I lied, I am making one more post about the OceanGate discourse because I am tired of the dehumanization and jokes.
I decided to look into two of the people on board that sub because I knew nothing about them and everyone keeps saying its just a bunch of rich tourists who deserved to die.
Today we are going to talk about Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet. -------
Hamish Harding: What did he do during his life? Is he just some rich asshole? -In 2017, Harding worked with Antarctic VIP tourism company, White Desert, to introduce the first regular business jet service to the Antarctic using a Gulfstream G550, landing on Wolfs Fang Runway, an ice runway. Harding also visited the South Pole several times, accompanying Buzz Aldrin in 2016 as he became the oldest person to reach the South Pole (age 86) -In 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Harding, along with Terry Virts, led a team of aviators that took the Guinness World Record for a circumnavigation of the Earth via North and South Poles in a Gulfstream G650ER in 46 hours 40 minutes. The One More Orbit mission launched and landed at the Shuttle Landing Facility (Space Florida) at NASA Kennedy Space Center, US. Harding was the mission director and led a team of over 100. -In 2021, Harding and Victor Vescovo dived to the deepest point of the Mariana Trench, the Challenger Deep at a depth of 36,000 feet (11,000 m), in a two-person submarine, setting the records for greatest length covered and greatest time spent at full ocean depth. -In 2022, Harding's aviation company Action Aviation supplied a customized Boeing 747-400 aircraft to transport eight wild cheetahs from Namibia to India to launch the reintroduction of the cheetah to India project of the Indian Government and the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia (CCF). Cheetahs have been extinct in India since independence in 1947. This conservation project was designated a "flagged expedition" by the Explorers Club with club members Harding and Laurie Marker, founder of the CCF, carrying the flag on the flight to India.
------- Paul-Henri Nargeolet: What did he do during his life? Is he just some rich asshole?
-In the 1970s, he was appointed Commander of the Groupement de Plongeurs Démineurs de Cherbourg, whose mission was to find and neutralise underground mines. -In the 1980s, he was transferred to the Underwater Intervention Group (GISMER), where he piloted intervention submarines.  During this time, he travelled the world retrieving submerged French planes and helicopters, including the individuals and weapons upon them.  Through this work, he found an Roman wreck, located at a depth of 70 metres. He also located a DHC-5 Buffalo that crashed in 1979 with 12 people on board, including several members of the Mauritanian government. -Nargeolet piloted dives to the Titanic wreck site in 1987, 1993, 1994 and 1996.  His 1987 expedition was the first to collect artifacts from the wreckage. -In August 2007 RMS Titanic, Inc., owned by Premier Exhibitions, a company that organises travelling exhibitions, commissioned Nargeolet to locate RMS Carpathia, which had rescued survivors of RMS Titanic but was torpedoed in 1918. -Nargeolet worked with RMS Titanic, Inc. to recover artifacts related to the Titanic as the Director of the Underwater Research Program. His work has included utilizing remotely operated vehicles (ROV), as well as piloting dives to the wreck site. His work has resulted in recovering nearly 6,000 artifacts over the course of 35 dives. In 2010, he was part of a mission to 3D map the wreck site and determine levels of deterioration using ROVs and autonomous underwater robots. -In 2010, he participated in the search for the flight recorder of Air France Flight 447, which crashed the previous year while en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris
------- TLDR: They may be a couple of rich dudes, but they were more than that. They were actually qualified to be in such a vehicle with actual experience diving in real submarines and had reason to be there. They were not just some tourists. They did a lot more than any of you are ever going to do, but sure, lets dehumanize them and see them as just a bunch lazy rich people who deserve to die simply because they are rich.

The transaction took place on 11 March 1909. That day, the Kassler Fishing Club handed a German colonial official only identified as Dr. v. E. (probably Dr. Max von Eschtruth) an ominous package.
