’ve ever had writing an essay. I figured with the show coming out at @neil-gaiman being on tumblr, I might as well post it here were people might enjoy it.
Its about why Good Omens is successful as a comedy. It’s kinda long so it’s gonna go beneath a cut. But yeah here it is. (Also apologies for the formatting I cant figure out how to make this thing readable. rn it looks a lot better on desktop than mobile. Any suggestions on that are welcome)
---
In the world of entertainment-- be that film, TV, literature, etc. -- comedy is hard. It’s hard to act, it’s hard to write, and it takes real talent to do comedy well. Often, comedy goes underappreciated in the professional world; however, Good Omens seems to be an exception. In writing the forward to their book, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman describe the many well-read and deteriorating copies of Good Omens that they have had the pleasure of signing. From books dropped in bathtubs and puddles, to pages being held together by packing tape, clearly, the book is well loved by many. The unique quality of this novel is that rather than a “laugh-out-loud” humor, Pratchett and Gaiman aimed for a more subtle, ironic humor adding up to a satire that teaches a lesson on the importance of humanity and compassion. All in all, Good Omens is a delightfully witty and entertaining book that is sure to please any avid reader.
---
Biography
It was the year 1989 when Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett decided to combine efforts in writing Good Omens. At the time, Gaiman was 29. He was born in Hampshire UK in 1960 and grew up frequently visiting his local library, developing a life-long love for reading. After briefly pursuing a career in journalism, he soon became interested in writing comic books. The Sandman is one of Gaiman’s most notable graphic novel works. It won several awards including three Harvey Awards, nine Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, and the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story, becoming the first comic to every receive a literary award.  After gaining this success, Gaiman has gone on to expand his resume by working in film and television. He’s written and directed two films: A Short Film About John Bolton (2002) and Statueque (2009). Most recently, Gaiman is writing for the television series adaption of his book, American Gods, set to premier on April 30, 2017 on Starz.
Gaiman’s writing companion, Terry Pratchett, was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire in 1948. He had a passion for writing from a young age, publishing his first story, “The Hades Business” in his school magazine at age thirteen. Four years later at age seventeen, Pratchett dropped out of school to pursue journalism. It was in this line of work that he came into contact with his first publisher, Colin Smythe, and through him published his first book in 1971, The Carpet People. Smythe remained a close friend of Pratchett and in 1983 published the first book of Pratchett’s phenomenally successful series: Discworld. At this time, Pratchett worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board as a press officer. Four books into his Discworld series, Pratchett decided to become a full time writer. After a long and successful career, unfortunately in 2007 Pratchett was diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer’s called Posterior Cortical Atrophy. He lived the last years of his life very well; in 2009, he was knighted by the Queen for his services to literature and in 2013 he presented a documentary discussing the controversial topic of assisted dying. Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die won both an Emmy and a BAFTA. Despite campaigning for assisted dying, Terry did not choose to take his own life and died peacefully surrounded by family in March 2015.

Extended Analysis
The comedy collaboration Good Omens has been deemed by many to be a great novel. Critics praise the unique blend of writing styles for making this novel a success, but to understand what makes the comedic genius of Good Omens, one must ask what precisely makes it funny. This novel is a satire; it comments on existentialist ideas surrounding humanity and the responsibility humans have over their own actions for better or for worse. In order to emphasize their novel as an unexpectedly witty and socially relevant satire, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett use several literary devices such as repetition, mood, and irony. In a remarkable world belonging to angels and demons who wish to bring about the apocalypse, the air of abnormality must be maintained throughout the novel; comedy only follows naturally.
In order to emphasize the absurdity of the events in Good Omens, the authors often used repetition in describing people or events. Given that this book revolves around the events of Armageddon, absurdity is not hard to come by; it is precisely what enforces the satire nature of the novel. For instance, the Antichrist is first described to the reader as “a golden haired male baby we will call the Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of this World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness” (Gaiman 27). Not only does the baby have this long list of titles, but he is referred to as such several more times in the next few pages. This description is a means to bring attention to the oddness of the situation and the repetition serves to emphasize it. Another interesting use of repetition is a scene in which the events of the evening are being narrated by an irritable man named R. P. Tyler; a man who not only believes himself to be the sole decider of right and wrong in the world, but that it is his responsibility to pronounce his wisdom unto others via the letter column of the Tadfield Adviser. This man is the epitome of arrogant old men and on the afternoon of Armageddon, finds himself directing several parties of odd people to the same location. In the eyes of the reader, all of the characters introduced thus far are arriving to the small English town of Tadfield for the start of the apocalypse. The events are rumored to take place at the Lower Tadfield Air Base and in succession, R. P. Tyler encounters four groups of people going to the Airfield within a span of 30 minutes (Gaiman 325-336). The result is a comedic effect that brings all separate storylines back to the same page. The repetition of events is what brought to R. P. Tyler’s attention to the odd occurrences in Tadfield. As the man met group after group, he quickly becomes more flustered and his figurative bubble of normality is cracking until Crowley’s arrival: “There was a large once-black car on fire in the lane and a man in sunglasses was leaning out the window, saying through the smoke “I’m sorry, I’ve managed to get a little lost. Can you direct me to the Lower Tadfield Air Base? I know it’s around here somewhere”” (Gaiman 334). One can safely say that after this event, R. P. Tyler no longer has a figurative bubble of normality.
---
One of the highlights of Good Omens is the comical language in which it is written, setting an air for the absurd to be normalized and the mundane to receive an exaggerated retelling. An ambiance of abnormality is maintained throughout the entire novel through methods of over-explaining minute details. For instance, as the first proceedings of Armageddon are set into motion, the scene is set with the following depiction:
“It wasn’t a dark and stormy night. It should have been, but that’s the weather for you. For every mad scientist who’s had a convenient thunderstorm just on the night his Great Work is finished and lying on the slab, there have been dozens who’s sat around aimlessly under the peaceful stars while Igor clocks up the overtime” (Gaiman 14).
This description of the setting contributes to a lighthearted mood despite the impending apocalypse. It feels as though the authors are making polite conversation as the story progresses, and this style of writing is used throughout the novel. Later on, a scene occurs in which a demon kills a room full of telemarketers and the aftermath is described as follows: “. . . a wave of low-grade goodness started to spread exponentially through the population and millions of people who ultimately would not have suffered minor bruises of the soul did not in fact do so” (Gaiman 308). The elegance in which that sentence is written gives the reader a sense of understanding in that the authors are not technically wrong in their description. The line is satirical and for many readers, felt on a personal level. The witty line does not fail in upholding the absurd and exceedingly nonchalant atmosphere. This style brings to light underlying truths of humanity that one may not acknowledge in a day to day basis, but are true nonetheless. Through this recognition of distinctly human emotions and struggles, Gaiman and Pratchett succeed in creating an engaging environment in which the reader is both reflective and entertained by their story.
---
The irony in Good Omens lies within the ongoing discussion of humanity and the importance of free will. As Heaven and Hell prepare for Armageddon, the key to its commencement lies in the hands of the Antichrist. However, the Antichrist ends up being much more human than either side predicted. As usual, the demon Crowley and angel Aziraphale come to this conclusion long before their superiors:
““Because if I know anything,” said Crowley urgently, “it’s that the birth is just the start. It’s the upbringing that’s important. It’s the influences. Otherwise it will never learn to use its powers.” . . .
“You’re saying the child isn’t evil of itself?” [Aziraphale] said slowly.
“Potentially evil.  Potentially good, too, I suppose. Just this huge powerful potentiality, waiting to be shaped.” said Crowley” (Gaiman 58).
