Yakuza 6: “He Means Nothing to Me”
I’ve been thinking about Yakuza 6 a lot lately. I have some issues with it, namely the fact that it feels unfinished and Majima got unfairly shafted in Kiryu’s final game. But most things there I really like. It’s an emotional, focused plot centered solely on Kiryu and his conflicted feelings about the yakuza, and has a solid set of supporting characters who almost all have great, satisfactory character arcs. Yuta, Someya, Nagumo, etc are all really cool and really good.
But an aspect that I don’t see talked about that often is the main antagonist of the game and final boss of the Kiryu Saga; Tsuneo Iwami. And it’s not hard to see why. He’s not a particularly memorable or complex character, and neither is his conspirator Sugai. The only thing that makes him stick out is how slimy and heinous his actions are, and even then it’s not enough to make me really hate him. Not genuinely.
So what is there to say about Tsuneo Iwami? Personally...I think that something about him really works. Kiryu’s sheer disdain and disregard for the man extends all the way into Kiryu’s description when he fights him.
“He means nothing to me.”
The final boss of Kiryu’s story means nothing to him. This really struck me while going through it, and it’s taken me a bit to realize why. And I’ve come to realize that Iwami and Sugai being so forgettable...is kind of the point.
Yakuza is full of charismatic men who rip their shirts off and fight for masculinity, honor, to see who’s strongest, and the like. But the Kuze’s, Ryuji Goda’s, Watase’s, and Nishiki’s of the series are often the exceptions to the rule as men who exemplify or try to exemplify the yakuza’s ideals.
Far, FAR more often...the yakuza are nothing more than garden-variety power-hungry assholes. From the thugs that Kiryu continually fights off every game, to Shibusawa in 0, to Sohei Dojima, to the schemer Takashima in 2, to Katsuragi’s weird-ass in 4, to the man who outright loathes charismatic yakuza Kurosawa in 5...Kiryu’s games are filled with unremarkable assholes granted power by the yakuza and he has to continually fight them off over and over again.
The Ryuji Goda’s and Kuze’s of the world are rare. But people like Iwami have populated the entire series, and Kiryu has taken them down every time. As the yakuza themselves have worsened, those charismatic yakuza have found less and less of a place in a criminal enterprise that at the end of the day is about power and money.
So in the end, another “big rival to Kiryu who wants to prove he’s strongest” doesn’t work. Kiryu’s final boss is a representation of every smug prick he’s had to grind into the dirt to keep him and his family safe, without the veneer of masculinity, honor, or strength to guise it. The yakuza is Kiryu’s curse, and Iwami is representative of just how pervasive that curse is in Japan’s society.
The yakuza as a whole mean nothing to Kiryu. 7 games have whittled him down to the point he wanted nothing to do with it. But even after he leaves, assholes like Iwami will keep on popping up, whether he likes it or not.

I finished Yakuza 6 yesterday, and now I have some thoughts about its OST:
(MAJOR YAKUZA 6 SPOILERS and one small Yakuza 7 spoiler)
- The epic battle themes are great, but the softer, calmer themes (Snack “Kiyomi”, Arrived in Onomichi, Clumsy Blues, etc) really stand out and are absolutely worth a second listen.
- I loved the varied fight themes for the various factions. Not only does it keep them from getting old, but it makes it easier for me to include them in my d&d campaign.
- Brother, Brother is a great opening fight theme to reel in the newcomers, and Nagumo absolutely deserved this banger.
- Whoever named the normal battle themes (Kamuro Again, Town Bully) deserves a raise. Kiryu is just done with Kamurocho by this point, as he should be.
- Akiyama 100% deserved a less generic-sounding boss theme - I would have preferred a reprise of one of his themes from 4 or 5. Through isn’t bad, though.
- I have a soft spot for a good long battle theme, and Yakuza 6 absolutely delivers in that regard. Rushin’ and Lots of Lights are some of my favorite long battle themes of the series.
- Bloodstained Philosophy is not only a great name for a boss theme, but serves as a great theme for a recurring boss like Someya. Someya deserved better.
- I am a Joon Gi-Han fanboy. Oh, and Theory of Beauty is pretty good. It would have been cool to see a different final battle theme like they had for Someya (Destiny) or even Kuze in Yakuza 0 (Oath of Enma), but I have no complaints about more Theory of Beauty. At least he’ll get a new theme in Yakuza 7, right…?
- No comment on the creepy dude in bondage in the basement of an abandoned brothel, but his theme is fittingly creepy.
- No idea why they had to bring the French into this, but Qui Garde Un Secret est très bien. Au revoir, Kazama 2 Hirose.
- I was a bit disappointed when I didn’t see Sugai at the top of the tower, but any complaints I had evaporated as soon as Destiny kicked in. Proof of Love is a good song to cry your eyes out to right after. Did I say that Someya deserved better yet? Because Someya deserved better.
- I feel like there should have been more of a buildup to the real final battle, but Body and Soul for the Koshimizu fight certainly pumped me up.
- The Way of Life isn’t the best Yakuza final boss theme, but it’s definitely up there. Also, where was Akiyama during the final fight? All of the Hirose boys were there, but no Akiyama?
- The substory themes are fun. Dirty Boy deserved to be used in more fights.
- I’m still in disbelief that they brought Sodachi and Saigo, but they certainly got good music for their returns.
- Sandlot Baseball is such a great theme for such a mediocre minigame. Yakuza baseball just isn’t the same without Shinada…
- On the contrary, Baby Sign is a perfect theme for the perfect minigame. More Haruto on my screen, please.
- Yakuza continues the pattern of using the best themes in optional minigames with the fishing and clan creator minigames for whatever reason. Never change, Yakuza. Never change.
- Today is a Diamond is the best Yakuza Karaoke song since Machine Gun Kiss.
- Like a Butterfly is pretty good and - no way, Kiryu rapping?!?!?!?!?!?
- OH MY GOD THEY BROUGHT TONIGHT BACK WHY IS NISHIKI ON MY SCREEN AGAIN I’M GONNA CRY
Like a Dragon: Ishin is next for me, wish me luck!