He had been on vacation in Germany. Now, he was about to return to Southwest Africa, a German colony originally founded in 1884. In Antwerp, Belgium, he received an unusual delivery: thousands of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) eggs. The precious cargo had come from a well-known fish-breeding institution in Saxony, central Germany, and given its destination more than 6,000 nautical miles (ca. 11,100 kilometers) away, had been carefully packed in ice and covered with cloth. Once aboard, it was stored so as to avoid it being exposed to temperatures above 10°C. It was a long journey, three weeks at sea [...] and finally to Swakopmund. [...] After three days by train it arrived in Grootfontein, in central Namibia. According to the Windhuker Nachrichten newspaper, only around two hundred eggs had not survived the long journey. The rest were quickly unpacked and put into a nearby stream. There, many trout eggs stopped moving, and by the next day all were dead: the shock of simply releasing them into 21°C warm water had killed them [...].
---
Part of broader efforts to settle German Southwest Africa, the introduction of fish farming had begun prior to this episode [...]. A variety of experts [...] had long planned wells and dams in light of their desires to turn the arid landscapes of Southwest Africa into self-sustaining agricultural settler environments. Countless expeditions had explored and surveyed [...], or had visited neighboring South Africa to learn from the British. [...] In 1904, one observer highlighted two main challenges: “For the breeding of trout and carp, […] the establishment of better water conditions has to be completed first. Plus, it would not be easy to transport stock and seed fish” to German Southwest Africa [...].
Colonialists felt they could confront both issues with an increasing investment in and the construction of colonial infrastructures. In 1903, the completed Mole harbor in Swakopmund allowed settlers to disembark much more easily. Newcomers could also travel by train inland -- a much simpler journey compared to relying on oxen wagons. Additionally, the colonial administration offered numerous incentives to settlers, including loans.
Soon new arrivals began pouring into the colony, especially after the German defeat of the Herero and Nama people in what has been [...] called “the first genocide of the twentieth century.”
---
Early efforts to introduce German fish took shape within these contexts. In fact, in September 1904, the district commander of Windhoek, Max von Eschstruth, tried to introduce carp into an artificial pond. He intended for the pond to become part of an agricultural experiment station, which was established in Neudamm five years later and for which he had planned to acquire carp and tench from the consulate in Cape Town. There, and elsewhere in their colonial empire, British efforts had been much more advanced and successful [...]. However, Eschstruth was only able to get his hands on 50 carp from an institution in Jonkershoek (Fischerei-Zeitung, 11 August 1906). That cargo was then transported by ship to Swakopmund, later by train to Windhoek -- and for the last 35 kilometers a Herero worker had to carry it. [...]
[There were] additional attempts in 1911 [to naturalize trout]. That time “roughly 1,000 eggs were still alive” at arrival in Grootfontein (Südwestbote, 25 February 1911). The fish even hatched, and swam into the artificial pond. Yet once again the water temperature reached more than 20°C that afternoon -- which killed the trout. Utopian expectations did not match realities on the ground.
Over time, German colonial fantasies tied to the introduction of trout began to fade. In 1911, newspapers like the Südwestbote had still been defiant; three years later, the Deutsches Kolonial-Lexikon painted a different picture: “Within German colonies the artificial breeding of Cypriniformes is probably not possible at all” (636). And although references jealously pointed to British successes nearby (649), the publication concluded that the breeding of Salmonidae would only be promising in more mountainous areas.

Towering Brandberg
This photograph, taken by a crew member aboard the International Space Station, shows part of the central Namib Desert just inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Brandberg Massif, a circular mass of rock that forms Namibia’s highest mountain, is visible in the center of the image. The mountain stands 2,573 meters (8,442 feet) above sea level.
The massif is known by the name “Brandberg” in Afrikaans, Dutch, and German, and “Daures” in the local Damara language. The mountain is sacred to the San people, whose ancestors are thought to have created the famous “White Lady” rock painting.