Given that Adam the Antichrist grew up in the absence of any supernatural influence, he naturally became a very pure and innocent child who only wanted save the environment and read conspiracy theory magazines. In fact, unaware of his power and heritage, he was involuntarily at fault for the rise of Atlantis and the visitations of aliens. His deep love for the planet also allowed for his subconscious to grow rain forests in the thick of cities and to turn 500 tons of Uranium into a lemon drop. In a book that satirizes the meanings of good and evil, it is very ironic that the Antichrist has the greatest amount of love to give. As observed by local witch, Anathema: “Something or someone loves this place. Loves every inch of it so powerfully that it shields and protects it. A deep-down, huge, fierce love. How can anything bad start here?” (Gaiman 229). It is reiterated several times throughout the book that humans are their own worst enemy. They are the ones who have free will, therefore they choose whether to act good or evil. Demons and angels have no choice in this respect. Gaiman and Pratchett make clear to their audience that humans must value their free will, spread love and live life to its fullest. If the Antichrist can do it, so can you.
---
When reflecting on the comedic success of Good Omens, one can conclude that Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett are masters at their craft. This wonderfully composed work of fiction succeeds in satirizing the inner workings of human nature in that the supernatural can do no worse to humans than humans already do to themselves. Stylistically, Gaiman and Pratchett create a casual environment that highlights the absurd events by using techniques such as irony, mood, and repetition. The result is a clever and profound lesson on the importance of love in the human experience taught not by those who are human, but those who act with the most humanity.

so i need to make a ramble post of all the emotional shit that’s happened this week
monday
sent really sappy emotional emails to about a dozen of my all time favorite teachers, from kindergarten all the way to senior year of college
got a ton of lovely replies which made me incredibly happy
already posted about this i think, but i straight up told my favorite middle school teacher that i loved him and he said he loved me too so i’m dead
presented my capstone project and said a final goodbye to my capstone class and my professor
generally reflected on my capstone class and how i actually did it and how i really connected with everyone in the class
said “fuck it” and sent my rambly thank you email to my capstone professor right after presentations ended and made him literally cry
tuesday
went to work, said goodbye to some of my coworkers who i knew i wouldn’t be seeing before graduation
did my final presentation in polisci, which was my last academic responsibility ever
said goodbye to my polisci group which was legit the best group i have had for a group project in my life
got emotional about capstone again because my friend kyle (who won an award for his capstone presentation) made a sentimental facebook post about the night and thanked all of us fellow capstone kids
wednesday
got sappy at work again because my underclassmen friends were talking about how they didn’t want me to leave just yet
tori had a final with my capstone prof (the one who i made cry with my email) and of course, he talked to her and told her that it made him “bawl like a baby” and gave her a hug on my behalf
did another “fuck it” and went to his office to see him on last time before graduation
he expressed his gratitude about the email and we legit had a half-hour long conversation about a ton of different things that made us both choke up multiple times
he gave me so much unbelievable validation, saying that i have “character” and “a smile that brightens the room” and a personality that makes me “so goddamn attractive to others” and he was like “i bet you don’t know how much people admire you” which made me tear up immediately
and then he went on about how he has a bunch of tv staff that are graduating, and then he’ll have more freshmen come in and spend the next four years with him that’ll “break his heart all over again” which made his voice crack and made me die a little inside
and then he goes “and then the twins came in. not members of my learning community, not members of my staff... and they got into my heart more than most.” which made me lose my shit more than anything else probably
i just... this week, man. the lasts are starting to happen. i said goodbye to capstone and to academics in general and to a professor that i really appreciated. and i still have to say goodbye to my work and my boss, and say goodbye to my senior friends one last time on saturday.
the theme of this week: emotions are dumb and should be hated

Welcome, dear readers, to the much anticipated Union Season 1 finale, featuring the diverse cast of well-developed characters we’ve all come to love, such as cheating whore #1, cheating whore #2, and my personal favorite, cheating whore #3. Also starring purple Hannibal Lecter, Melody Tinker’s sunglasses, and Leon Trotsky. Last update saw the erotic tension between resident porn-king Gunther and his brother’s intended, Regina George Brittany Upsnott finally boil over, leading to this harrowing image:
Tumblr media
GOOD TIMES. Let’s pick up right where we left off..
Tumblr media
.. namely precious Gunther immediately jumping into bed with Melody not two minutes after his close encounter of the Brit kind. Guns has been suspiciously loyal and un-gross ever since we moved out of the dorms, but apparently his goal for senior year is to out-worst everyone else in the house. What a comeback!
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Brit is depressingly bowling her frustrations away under the unforgiving desert sky. Whaddup Brit, you must be dealing with some pretty complicated emotions right now.
-What?? No way, I’m totally, totally fine!
Tumblr media
I mean sure, why wouldn’t you be, it’s not like you’ve fucked literally everything up. After spending half of college dealing with fucking HaremGate all I wanted was an uneventful senior year I could speed through, but that would be too easy now, WOULDN’T IT.
Tumblr media
-The pins are you well-laid out plans for the future!
UGH Brit seriously, this isn’t happening. As in we’re gonna pretend it literally never happened, you’re gonna marry Daniel, Gunther is gonna marry Mel, everyone will live happily ever after and that’s the last I’m gonna hear of this bullshit.
Tumblr media
BRIT THE FUCK DID I JUST SAY
-I’m just heartfarting, GAWD
Yea you’re also about to fucking serenade him in front of Mel, have you legit lost your mind??? Is this how the rest of this year will go, me chasing you around cancelling your dumbass actions?
-Probably! lolol!
Tumblr media
-Aww Brit, if there was an award for best couple, we would definitely win it <3
Tumblr media
-Oh please, Gunther and I have you totally beat!
-Yea right Mel, bet you §10 me and Brit are gonna move in together before you and Gunther do!
-…So how you liking that pizza, Gunther?
-…Oh it’s good, Brit, thanks for asking.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile it looks like my restless Jojo/Wyatt reconciliation efforts have finally borne fruit! Good job, Wyatt!
-It’s no job, I’m just following mon coeur!
Nice, follow it all the way to redemption!
Tumblr media
YASSSS. I can’t stress enough how many times Wyatt had to apologize to get us to this point, I’m talking half their awake time for 3 days. God. The whole thing has been an extremely repetitive nightmare but finally we can put it to rest. Much like we put Frances! BURN IN HELL
Tumblr media
Finally, the universe has responded to my desperate pleas. I will even forgive the creepy ass llama because for once the cheering is completely appropriate. Reunited and it feels so good! Especially for me because if I had to press the apologize button one more time istg.
Tumblr media
Well.. The universe giveth and the universe taketh away. Literally can’t leave these dicks unsupervised for more than a minute before they start slutting it up. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU TWO
-Oh oh oh oh oh OH, caught in a bad romance <3
STOP SINGING INTO EACH OTHER’S MOUTHS. It’s time for drastic measures. Gunther is obviously unfamiliar with the concept of decency but maybe there’s still hope for Brittany..
Tumblr media
..especially after Daniel gives her a high-class romantic evening! Looking great, Dan. Please stop picking your teeth.
-I’m so uncomfortable, my hair hasn’t seen the light of day since I was a toddler! I’m putting my cap back on.
DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. Also suppress your gag reflex + every instinct in your body because it’s time-
Tumblr media
-to hit Londoste! OOH LA LA
-Brit, I feel like we’re.. ridiculously overdressed.
-No such thing, darling!
Tumblr media
-I’ll be having the filet mignon and a glass of the Veronaville ‘64, thank you.
-And I’ll be having chicken nuggets and a detailed report of the working conditions in this bourgie hellhole.
-DANIEL YOU PROMISED
Tumblr media
-Let’s raise a glass to us and our magical evening together-
-Yes, and this delicious food, stained with the tears of the working farmhand-
-Daniel, please.
