The biggest issue that I have with g5 is all of the unanswered questions about what happened during the time frame between g4 and g5. The biggest ones are:

What happened to the alicorns? 

What happened to the other sapient creatures? Donkeys, mules, zebras, horses, cattle, sheep, buffalo/bison, deer/reindeer, hippos, yaks, griffons, hippogriffs/seaponies, dragons, Changelings, kirin, anthro cats, diamond dogs, anthro birds, etc etc.

How was Equestria able to function with the magic gone? And who's been raising the sun and moon this whole time if the magic has been gone? Is it someone outside Equestria?

They're never going to answer any of those questions.

The only reason why I watched MYM all the way through is because I was waiting for a proper explanation for all of the questions the movie didn't answer. I think the majority of us were under the impression that the TV show or comics would provide those answers.

Well... they didn't. And, let's face it, they probably never will. And if they do, the explanation will be bad.

The explanation they gave for the Unity Crystals and ponies dividing in the comics was... dumb.

Sunny Starscout: But then one day, a magical accident happened! An Earth pony got hurt by a unicorn! Everypony started fighting with each other! The princess, wanting to protect her kingdom and all of the ponies in it, decided to put all magic into three crystals before it got out of hoof. After that, Earth ponies only felt safe with other Earth ponies. Unicorns with unicorns. And Pegasi of a feather flock together. The ponies galloped, trotted, and flew as far as they could with their crystals, settling in what would become Zephyr Heights, Bridlewood, and Maretime Bay. And that's where they lived forever... until now.

Spike in the Isle of Scaley:

Spike: Twilight's reign was peaceful for many moons until Opaline Arcana appeared. She'd been banished from Skyros.

Sunny Starscout: The Alicorn land?

Spike: She wanted to rule all ponies. She thought that Alicorns were superior.

Spike: But my friends were strong. Our friendship had created such powerful magic that Opaline had to resort to dark ways to overthrow Equestria. She even attacked the dragons to transform into a Fire Alicorn!

Spike: The crystals were created to hide the magic of Equestria in them. All of pony magic. And all of dragon magic inside the Dragon Stone. Twilight sent us here to protect us and put a spell around Equestria to hide it from Opaline.

G5 is basically implying that Opaline was a much bigger threat than all of the other major villains the G4 characters had faced, which I don't believe for a second. Even after she powered herself up with the dragon's magic.

There's no implication that Opaline had mind controlled and used the dragons as an army back when she faced Twilight and her friends. Twilight and her friends could've just used their Element of Harmony powers to take away Opaline's magic, or turn her to stone, etc etc.

The series finale showed that they didn't need the physical elements or tree to access that magic...

So why didn't they use it on Opaline?

I think the moment where I started to become disappointed in G5 was when they released that TYT short showing the dragons before they were properly introduced in Chapter 6.

And when I saw how horribly they were designed, I just got angry.

And then I saw how they looked in the main show, and my disappointment grew...

And then I saw that Spike had the same horrible model as the other dragons (with minor changes) and I wanted to throw up XD

And then I finished Chapter 6 of MYM, and I realized that I had wasted my precious time on G5.

MLP cancellation rant

So apparently Gen 5 is getting cancelled.  I must say that despite liking the show I am not all that surprised.  In my opinion, despite the great ideas and characters, the creators did not do a very good job delivering it.  I mean there are many reasons why I think this generation did not do as good as it could have done.

For starts, they connected it too much to Gen 4.  Gen 4 was great.  Most people can agree and i feel the creators wanted to continue to use that popularity even without the characters.  This created a lot of confusion and contradictions in the lore of the two generations.  I feel it would have been better if the Gen 4 cast was more of a cameo and not canon in the Gen 5 world. Even with the canon they never really addressed anything.  What drove the ponies to split?  What barrier is around Equestria?  Was it up the whole time despite there being no magic?  Was the reason Twilight created the crystals because she was alone?  Why couldn’t they defeat Opaline themselves?  There was so much that didn’t make sense or hardly touched on.  

Heck, the movie made way for plenty of potential story arcs or plot points.  Why was Izzy alone?  Does it relate to her ability to see a pony's luminescence?  How did the pegusi accept the royal family so fast?  Was there any doubt afterward?  If they wanted a connection with Gen 4 why didn't they include iconic locations?  Why can Sunny shift from Pony to Alicorn?  

