So I was curious when I saw the byzantine knitted belt post. I think it might actually be nalebinding and just mislabeled by the lourve because as far as I can tell knitting had probably not been invented in the time period of that object. I think the stripes would also be explained by the short yarn lengths used in nalebinding. I am definitely not an expert, but I don't want to allow what might be misinformation to spread.

Hello! Thank you so much for your question! And this is an excellent point - anything labeled as knitting by a museum should always be viewed skeptically. Nalebinding does look a lot like knitting to the untrained eye and most of academia is so uninformed on knitting history that they don't even know nalebinding exists.

So one of the main differences between knitting and nalebinding is the "live" loops that interconnect between the rows. A cut piece of knitting will have a little loop with the potential to unravel. I stared at the image of the belt for like, half an hour before I decided to post it because I wanted to be sure it really was knitting. And I spotted several little "live" loops peeking out.

I did also find this article when trying to determine the accuracy of the belt which suggests (by people who could see it in person) that it was knitted basically on a loom or peg board, rather than on knitting needles.

adhd is stupid because how do you explain to people that the reason your sleep pattern is fucked because you were hyperfocused on reading about nalebinding and weren't aware of time. Only to end that because you dropped your phone on your face thus giving yourself a nosebleed which while waiting for that to stop gave you enough time to look up the history of european rail systems and before you knew it you were breeding shinies in pokemon and you now have three hours to sleep.

First nalbinding project done: started off as practice for a baby hate, but it turned into a dice bag. Holds what is almost a full pound of dice, with room for more. Also, my needle from windhaven fiber arts came in! I'm very pleased with it. I finished the bag before using the needle, but I started a little chain with it and am impressed with how well it works.

July- finished my very first pair of socks; despite identical patterns, one sock is significantly smaller T_T

in retrospect, a four colour faire isle pattern was maybe not the wisest choice for my very first sock. BUT! I was not bored and there are cute foxes on them

New nalebinding project and actually trying for some complexity this time! I'm going for a starburst pattern and the nature of the craft is going to make it swirly. It's too early to tell whether or not the effect is going to look cool lol.
