okay so. i challenged myself to try and draw some snakes and try to capture the features i want to stand out for them. i wanted to see if i could make them all look distinct but where its obvious they look extremely similar.

heres the main lineup but i want to get into design elements for them as well as some personal headcanons.

FIRST! bibo.

okay so. i'm going to toot my own horn here. i think his beard looks so fire and i did a good job. i imagine this design is around the portable ops era... not much else to say because most of the interesting stuff (at least to me) comes from the differences the others have from him.

for venom snake, i made him look like big boss but Something's Off. in the game people often (notably huey and the boss' ai) don't recognize him as big boss for a few seconds. an imperfect replica because you cannot get that close with plastic surgery. i made the fat distribution on his neck a bit different from bibo's because i imagine the way that the human body configures itself is hard to change. if you noticed the little snake-tongue-shaped-hair-doohickeys, he is the only one with a slightly different shape. it's a genetic thing, you wouldn't get it. just thought that was silly. his hair texture is different, too. can u tell i like him a lot. also, my favorite detail might be his different nose shape. they never got bibo's nose right i guess. in mgsv, he actually has a bit of a downturned nose, and i honestly don't think i captured that enough.

SNAVID! the most obvious difference here is his nose. he broke it as a kid lol. i love headcanons. there's not as much to say about him as with venom, but i can say that he is incredibly handsome and i like him. i think he is cute. was he free yesterday? if so i would like to have dinner yesterday with him yesterday. well... i will say that out of this specific lineup i think he looks the most like good old dad. which is awful and i feel bad for him.

FINALLY: LIQUID!!!!!!!

i gave him his canonical sharp nose and high cheekbones! i based a lot of his features off how he looked as a kid so he really has little shit vibes about him. he also has thinner eyebrows, and i headcanon that he does them himself lol. he has less sideburny sideburns than his brother. his eyelids are also smaller. he also does look kinda like kaz so its plausible that he tricked dave! yippee! i also like drawing his hair. its such a great hairstyle. it reminds me of a lion's mane.

Hyrule couldn’t really place why he didn’t make people aware of his… background. He wasn’t ashamed of the faeries nor the way he was raised, but people had their assumptions about them and their magic. He always assumed that people would take those assumptions over his word and would end up being disrespectful to both him and his sisters. But you on the other hand were not. He couldn’t even really pinned when you started gifting him things but he has especially fond memories of you giving him milk tea and honey after particularly magic-draining battles or you sharing fruit with him when you had spare. In hindsight, that fae part of him latched to the idea that you cared so deeply about him through the mundane. Perhaps that’s why those were the memories he held closest. But there were more subtle things that he began to pay attention to. Like how you drank mead with him despite not being fond of it or singing for him at his request. The ladder making him especially flustered for reasons he couldn’t even pinpoint. Sure, you were the beauty of the world personified, but that didn’t change that this was all perfectly platonic behaviour. But as you got more comfortable, he only dug himself a deeper grave in his own feelings. Every flower you gave him, every please and thank you, every promise you made. He braided your hair while muttering blessings, embroidered your clothes with enchantments and he’d take the stars from the skies because their light would highlight you perfectly. The others teased him for his love sickness, but to see you smile, to hear the blood rush through you, that was worth it. Happy Halloween, everyone! The only good thing about Fall. (And it was somewhat ruined this year because ofc there was an artic blast of doom. I live in the upper south, and it's 34 degrees this morning wtf. Like holy SHIT the poor trick or treaters...)

Anyway, ignoring my Fall slander (you can love Fall btw, no hate towards the people who do. I mainly just hate ragweed season tbh) Willow is pretending to scare Hunter, and Hunter is pretending to be scared. Kinda like

This drawing was such a challenge but I'm happy with how it came out in the end. Main things were the arm positioning and hands for both Willow and Hunter. In animation school Im being taught the importance of silhouettes, so I actually posed them differently then I would've if I hadn't learned that as much yet. It's more noticeable with Willow then Hunter. I've always struggled with hands touching the face due to arm positioning, not exactly sure why that is but it's always something I've had trouble with. No joke, for Hunter I referenced a Steven Universe screenshot, and for Willow, I referenced one of Belos' childhood painting memories.