Tumblr media
-My beloved ice queen, even though the diamond engagement ring “tradition” is another completely made up, SHAMELESS CAPITALIST SCAM, I just couldn’t bear the thought of wounding your gigantic, aggressively materialistic ego.. Marry me, my darling, be my Nadezhda!
Tumblr media
-OH baby of course I’ll marry you! Everything before this moment doesn’t count, right?
-I mean.. sure?
-Great!
Yes, what a wonderful, subtle night.
Tumblr media
-Oh Brit, you make me the happiest worker alive, which of course is a completely paradoxical state under capitalism!
Tumblr media
AWW MEANT TO BE <3 Finally we can put that gross, freckled chapter behind us.
Tumblr media
THAT’S RIGHT YOU BETTER RUN
Tumblr media
-WOOO congrats for not cheating for an entire day, Gunther!
Tumblr media
Our greek house is currently at a pathetic level 3 and it’s not hard to see why. As if the graves of Jojo’s former flames weren’t enough to put people off, imagine walking by and seeing this.
Tumblr media
This shit is still going on and has reached the hate-boner point where these two have permanent wants to see each other’s ghost. So much for nice points!
Tumblr media
Also going on: this bizzare, inexplicable feud that appeared literally out of nowhere.
-SHUT UP WYATT MAGIC ISN’T REAL
-IT SO IS MAGIQUE IS ALL AROUND US
Tumblr media
Finals are upon us! Only one semester of this fuckery left. There are of course two kinds of people, the kind pictured above..
Tumblr media
..and my peeps.
Tumblr media
Gunther, who hasn’t done anything college related since we were back in the dorms and Blue Meatballs et al were writing his papers, somehow still has a 4.0 gpa. Wow Gunther, what’s your secret??
-It’s no secret, I banged the half-alien professor.
Oh right lmao. You’re looking pretty down boo, what’s wrong?
-Man idk, I’m struggling with what might be like.. legit feelings for Brit.
WHAT. WELL PUT THEM BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM GUNTHER AND DRINK YOUR SORROWS AWAY LIKE AN ADULT. GOD
Tumblr media
YOU TOO BRITTANY. ISTFG YOU ASSHOLES ARE NOT FUCKING THIS UP ANY FURTHER.
Tumblr media
CAUSE HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED TO THE LAST PERSON WHO WENT OFF SCRIPT. Looking good, Fran!
Tumblr media
…………………………poor Brittany obviously suffered a stroke at some unspecified point in time. As if she didn’t have enough problems.
Tumblr media
SO. CLOSE. We just have to get through this one semester without the entire charade imploding, is that too much to ask????
Tumblr media
APPARENTLY YES. GODDAMMIT GUNTHER
-The heart wants what it wants.
What DOES it want tho, Selena, cause last time I checked you were in love with Mel you GIANT ASS
-Yea, hell if I know! Huhu!
IF I HEAR YOU PEOPLE HUHU ONE MORE TIME
Tumblr media
In equally distressing news Mickey Dosser was passing by and I invited him in just to see if he would go straight for the bubbles, which he of course did..
Tumblr media
..a move so irresistible that Wyatt had to stop and swoon over him literally in the middle of his millionth Jojo apology. I’ve honestly never had a sim court death as persistently as Wyatt, dude straight up WANTS TO DIE.
Tumblr media
-HOW DARE YOU WALTZ IN HERE AND TRY TO SEDUCE MY BOYFRIEND RIGHT BEFORE MY VERY EYES YOU VILE DISGUSTING SLOB
-Wut
-GET. OUT. BEFORE I STUFF YOU AND PUT YOU ON MY PORCH FOR HALLOWEEN
Tumblr media
-Wyatt.. I sensed it was you.
-Of course, Jojό <3 I got your message, why did you send a raven, I’m just upstairs-
-SILENCE. I invited you here, to my favorite place on this entire wretched planet, the center around which revolves my very existence..
Tumblr media
-..to ask you a very important question that I want you to CAREFULLY consider, taking into account that you’re standing next to the graves of the last people to betray me..
Tumblr media
-Wyatt Monif, you must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you. Almost from the earliest moments of our acquaintance, I have come to feel for you a passionate admiration and regard, which despite all my struggles and your whoring around, has overcome every rational objection, and I beg you most fervently to relieve my suffering and consent to be my husband. Also to please ignore my brother woohooing in the hot tub behind us and ruining the moment.
Tumblr media
-MON DIEU JOJÓ, OUI, OUI A THOUSAND TIMES OUI!! <3
Tumblr media
-Wyatt.
-Oui? <3
-Please don’t make me murder you, ok? Promise?
-Never, Jojό!
AW, what a beautiful engagement you guys, I’m tearing up.
Tumblr media
AND FINALLY, IT’S OVER. Gunther seriously graduated summa cum laude, how in the fucking world I legit dk but whatever!
Tumblr media
The last supper.. The Union bros have all graduated and I’m gonna speed-play the rest through their last year. Also Daniel and Melody are bffs now, I didn’t even know they were talking but nice.
Tumblr media
Time to go back where we came from! Ah, all grown up. It seems like yesterday they were toddlers surviving on cat food.
Tumblr media
Brit is the youngest of the bunch and has the whole house to herself after Mel and Wyatt graduate, a situation she takes advantage of by ALMOST CHEATING WITH THE FUCKING LLAMA. BRIT ISTG
Tumblr media
Finally, it’s time for Brit to leave our gross, incestuous cocoon. We’re gonna need a placeholder for the next generation tho, so as much as it pains me to say..
Tumblr media
..it’s Frances time. Bitch literally scares Brit as she’s trying to resurrect him, way to make me doubt my merciful decision Fran!
Tumblr media
Ugh great. Welcome back, Frances. I really did prefer you dead.
Tumblr media
Yea, can’t make any promises there. I don’t know what kind of wave of kindness overcame me, but I felt bad for Fran being all alone so…
Tumblr media
-I’M BACK BITCHES
Can’t believe we wasted 20k on these assholes but whatever. Time to grow up, Brit!
Tumblr media
Oh yea, looking good! Taking the ‘on Wednesdays we wear pink’ rule to extreme lengths.
Tumblr media
And we’re out of here, leaving the place in the capable hands of Fran and Ti-Ning, who immediately reconnect for a hot tub celebration of life.
So normally you’d think that would be the end of it and we’d get to the heir vote, right? RIGHT?
Tumblr media
WRONG. Please bear with me through this incredible bullshit. So I’m taking the heir vote portraits, specifically Jojo’s, and everyone else is hanging around on the edges of this empty photoshoot lot, when suddenly the fight cloud appears. At first I think it’s Wyatt/Daniel aka business as usual but then I make the horrifying discovery that it’s.. DANIEL/BRIT.
As expected, the MINUTE I looked away, Gunther/Brit went for it in plain sight, leading to the eruption of a massive shitshow. I’m like ok w/e we’re basically in pre-heir vote limbo so it doesn’t count, I’ll just quit without saving. But THEN I take a look at Daniel’s panel.. AND SEE THIS:
Tumblr media
I’ve literally no idea WTF HAPPENED, HOW IT HAPPENED, WHY, WHO MADE THE FIRST MOVE but the fact is that right after catching Gunther/Brit cheating, Melody and Daniel somehow got together even though they have never given any indication of being into each other and have one sole pathetic bolt. My best guess is 4-nice-points Melody went for it as a revenge but seriously WHAT THE FUCK
Tumblr media
GOOD TIMES. At this point I’m obviously even more like ‘I’M GONNA QUIT WITHOUT SAVING’ so I’m just taking these pics for shits and giggles, but THEN I look at Gunther’s panel… and see probably the most disturbing want I’ve ever come across:
Tumblr media
OK THEN. Reminder that Gunther’s secondary is PLEASURE so there’s literally no explanation for this shit except for legit. true love. As much planning as I did for these couples I’m like who am I to refuse A ROMANCE SIM’S engagement want???? I mean I also planned for Jojo to marry Frances and we all saw how that went. So I decide to save the game, even though it’s kinda unorthodox since it didn’t happen during actual gameplay but w/e, you just can’t ignore shit like that!!