Another thing is the fact that the show was initially 2 separate types of shows.  Make Your Mark and Tell Your Tale.  This, I feel, was a really bad move.  One show was serious and actually had a run time to tell a somewhat detailed story.  While the other is purely fun and something to enjoy.  They used these shows horribly.  TYT spoiled things.  MYM was not of good quality at first.  TYT is only 5 minutes long.  MYM took forever to get each chapter.  TYT was fun and silly.  MYM was more serious and dark.  With all this, it is no wonder it didn’t work.  But then they made it worse by getting rid of one of them and it was the story telling aspect of the two.  With only TYT there was NO WAY they could tell a good story with the EXTREMELY short run time.  Even shows that are 15 minutes long really struggle with having a good story or solid stream between episodes.  5 minutes was WAY to short.  I feel if they just changed the length to be longer they might have had a better chance.  Making the character act a bit more like their MYM counterpart would have helped too.  But no.  they just had to keep the pace and silly style which didn’t work for a long serious story.  I am not even sure they will be able to wrap it up well.

There are probably more things that went wrong and I am sad that these great characters and ideas were wasted but hopefully, Gen 6 will be better.  One thing I would love to see is a complete rewrite of Gen 5.  One that is more independent from Gen 4.  Like I said I love the characters and believe there were many good ideas and potential but the connection with Gen 4 just kind of ruined it.  My opinion only.

was kind of hoping g5 would explain where tf the rest of the pony population is, honestly. its hard to believe that every unicorn/pegasi/earth pony was compressed down into their respective towns/cities.

mym had a rough time juggling it's story so im not surprised this was never fleshed out more but--if they had the chance in a future series--i would love to see that. getting more into it below the cut (loosing it i fear):

back when we only had the movie i had a theory that there had been a major conflict that ultimately ended in the pony populations plummeting; and that ultimately fueling twilights decision to seal away their magic in the crystals--which would lead to the races separating after the fact. eventually, by some form or fashion, the crystals were separated (maybe stolen....?) between bridlewood, maretime bay, and zephyr heights.

however opaline being introduced in mym tripped up this theory to the point where it's pretty obvious that's not what happened--or at least not exactly. discord alludes to something too terrible to describe in the comics so there's that? (also "mane-ificent 7"??? lmfao)

not even mentioning how this page utterly destroys the "magic removal resulting in pony exodus" theory; because it seems unified-equestria was able to exist for a while longer after the crystals were created:

perhaps opaline instigated more conflict in the following years (after the mane 6 have died off...?) which ultimately resulted in magic failing the ponies. if not her, then im sure the hard work the of our g4 girlies slowly faded because the equestria became too comfortable, and perhaps stopped fighting for unity. (another point i remember appreciating when we only had the movie to go off of:)

if so, that then brings up the question of HOW DID THE CRYSTAL GET SPLIT BETWEEN THE RACES BEFORE THE MOVIE???

did argyle find the earth pony piece during a history excursion or was it passed down to him??? how did alphabittle get the respective unicorn piece??? the pegasus crystal was literally a part of queen haven's crown--was there a point where all pony types swiped the crystals following the failing of unity to PREVENT the other races from using it against them???

but then???? we had the whole thing with elder flower and her fuckass story about a bat and web and whatever tf that implies that the time passed between g4 and g5 is way shorter than i anticipated??? also "opaline was here the whole time guys we swear. dont you remember our good friend opaline??? the opaline who was CHILDHOOD FRIENDS with LUNA and CELESTIA in SKYROS???"

so maybe the equestria we've seen so far (as of chapter 6) is just a pocket of the current pony population, but if so, does that also imply that the other settlements are ALSO hostile towards other pony types? because wouldn't the unity crystals have been unrestricting magic to some extent (depending on how many ponies/creatures were collectively getting along)? the simplest answer is that the writers failed to think ahead but i wanna give them the chance to reveal a little more because there are still MAJOR things we dont understand.

Pardon me, but I really loved your thoughts on g5 MYM chapter 4, have you seen up to chapter 6 yet? Did you ever write down your thoughts? I'm sorry if I cause stress, I just wanted to pick your brain about how the climax of the show went?

I'm a long time g4 lover, I think I joined after "a Canterlot wedding" came out. I have.. a personal distaste with g5 chapter 4 and on. I was just hoping to see what you thought about it all.

It's no problem ^^ Maybe I can do another write up on it as I did sometime. But I may at least give a short answer on why I haven't put one up even though it's been a few months: Spike's inclusion in the final chapter kinda broke all remaining (...Which to be fair was already small to begin with) suspension of disbelief that I had about the connection between G4 and G5. I could probably explain more in detail if I do another write up about it. But I will say it was the last straw personally when taking any connection to G4 seriously in G5

They try to excuse it I know by Spike conveniently barely remembering (Some say through some kind of spell or whatever reason) anything aside from Twilight. But that's hardly the only thing about Spike's inclusion that has killed any sort of serious speculation about the G4-G5 connection for me.