The Namib is an ancient coastal desert where soils are thin or non-existent. The lack of deep soils makes it possible for a variety of colors and textures of different rock types to be observed from the space station. Brandberg Massif itself appears in dull red tones. Geologists classify the mountain as a granitic intrusion, similar to the well-known El Capitan massif in Yosemite National Park. All the granitic landscapes in this image were put in place as part of a continental breakup 132 million years ago, when the land masses we now know as South America and Africa began to drift apart.
Much older rocks are also visible. Geologists think the gray-toned schist northwest of Brandberg formed 750 to 650 million years ago, and the red-toned sedimentary rocks to its southwest formed 300 to 250 million years ago. The Messum Crater, the remnant of one of Earth’s largest volcanic eruptions, formed at roughly the same time as the continental breakup.
Signs of human activity are also visible. The town of Uis, centered on a tin mine, serves as a jumping-off point for tourists visiting rock paintings and archeological sites in the area, especially in the Tsisab Gorge.
Astronaut photograph ISS070-E-76460 was acquired on January 21, 2024, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 170 millimeters. It is provided by the International Space Station (ISS) Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 70 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Finding the Best Hunting Namibia Experience!
Tumblr media
Namibia, a land of vast, rugged landscapes and rich wildlife, has earned its reputation as one of the safest countries in Africa. Since gaining independence in 1990, Namibia has enjoyed over three decades of stability, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic and thrilling hunting experience. At the heart of this remarkable adventure is Burchell-Wolf Safaris, a family-owned operation offering exclusive hunting rights in a sprawling 30,000-acre wilderness concession.
Embarking on a hunting expedition in Namibia is like stepping back in time, immersing yourself in an environment where nature reigns supreme. Each client of Burchell-Wolf Safaris is guided by highly qualified professional hunters, ensuring both safety and an unparalleled experience.
The wilderness concession, nestled within Namibia's diverse landscapes, takes hunters through thorny lowlands and into the Mopane forested mountains. Here, one can encounter exceptional trophy-quality eland and kudu, prized species in African hunting circles.
For those passionate about bowhunting, Namibia offers a unique challenge. The thick bush and rugged mountain terrain of the Etosha conservancy provide the perfect backdrop for archery enthusiasts. With 10 strategically placed waterholes featuring ground blinds and tree stands, bowhunters have excellent opportunities to pursue trophies worthy of record books.
Namibia isn't just about big game hunting; it's also a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The region's thick grassy valleys and abundant waterholes attract a variety of bird species. In the mornings, flush Guinea hens and Franklin grouse provide exciting wing shooting opportunities. As the day unfolds, dozens of doves gather at the watering holes, and at sunset, the spectacle of Sand Grouse descending en masse to drink from the water is truly mesmerizing.
Burchell-Wolf Safaris takes pride in offering exclusive hunting rights for indigenous animals in the northern part of Namibia. As you traverse the rolling hills, you may encounter majestic Mountain Zebra, Burchell Zebra, and graceful oryx. Klipspringers bask on rocky outcrops in the early morning sun, while Damara dik diks make appearances at watering holes in the afternoon.
The elusive Greater Kudu gracefully maneuvers through the Mopani trees, and the magnificent eland roams far and wide. Descending into open valleys reveals giraffes grazing on lush greenery, while steenbuck, duiker, and warthogs dart through the landscape. Springbok thrive in the open grassy fields, sharing their domain with blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, and red hartebeest.
Burchell-Wolf Safaris places a strong emphasis on conservation. They carefully manage the game species on their property to maintain a stable carrying capacity of the land. This approach ensures not only the protection of game populations but also guarantees an abundance of high-quality animals to be observed and hunted.
For those interested in the "tiny ten" antelope species – klipspringer, duiker, damara dik-dik, and steenbok – the state's northern region is the place to be. These elusive creatures can be spotted roaming freely across Burchell-Wolf's expansive 50 square miles of hunting property.