Tumblr media
So I revisit the lot the next day and am faced with a shitshow of cosmic proportions. The whole thing is like a bizzaro parallel universe, I mean you have Brit and Dan legit looking like they crossed over from the set of NLL..
Tumblr media
..Gunther and Mel heartfarting over each other while also wanting to beat each other up..
Tumblr media
..this torrid affair out in the open..
Tumblr media
..AND WHATEVER THE FUCK THIS IS. I changed their turn-ons and now they have 3 bolts cause it felt like they really got the short end of the stick but I still can’t get over this bullshit happening in the first place. At least Jojo and Wyatt are having a good time! I guess at this point there’s only one thing left to do..
Tumblr media
..simultaneous break ups! The couple that dumps their fiances together stays together.
Tumblr media
Moving on to simultaneous crying/sighs of relief. If it seems like I’m halfassing this by not writing any dialogue it’s because I am, but I legit can’t, the whole situation is just too absurd to dramatize.
Tumblr media
And now to complete the wife-swap..
Tumblr media
Incredible. Now, hold on to your seats, everyone.. because the red ring memory..
Tumblr media
IS NOT GUNTHER’S. WHAT IN THE NAME OF HELL. BRIT GOT A RED RING FROM HER ROMANCE SECONDARY BUT SOMEHOW GUNTHER DIDN’T??? Honestly I’m hardly a romantic but. TRUE LOVE. Or a glitch. Let’s go with true love.
Tumblr media
And there you have it. The end of generation 1, which will live in the annals of history as the one where literally no one ended up with the person I had in mind for them and I might as well haven’t been there for all the control I had over these assholes.
NOW. TIME TO VOTE.
Tumblr media
WHO WILL IT BE????
Head over to my lj for a handy guide to voting + the link to the poll. Thank you all for reading! <3

So, I love how everyone is getting all into the eldritch horror visibly fae knowingly magical encounters. The descriptions are SO COOL.
But I’ve been thinking about how our understandings of the Fair Folk originated not with people who had these super obvious encounters with this visible magic figure. Instead, they come from people attuned to the ways in which this world as it is, is magical and frightening and overwhelming, and decided that eldritch monsters were the most logical and comforting explanation. So, I’ve been thinking a lot about how so many interactions with the fair folx could happen without the student knowing it….how many of these interactions and deals may have happened already. A few true stories: My roommate joined ROTC her freshman year. Four years of university for free, for five years of military service. Don’t tell me that there is just flesh and bone under the glamour of a military uniform, under the medals worn by those who watched her sign her contract. The Fair Folk have always loved games, and to gamble your life in the future of uncertain war is certainly worth $60,000 tuition per year for four years, plus a monthly stipend.  I have a friend whose financial aid is paid by a grant from some folks from New York City. In exchange, once a year she dresses up, takes out her piercings, and goes to dinner with them.
Sit with us, tell us the stories of your studies, sing for us. Oh, you don’t sing anymore? But you sing so lovely. Sing.
At these dinners, she does not let her smile drop.  I worked with a senior who would be Successful. They did everything, could not say no, every opportunity bigger than the last and they could Do It All. Directing a musical with a full orchestra in the biggest theater, performing across town themself in a different show each weekend for months on end, five classes and a thesis. One night, drunk and at 2am, a time were the glamour drops and world blurs into honesty, they said “I am so fucking lonely.” That is a powerful trade: love as fair as can be, a beating heart, community. But they wanted to be able To Do It All and they did.  A few years ago, the school was raising money for the endowment (the school is always raising money for the endowment). They were holding a fundraising dinner, with Big Important People who must be Inspired by Students Like You in order to donate. They gathered together the most talented performers of the whole university. Dancers whose bodies defied physics, pianists who seemed to play with extra hands, singer whose voices rang inhuman. Maybe there is a reason we already had those skills, it’s hard to know. We’ve all made so many sacrifices already to end up at a school where we can get not a single credit for our talents. Maybe something is already taking its due. Still. They gathered us, and planted us through the field to mime silent excitement as the Big Important People entered the tent in a procession. They had us perform for them – but never in the way we do best. Bottle up your talent, make it look like this. Dressed us all head to toe in white. Gave clear instructions.
Hand them this book. Collect these cards. They will write a wish. If they speak to you, just smile. Do not speak back.
They had us wait behind the kitchen.
Whatever you do, do not eat the food.
The university knows how to make a deal. They know what a little Talent and a little Dignity is worth. And we already owe them so much…why not this too?  In the morning I went back to where the tent had been, only to find an empty football field.  —— I feel like I have to add that the last story is literally 100% true. The others I have taken small creative liberties with (mostly the ‘lonely’ one cause I don’t want that person to be identifiable). But this one is hundo percent reality. Nothing I could add about it would make it sound less weird. They set up this crazy huge tent for it and thousands of dollars of lights and projection equipment, and the next morning had taken down the entire thing. They had this whole projection thing that took up a side of the stadium with a video about how great the university is, except I’d never even HEARD OF most of the professors or programs they interviewed or discussed in it (like its a big uni but still). Went to go look them up the next day, but couldn’t remember the names. They had us count a specific number of steps from one section to another. They had us do a weird running pattern on the stadium stairs that was supposed to look cool but I think just opened a portal in to my own personal hell. I still have the white sneakers and sweatshirt they gave us but I legit have not worn them since that night; I’m slightly scared to wear them but somehow can’t throw them out. When the donors walked in to the tent, we literally just stood around the field jumping up and down with excitement (silently) and waving flags (silently) and for the first time I understood Artaudian horror. They had cards at their table that they were supposed to write these messages on, and then we would collect them in these books, and honestly the whole night is pretty hazy but it was weird. The whole thing was directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (I swear to you this is true). Guys I’m low key pretty sure I’ve been to a revel and let me tell you, you are not a participant. You are there, but at best you are quaint entertainment, to be hidden in the corner when you’re not amusing them. You will do what they ask you (tell you). And there will be a part of you sitting on your shoulder saying, are you really doing that? And the answer will be yes, and it won’t be until after you leave that the wave will crash over you, nearly drowning you in the question, as you sputter awake asking, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK JUST HAPPENED?

Top 5 performances of the 2020-21 Rutgers men’s basketball season
New Post has been published on https://tattlepress.com/ncaa-basketball/top-5-performances-of-the-2020-21-rutgers-mens-basketball-season/
Top 5 performances of the 2020-21 Rutgers men’s basketball season
Tumblr media
In a season unlike any other, the Rutgers men’s basketball team achieved historic heights on its way to its first NCAA Tournament in 30 years. Along the way, fans were witnesses to incredible performances in some of the biggest games of the season. Here are the five best performances that we saw from the 2020-21 season:
Honorable Mention: Myles Johnson 10 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks vs. Indiana
Before I reveal my top five picks, I want to bring up an honorable mention that includes a player that will be sorely missed next year.