Btw I do not want to see any slander of Willow's costume in the comments. (/hj) She looks like a silly goofy goober skrunkily scrimbo it's amazing.

Fun Fact: Sometimes when I'm bored I go through a lot of video game instrumental music and challenge myself to think of a TOH drawing idea from the song. Its EXTREMELY rare when I end up actually making one of those ideas. This is one of those rare cases. I got the idea for this drawing while listening to music from an old Viteral World called Jumpstart (anyone remember Jumpstart lol?) It was the main Windy Hollows theme. What the drawing ended up being was NOTHING like I first invisioned in terms of posing, (still had the whole scaring each other playfully idea) but tbh I think the end product was a lot better. Yippie.

Yerm I haven’t been super happy with my drawings as of late, and I’m not stoked about this one but the colours I actually love a lot like woah,,, how’d I manage that,, I actually don’t know lol.

Adonis, being a term used for attractive young men, comes from a Greek myth of some guy who was an arrogant asshole that died, came back to life, and achieved immortality, he is also very handsome. Of course I went ballistic because I was like “holy shit I can TOTALLY project tf2 onto this”

I’m maybe kind of writing a one shot under the same name about Scout and Snipers opposing views on respawn and dying…. Perchance…. In which Scout thinks respawn is this cool amazing thing, and death is just something that’s now inconsequential to him so he doesn’t think twice about pulling off stupid stunts. Sniper thinks it stupid to not fear/avoid dying even if they come back, because death and the pain that comes with it is still a very real thing to him, especially with him being a hunter it is something he doesn’t take for granted and is important to him.

I will say there are very few (serious) ideas I play around with for them that stick beyond being a “this would make sense for them I think, yeah” because they are mostly just silly goober guys to me… Like little gun wielding dolls that I can pose. In my head I think neither of them would TRULY give two shits about dying beyond the annoyance of getting one uped by an enemy. But if they were serious guys ™️ to me thru and thru I would totally project the above idea into them fully.

Here are some alternative versions of the image I didn’t like as much but were pretty okay. I liked the yellow being the font but it’s just tooooo hard to read unfortunately, especially from far away. I also don’t hate the sort of darkish blood Orange, but I like keeping it down to just three colours.

And honestly???? I’m not totally sure how to give tips— but I love, love, love unhinged characters in media, so I’ll use them as examples

(long rant below lol)

I’ve always been a big fan of silly, ‘crazy’ characters in animated movies and cartoons. I grew up on Batman the Animated Series and the original Teen Titans, which were full of silly, fun tragic characters.

Don’t get me wrong, i love a good edge-lord— but as a tot i thought the colorful, theatrical, insane bad guys were more fun to watch than the big scary serious ones (ESPECIALLY if they had a good villain song. A+ good shit)

And not just bad guys!! There are a ton of unhinged good/neutral characters that i absolutely adore.

My personal brand of “Unhinged” or “Crazy” characters definitely leans on comedy. That’s what i enjoy seeing and reading! I personally like it because it can help keep a story fresh and interesting. There’s an element of surprise and unpredictability with what a character might do, and i love that!!

I also really enjoy a touch of feral behavior in my unhinged characters. The lack of clarity and the danger that imposes can be a very fun tool to use, no matter the character’s moral compass. (I’m feral for feral behavior lol)

And impulses. Whether a character has a few screws loose or is generally a goober, they like to act on impulses. This often goes hand-in-hand with comedy, and that’s something I enjoy!! We get a lot of moments like that in Rise, and that was one of my favorite parts of that TMNT iteration.

But as far as writing goes, it’s been tricky for me. All of the characters I grew up or love have been visual— trying to find a good balance for reading has been a puzzle I’ve been figuring out as I go.