I'll at least say I'm glad Opaline got a real comeuppance. Though it was also a shame Secrets of Starlight ended up being a total clickbait title that had barely anything to do with Starlight Glimmer. I think there was some fun moments in the final chapter, but yeah... The way they included Spike is a big reason I went quiet about G5. It just broke me on too many levels.

im just confused as to why have 6 whole chapters of 'we are strengthening the magic twilight made!' and then 'well its all gone!'

personally i think it could have gone a better route with a better finale (not that chapter 6 is the finale) :/ opaline was a villain with lots of potential but horrible execution. reduced to comedic relief villain that randomly actually takes her motivations seriously! she was lazy for 6 whole chapters, until a halloween episode and suddenly!! she's a little less lazy! yay!? no depth to her character whatsoever. she was jealous of celestia and luna and apparently she wasnt even a fire alicorn to begin with???

i think having most of make your mark into a summarized exposition for the inital movie, would have set up something a bit better for opaline as a villain and our characters as heros! the "we did it mrs obama, we got rid of pony racism!" is so... stupid i think that idea was bad and that's okay bad ideas are fine to have, but imagine opaline being a villain in the movie instead of not being relevant at all!

we get introduced to all of our main characters right off the bat, and focus on opaline's peak and fall as a villain so we have our central antagonist, because the preaching of unity imo goes ultimately no where. i like the idea of "when you have friends, you're never truly alone", but at the same time... them splitting up to defend their own homes when they could defeat opaline together as a unit makes so much more sense and its the reason they lost! they were not as united as they claimed! they're not even symbols of unity, in the slightest!

in their defense, all bg ponies are dumb as rocks, so :/ go figure no one would actually stand behind the "keepers of the crystals" even in times of need

make your mark could have been about ensuring opaline didn't return, exploring new kinds of magic, deepening bonds within our main cast and with our main cast and their other relationships, creating character we can care about their success instead of expecting deus ex magica to fix everything for them! giving them a reason and a will to fight, give their friendship and confidence boost speeches weight. make ANYTHING mean something. and you can have "filler" and non-lore related episodes in that and still have a good story! i literally know its possible... g4 did it... but g5 main case dont really grow as characters, i mean, Zipp is allegedly supposed to be training to be queen or preparing for it, and yet we never see that. We know she doesnt want to, but we know she might have to. You could literally parallel a Frozen dynamic where the older sister gives up her reign just because she can!

We could see Pipp train to be queen, Zipp becoming queen like accidentally, or someone new entirely trying to take over Zephyr heights as a low stakes antagonist. (like sprout)

We could have a potential Opaline reform, or attempt at reform that ultimately fails and we seal her away for good! it would give her a chance because Sunny seems like the type to at least give anyone a chance.

I talked with a friend and was like 'oh instead of introducing sparky during mym, introduce him in the movie as a dragon egg opaline had captured and he had hatched DURING the movie, and hitch could have rescued him and maybe felt a greater attachment bc he SAVED sparky from possible death!! kids like drama and angst too! it doesnt have to be cushy, i mean shit chapter 6 pushes the envelope a little bit i think!

i could literally think up what kind of story beats and what we could have done all night for g5,

except for tell your tale.... 5 min youtube shorts that sometimes have an explanation for mym details is unforgivable and needs to just be gonezo. a lot of people have netflix. share mym clips on youtube if you need to so badly. or, if you have to tyt so bad, dont have them do things... that never get explained in mym... or have tyt be a sub product of mym, where something happened in this mym chapter, oh we will lightly reference it in tyt! but tyt is more focused on lighter character bonding or even background characters! like holy shit! the possibilites!!

watch me make a "what we could have done better: mlp:ang" video with my shitty mic and piss poor editing abilities! i stg.... im inspired... i have so much hope for this show but it has just... it falls a little flat where it could be greater!

and dont get me wrong! g5 has a lot of great moments! i like the relationship hitch and misty have, despite how they barely ever talk to each other in the show (sunny, zipp, and pipp are our REAL main characters, lets me real)

i love the sisters' relationship with each other, i love how izzy and pipp are creatives of different types, how hitch and zipp are sleuths of different types, how they're protective and reluctant in similar ways, i like how sunny always wants to inspire others and is kind of sassy and lowkey shades ponies when she's trying to give the good word. I love all that stuff. its not as bad as i tend to make it seem because im a world class hater but g5 is not BAD, i just think it could be BETTER

MYM Chapter 6 ended the Opaline arc and set up the next villains. I will greatly miss Opaline tho. Like the TYT shorts are not as funny without her banter with Misty.