Myles Johnson put together several great performances last season that sometimes did not translate to box score numbers. However, on senior night vs. Indiana, Johnson put together a defensive masterpiece that led to a monster late-season win. He tallied a career-high seven blocks to go along with one of his eight double-doubles on the season. With all of the numbers, Johnson’s defensive presence in the middle did not waver in this game, a part of the game that does not show up in the stat-sheet, but a part of the game that was absolutely crucial for Rutgers’ overall success last season. Johnson was far and away one of the most consistent and reliable big man in the Big Ten last season, and in a conference filled with impactful big men that included names like Luka Garza, Hunter Dickinson and Kofi Cockburn, Johnson was the big man that walked away with Big Ten all-defensive team honors.
Johnson recently graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers with a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a field that he has decided to pursue at UCLA’s distinguished Samueli School of Engineering next year.
5. Caleb McConnell 13 points, 10 rebounds in NCAA Tournament 1st round vs. Clemson
Throughout the season, Caleb McConnell often made incredible impact on games while not necessarily jumping off the stat-sheet. A good example for McConnell’s unsung impact came in the 76-72 win vs. Minnesota on Feb. 4, where McConnell hit a crucial three-pointer and played tough defense down the stretch on Marcus Carr to help seal a pivotal win.
Keeping up with this theme, McConnell shined his brightest on college basketball’s biggest stage. Finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds, McConnell’s toughness was absolutely crucial to Rutgers securing its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983. All night, McConnell was active on the defensive end, diving on the floor for 50/50 balls that come to matter so much in single-elimination tournaments like March Madness. Additionally, nine of McConnell’s 13 points came in the second half, including a layup with 4:30 left which kept the Scarlet Knights ahead by four points.
McConnell’s performance was exactly what Rutgers needed to beat Clemson. The game lived up to its billing of a hard-nosed defensive battle between two determined teams, and without McConnell’s hustle plays and clutch baskets down the stretch, it is very possible that the game could have ended up in a Clemson win.

4. Montez Mathis 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 three-pointers in shorthanded win vs. Purdue
Looking back on the Scarlet Knights’ NCAA Tournament résumé, there were two games that stood out to me as wins that pushed us over the edge into the tournament. One of them was the early-season victory vs. Illinois and the other was the shorthanded victory over Purdue, a victory that could be thanked in large part to Montez Mathis.
It is fair to say that Mathis dealt with shooting struggles for a large part of the season, but with Ron Harper Jr. and Cliff Omoruyi sidelined with injuries, Mathis turned in his best outing of the season as he nailed five three-pointers and turned in 25 points on top of his always reliable defense en-route to a 81-76 win against the eventual No. 4 seed in the South region.
This win served as a testament to what last year’s team was about and the type of program Steve Pikiell has built in Piscataway. A myriad of injuries plagued the team at this time and forced them to dig deep if they wanted the win. While Harper Jr. and Omoruyi were officially sidelined, Geo Baker and Jacob Young also were playing through their own injuries at the time. For Baker, he was working his way back from his own ankle injury that he suffered on opening night and Young’s status was up-in-the-air due to a nasty spill that most of us remember against Ohio State.
Nevertheless, with the help of a stellar performance from Mathis, Rutgers was able to gut out the program’s second-most impressive win of the regular season. As for Mathis, he recently transferred to St. John’s University to continue his college career, but he did finish his career with the Scarlet Knights on a high note with 10 points against Houston in the Round of 32.

3. Geo Baker 20 points, 10 assists and career-high six threes on senior night vs. Indiana
Geo Baker, big shot maker.
The face of Pikiell’s Rutgers rebuild put up yet another memorable performance in a pivotal late season matchup vs. Indiana. Shortly after Baker accepted his senior night awards and recognition, he went to work torching the Indiana defense, scoring 20 points, dishing out 10 assists and drilling a career-high six three pointers in a game that the Scarlet Knights desperately needed to stay afloat in the late-season race to the NCAA Tournament.
For Baker, this game served as a microcosm for his entire career at Rutgers. Throughout his four seasons, Baker, time and time again, has stepped up to the plate in the most crucial of moments; think the Big Ten Tournament his freshman year, his clutch shot vs. Ohio State in his sophomore year and his game-winning shot vs. Nebraska in his junior year, to name a few moments. My personal favorite Geo Baker moment came in the 2019-2020 regular season finale at Purdue with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line. In that game, Baker hit clutch shot after clutch shot in front of a raucous Mackey Arena to secure the Scarlet Knights’ place in the not-to-be 2020 NCAA Tournament. It was one of the greatest clutch performance I have ever seen.
Baker declared for the 2021 NBA Draft while maintaining his eligibility and has until July 7 to decide if he will utilize his extra year of eligibility to return to Piscataway.

2. Jacob Young 23 points, 7 assists and dominant overtime period to clinch the NCAA Tournament @ Minnesota
During this past season, I covered the men’s team for the Daily Targum, and in nearly all of my game previews and recaps that I wrote, Jacob Young was worthy of recognition for his play. He, in my opinion, was the team’s most consistent player all season.
For all of his great moments from this season, Young’s finest hour came in the biggest of spots: at Minnesota in yet another regular season finale where an NCAA Tournament berth was on the line. Entering the game, the Scarlet Knights were staring at the very real possibility of falling down to the NCAA Tournament bubble after a humiliating loss to Nebraska. However, Young would refuse to let Rutgers go down on that Saturday afternoon. He finished with his second 20 point performance of the season and a masterful overtime period where he scored or assisted on 10 of the Scarlet Knights’ 14 points.
Young also made quite possibly the biggest play of the entire season in the final moments of regulation. Off of a Geo Baker turnover with 20 seconds to go, Minnesota guard Marcus Carr was running wide open, ahead of any Rutgers player on the fast break getting ready to jam in a go-ahead dunk that would’ve capped off an improbable Minnesota comeback in the final minutes. Instead, Young momentarily turned into an NFL cornerback as he jumped in front of Eric Curry’s pass to blow up the potential fastbreak opportunity and give Rutgers a chance to seal the game in overtime. I have attached the clip of Young’s steal below, the clip starts at the 18:45 mark.
Young was the first player to announce his departure from the program after the season, and after originally entering into the 2021 NBA Draft, Young decided to transfer to the University of Oregon for a sixth season of college basketball.

Ron Harper Jr. 28 points, 9 rebounds, 5 three-pointers vs. Illinois
It’s hard to understate the rhythm Ron Harper Jr. was in to start the season.
In the midst of a string of stellar performances to start the year, Harper Jr. turned in his best performance of the season and, in my opinion, the best performance by a Scarlet Knight this season. The outing came in an early-season top-25 matchup vs. No. 13 Illinois, a high-profile billing against a future No. 1 seed where Rutgers had everything to gain in terms of confidence and respect amongst the nation. In 35 minutes, Harper Jr. scored 28 points, grabbed nine rebounds and cashed in five three-pointers for a third consecutive game to guide Rutgers to a thrilling 91-88 victory over Illinois. The victory proved to be Rutgers’ signature win of the season and the crown jewel of the Scarlet Knights’ NCAA Tournament résumé when it came time to draw up NCAA Tournament brackets. Without Harper Jr.’s stellar performance, this signature win would have been possible.
Further, this game put the college basketball world on notice to two things. First, with a top-25 win, fans across the country began to recognize that Rutgers was a legit program that could make serious noise in the NCAA Tournament. Second, with the win and Harper Jr.’s performance, Harper Jr. was catapulted into All-American and Wooden Award talks, as he was following up on several impressive performances already to start the season. Harper Jr. made it as far as Late Season Top 20 Watch List for the Wooden Award, and he ended up finishing third team all-conference at the end of the season.
Harper Jr. has followed the same route as Geo Baker in declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility and has until July 7 to make a decision. Both he and Baker did not receive invitations to participate in the G League or NBA combine events.

