Shout out @nickphysio ・ The tibialis posterior. An important player in the running and gait game. If you feel you have weak arches, flat feet, and/or get lots of shin splint pain from running, the tib post can be the focus. The foot is super complex and never an easy topic to discuss. Ok now hang tight, I’m bout to geek out.. The tib post plantarflex and invert the foot. It’s a major active supporter of the medial longitudinal arch, which acts eccentrically during the shock absorption phase of gait to prevent arch collapse, early midfoot pronation, & eversion of the foot. . So this post tib is firing hard to maintain the arch during heavy loading phase of gait and creating what we call the windlass mechanism. The windlass mechanism aka movement of the medial longitudinal arch is essential for shock absorption and dissipation of forces through the foot.  The forefoot will then supinate & load at the big toe allowing for big toe extension push-off and enhancing that windlass mechanism. Plantarflexion w/ pressure through the great toe will allow for better pushoff and propulsion 🚀💨 • • EXERCISES Arch lifts Keep a tripod base distribution along the heel, ball of feet and outside feet. Try to lift your arch while keeping that tripod base. Even add a glute butt squeeze. You can see your arch lift. . Lateral step downs w/ arch lifts Keep an arch into step up. Then w/ step down slowly lower and pronate the arch (eccentric load). Repeat  step up/arch up and then step down/arch down. . Progression This exercise leads to the next phase of gait w/ pushoff through the great toe. Keep the weight down on ball of feet prior to toe extension. Place a band under ball of feet. Pull on the band while performing a single leg heel raise. Try not to let the band slip off. Progress w/ doing single limb march to RDLs. • • Bolgla, L. A., & Malone, T. R. (2004). Today, let’s target the adductors or our inner thigh muscles. . Steps: 1️⃣The side being stretched is the dragging leg (so if working the right side, your left leg is in front). . 2️⃣Bring the lead leg to the side to give your hips room to come forward, this also places your adductors in a pre-stretched position. . 3️⃣Sagittal plane: Drive hips through and toward the lead leg, bringing the arms up adds more intensity. . 4️⃣Frontal plane: Hands to the side being stretched, emphasize on driving the hip towards the lead leg. . 5️⃣Transverse plane: Tall spine, rotate toward the stretching leg. . You know the feeling, you're going throughout your day and suddenly you get that nagging feeling at the bottom of your neck or under your shoulder blade. . But "WHY ME".... I WORKOUT! 😫 . The SHORT answer: At the end of the day it come down to posture. 📝 The LONG answer: Long term biasing towards the front of our body throughout our day can lead to what are called PROTRACTED shoulder blades. Following this we either have lazy/asleep muscles in our back called rhomboids and trapezius muscles. This means we aren't getting as much "scapular retraction"... or pulling back our shoulder blades. . The majority of the movement therefore has to come from other muscles, one of which are your internal rotators of the shoulder. In this case there are our Lats buts but also rotator cuff muscle called the SUBSCAPULARIS. Postural issues can also lead to overstretching of a muscle called LEVATOR SCAPULAE . The result? We compensate through the shoulder itself to perform certain movements, such as rows in the gym. Leading to nagging overuse tension☹️ . I'll demonstrate in another post what the difference in rows would typically look like. . This concept can be applied to a number of "synergistic muscles" throughout the body. Different muscles contribute to certain movements which vary from person to person and depending on the task you're performing. But it's important that we understand those variances and what can lead to issues down the road. . I'm going to continue to post more about details of the shoulder related to this so if you have suggestions please let me know in the comments below. ✌🏼 .