I read a lot manga (lol nerd) and comics, and I love how thoughts/dialog are depicted. Especially the really dramatic or impactful moments. (I’d add examples but I’m already at the Tumblr image limit LAME)

As strange as it sounds, I try to capture that “impactful visual” style in my writing. If I had ANY advice on writing unhinged characters, pay attention to pacing—

Short. Fast. A calculating thought. Perhaps a run on sentence that lacks punctuation to represent the rushing and disorganized thought process. A question? An answer with little thought. Is this moment amusing; describe how. Is it upsetting; describe how. Are the thoughts starting to scatter? M aybe s o…

Big moment statement.

Action or plan of next big move. Flow should never seem too uniform. Even in normal writing. Don’t be afraid of accentuating— but don’t overdo it. Remember, unhinged characters are impulsive. Have fun with that.

Just as a quick and dirty summary— when it comes to unhinged characters, I like to use comedy, feral behavior, and acting on impulses. I also like to keep it as visually appealing as possible for characters to give the eyes a little treat after reading walls of text. I like to use fun text formatting to help with the fun too (But don’t overdo it! Don’t make it feel like a chore to read) (<- says the girl who goes into way too much details sometimes lmao whoops)

But ultimately— have FUN!!! Unhinged characters are fun, so make sure you have fun writing/drawing/creating them!!

Maybe as y/n follows butter roll around, butter roll introduces y/n to stuff aaaand soon other cookies of darkness notice y/n and when they discover y/n is their first creation...well...stuff ensues. Can imagine y/n just curiously looking at things and wanting to touch everything. Soft dress? Touch. Cool scythe? Touch. Silly mushroom head that looks squishy? Touch.

Cookies Of Darkness with a curious reader

-platonic scenario-

Part 1 part 3

Butter Roll was obviously going to show you off to his fellow researchers and the Cookies Of Darkness! I mean he made a cookie with all of the ingredients unlike some cookies

Butter Roll definitely felt some superiority over Dark Enchantress and Matcha Cookie due to this

Well this obviously didn’t bother Dark Enchantress but man did it bother Matcha

Butter Roll was bragging about you non stop! It was VERY annoying

But the thing was you were less of a bragger, more on the quiet side but also on curious side which was a bonus for Matcha since she could get you to hate Butter Roll if she tried hard enough

But the first time you met Matcha you touched her staff, now granted you got a little electric shock but still, you were curious to see how to felt!

Now when you met Pomegranate Cookie you wanted to touch her mirror, but everyone and I mean EVERYONE said not to since that would be a horrible idea, even Pomegranate herself said it was a bad idea

So you just patted her on the head, and her hair was surprisingly soft!

Now Licorice Cookie was a different story, he wanted to ignore you, but you were too persistent!

Licorice set his staff down one day and you wanted to see how his staff felt. It felt smooth yet rough, and when you tried to pick it up you were very surprised to how heavy it was

When Licorice came back he snatched back his staff and held it with ease. I guess he’s stronger than he looks…

Now Poison Mushroom Cookie was very very chill with you, their head looked squishy so you squished it

The two of you are now friends, no questions asked

Now there are three cookies who will occasionally stop by, like Dark Enchantress Cookie

You felt her horns once but she snapped at you. So you kinda stay away from her

Now there’s Red Velvet Cookie, when he stops by it’s to either give a status update or to drop of ingredients

But when you first saw him, you wanted to see what his cake arm felt like

Now granted he was a little aggressive with you at first but once a panicked Butter Roll explained to him that you were freshly baked, Red Velvet calmed down

So whenever you want to touch his cake arm you have to ask, most of the time he’ll say no but if your lucky you will get a yes

And then there’s Affogato Cookie. He doesn’t come around much but when he does it’s a little chaotic

He’s sly. Very sly

The rest of the Cookies Of Darkness mainly Licorice try to keep you two away from each other.

Affogato will probably try to make you believe that he’s the only one worth listening to.

But if the two of you are alone, Affogato will let you feel the fur of his outfit, or the silk of his sleeves

But you do hear from Poison Mushroom that there are some more Cookies Of Darkness you’ve not met… you wonder if you’ll ever meet them