Chapter One
Twenty years later
I won’t cry. I absolutely, positively will not cry.
Liliana Howe silently repeated the mantra as she rang the doorbell of her parents’ home in Norman, Oklahoma. She still had a key to the house, but her arms were full with two large white paper bags of her father’s favorite Tex-Mex from the taqueria over by Oklahoma University.
Brian and Stephanie Howe met at home for lunch every day, but it was rare for Lili to join them. She usually worked through lunch. But then, today was not a usual day, was it?
Her father answered the door. His gray eyes rounded in surprise. “Lili? Did we forget a lunch date?”
“No, Dad. I was in the neighborhood. Thought I’d surprise you with lunch from Miguelito’s.”
“Well, that’s nice.” He opened the screen door. “Come on in. Let me help you with those bags.”
He led her through the house back toward the kitchen. “That smells wonderful. This is a real treat, Liliana. Your mother doesn’t let me have Mexican too often.”
“It’s been too long since I’ve seen you guys.”
They walked into the kitchen to find her mother seated at the table staring intently at her computer. Typical Stephanie Howe. Always working. Without looking up, she said, “Stevenson has the best rating, but—”
“Look who’s here, honey,” Lili’s father interrupted.
Stephanie Howe finally glanced up, her thoughts obviously somewhere else, because she gazed at Lili as if she didn’t recognize her. Lili waved her fingers. “Surprise.”
“Oh.” Stephanie gave her head a little shake. “Lili. Hello. Did we forget a lunch date?”
Inwardly, Lili sighed. “No. I was in the mood for Mexican and I thought of Dad.”
“It’s not good for his cholesterol.”
“No, but once in a blue moon won’t hurt him. Dr. Derek told me that himself.”
She unloaded the bags, setting tacos, cheese enchiladas, refried beans, guacamole, and tortilla chips in the center of the table. Her mother brought plates and silverware from the cabinet. “Nevertheless, it’s nice to see you. It’s been too long. How are you, Lili? Have you recovered from tax season?”
“It’s definitely behind me,” she replied with a wry twist of her lips.
They all filled their plates. Not anxious to spill her own beans, Lili took an extra spoonful of refried and asked, “So, what do you hear from Derek?”
Her parents spent quite a bit of time talking about their renowned heart surgeon son. Nerves caused Lili to make a pig of herself on chips and guacamole, and she didn’t miss her mother’s judgmental frown.
Finally, after extolling Derek’s most recent peer recognition award, her father asked Lili what was new with her work and the moment was at hand.
She sipped her water, wished it were a beer, and summarized the sequence of events that had led her to this crisis point. Then she waited for them to react.
And she waited.
And waited.
Her parents shared one of those long, hard-to-read looks that made Lili’s stomach do a bit of a sick flip. Her father cleared his throat. “It’s an incredible tale.”
Her mother nodded. “Unbelievable.”
Lili sucked salt off her bottom lip. She hadn’t expected them to jump to their feet and vow to make the villains pay, but she’d thought they’d be angry on her behalf. Not . . . reserved.
Deep within her, despair kindled to life. They were her parents. She was counting on them. Nevertheless, she pressed ahead, calmly and logically laying out the approach she wanted to take and the assistance she needed from her mother and father.
Again, her parents shared one of those inscrutable looks. Lili’s heart began to pound. “I don’t know, Liliana,” her father said, rubbing the back of his neck. “It would be hard to fight them. They’re powerful people. I hate to say it because it’s not the way this country was supposed to work, but if a Normal Joe tries to go up against powerful people, most often he loses.
“I don’t want to see you get involved with making a charge against the police. That could turn nasty real fast. This cop . . . you said you think your bosses might have threatened him, too? He might be in an even tougher position than you.”
“But he lied, Dad! He falsified records.”
“But you have no proof of that, do you?”
“Just my word.” Isn’t that enough, Dad? At least for you?
“Maybe you should let things lie for a while. Give it some time. See how things work out. I think it’s simply too soon to call the governor and ask for a personal favor.”
That, Lili knew, was a no. A no and a verbal punch to the gut. After her father’s heroic efforts during Central Oklahoma’s most recent tornado outbreak, hadn’t the governor given Brian Howe her direct phone number and instructions to call if he ever needed help with anything? Lili could think of only one reason why he denied her request, and it made her want to toss her guaco.
“Maybe later on when everything settles down we can look at the situation again.”
He didn’t believe her. He didn’t believe in her. Neither did her mother. Lili’s heart twisted. She knew her parents. They wouldn’t come right out and say it, but she saw the significant looks they’d exchanged. Noticed the way they wouldn’t meet her eyes.
They believed she’d been driving drunk last night and the DUI was legit. They did not believe that she’d been set up.
They thought she’d lied.
Lied!
Hurt like nothing she’d ever known washed through her. Lili had never been a liar. Even as a child she’d been frightfully honest. Hadn’t that been her way of attempting to gain favor with her parents? Her brilliant older brother spun stories that had fooled her equally brilliant parents, but eagle-eyed little sister often knew the truth. And tattled. But always with the truth.
Always.
Yet now, they doubted her? They believed her so irresponsible that she would climb behind the wheel of a car after she’d been drinking, thus risking her life, the lives of others, and her license to practice her profession?
Good grief, did they think she’d embezzled money from senior citizens, too?
Lili swallowed hard. Inside, her heart was bleeding. I will not cry. I will not cry. She couldn’t believe this. What was she going to do now?
The only thing she was certain of was that she needed to leave. Immediately. Before she lost her enchiladas all over her mother’s Italian tile.
But Lili couldn’t make herself stand up. Her knees were too weak.
“I think your father is right.” Stephanie Howe reached over and patted Lili’s hand. “You know, dear, maybe this is for the best. You haven’t been happy in your work for some time now.”
“You never liked accounting,” her father added helpfully. “Perhaps it’s best that you look on this event as an opportunity.”
An opportunity? For what? Prison? Hysterical laughter bubbled up inside her, but Lili swallowed it down.
Lili’s mother rose from the table and removed a glass pitcher of iced tea from the refrigerator. She topped off her husband’s glass and changed the subject.
Lili didn’t really care about the plans for their next-door neighbor’s upcoming retirement party. Nor did she give a fig about OU football recruiting rumors. She spent the rest of the meal in a distracted fog.
Finally, having cleaned his plate—twice—Brian Howe set down his fork, wiped his mouth with a napkin, then checked his watch. “I’ve gotta run. I have a one o’clock conference call.”
Standing, he leaned over and pressed a kiss against Lili’s hair. “It was nice to see you, sweetheart. Don’t be such a stranger.”
Minutes later, he walked out the door and Stephanie was preparing to follow. “I hate to rush you, Lili, but I have office hours before my two o’clock lecture.”
Stephanie Howe taught advanced mathematics at OU. “That’s okay, Mom. Why don’t you go on? I’ll stay and load the dishwasher.”
“Thank you. You’ll lock up when you’re done?”
“I will.”
Her mother ducked into the master bedroom and returned a few moments later with her hair and teeth brushed and wearing new lipstick. On the way out the door, she paused. “Lili, things happen for a reason, and often, we don’t know what that reason is. Sometimes you simply need to give it a little time.”
She gave a little finger wave, then exited the house. Lili stood in the center of her parents’ kitchen, her arms hanging limply at her sides. She heard her mother’s car start, then back out of the driveway. Lili was alone. Alone and . . . lost.
Her parents didn’t believe her. Why not? What had she ever done to earn this lack of faith?