As a family-owned and operated business, Burchell-Wolf Safaris prioritizes providing personal attention to each client. By default, clients are paired with their professional hunter to ensure the best possible service. Observers are also welcome to accompany the hunting parties, offering a chance to witness the safari up close and personal.
Hunting season at Burchell-Wolf Safaris spans from March 1st to October 31st, providing ample opportunities to experience Namibia's diverse terrains and game species.
Burchell-Wolf Safaris caters to a wide range of hunting preferences, offering various safari hunting methods to suit the capabilities and preferences of each client. The most common and successful method is the classic spot and stalk, with a rifle in hand. However, for those who favor the challenge of bowhunting, quietly waiting at a watering hole can be a rewarding and unforgettable experience.
Beyond the thrill of the hunt, Burchell-Wolf Safaris offers a complete destination experience. Their territory encompasses over 50 square miles within the Etosha Conservancy, featuring diverse terrains, including mountains, bushland, and open savannahs. Many animals scored in the Safari Club International record book have been hunted here.
As a successful outfitter, Burchell-Wolf Safaris is dedicated to providing superior service and hospitality. Clients have the opportunity to sleep in classic tented camps, savor traditional cuisine made from game meat harvested during the hunt, and participate in additional fun activities. The lodge's boma, with its open thatched roof, provides a perfect setting to enjoy the night sky and unwind beside a roaring fire while sipping your favorite drink from a fully stocked bar.
At Burchell-Wolf Safaris, they believe that hunting should be about seizing opportunities. Rather than offering fixed packages, they allow enthusiasts to pay a day fee and select their preferred trophies from a price list. This flexibility ensures that hunters can make the most of their time in the bush.
Moreover, Burchell-Wolf Safaris is committed to passing on the love of hunting to the next generation. To encourage this, they welcome children aged 12 and under to join the adventure with no day or observer fee.
In conclusion, Namibia Hunting Safaris with Burchell-Wolf Safaris offer an extraordinary blend of adventure, conservation, and personalized service in one of the world's most captivating wildernesses. Whether you're a seasoned hunter or a first-timer, this is an opportunity to create lasting memories while contributing to the preservation of Namibia's remarkable wildlife.

Salt Lake Colors, Kazakhstan An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) took this photograph of a chain of small lakes in the treeless grassland, or steppe, of western Kazakhstan. The colorful lakes lie a few meters below sea level. This part of Kazakhstan is a lowland that slopes toward the Caspian Sea—300 kilometers to the south—which is itself about 27 meters (90 feet) below sea level. Small settlements (such as Kumankol) dot these semi-arid landscapes, but they can be difficult to discern in satellite and space station imagery. Hundreds of such pastoralist settlements are spread out across rural Kazakhstan. A major road crosses the bottom of the photo. The Ashiozek River, marked by many meanders, brings water south to the lakes. The river spreads out into a small delta, and water flows through these branches to lakes Aralsor and Zhalnak and other depressions further south. (For scale, Lake Aralsor measures 15 kilometers, or 9.5 miles, wide in an east-west direction.) The margin of a vegetated dunefield is visible in the lower left corner; dunes often accompany such lakelets in this region. Evaporation increases the salinity of the water in this region, allowing different species of salt-loving microorganisms to thrive. The different salinity and temperature in each lake influence the dominant microbe species that flourishes. Different microorganisms display varying colors, as varying lake water depth accentuates or softens the tones. Exposed salt—and not an active microbial community—may explain the brilliant white of the smaller lake bed at the lower right. The phenomenon of colorful neighboring lakelets occurs in all semi-arid subtropical zones, as demonstrated by astronaut images of Lake Eyre in Australia and Etosha Pan in Namibia. Evaporation ponds on the margin of the Great Salt Lake (engineered pans used for salt production) show the same kind of variable color differences. In most cases, red and orange colors indicate higher salt concentrations and microbial activity than blue-hued water. Astronaut photograph ISS067-E-133135 was acquired on June 15, 2022, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 400 millimeters. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 67 crew.