Huh. Good to know. It is always a shame when good villains have to go away.

Yeah, I think they just kinda... nuked it from the game. It's doubly hard to find that one since it was a 2D homescreen line, which I don't think many used to start with since we all loved the home screen cycles. I've found a few of his 3D lines captured in-game but nothing more.

Alas, it only lives in our memories + the few written records of several people claiming to hear it as well, seemingly. What's funny is that If I'm hearing JP Leonidas right in the one clip you attached, he's just saying 'little brother' to start with, so it might well have been an ENG-only error that they then corrected.

Two other things that have caught my attention while poking about, though, are:

-This battlecry from Euden???? Maybe??? It's in his Bondforged lines, seemingly in the fight vs. Xenos or something, but as I mentioned, I still am completely unsure if this is him.

It doesn't help that a line of Notte's is there right after. But I figured I'd share this one to see if anyone else had any thoughts on it, because somehow this is not computing with how Euden usually sounds, even if his VA had the range to do it.

The second thing is the retrieval of the rare English Beren's voice!

They had a few lines for him-as-Morsayati in his fight. Mordecai's VA, Dylan Sloane, picked up the role even though he's not credited on the wiki, which makes sense since, well, it's not as though it would be worth it to find someone new and he was right there already for main story events.

Here's an assorted platter, since he has 14 lines in total, over the max 10 I can put in a post.

So... yeah. Very soft-spoken, and it almost sounds like he's struggling a bit to figure things out, which is also fitting. He starts wavering at ch.23, and even in the last chapter seems a bit unsure. Heck, by the end of it, he almost seems partly swayed by Euden's argument but has just gone too far for him to actually believe in anything else.

As a random thought regarding Beren I always found it funny how he pretended he was a child to Euden, and yet was speaking so far from how they do to the point where even Elisanne is going "I thought he was oddly philosophical for a child his age". Also Notte doesn't know how right she is with this sentence:

Edit: forgot to mention that a while ago I was curious about what Mym called him in JP, so I dug through the JP text. It seems to me she actually more called him 'skinny' in JP, which is curious and funny both. Now I'm not exactly versed in alternate, more modern usage/meanings in JP, so it might well have cultural connotations of beauty, I don't know, but that was the only definition I was seeing for the character she uses!

Phares' Lost Lines!

Long story short, after much much much toil of trying to surf through computer- and audio-nerds' jargon and decidedly untrustworthy-named websites, I was finally able to crack the .acb and .awb audio files that people were able to preserve of the Dragalia voice cast! (If you've never heard of those audio files, well then, now you know where I was starting at, too... Let's just put it this way - it's an audio file that even audio players/editors like Audacity aren't equip to handle, at least ordinarily.)

And as you might suspect from the title, Phares had three voice lines that go unaccounted for in his actual unit anywhere in the game. Strangely, all three I'm guessing seem to hail from The Blood That Binds event, which makes it doubly strange since, well, we didn't get voiced events here.

Transcripts in order (and hopefully the actual voicelines, if you want to take a listen!):

"We have our belief in possibility to thank for our retaking the Halidom."

"It's been so long since we were all together, and yet fate prevents us from enjoying it."

"A summons from Leonidas? I have a bad feeling about this..."

Also not sure this one is truly lost per se but it's certainly a line not recorded in the wiki despite being 'accessible' (for however a very short window in-game) in the form of his summon quote, which is: "Let us begin our inquiry into truth!"

Hm, actually, before I post, I think I might take a guess that these are instead lines for him on the homescreen while the event was active, which might make them not 'unknown' per se but certainly inaccessible now, since I highly doubt anyone caught ordinary gameplay of all of them occurring.

Still, they're pretty darn niche and hard to get to in the game, even on the servers, so maybe someone finds it interesting regardless!

Ok I feel like if I wrote the story, Euden’s siblings wouldn’t betray him, and Euden would try and get Mym to back off from being creepy with her love of him. 

I feel like the story would've made a bit more sense if Euden’s siblings saw the benefit of working alongside him rather than against him, Emile could’ve joined at the end of chapter 4, Valyx joins at the end of chapter 6, Phares joins at the end of chapter 7, stuff like that.

A draconequus OC I made. This idea came to me while I was waiting for TPOT 6 and looking at clips of MYM chapter 4 on Derpibooru (specifically "Sunny Side Up" - what a coincidence the challenge for TPOT 6 was about food!). Her personality would probably be something like "socially awkward; likes cooking" - I had thought of a scene where she was watching the cooking show and someone came in and asked her about it.