Nothing. She might not have been the smartest Howe sibling, but she’d made it a point to be the one who never screwed up. Derek the Favorite couldn’t say that. The time her brother had come within a phone call of getting an MIP, he’d deserved one. He and his trouble-magnet best friend had celebrated the no-hitter Mark had thrown in the regionals of the state baseball tournament by buying a fifth of bourbon with fake IDs and drinking themselves silly in a public park. Neither had gone near a car, but still.
Derek’s good luck was that their father’s administrative assistant’s husband was the chief of police. Dad had called the chief on Derek’s behalf and worked out a deal. Derek would pay the required fine and do the required community service, but it wouldn’t go on his record. Gotta protect the college applications, you know.
He’d called for Derek.
He won’t go near the phone for me.
Pressure filled Lili’s chest. It reminded her of that achy feeling she got when reading a novel where the protagonist discovers that her loved one has betrayed her. At that point in a book, Lili invariably skipped ahead to read the ending. Lili needed happy endings.
Satisfying endings didn’t work for her. She wanted happy-ever-after.
Once she knew the book was a safe read, the emotional grief she experienced eased. Then she invariably read the rest of the book backward. She was weird that way.
She’d never expected to be the wronged character in a real-life novel. Not with her parents cast as the betrayers, anyway. She wished she could skip to the end of this story. Maybe then she’d discover that her parents had believed her and believed in her all along and they had a really good reason for doing what they’d just done.
Yeah. Right. And I’ll win the next season of Who’s Got Talent because of my spreadsheet expertise.
Ordinarily, pity parties were not Liliana’s style. Today as she picked up her father’s plate from the table, she had a star-studded gala going on.
Mom and Dad didn’t believe her.
She took two steps toward the sink, then abruptly stopped. She dropped the plate.
Actually, she threw the plate. With both hands. Hard.
It smashed against the floor, shattering into dozens of pieces. Next she threw his glass and her mother’s plate and her own plate and glass. And Liliana realized she was panting as if she’d run five miles. Tears pooled in her eyes, but she blinked them away.
Then, because she was Liliana, she got a broom and dustpan and cleaned up her mess. About the time her mother would be pulling into the faculty parking lot at OU, Lili exited the house and locked the door behind her. Then she removed her parents’ house key from her key ring and dropped it through the mail slot in their front door.
As she walked down the sidewalk toward the slate-gray sedan she’d parked at the curb, the soon-to-be-retired neighbor drove into his driveway. They exchanged waves and Lili extended a trembling hand toward her car door.
“I absolutely, positively won’t cry.”
Maintaining her composure, she slid into the driver’s seat and calmly buckled the safety belt. She started her engine, shifted into drive, and slowly pulled away from her childhood home. She wouldn’t cry. She wouldn’t curse. She wouldn’t break any more dishes or squeal her tires in a fit of temper.
Lili wasn’t reckless. She didn’t act rashly and seldom lost control of her temper or emotions. She was logical and deliberate and controlled.
And honest. Totally honest.
Just the way a good accountant should be.
The faintest of sobs escaped her at the thought.
She’d broken her mother’s Fiesta. And yes, she had goosed the gas on her practical sedan, though not enough to squeal the tires. She wasn’t certain that her engine even had enough power to do it.
Her landlady’s voice echoed through her mind. I think this car’s get-up-and-go got up and went before it ever left the showroom floor.
“I bought it used,” Lili had defended.
Patsy Schaffer clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Oh, honey. Of course you did.”
Buying this car had been a good decision, Lili told herself now. A practical purchase. Cars lost value the moment they were driven off the lot. The last thing she needed was a big car payment.
Especially since as of today, she didn’t have a job.
She sucked in a shuddering breath. What am I going to do?
“Fight.” That’s what she needed to do. That’s what she’d come to her parents’ house to do. To gather her resources. To prepare for war. This injustice could not be allowed to stand!
So fine. She’d go into battle by herself. Work from the bottom up instead of the top down. She could do it. She was a grown-up. She didn’t need her parents to fight her battles. She was accustomed to doing things alone, wasn’t she?
She’d go back to the office. Today. Now. What could it hurt? They couldn’t fire her again. She’d demand to speak to Fred Ormsby, the other founding partner. She’d outline her case and demand that the situation be investigated by an independent party. Then she’d go to the police and do the same thing with them.
She could do this. She was strong.
She was scared.
By the time she pulled onto I-35 headed north to her office building in downtown Oklahoma City, she’d lost the battle to hold back tears. Soon she’d soaked four tissues and was on to drowning her fifth.
Then, just as she signaled her intention to take the upcoming exit, a motorcycle screamed by, passing on the right. Only by the grace of God did she avoid hitting him.
In that instant, the blaze of Lili’s temper evaporated her fears. If she’d had another dinner plate, she’d have thrown it at the fool. She was furious that the rider had endangered himself by riding recklessly without a helmet. She was incensed at her former friend and mentor in the firm and at his criminal connections in the police department who were able to create false DUI charges out of nothing.
And her parents . . . Lili swallowed hard. Her parents. For them, she had no words.
Downtown, she found a parking spot two blocks from her building, so she took it. She grabbed a fresh tissue, flipped down the visor mirror, and wiped away mascara tracks. She blew her nose, put on fresh lipstick, and pinched some color into her wan cheeks.
Drawing two calming, bracing breaths, she stepped outside and prepared to go to war.
Lili marched up the street. You can do this. You can do this. Right is on your side. Justice will prevail.
She was halfway to her building’s front door when the problem occurred to her. They’d taken away her credentials. She wouldn’t be allowed upstairs.
They’d taken her credentials. They’d taken her reputation. They’d taken her license. A great yawning sense of despair opened up inside her. I’m powerless.
The door to her building opened and her former mentor and the firm’s other founding partner stepped outside. Okay. Okay. Her luck was turning. Here was an opportunity. Approaching them on a public street wouldn’t be her first choice, but the fact that they’d come out of the building right at this particular moment was a sign, was it not?
She took one more step forward, then stopped abruptly. A third person had joined them. A third person smiled and laughed and flirted up at the two men old enough to be her father.
Tiffany Lambeau.
Lili’s nemesis.
When Tiffany had followed Mark Christopher to the University of Hawaii, Lili had hoped Norman, Oklahoma, had seen the last of her. Instead, Tiffany had come home with an MBA and a “broken” heart quickly healed by a prominent banker. Now Tiffany was on the prowl again, and she’d started working at the firm late last year as a consultant. She knew everyone of consequence in town— maybe the entire state—and she’d quickly weaseled her way into visiting the corner offices. Often.
Lili watched the trio turn the other direction and stroll up the sidewalk, arm in arm, and she had no doubt that she was looking at Ormsby, Harbaugh, and Stole’s newest partner.
The guacamole in Lili’s stomach made a threatening rumble. “Oh yes,” she murmured. “Talk about a sign.”
She could possibly face the powers that be at the firm. She might even be able to hold her own while presenting her case to the cops. But Tiffany Lambeau? Forget about it.
Some parts of high school a girl simply couldn’t leave behind.
Lili pivoted and returned to her car. She thumbed the lock, opened the door, slid inside, and calmly fastened her seat belt. She sat with her hands on the wheel for a full five minutes, the events of the day running through her mind like a bad movie. How many times today had she asked herself, What am I going to do?
Now, finally, at—she glanced at the clock on her dash— 2:27 p.m., she knew the answer. “That’s it. I’m done. I quit.”
Lili switched on her ignition, shifted her car into drive, and spoke her life-changing decision aloud. “I’m going to join the Tornado Alleycats.”

Q&A with Emily March
Q: What will newbies to Eternity Springs find unique in your work?
A:         My recurring character, the wise-woman Celeste Blessing, is written in such a way that the reader asks “Is she or isn’t she an angel.” My answer is that it’s up to the reader to decide. Spirituality is individual, so I think Celeste’s spirituality should be, too.
