A lovely weekend at Dorset’s Ancient Technology Centre for a fantastic Heritage Textiles course hosted by Castle Hill Heritage! We looked at textiles and their production methods from the Palaeolithic to the Industrial Revolution!

i really should not be allowed to watch sally pointer videos while working on projects because i always find myself either walking to my scrap bin to try something i just saw her do or planning a new project instead of finishing my current ones...

In all his glory! I used the Sally Pointer pattern with JC Rennie supersoft 4ply lambswool yarn in the shade medium grey.

This is a beautiful piece; very layer-able on top and really thermal on the bottom. I had no idea that the curls would be so thick - makes perfect sense for keeping your neck warm, but it really takes seeing it in person to get a sense for how warm & fluffy they are. I'd wear this under a 19th-c. naval hat (or, more realistically, a bike helmet) in a heartbeat.

Things I learned/tips under the cut:

-this was my first time on double pointed needles and I was convinced they were a specially-made saw trap just for me until the sixth time I tried to cast on. DPNs can smell fear especially when they're tiny (I used a size 1 needle). don't worry about how to hold it. if you knit across one needle and then dangle the whole piece in the air you'll be able to find the needle with the next stitch.

-speaking of DPNs, I used a set of 7-inch ones & they worked but it was rather touch and go sometimes as the hat got bigger. if you have access to longer needles do it.

-i found that weaving in the curl bundles is best done knitting continental style (yarn held/worked in left hand). helped me tremendously to anchor & weave the bundles with my right and keep the working yarn off to the left side.

-this yarn is tinyyy (beautiful but tiny) and the low ply means that it'll break if you're too rough with it. it generally did fine throughout the piece but I had to be careful starting/binding off/sewing ends.

-if you're using the Sally Pointer pattern, you switch from DPN to flat needles after finishing the crown; I had a pair of regular size 1 flats so I just moved the project there instead of working it flat with a DPN & worrying about it falling off. having 4 different needles with varying amounts of stitches confused me a bit to organize onto 1 - but I looked at the location of the stitch with the working yarn attached, located the next stitch beside it that I would have worked if I continued in the round, and designated that stitch as the last one on the flat needle/first one to bring off the DPNs. from there I slipped the rest of them onto the flat needle in reverse order so the stitch with the working yarn was first/on top. basically you're looking to go side to side along the length of the hat back so you can set up the foundation of the curls.

Tangle Tower hyperfixation go brrrr, have some headcanons about my favourite character (Fitz)

Born at the tower. His mum left soon after he was born and his dad, alongside other ambassadors, left when he was still a kid (can't decide on a specific age, but before he was teenaged)

Was a talkative and high energy kid, and if given the chance he would talk about plants for hours. Eventually realised that none of the adults in the tower were actually listening to him, or really cared about what he was talking about, so he withdrew in on himself

After Flint (his dad) left Fitz was given his room. Ya know how in game it says that the ambassadors took or destroyed everything before they left? Yeah that's why Fitz's room is so bare, can't bring himself to decorate it much

Did not know about Poppy's crush on him. He was just happy that someone had the same interest as him