Q: Do you listen to music while you write? What are some tunes on your playlist?
A:         I listen to movie soundtracks: Last of the Mohicans, Braveheart, Lord of the Rings, DragonHeart, Gettysburg, Somewhere in Time, Dances with Wolves. I also listen to Celtic spa music and classical piano and cello duets.
Q: What is your favorite scene in A Stardance Summer?
A:         I love the Fourth of July scene with the Callahan family, all the Eternity Springs crowd, and fireworks—both in the sky and in the treehouse. :)
Q: What is your favorite scene in A Stardance Summer?
A:         I read an article in our electric co-op magazine about a camping club like the Tornado Alleycats. I visited one of the campouts and knew I had to write them into a book.
Q: If you could switch places with one of your characters from this book who would it be and why ?
A:         Any of the Callahan women would be just fine with me. Can’t think of anything better than to be the wife of one of those men.
Q: Describe A Stardance Summer in 5 words.
A:         Camping with the Callahans—Yum!
Q: We all love books, what are some of your favorite ones?
A:         I’m a huge fan of the Andy Carpenter series by David Rosenfelt. I recommend the audio because Grover Cleveland does the narration and he’s fabulous! I read everything Mary Balogh writes. I adore Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series and her Alpha and Omega series. Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden books.  Susan Elizabeth Philips. I listed authors instead of books because I think in authors and series instead of individual books. :)
Q: What are you working on currently writing-wise?
A:         I’ve just finished the next Eternity Springs book, THE FIRST KISS OF SUMMER, and I’ll be starting another Eternity Springs Christmas book next.
Q: Do you have a favorite genre? Is it the same genre you prefer to write?
A:         I am fickle in my literature love. I will read thrillers for a while, then glom historical romances, then get hooked on romantic suspense, then I might venture into fantasy.
Q: Do certain themes and ideas tend to capture your writer’s imagination and fascinate you?
A:         I write about friendship and family, love and laughter. Everything I write flows from those four things.
Q: How do you balance long-term thinking vs. being nimble in today's market?
A:         I don’t believe in trying to be nimble. I think you learn the crafter and write the book you want to write. That’s how to get the special “something” that makes a book fabulous. I don’t believe in chasing trends. Eventually, the trend will come to you, and if you’re writing what you love to write, the readers will find you.
Q: How do you find readers in today's market?
A:         That’s my publisher’s job. I write the best book I can write and then write the next best book I can write. That’s how I’ll find readers.
Q: Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?
A:         I meet with three other writers once a year for plot group. We help each other plot our books. I will say, for example, I need an Eternity Springs Christmas book. I want the guy to be a rancher, but that’s all I have. Then we brainstorm until we come up with a kernel of an idea that appeals to me. I flesh it out from there.
Q: What's on the top of your TBR pile right now?
A:         I’m reading Nora Roberts’ Come Sundown.
Q: Tell me a little about the characters in A Stardance Summer.
A:         In A Stardance Summer, I use one of my favorite tropes—in love with her brother’s best friend. I tie my Callahan Brother’s trilogy to my Eternity Springs series in the male lead, Brick Callahan. He didn’t meet his real father until he was a teenager and because of that, he has some things to prove. It’s important to him to build something on his own, independent of his family and their money. So, he establishes an RV Resort and his business grow from there. Lili has no idea that her teenage crush owns the RV resort where she flees to spend the summer with members of a female camping club, the Tornado Alleycats after her family and business partners betray her.
Q: Where’s the story set? How much influence did the setting have on the atmosphere/ characters/ development of the story?
A:         A Stardance Summer is set in Eternity Springs Colorado. It is the thirteenth book of the series so the setting is well established and very much a character in the series. Eternity Springs is where broken hearts come to heal.
Q: If you had to write your memoir in five words, what would you write?
A:         Family, Faith, and Texas Aggies
Q: How often does your muse distract you from day to day minutiae?
A:         Fairly often. I am a creative person, which means my family calls me a ditz.
Q: What do readers have to look forward to in the future from you?
A:         A short story about Brick and Lili’s wedding this fall that shows more of the Callahan Brother’s reunion—something my readers have been asking me to write. Then, THE FIRST KISS OF SPRINGS publishes March 2018.
Q: Would you prefer tea or coffee?
A:        Coffee. Definitely coffee. But, I love ginger-tumeric tea in the afternoon.
Q: For those who may not be familiar with the series, can you tell a bit about this magical town that seems to know just how to heal people? Did you ever think up a history for Eternity Springs?
A:         Yes, the history is recounted in the first book in the series, Angel’s Rest. Eternity Springs is a former mining town in the Colorado Rockies. It is isolated and away from ski areas and was dying until it’s very own angel moved to town. Celeste Blessing definitely and angel investor who began the revitalization of the town. Whether she’s a spiritual angel or not is up to the reader to decide.
Q: Did you have any struggling moments writing Lili and Brick's story?
A:         Well, the research was a struggle. Since I believe in the saying Write What You Know, I figured I’d better go sleep in a tent because I hadn’t done that since I was a kid.
It was a struggle to leave my Texas home in July when the temperature is 106 and drive to a camp high in the beautiful Colorado Rockies. I did sleep in a tent. It had had a wood floor, a bathroom with a jetted bathtub, steam shower, and heated towels and heated floor. It had a king-sized bed and luxury sheets, a pot-belly stove for heat and our hosts took orders for cocktails at happy hour and delivered them to our tent. Gourmet meals were served family style with a handful of our fellow campers. During the day I struggled to decide between which type of massage and facial I wanted at the spa tent. This, my friends, was glamping. Glamorous camping.
In fact, I think I must go back and struggle through more research. :)
Q: Can you paint us a picture of your workspace?
A:         I spend about half my time working in a private office on the second floor in a shared office building. There is grocery store on the first floor so it makes picking up dinner on the way home from work easy. I have a wall of windows that overlook the Trinity River, the Trinity Trail biking/walking/running trail, and the Fort Worth zoo. I can see the giraffes from my office. I have an electric standing desk so I move up and down throughout the day because it’s easier on my body. There is an exposed iron beam that runs on one wall, floor-to-ceiling, that is just the perfect size to hold a paperback, so I’ve stacked my books there—by color blocks rather than by title. I have a leather recliner for times I prefer to write in that position. I have one vertical bookcase and one horizontal cube storage bookcase.
The other half of my work time is spent at Possum Kingdom Lake—silly name, but gorgeous place—writing on the lakefront deck or sitting in a lounge chair in a hidden arbor beneath a huge wisteria and surrounded by grapevines, honeysuckle, blackberries, and roses. And bumble bees when the wisteria is blooming. Hummingbirds. Lizards. We have lots of lizards, but they keep the mosquito population down so we love them.
Q: Tell us five words that describe you best.
A:         Wife, Mom, Nana, Sister, Writer.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A:        My husband’s Tuscan chicken. It beats out Mexican food by a hair.
Q: How did the idea for the cover come about?
A:         I suggested a lake and my editor suggested a hammock. I always have a dog on the cover because dogs are very much a part of each of my books.
Q: And the title?
A:         Stardance Ranch was already established in the series, so the title came from there. I love the word “stardance” and it makes my imagination soar.
Q: What's the story behind why and how you became an author?
A:         I learned how to tell a story from my father. He was a fabulous storyteller and I grew up listening to tales of his childhood and youth and adventures in WWII. I wanted to tell stories of my own, except my life was boring compared to his. So I made my stories up. Nothing else to do then than become a fiction author. :)
Q: Any ideas for another novel?
A:         I’m writing a Christmas book next. Plot group is in a few weeks. That’s all I have right at the moment :)
